A huge part of the problem here is that "The Marvels" isn't just the sequel to a $1bn blockbuater hit that came out a few years ago, but also the sequel to a streaming miniseries fewer than 1 million people watched week-to-week. This movie should have been where we were introduced to Kamala Khan.

I disagree. She deserves her own movie where Brie Larson is a side or background character. Could've been introduced in a solo movie like that before this, instead of a tv show. She is so charismatic and lovable, and her original comic book power is so cool. Instead they changed her power into green lantern and gave her a mediocre story. And she was still lovable and charismatic and had great chemistry with every other character. But the studio failed her

@@xant8344 I never said she should just be a sidekick. Marvel failed this character by introducing her in a streaming series no one watched that existed mostly to set up a movie that's flopping in part because of it.

I think you are right. The grand vision was to create a kind of feedback where the films create buzz for the tv shows which then create buzz for the next series of films. Instead they’ve diluted the brand. Also there has been an almost 3 year run of mediocre films (I’ve liked them all apart from Love and Thunder however) which led the audience to pass up on The Marvels. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love Ms Marvel and the actor who plays her, but she cant carry a movie(yet). Her time will come. The MCU’s innovation has become formulaic. The Marvels was fine, I enjoyed it, but there is no reason to actually see it if your are not hard core into this stuff. Though part of me is sad we will only seen one MCU film in 2024, I think is it’s a very good move.

Yeah I'm just saying this shouldn't have been her introduction. The series should've been a movie and that movie should've been her introduction

I'm Currently watching The Mission on Disney+. It's The Documentary about John Chau's fateful trip to the Sentinel Islands. A situation I was first learned about via the Filmcast.

I was pleasantly supposed by The Marvels, it’s fun, brisk and actually do some new stuff, although I suspect some people might hate the places they go to. Unfortunately it seems like a lot of obnoxious people are going to get what they want, this movie will be a box office disappointment and Bri Larson will probably not return to this role.
I’m starting to think that Chadwick Boseman death is a big reason that Marvel is what it is now. I think he was supposed to be the lynchpin for the Avengers going forward, and losing him was a blow they didn’t recover from, artistically and just losing a friend a coworker.

Usually with the comics you’d have side stories that enhance the main story line and weren’t required viewing for the movies. This trend to force me to watch the tv shows to watch the movies isn’t helping. I used to watch the movies but once I had to invest 10s of hours to watch tv series I was out. Also people may not be able to afford another streaming service just to keep up with the stories on Disney plus.

I'm surprised no one on the filmCast is into Attack on Titan. The storytelling puts marvel to shame, although it clearly shows shared roots in illustrated fiction.

Why is no one talking about the gender factor? This is the first women led MCU film since Black Widow and we know from the SW Sequel trilogy bigots and misogynists are gonna cry woke. Is that one of the factors this did worse than the last few MCU films that weren't considered financial flops but people thought they dipped in quality.

4 movies in 2025 (Cap 4, F4, ThunderBolts & Blade) is going to be a real test for them and they'll only give themselves the best chance for all to succeed if they aren't also planning on producing & releasing any D+ shows for that year! Almost tripling their output by going from 3 projects a year from '17 - '19 to an unsustainable 8 projects a year from '21 - '23 has clearly had an adverse effect on quality control & diluted the brand. They're right to pull back as much as possible and only release one movie in Deadpool 3 & one live-action show in Echo next year and hopefully they stick to that plan for 2024, but 2025 with 4 movies and maybe more shows will be the real test to see if they can truly turn things around!

    • @Janootz

I am not certain all those movies are still happening. Marvel is going to scrap or retool everything that isn't too far along for them to do so (and probably even some that are).

Completely disagree. If anything I think they need to lean in even harder to having them intertwined. The shows that I haven't enjoyed have been mostly because there weren't enough heroes in them in either main roles or as cameos. I think there's more than a little misogyny to blame as to why The Marvels didn't do bank at the box office and that's sad. The movie was great. Way way way better than the last Thor or Ant Man.

Part of me wonders as the audience gets older, perhaps the flicks should mature as well not just in tone, but how the story is told. They don’t necessarily need to be really heavy, but it would make sense that those who grew up with it have moved on.
Meanwhile a 9 year old sees this as his dad’s hand-me-downs and maybe they have their own thing they click with.

Certainly seems as though a lot of the experimentation around streaming has failed. I think all the legacy studios need to lobby to allow ownership of theaters. Going to the movies is an experience, one that Netflix is actively trying to kill. If the studios bought out AMC and others, renovated the theaters and set up a subscription model I think people would go more often. Problem historically has been studio and theater were in competition for profit, if they merged the price to consumer could drop, and would increase traffic/subscriber growth. Neither the studios nor theaters on their own make enough money to compete with Netflix, UA-cam and TikTok. But again combine theater and studio, improve the experience and there could be a winning business.

I think the MCU is in its tailspin era--like the DECU has been for several years now. We know it's not working, they know it's not working, but there's stuff in the pipeline, and it just has to cycle through before everyone can move on. But that doesn't mean Deadpool, Daredevil and Spider-man can't be great. As for Monica, Kamala and Carol, these characters will fade into wherever America Chavez, Shang-chi and White Vision are hanging out.

No I’m sorry but I don’t think that’s true apart from the sad losers who obsess over Brie Larson, a lot of the films especially over the last 3 years have been “just ok” when they needed to be groundbreaking in order to keep the MCU momentum going. Barbie was a big hit, where was the misogyny then? In the marvels, despite having a lot of good things in it, they made a film that “casual” MCU fans were not interested in seeing.
