    thanks a lot for your tutorials. I'd like to give my 2 cents to this topic.
    There are other options to mix in _compatible_ Keys:
    If you are in 8A you can go to: 8A, 9A, 7A, 8B, 3A, 1A, 10A, 6A, 11B.
    Let me explain:
    as you mentioned someone can choose the next track from the same/neighboring keys (7A, 8A, 9A, 8B). Also if you subtract -7 (small energy decrease) or add +7 (small energy boost) to the current sector you'll arrive at 1A or 3A. If you subtract -2 (high energy decrease) or +2 (high energy boost), you'll be at 6A or 10A.
    There aren't many major key tracks so it's easy to stuck in one of them. For example if you are in 8B you have 2 options: 8A or 5A. I think 8A is trivial so let's see 5A: one can go from major to minor by subtracting 3 and changing the letter (which is pretty much from C major to C minor). Also from minor to major by adding 3 and changing the latter 8A to 11B (A minor to A major).
    There is one more "major to minor" trick (it works less times than the rest): adding 1 and changing from B to A (8B -> 9A).
    Please note (in general about mixing in key): use your ears! Even tough two songs should be compatible and they kinda sound right, they doesn't necessarily fit together! However when the key and the vibe are matching then something magical flows into your ears ;)
    happy mixing!

      @@labiteadudu8888 what style/genre of music do you mix? All the genres I mix involve phrase mixing, which means counting, which means math to a certain degree.
      Adding or subtracting either 7 or 2 form a Key doesn't sound any harder than figuring out a fitting phrase to transition - in my opinion.

    Mixing in key in a club is mostly useless (there is exceptions, like chill-outs or lounges). I've been in the business +20 years, and when you do a DJ set you move the music over the feeling of the people, how you read them, because you play for them to dance. Only producer sets are normally ready in key, and is more about showing the new productions than reading the crowd. There's a BIG difference between a DJ and a producer, being one of them doesn't makes you the other automatically, but of course you can be both at the same time. The sets presented by many producers in festivals are mostly not played as DJ, many professionals in the business will tell you this, Laidback Luke is one of the examples of someone that tells this openly.

    • @DJPao86
      @DJPao86 5 років тому +1

      indeed. Most of the DJs that have residencies are crap and some of them don't even beatmatch properly, let alone mixing in key.
      I still like oldschool seamless and decently long transitions, removing and changing instruments/vocals during the mix, EDM mixes are way too short (most of them just sounds like stop and play mixes).
      Technique is nice to have, but unfortunately it is not what makes DJ being hired. :(

    • @EduardoLobatoDJ
      @EduardoLobatoDJ 5 років тому

      @@DJPao86 Well, I have an oldschool technique of long mixes, about 1 and a half or 2 minutes long, and EQ song away, still I'm getting booked like crazy.

      If you are a wedding dj sure don't mix in key, if you want to be considered as a DJ I mean the real name then you better mix smoothly meaning in key unless your ears are completely out of keys. Getting booked doesn't mean that you are good, you can have the contacts or play in shitty bars for $100.

    Tonality synchron is not always working because of the chords and harmony, you need harmony synchron. It is not possible that the chord is Subdominant (IV) and the vocal sings VII Dominant, for example - you have direct tritonus (augmented quart) that sounds horrible. The example you show even sounds quite strange - chords are A - G - E- F , the singer sings E together with the chords and this octave sounds quite strange. Best solution is to take rhythm from one track and add harmony and melody from the other, like that avoiding interval, harmony and tonality chocking.

    Iorana jon.
    I not really fanatic with mixing key, but unconsciously I realize when I search my tracks to set my mixes there's in some of my tracklist a harmonic correspondence in 70% between them..that sound crazy but it's not a lie. Ok not all my tracklist are in harmonic, that more about what I feel when I listen one track.
    I try few years ago to follow the move of dj friends with the mixing key and honestly I don't like it so much...it's sounds too perfect and i feel i not able to be more creative in my research of tracks.

    a chord is a grouping of harmonically matched notes that make one sound correct? . so then how about a group of songs that is arranged in a "chord" that is then arranged in to "song". The set is limited by the choice of initial key. sets i prepare in this way tell more of a story. mixing in key song to song is important but many fail to apply this classical practice to the ENTIRE set

    some info about your video: you are wrong 1:43, it won't necessary 'clash' and sound horrible, it depends on the notes and harmony.... let's start from this, music is not created only by europeans, we have our own harmony and notes, but on another continent are different music scales, different notes, played by different instruments, so you are presuming that entire music is made by white european man:), which is wrong obviously, in africa, india china, there are completely different chords and musical scales (different then european use). another important fact is that for example since 80's all music (electronic) was sampled. So for example music producers/artist were taking sample from one record, and tune it (focusing on tempo) with another sample from another record. Just playing a vinyl with different speed will alter the tuning. Therefore especially in hiphop genre (before the computers era), there were a lot of music with samples simply out of tune, but not necessary by whole amount, let's sat 5-15%. Obviously most people used their ears to decide if it's 'clashin' or sounding good, but on another hand, because 'out of tune' samples put together, sometimes there were beautiful harmonies created, not 'correct' musically considering european musical scales. In general I agree with your video about considering mixing with 'harmony', but myself being long time heavy mpc user and sample creator noticed that theory is one and practice is another thing. Of course there are some notes, which mixed together will sound bad, weird or unpleasant, but I believ eif you are musician/artist, you should trust your ears and experiment.
