Broke my arm in the late 90s...required a hospital visit, pain meds and a cast. Broke my arm in 2020...poured some IR on it and was doing push-ups later that day.
The IR’s and power amp emulation made a huge difference....actually made those POD sims sound pretty good...never would’ve thought it would make that big of an impact on the sound...great video..
I love these videos with old gear that people just kinda disregard. After watching this video, I found some old clips of me playing on my computer. I busted out my POD 2.0 that I got new years and years ago and recreated the exact same riffs. Is it the greatest tone I've ever gotten? Not even close, but I think it's possible to get something usable out of it. That said, I'll stick to my real Marshalls for anything serious, but I could see the POD getting used for overdubs and late night playing, I like the fact that you can grab onto knobs and tweak, unlike a plugin. I'm old school like that I guess....or I'm just getting old. Thanks for doing videos like this reminding people that old gear that has fallen out of favor can still be useful.
Curently been using my pod 2.0 with mooer radar into a flat response speaker with great results. It honestly sounds fantastic. Using the pods pre and power amps and the ir cabs and mics.
Leon again with the reversed toggle switch install. I like it. Its the Van Halen way, too. Really liked the sounds with the extra IRs, especially the modern chug tone was far superior.
just tried my old 2.0 POD with a Mooer Radar. What an improvement! So far I prefer to use it without the power amp sims in the Radar, but I will dive a little deeper in the next days. In fact, I like my "new POD" so much, that I bought the rack version (POD pro) for my recording rack as an option. Tons of famous albums in the early 2000s have 2.0 PODs/AmpFarm on it.(even Dann Huff used them). PODs are already legendary!
The IRs really make a huge difference, and I my opinion the best tone was with the recto + IR + PA sim, i guess it's a good investment if you want to upgrade your old multi-effects and don't have money to a new, by the way, Ignite Amps has a free power amp sim and it works really well!
Yes using IR’s definately saves it. Only invest in a Mooer Radar if you have POD already gathering dust in your closet. Otherwise go straight for Mooer GE150 or up that have IR and poweramp sim built in.
I found mine last year in a box took it and extra batteries to a friends house hooked it up to his old magnavox stereo and jammed away the night.now its back in the box.
You read my mind... I was thinking: "Man!, hooking this up with a Radar and you would have a ultra portable decent sound unit"... And there you said it at the end of the video...😅👍
It's a big improvement, but they still sound pretty crude and one dimensional to me compared to modern amp modelling. It is amazing how much better IRs are than speaker sims. I recently started using a good IR with the original Bias Amps for my recording and practise rig. It was night and day. Suddenly they sounded really damn close to a real amp.
Bias FX is one of the worst modelers out there, dude! You'll be blown away with thermionik, reaxis or helix, not to menrion the overpriced neural stuff.

@@MatthiasBuesing fortin NTS is not so much better than thermionik, that used to cost 49 bucks with a ton of different models. That, my friend, was a bargain. I always find myself loading OH IRs when using any modeler, so the built in IR is kinda useless to me. I do still think neural stuff to be a bit pricey. Very good, but pricey.
I've done this about 2 years ago, when i got into the whole IR world. It's nght and day. Amp sims have come a long way since then, but ther REAL revolution lies on the speaker/cabinet segment of the chain.
The IRs make a huge improvement in making the amps more realistic sounding. Not perfect, but way better. If you could load the IRs into the POD it would be perfect for performing live with just a short cable from your guitar to the pocket POD on your belt and a long one from the POD to the P.A. (or a wireless!) and confuse everybody about how you get the sound without an amp or any pedals at all, ha, ha! You could dial a sound like a Plexi that would clean up when you roll down your guitar volume and grind when full up, or a clean with chorus for a ballad, and be virtually free from pedalboards or amps, like just having a guitar and playing it!
@@victorbicudo1374 My point was that you can go onstage, grab a cable and rock out. No need to "sneak in" backstage to hide a pedal or an amp, everything you need would be on you! No setup, no wasted time, just go and play!
I had and used POD HD500X for some time, and it sounded alot better with ir's from Two Notes Wall Of Sound plugin, also i could use it in stereo for delays etc.. because in W.O.S. You can use multiple cabs in stereo spectrum. Definitely the best option for an old modeler user, because W.O.S. has free version with two cabs, and if You buy any cab (even only one) it becomes a full version.

There is no way to make an IR without powering a cab. Pretty sure most people use a tube amp to make IRs. So why people put poweramp simulation on top of that is something i don't understand

The XT generation had better amp tones, especially the additional model packs for the XT live had some really good sounds. That's a better base to add modern IR's, and some of the additional effects still sound good in 2020, too.
it's funny, when it comes to modellers everyone is in agreement that the IRs make the biggest difference and with the right IR you can make pretty much anything sound useable, but when it comes to real amps people stick to the cheapest possible cab that has the right impedance rating, start buying 20 amps and 50 pedals and wonder why they still havent found their tone...

The ability to load external IRs sets the pod ahead of where it was for sure! Thanks for reviewing.
Pocket pod is unable to load external IRs. The video was made by turning the cab sim OFF in the pod and loading the IR with an external loader.
