Steve and Vic are two totally different players. They each have their own style and technique, and that in itself, should be appreciated. The coolest part is how the both of them play off of each other and complement what the other is doing. They're both quite brilliant in their own ways. Victor doesn't play 6-string fretless harmonic stuff, and Steve doesn't play all the slap and hammer-on stuff. Just appreciate the fact that they are both incredible at what they do.
Yeah, it really was. But back then, i felt i was the only one among my peers who saw it that way. Also, dont forget about Oteil Burbridge at this time.
Own this DVD, it is absolutely incredible. Victor came to Sacramento a few months back and we had the chance to see him in a really small venue. Only a hundred folks or so. If either of these guys perform anywhere close to you, it is worth it to see this happen live. You won't believe what you hear.
i'm dying with the musicianship on display in this video. steve's harmonics are AWESOME! i love the fact that vic's fingerstyle chops are on display here! so much stuff to practice.
Ok enough said about victor. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HIM! so dont take me for a mistake. But take a second - and look at steve bailey. The way he comps victor is fcking awesome. the controll he has over that fretless board, is awesome. And his mastering in harmonics. Its PURELY some pleasure for my bass loving ears =)
Since you're only 22 you don't understand. I was playing bass in the early 70's. When Jaco came around all us bass players started to think differently about how the bass should be played and it's roll in the band. Sure there were others expanding the roll of the instrument but Jaco took it to a whole new level. You my friend are the one who needs to expand their brain.
Sometimes it is hard for me to understand how two bassists that are so different can get together and perform pieces like this one. The power of music, I guess
A Chick From Corea... That's a real catchy title. I love how Steve Bailey look like his fingers aren't bound to the fretboard and how Victor rode above all else.
Well, I don't know about Jamerson, but I'm pretty sure Jaco would love this: he was arguably the most inventive bass player on the planet until his untimely death, and to see these two guys playing all the parts of a song (just as Jaco advised all musicians to be able to) would be awesome for him.
Thank you. You are correct and your statement is very well put. The Classical musician expresses him self in more subtle and restricted ways but there is room for a personal touch.
"he just got famous cuss he was the first." Brilliant deduction. Being first and original is what it is all about. That's what separates the greats from the followers. Anybody can copy someone else. There you made my point!!!!
u guys are cool man, i really love it, vic's bass sounds great n steve's... wow, nice harmonic n just dont get it how do u actually memorise it. u guys really feels d groove of wht u are doing, man. salutes u brother....
Actually, today I got to visit the music store in town. There are little dots every 3 spaces. It's pretty handy. It gives it a great tone, especially after using a vibrato.
It's amazing, the bass is. Just when you think you're getting good, you see a video like this and realize you're not even close. Living in Nashville does that too. Where else can you walk into a music shop and play with a bassist that toured with Clapton?
Fucnking great music! I love the timbre of fretless bass from Steve. By the away, download the álbum from him: So Low....solo. Hails to two big bassist! André E.
Gmanjam I was thinking the SAME thing when I heard it...oh well this is really cool...I loike the vibe and there's nothing like well disciplined DEXTERITY! SIGH I love it! (Reminds me of Bella Fleck and the FLecktones from back in the day!) Smiles!
They could explain that even slower, but I would never be able to play it, these guys are great they love what they do, that's all you need to play music. Victor sos grande, Steve sos grande.
It's fretless. True masters of their instrument do not need frets. What he is doing takes decades of dedication. I respect, admire, and envy such skill.
How about Andre Previn? He was a renowned classical pianist who was also excellent at Jazz. Many Jazz musicians started out trained in classical but then switched to concentrate on Jazz. The technical skills necessary for Classical translate very well to Jazz. Even Jaco Pastorious taught himself to play Bach pieces on Bass to hone his skills (Chromatic Fantasy being the most well known example).
@kkellybass fyi they take turns laying the bottom foundation, wooten just plays low parts when steve solos, and steve does it by playing bass notes then higher chords.
JEAG Yes, I'm a bass player. I've just completed my 15 song CD that took me quite a while. Now that it's done, I find that my skills and music theory have really taken a hit, so I am diving right into it and getting all my reading and theory up. I also have a Jaco Pastorious book with all his greatest works in it that I want to finish as well. Currently I have a sapphire black Bong bass in layaway, and I've built my own custom bass.
when i first viewed this, i was expecting to hear a take off on Chick Corea's "Spain" (which was inspired by Miles' "Sketches of Spain" album). but, this was completely different... and quite enjoyable. and, i must check out some other stuff by this cat, Steve Bailey... he's a bad cat too!
Along the top of the fingerboard are dots that indicate positions. When he is playing his bass, if he looks down, he'll see dots. That's how. Lots of practice, as well.
@TheMilfman7 the end is hilarious!!! i cracked up so hard. "i'm from south carolina, that stuff comes naturally. you're from virginia..." "virginia, oh man... i love chicken" LOL
@djdiscomikki A bass guitar is ANY guitar with bass strings. If a guitar gets into the lowest register, it is a bass. That's why eleven string basses (the the same range as a grand piano) are still basses.
Steve and Vic are two totally different players. They each have their own style and technique, and that in itself, should be appreciated.

Bass Extremes was a big milestone in bass history.
Yeah, it really was. But back then, i felt i was the only one among my peers who saw it that way. Also, dont forget about Oteil Burbridge at this time.

You won't believe what you hear.
This video, no matter what mood I'm in, will always put me in a fantastic mood.
those guys have so much fun playing together, you hear that in every note they play.
yes I really like it, for me finger style its like showing off what you really got, who you really are, nothing to hide
those harmonics Steve do when Victor plays solo, are just incredible!
Hello Jeanette
I had forgotten for years how these two are, mostly their chemistry playing together. It´s amazing.
Those harmonics that Bailey does are just awesome. They sound so sweet!
i'm dying with the musicianship on display in this video. steve's harmonics are AWESOME! i love the fact that vic's fingerstyle chops are on display here!
so much stuff to practice.
i cant belive, somone in the world can be dissapointed with this performance...
this is sacred!!!
These guys are the definition of pros!!! These guys make a bass guitar talk!
These videos with Vic and Steve are freakin' hilarious!
Ok enough said about victor. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HIM! so dont take me for a mistake.
But take a second - and look at steve bailey.

Unbelievable. fret-less feels so good!
Steve and Vic are great friends. They're just messing with each other.
the most perfect harmony!!!
"Chicken pickin'.....Chick in Corea, it was meant to be"
"It's cosmic...."
Can I join you guys on the moon?
These guys are f***ing good!
Steve has fantastic intonation on the fretless bass!
Absolutely amazing. A friend of mine used to have this performance on an audio CD but I've never come across the video before. AWESOME!!!
Sometimes it is hard for me to understand how two bassists that are so different can get together and perform pieces like this one. The power of music, I guess

I will also say that it is amazing how Victor manages to make a 4 string bass sound like a guitar almost :P
the bass is the coolest instrument on the planet!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best Wooten vids I've ever seen.
Excellent! They are so good that I lost my motivation to play again my bass...;-(
BEAUTIFUL THE SOUND OF BAILEY'S BASS. the harmonics sounds very clean and tasty.
most incredible thing I've ever heard.
this is the best duo of steve and victor for me so far
"This song was meant to be"
"Be what?"
Holy shit I'm on the floor laughing
Thank you. You are correct and your statement is very well put. The Classical musician expresses him self in more subtle and restricted ways but there is room for a personal touch.
holy shit doing that on fretless is amazing
this song is aboslutely crazy!!!
love this one!!
friggin awesome - love this track
porqe sois tan buenos?!! porqe os dirijisteis a vuestro camino......HErmosa canción....vibrandoo amor y energía de buen rollo....Viva la Paz!!!!
"he just got famous cuss he was the first."
Brilliant deduction. Being first and original is what it is all about. That's what separates the greats from the followers. Anybody can copy someone else. There you made my point!!!!
I love these guys. I was suposed to watch wooten in stockholm this evening but i couldn't. :(
Love the harmonics!
It was indeed used as the theme music for Benny Hill, but the piece of music is called Yakkety Sax
wish i had this kind of talent:) but thats what hard work and dedication is for. This rocks!!!!!!
I've seen Victor live a few weeks back... He was giving a workshop... The guy plays bass like a god and has a very 'Zen' mindset and voice
this is the best bass composition i have listened to in AGES, and i'm a PROPER BASSIST
I'm almost embarrassed to say that I've never heard of him. Being a trumpet player, Wynton was the first example that came to mind for me :)
3:10-3:13... DAFUQ, playing that in a fretless without getting out of tone, it's just insane, I bow to these bass gods
I love this video! Also like the humor between Steve and Vic!
the way steve jumps around the neck around 3:10 just gives it that much more character :P
u guys are cool man,
i really love it, vic's bass sounds great n steve's... wow, nice harmonic n just dont get it how do u actually memorise it.
u guys really feels d groove of wht u are doing, man. salutes u brother....
Actually, today I got to visit the music store in town. There are little dots every 3 spaces. It's pretty handy. It gives it a great tone, especially after using a vibrato.
This is just pure bliss to my ears.
Love That Benny Hill!!
Amazing talent. I hope I can play as fluidly as these maestros one day
It's amazing, the bass is. Just when you think you're getting good, you see a video like this and realize you're not even close. Living in Nashville does that too. Where else can you walk into a music shop and play with a bassist that toured with Clapton?
Great video, fantastic bass playing!!
vic lives a very clean life, so i would doubt it nj.
They are really Amazing, I like Steve Bailey when he does the Rhythm, can't say i like solo that much but.. They are both great =)
I love how Steve comments "Bass-icly" just late enough for the viewer to have had a short snicker at the pun already.
Steve Bailey is touring with Vic, J. D., and others in the US, this summer. Steve and Vic busted this tune out. Great show! Go check it out!
Fucnking great music! I love the timbre of fretless bass from Steve. By the away, download the álbum from him: So Low....solo.
Hails to two big bassist!
André E.
that's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.

(Reminds me of Bella Fleck and the FLecktones from back in the day!) Smiles!
2 virtuosos of the electric bass!
They could explain that even slower, but I would never be able to play it, these guys are great they love what they do, that's all you need to play music.
Victor sos grande, Steve sos grande.
Crazy Nice Play!!
I Love Steve. and I Love Victor too.
It's fretless. True masters of their instrument do not need frets. What he is doing takes decades of dedication. I respect, admire, and envy such skill.
I dont know whos the man with the long blond hairs, but Victor Wooten is absolutly amazing on the bass guitar.
Love it.
Greetings Hein
This is ridiculously awesome!

man. I'd love to take myself, my bass, and spend a day jamming with those two.
Believe me! I play Bass from 1976, this duet is notingh less than phenomenal!!!!
NO! It's anbelievable! Who can not like THIS?! oO
0:46 - 0:58.. and when it repeats.. best part of the whole piece.. wow!
Y´re right... I´m a bass player but when i see these guys playing i just suck... but it motivates me to keep practicing.
@kkellybass fyi they take turns laying the bottom foundation, wooten just plays low parts when steve solos, and steve does it by playing bass notes then higher chords.

My favorite part? 8:45 - Amazing in it's own way.
Crazy great video....

Amazing selection! Thanks!

Lots of practice, as well.
victor plays the perfect slap lines to go with steves solo bits!
WHAT??! the guy's shredding wickedly sick... he's plaing sixtinth notes using even his left hand thumb to hold the strings...
hahaha, I love the sarcasm
@TheMilfman7 the end is hilarious!!! i cracked up so hard. "i'm from south carolina, that stuff comes naturally. you're from virginia..." "virginia, oh man... i love chicken" LOL
they are so different from each other/that what make them so sensational
the harmonics are amazingly good, his perfected it
@djdiscomikki A bass guitar is ANY guitar with bass strings. If a guitar gets into the lowest register, it is a bass. That's why eleven string basses (the the same range as a grand piano) are still basses.
oh my god!oh mi dios que pedasos de bajistas!!!..que lo tiro!..espectaculares te felicito
yep, hes playing arpeggios on a bass, a fretless at that
Steve Bailey's artificial harmonics are mind-blowing.
1:38 vic is in the 'zone' man, love it
"oh meeen, I love chicken"
LMAO.
Gods playing. Insane.
That is awsome ! Seems nice to play :P
Steven Bailey plays the guitar role.. Wooten keeps the groove rollin'..
These guys are amazing. Just putting that out there. And I'd like to second what spyguys said.
