I once saw Steve performing with Victor Wooten. After the show, I bought some CDs and wanted to ask Steve to sign his for a friend of mine who is a fretless bass monster in his own right. Steve had left and was headed to the bus or something. I was bummed, but someone in the crew called him and he came back just to see me (and sign the CD). I was flattered!!!
He is a magican on the bass! I love his fretles tunes, like this. There is so much going on in 5 min!!! That is a virtuoso, 100%! This slides are heavenly played.
:05 - It wdv been the honor of my life to shake the hand of Steve Bailey. The hands that play this instrument so gracefully. He is absolutely amazing. 6 strings and fretless. How in the hell does he know where he's going without frets. I always thought it was a helluva gift to play a fretless
2:20 and 3:00 OMFG. It's like his ancestors have been playing fretless bass for millions of years and the locations of notes on the neck are hardwired into his DNA. 😶
I remember downloading videos of him and Victor playing together before the youtube days. Today we can stream 4k-recordings for hours and get recommendations. In those days we read something in specialized magazines and had to look for some filesharing opportunities and wait half a day to watch a 10min clip.
Sorry I’m a few years late, but basically if you hold down a note with one finger, it becomes a new fundamental to apply harmonics to with another finger. He is doing this with multiple notes at a time to produce full chords of harmonics that aren’t necessarily limited to the fundamentals of the open strings.
Guitar players will often do this by quickly picking and then touching the string with the thumb of their right hand, however this is a lot less precise if you’re trying to get a specific note, and a lot harder on the bass if you don’t have a pick.
He did this for the Berklee concert too we were all laughing hard, and he took the mic said “hey kids, you can’t find another one who can play this on a 6 string fretless”
He may be a great guy and so on, but he should stick to a 4-string fretless. His intonation sucks and all off these glissandos? Marcus Miller is not a upright player, but he played double bass on "Night Music", and it is fortgetable, because it did not sound well with Slim Gailard. The electric fretless is a different thing, and he is very careful using it. This is just unbearable.

I've been playing 40 years and I'll never play like this in another 40 years. He's on his own level.

How time flies!
Blown away by his style. How the hell is he doing all those harmonics.
Search for his instructional video here kn UA-cam. He breaks it down nicely.
Artificial Harmonic full chords! nuts man.

I couldn't play like that even in my dreams...
Incrível como a sonoridade dele é característica. Muito bom!
Обожаю его. А уж его дуэт с Вутеном это вообще космос.
Some Damn fine playin'!
Um dos melhores do mundo, mestre dos harmônicos artificiais!
Oui j’adore le harmonicos artificiais
So boss with it
Bailey is fucking sick
Im gonna go ahead an burn my bass now
Well that's clasical guit6ar technic he is using .. Tremolo thechinc , actualy he is playing clasic guitar on bass.
Dang I thought he was sitting in a chair at first. Didnt realize he was that short. But boy does he have skills
In spite of all that technique, he never forgot to keep it melodious!
He's such a youngin' here! Already godlike though...
Grand musicien
Unbelievable
Actually unreal, those artificial harmonics are so clean.
Some people are just made for that kind of playing
4:59 an interesting touch on "stairway to heaven"

😳😳😳😮😯😲😵💫😵💫😵😵
That's all I have to say
he is playing music .. totally
WHY ISN'T HE FAMOUS?
some of his playing is great!
(can't say that about most musicians, who are 99% Clones & Drones)
U saw TM Stevens?
Umm, what?
He kind of already is
He is fairly "famous" at least in the context of renowned elite bass players goes, but not huge or anything no just how it is for most.
Fantastic but it makes me feel drunk at times
King of false harmonics
He shouldve played guitar instead.
😂😂😂 whooooosh
Some people just prefer the sound of a bass.
Not really....the bass approach is much more interesting....and being a fretless there is really no limitations.....

Honestly cannot tell if you’re joking. If you aren’t then I have no clue what you’re talking about, intonation sounds excellent here.
