I got this on VHS back in 2001, I was 16 and it changed my playing forever. Almost any technique you can do on a bass these two legends incorporate across a bunch of different styles here. Steve helped inspire me to buy a 6 string (along with John Myung) and attempting his parts was like learning Chinese on bass with his harp harmonics and chordal phrasing. Then there was Vic and his thumb.... "Victor's Jam" blew me into a thousand funky pieces, I'm pretty sure he plays half the notes with his mustache. He already was my number one and this just added to it. Their banter in between is incredible, it made learning this madness fun. 36:46 The part where Steve talks about that chromatic run Stanley Clarke did and how he practiced it, then Victor says "Stanley was teaching you, this is cosmic". That fucking changed me. I now understood how you can learn from the universe in pretty much every moment if you are open to it. Even though I never took a "lesson" in my life every moment I sat and jammed along with all my heroes they were teaching me. Combine an open inquisitive mind with work ethic and anything can be learned.
I would have to disagree with all the comments saying here is tension between these two. They are good friends and are being sarcastic and messing with each other. That's what good friends do.
It is this ridiculous generational, and cultural flaw. There are so many people, as made evident by the joining of minds on the internet, that just do not understand the diversity of musical spirituality. These people look for subtle nuances in every relationship.
I’m quite convinced that it is impossible to replicate this concert...these 2 are the most particular, personal and unique Bass Players in the world...they are complementary, opposites but have found a common point and look like twins from different mothers. I believe that the word “Music” means this: to find each other... And with Gregg Bissonette on the drum kit is better
After watching this everyday for about a month I figured this definitely needs one of these. 3:09 - "A Chick From Corea" 13:45 - "Bangkok Blues" 22:57 - "Stan The Man" 38:23 - "Victor's Jam" 45:23 - "Thumb Start My Harley" 57:55 - "Emerald Forest" 1:12:06 - "Moonridge/Potpourri" 1:22:17 - "Donna Lee" 1:35:58 - "B.I.T. Gotta love their humor. These two weirdos...what a privilege to have been able to see them live in like 2010s or something. What a moment when Steve Bailey appeared on the stage unannounced. My soul just imploded.
As an old bassplayer myself (haven't played for years and years) I watched this whole thing with awe and amazement. I also came to realize that even at the height of my 'career' I couldn't hold a candle to these two light towers in prowess, skill and passion. Thanks to the uploader, for a quick reminder why I didn't quit my dayjob :). Even though remeniscing can be a bittersweet experience, I enjoyed this video tremendously.
@Paulonbass75 Exactly my thoughts. Simply high on very amazing musicality and chops. And a sense of humour of two guys with a lot of respect for each other.
yea musicians talk like this all the time, most of the pauses are quick self awareness checks, both these guys are super humble in real life and chill.
Steve is the head of the bass department at Berkley. He may appear arrogant here, but he is actually a really chill and funny guy. He should be able to show off, because he practices all the time to get this good. They are both amazing musicians who work hard to be where they are(:

I have this CD and it's fantastic to listen to as you can hear these guys talkin' to each other via their instruments. Thanks Steve & Victor - I'll keep buyin' your music & publishings.
Both these guys are just amazing, with their very own unique style of playing. The amazing thing with mature musicians is that's it's not a contest, it's about the music. In our maturity we are not afraid to share our gifts, we get excited to give the tricks away and watch as someone else builds upon it then gives it back to you. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC!!
these two are the best. if God give man such ability, and even more that i may not see yet, i couldn't imagine the angels in heaven playing. MUSIC IS ( i cant explain) i love music. No worries man. Just letting you know Bissonette is a fantastic drummer. I am happy you gave him props, it is very difficult to keep with those two on bass.
+Jedi Master Smoochie Gregg is playing drums for Ringo Starr! I had the pleasure of jamming with Gregg and Vic at one of the bass camps. Briefly though. Oh, had breakfast with him too!

It's called a BASS GUITAR. The purpose is these cats showing you how real bass soloing is done and what level that most people can only dream of being on. People who think that they are "ALL THAT" come to see things like this so that they realize that they are mere jam between these guys' toes. It humbles them.
That was soooooooooooooooo amazing! I'm gonna use the techniques from BOTH bassist! I've never really heard Steve Bailey before this, his techniques are amazing, and Victor sounded great as usual!
i actually don't play bass, just a little drum (after i tried all instruments but gave it up quite soon), and i saw this while cooking, but even then it's so inspiring what they do! It's just ..... COSMIC ;-) so cool!

What a great way to spend almost 2 hours, and i loved every second of it.
