just got here almost 3 years later but anyway, great review, thank you! My opinion on this and pretty much everything regarding the final product of a guitar tone can be summarized in this old saying "it's not the bow, nor the arrow...it's the archer". The dinamics and touch of the player makes a BIG percentage of the final tone. Casually I experienced this in real life when assisted to a Malmsteen clinic (funny you are using his signature guitar in this video) and got to listen him playing with the guitar disconnected...HIS TONE WAS THERE there regardless of no amp being on!
Some great tones Leon! But I reckon it's more you than the box. You can make thin air sound so good 😀Keep up the great work mate. 30K coming up soon! Cheers.
I don’t care what anyone says: if you ran that through a mock-up setting, live in a bar, the average listener would not know the difference. For the money that you’re paying for this little unit, it’s super versatile and it’ll do anything you would need it to do. Would you actually use it live or in a recording situation? Probably not, but I think you could fake it (if you were trying to) in front of a panel of people, they probably wouldn’t know the difference. Great demo, thanks.
These old pod videos are so funny. Everyone hated them for so long and now in 2019 "it actually ain't that bad y'all!" hahahahahahahahahaha, guitar players
problem is the sound processor is 16bit, the difference between today's 24bit and those days 16bit, is like the difference between 60 hz monitor and 144hz monitor for gaming.
I bought one when they came out. Tossed it in my flight case when i worked overseas. For what it is and the price at the time, zero complaints. Very usable. I still use it today. It's fun to use and kept me playing. I've recorded with it and it does what is intended. Great review & playing as always!
I have it and I use it for small gigs, or on acoustic guitar, or even bass. Sometimes I use it for recordings with a Blue Tube preamp right after the Pod and before the interface, which lets the pod very tubey. Nice review!
I used to have a pod XT, POD X3 and an Axe FX II. The one I used most was the X3, just because easy . Axe FX was the best sound, but when it came to record X3 and pod farm did the job better for me as a bedroom player .The best gear is what suits you better !
Thanks man. Nice playing and demonstration. I had one of these maybe twenty years ago and I just purchased one for fifty bucks after watching you here. I have over a hundred pedals and it’s still cool to enjoy this on the fly. Been playing 48 years and only collected pedals after retirement. Thanks again
Great video. I was offered one of these as a gift, they said "what do you want an Axe FX III with 2 FR's or a pocket POD with headphones?" , of course I chose the POD for portability...!
Thanks for the video, man. I really enjoyed how you got that ‘Mayer ish’ tone from that little thing! It would be interesting to see you reviewing the old zoom g2 too
Those old Line 6 units still have their charm, definitely has that sound and feel of a parallel compressed signal smashed and saturated to oblivion, could imagine it complimenting an Axe FX in parallel really nicely.
I've seen and met Pete Anderson (at clinics) a few times. He still uses two Pods in his live rig. He said he started using them back when he was with Dwight Yoakam, and he collects them so that when he kills them on the road, that he'll always have a pair b/c they are such an integral part of his sound.
I've had at least 4 PODs...basically every generation, OG, XT, X3, HD I got em all to sound good live, through FX loops, tubes and cabs. I really like the HD, its got great cleans and the Recto model is easily the best of the stock high gain tones. If you push it hard and put an EQ in the loop, it gets into Mark territory. Y ou know you're happy with the tone when you can play for 5 hours without touching anything other than a guitar and Jazz III.
I have one of these PODs and I agree about the overly compressed sound. When I used it with headphones for practicing I had ear fatigue pretty quickly although it has some interesting and enjoyable tones. I even had tones downloaded, there's a ton of sounds (essentially settings) based on EVH, Gary Moore, Metallica or whatever sound you want, you download it and insert it in the pocket pod and play! You can even disengage the speaker simulator (the AIR switch on the back) and play through a normal guitar amp. But the over-the-top compression makes things annoying after a while. Good demo, nevertheless!
Great video! Great tones! I love when someone knows and understand how to use different gear, even the oldest and cheapest stuff! My main rig is the pod 2.0...lol ,everywhere I play sound techs come over to see what I have....lol,....keep the great work!
I've had one of these for about 8 years and still love it. I've actually used it far more than my amp, for practicing at home. If it weren't for the Helix I'd still be using it regularly.
Awesomeness, I still have the old red face "tubetone" line6 300 watt head and still use it often on the British hi-gain setting sounds great still today

Your editing skills with newer tech make that old bean sound acceptable. Back in the day, I did not have such luck. I had the Pod Pro for a short time. Was supposed to be my be all-end all live rig solution. I researched it, listened to samples, ordered it, waited for it.. Then was disappointed by it. At the time, Napster, Line 6, Myspace, and eBay was all new and cool. So I threw it on eBay and got most of my money back.
I have one of those and never realized you could USB it to your computer. I just used it for practicing with headphones. I always thought it sounded fine for what it was, but it was kind of difficult to make adjustments. I'm going to pull it out and make some practice models this weekend.
My first rehearsing rig was a POD 2.0 red bean through my fathers Vinyl player tube power amp and its speakers. I played that thing to death through many Cassette/CD players and guitar amp returns. Still have it and it still works just fine! This pocket version gives me some nostalgia. POD 2.0, X3, HD than Helix. I really wonder where the tech will go 20 years from now.

I still have my old Pod 2.3. I still like the Soldano model it has. I liked the first 4x12 but I cant remember what cab that was modeled off of. The pod sounds even better when you turn the cabs off and run it through a real tube amp.
Enjoying your vids Leon;-) I didn't expect the pocket pod to sound as good as it did here. I've had all the bean pods since they first came out except for this one. I think the cab model you chose really helped though!
I have one of the original Pods. I actually used it to record a pop punk song. Its got this JCM800 style setting that is just so punk sounding. I might actually pick on of these up as a super tiny headphone amp for couch playing while the wife watches TV. Have to see if it uses batteries.
The original bean was groundbreaking when it came out, and it still holds its own these days. Personally I still love some of the models like the JCM and the Black Panel. Great job Leon!

Honestly though all the tones you played sounded plenty good. About the only time it lost it for me was during the deep purple riff where it felt like it got a little quacky in the thick of it. Even then it was almost good, just a little off.
such a nostalgic sound. reminds me of guitar center here. they always had these with earphones to test out guitars. they sounded like hot garbage...i have to admit tho, i had no idea what i was doing back then

You should try Zoom 505II. I had one when I was a child and I had a lot of fun with it. That thing actually sounds very horrible but it was the first thing which gave me distorted sounds.
"Now I know what you're all thinking, can we upscale the amp models into a standard AR impant chip? Turns out we can, and they look, smell and sound great!"
I'm pretty sure you could plug a tennis racket into a refridgerator and make it sound good Leon!! lol Good job! Almost makes me want to take out the old 'bean'........almost....!
Yes, Old PODs always sounded reasonable it was how they felt that was the issue after even a short session. An inherent compressor you could never turn off with rounded out highs.
It’s almost like they were trying to capture the response & feel of actual tube amplifiers, & this was their quick fix to get that, as best they could. I kind of like the feel at first, but like you said, there’s no way of turning that off, unless you switch to another amp. Feels weird then, making that amp jump, afterwards. 😂 Gotta re-acclimate myself for a minute.
Great video....enjoyed this. This is why I laugh when people say "Helix is best!" "Fractal is best!" "Kemper is best!". My gigging buddy in Chile gets stellar tones from an old Line 6 POD XT Live and his audience certainly wouldn't know or care that it's a much older piece of technology. Just play what you got and rock it!
What blows my mind about those old POD's is that animals as leaders debut album was recorded on one. One of my fav albums ever.
Say anything’s debut album was also recorded on one!

You should try Zoom 505II. I had one when I was a child and I had a lot of fun with it. That thing actually sounds very horrible but it was the first thing which gave me distorted sounds.
I did a vid with the 707, that was my first rig!
@@LeonTodd Thank you. I will check it then.
Fully scooped insane mode isn't exactly a good sound, but it definitely feels like a FUN sound to sit there and have a blast making noise with.
Connects me to my youth!
If it sounds good, then it is good. Blues Driver and 3rd party IR's should be the right fix.
It's kind of trippy that some day we'll make videos like this about the Axe-Fx 3.
The pat cash challenge?
Yes, Old PODs always sounded reasonable it was how they felt that was the issue after even a short session.
An inherent compressor you could never turn off with rounded out highs.
Totally agree. Felt kinda weird.
Gotta re-acclimate myself for a minute.
You're a pretty damn good guitarist son!!! Let me crash this subscribe button.
This guy can make a banjo sound good.
