Oh......my......crap!!!!!! I cannot process this at all!!! Victor's solo was Heaven...Steve's solo was Heaven....but I love at the end when you can literally see Heaven from 7:32 until the end is just.....I have no words for it. You can just picture as the song comes to an end that you are at peace. I just love how Victor starts it off and then Steve follows him with like a call and response thing going on. It brought a tear to my eye because it was just so peaceful man. One Love and God bless!
When I listen to it, I feel.... a history of a boy who become a man... It`s really come forward to my mind... Great interpretation!! cheers. .....thanks
This is from "Bass Extremes: Live", a CD/tablature book combo and DVD from 1994. Victor and Steve do commentary and show their techniques after the songs. (If you search hard, you can find snippets of this vid on your favorite filesharing program...) According to the commentary, Bailey is using harmonics, sounding them with the index finger on his right hand. He prefers this to Jaco's technique to use his thumb to sound the harmonic. the note bends are just slides.
Really amazing song, got stuck in my head and made for one of the most enjoyable night shifts I've ever worked lol! Everyone in this performance (including the drummer) are really talented musicians :)
@x1te Yeah. It sounds like that Machine Gun song off the "Band of Gypsies" album. Love that album, and this video. Pretty amazing. I honestly had the thought "Steve Bailey is screwed! How can he follow that solo 4:00?! There's nothing he can possibly do to match or do better then Vic W's solo." (Vic W is what those of us who are hhis close friends call him.) Wow.... so, that's how he can follow Victor's solo. Simply amazing.
the accuracy of those artificial harmonics amazes me every time. yes i can hit them but not at that speed with that degree of accuracy extreme respect of steve over here ^^
Bailey actually played bass on GnR Appetite for destruction.I know a guy who was there and he said Bailey was kinda pissed that he had to play with a pick on fretted 4 or something. He is so pro that it saved time and $ having him play instead of the dude in the band who wrote the songs! These 2 are scary!
steve's the man - south carolina boys can play bass - the tune he quotes is a buddy miles song called - them changes - recorded while he was playing with - jimi hendrix - jaco also does a great version on live in ny vol 4
I'm sorry, but Victor is on another level. Outstanding
I think bailey's harmonics are unmatched. Those 2 make a great team, they play on a whole different level.
In my opinion, Victor Wooten is the greatest of all time...
4:30 - 6:40

Never heard of Steve Bailey before... loved his bass line here

so much I've learned, so much to learn. One of the most beautiful rules of life, you're never the best at anything.
When I listen to it, I feel.... a history of a boy who become a man... It`s really come forward to my mind... Great interpretation!! cheers. .....thanks
The sound of Bailey's bass is like a chorus effect :x
I saw this video at my bass player's house about 4 years ago and just found it on youtube again.... so beautiful!

there is a book about victor and steve.
it's called bass extremes, there are the chords and basslines (obviously) ;-)
Similar to Stanley Clarke... Well the two of them play Song called "Stan the man". I hope I made a point.
SOMEONE NEED to download victor wooten and steve baileys version of portrait of tracy

@Skidhblanir Yes. It says in the book that it was written as a tribute to Stanley Clarke who they both admire.
