Between most of the tutorials I have watched to learn about DJing or overall any other skills, I found only a rare few people and channels that perfectly simplify and break down things to be easy to understand, to be easy to learn, and finally to have a satisfying outcome for the youtube watcher. I think you are one of those rare ones on youtube (music industry area) that have that perfect teaching skills and reflect those skills to others with even better explanations. Phrasing is made a million times easier if you take the time to mark out your songs too. Something as simple as a couple markers on every track just helps so you can focus more in the moment than on where exactly the song is. Also helps out heaps when on older gear with minimal to no waveforms
That’s the whole point of memory cues. But very true, everyone should really always store memory cues as exit points in there tracks else a lot of the time your just purely judging by size of the waveforms which can be deceiving at times. Just makes more sense to have a marker then you’ll always get a safe mix
This just recently clicked for me after over 9 years of djing like a hack basically. That’s all I can really say about it in terms of the difference phrase mixing has made on my sets. I went from a 3 to a 10 in terms of being a punchy dance floor stomper. Biggest change to my abilities ever.
Right on! Important vid!! I started spinning on vinyl. I would listened to my records and write the phrases down on pieces of paper. Then, based on what was written I would beat match and match phrases to perform a proper mix. Eventually everything came naturally. It's true, phrasing is one of the basic components of not only spinning, but with all musical instruments!!

Correct. Reading the grooves was uself when mixing a new tune live. Sometimes you would only get to listen to the tune in the shop before you played it that night at a club. Reading the grooves would let you know when a new break in the tune would begin thus increasing the likelihood of quality mix.
Im a bedroom Dj and have days where i mix good and other days i just fuck things up. This effect my mood to be honest. 1 day i think i nailed it and the other day i dont. Only we who feel this ? In 41 years of playing music, I've never heard the term, phrase mixing. In NYC, we just say the DJ has a good or great flow. This will help keeping your mixes aligned but you still need great timing and taste. That you cannot teach.
THIS IS GOLD! I started DJing and phrasing is what I struggle with the most. Especially with acid techno, where I can basically not identify phrases visually.
I guess you have to do it by ear. On those speedy bpm tracks there's sometimes a synth layer with chords progression going of for 4/8/16/32 bars that can help you break down the different parts of the song. Maybe spend more time preparing your sets : write down the bar's number when the changes happen ? Hope this helps !

If you need to look at a screen to know where to drop your record you shouldn't bother DJing. Real talk not trying to be an asshole, but music is about feeling. You got it or you don't. If you can't feel in the song where the phrase starts and have to see it on a screen then why bother?
@@jessealfieri1426 sorry, but when we used to DJ on vinyl we'd actually look at the grooves on a record to get a visual sense of when a break or drop was occuring in a track (as the record was spinning) - the same thing as looking at a waveform on a screen. Use whatever tools you have to their best advantage, and also play with feeling.
@@SamUrtonDesign pretty sure you completely missed the point of what i said. I have used vinyl for 25 years you may line up where to drop tge needle on a record, see where the breaks are or some changes in the track but then you line up phrasing with your ear not using a waveform!

Very true you have to keep the structure when transitioning songs.. i try to keep an eye on the bars to make sure it blends nicely. I have a few friends who they just drop the nest song anywhere and start the equing and sometimes it work but most times they clash vocals..

HeNRy Hu its all just practice man. I went into djing with a big love of music and vinyl records. Getting the best matching down at first is quite difficult, but once you get good and you understanding music and phrasing, you just automatically know when the next phrase is coming
Nice video as always, I've been getting the hang on phrasing lately :) The thing is when I record mixes I usually get too many breaks in my set because I just mix outro>intro most of the time. Whats a nice and clean way to mix songs without having too much breaks? When I listen to other sets I don't hear as many breaks as in my sets. Would appreciate some tips :)
Kommissar Soos I get what you’re saying, I don’t mean that I want to do drop after drop. I mix tech house or melodic techno stuff and I want to mix songs together sometimes without using the break/buildup/drop, just the ‘regular’ parts of the songs so a break/drop actually means something and only happens so often in the set and not every 3/4 minutes. I want the ‘groove/vibe’ to stay longer without being interrupted by a break every couple of minutes. But I don’t really know how to do this in a good way. It’s pretty hard to explain and I hooe you understand what I mean😬😁
Hey Jon, thank you very much for all your lessons. I had one question about phrase mixing. I have been practicing a lot, and it does make mixes sound a lot better. However, one big question I have is do you have to mix 16 bar phrases into 16 bar phrases? Or is it possible to go from 16 to 8, or 8 to 16? I feel like sometimes I play the next song at the beginning of the new phrase, but the mix sounds off still. It's difficult to recognize how long phrases are using the waveform sometimes, since vocals and other factors make the waveform hard to read sometimes. Sorry it's such a long question, but would love any advice.
Know your music, know approx does the song x have a long outro or not. Also pre listen to the intro in your headset, you'll know how many bars (even how much time) the intro takes, then you can use loops or even hot cues to save your mixes. I personally usually use hot cues instead of loops, it's just a matter of preference.
I'm trying to start this phrase mixing technique but I'm still not sold to it. I seem to enjoy looping in and out of tracks for transitions - gives me more control and more work to do I imagine. Is that a bad way of mixing? BTW, love the studio, radiators under the windows is pure my childhood home style from EU. In Australia we don't have those :D
I wish for this technique they use more vocal mainstream pop songs, because its waaaaayyyyy easier to understand it by using familiar songs, thus we can replicate it with vocal songs
hey Jon is there a good way to effectively use phrasing while also doing quick mixes, I mix a lot of tracks that are 5 mins + and waiting for the outdo can get a bit repetitive and boring for me? Thanks !
Hot cues is the answer bro. Program a hot cue at the beginning of the outro, then you can jump either after a drop or even a buildup (for some tracks is still sounds good enough). Make sure to activate quantize to not messup the rythm. You can also put cues to the last drop, then if a song has 3 drops, you can skip the 2nd. You can also jump to the 2nd break after the intro.
I’ve Dj’ed for almost 30 years and never realised it was so complicated. All of this is great but if you know your music and your crowd just slam it in. House is a feeling.......
Sandsie 1976 I agree and if you know your music and you’re feeling it, I would have thought you’d drop the mix with the phrasing in mind anyway, sub-consciously. Like mixing in key - you know if a song goes well with another one just from experience, even if you can’t articulate why
Complicated? Most of the electronic songs start with 16 bars intro and end with 16 bars outro. Some do 8, and some 24, some 4. If you're mixing the intro with the outro/another part, look that you align these parts that there is a natural change in timing, like it is "one big song". Sounds not so complicated to me. :) Learning english grammar in school was complicated haha :D (I'm german). Greetings and big respect for your 30 years of DJing. Keep on rocking the decks!

Now if you mix the street with the biker and the street is too short, everythings going to fck up because the poor biker will fall on his nose because these a**holes havent built the street long enough :D

4 channels just gives you the possibility to do more sophisticated mashups like: channel 1 is fading out, 2 plays the intro and you use the break of channel 3 and then drop the channel 4. It also helps with acapellas and maybe some samples (like the ''get your get your hand up'' martin garrix uses in all of his sets, he uses an independent player/channel for the sample). So to sum up, it helps with sophisticated mashups, needs a lot of training and mental coordination and really helpful to get an energetic set

Yeah, hes my favorite producer. Always using him in my mixes when i play for house parties, but its definitely a vibe that his music sets. Always trying to read the crowd to see when i can sneak him in. lol

If you prepare your tracks in an app like Pioneer's Recordbox, you can add a loop to the outro section of a song that's automatically triggered when the track hit's that section. The loop will play indefinitely until you fade into the next track - this allows for a much greater level of control as to how you can transition/mix between tracks.
Hi Jon, thank you for the tutorial, however my question is how do you know when to start the song and at what point so that it marrys up and fades out right as the new song drops or fades in ?
I personally prepare 30~40 songs for each houreven though one usually needs about 20. It gives me flexibility with the crowd and the possibility to do some mashups and drop mixing.

Put on a track designed for DJs (eg extended mix) listen to it, count the beats and when the 32 beat hits, something on the track will change. So u start you nxt song on the 33rd beat... Edwin Hernandez you completely missed the point of this video. Of course you can use the sync feature if you’d like but this video is about when making the transition.
you should make a video with some different genres and maybe like 3 ways/parts of the track to mix. cause some djs take intro/outro to mix but some want to mix faster ways like me and dont find tutorials for it and have to learn all the hard way😜

Can't believe we are still talking about "beatmatch" in 2019. I'm so blessed i grew up with turntables, real vinyl and mixing with these cdjs it's so easy, i could do it while taking a crap.
As a musician.... should I expect to teach my students with the mentality of “are we still talking about strumming on rhythm”? Everyone needs to learn. Most are not “born with it”. Some get it naturally. Some won’t. A true leader doesn’t call down the learning, but they will step in and help when needed.
So you said that you'll make transition full volume, without using faders, just playing both at the same time. And you missed the beat, it has overlapsed and you matched it later. So maybe people are feeling odd on the dancefloor of that happen, or maybe you need to use volume faders, because you cant always hit the same beat as the other song
He was doing that for the demo. I expect he would cue using headphones. If you are doing a really aggressive dirty set where the audience want to feel you working on the fly then you can slam it in and cue live. You need to be confident you can correct it in the right direction quickly which can be difficult on loud club systems

and changes usually occur in 16 bars and not 8 so it is easier to count 4 times 4 instead of 2 times 8 which is fucked. A bar is 4 beats, a phrase is 4 or 16 (4x4) bars, not 8(2x4). take the 2 out of the equation and you are much much safer, as a DJ and also as a Dancer ;)
TOP-tutorial Jon!! I could relate to lots of things in this video! I want to share an experience especially for the beginners in music-production & DJ'ing. _TLDR: Self distance to your works, yourself and your craft is C R U C I A L for success!!_ Last Saturday I was practice-DJ'ing. I decided, that I was going to "Stress test" my first ever super-simple track one hour into the mix; I really wanted to see how I would react and how it would measure to all the amazing tracks I'm playing every set (again, only me, in my house! No listeners!) I know it's not fair to compare myself like this (I mean it's my first track!) - but I just had to try! I knew I could be up for dissapointment, but hey I'm hardened! And I decided to take it as a "Don't try this at home" jackass experiment xD _Let the show begin!_ So, first; the transition is tricky because two grooves are clashing hard, but that was expected; it's my first try DJ'ing with my track - but I cover it up with every trick in my book. Then, the big question; "How far off the mark am I?" Now, my "Keep it simple" is playing on its own. In its current state, my track is more than minimalistic. And within a few moments: *CONFUSION!!* The almost total lack of phrase-emphasizing and the lack of these small things you mention at 7:20 - 7:45 threw me off BIG TIME, to the point it was frustruating! For real; I had no idea where I was! Totally lost!! (And yet I made the darn track! haha!!) I've never felt that before while DJ:ing! Seconds later, I realized how much my DJ'ing routine depended on these small things, where to take my next step as a producer and a lot lot lot more. I just want to point out that I know that these small details exist, and I've known it for a long time. I've just not prioritized understanding them until quite recently. Now the time has come; to figure out where to do what, learn how to do it - and see what I like the most. I've never played a weak production in a set, so I didn't know what to expect - but now I did, it was my own track - but this was ultimately a very healthy and funny moment! The research & development continues ^.^
When I started DJing in the early 70s, there was no beat matching. Just vinyl, slip cues and segues. You had to be creative and have a great ear and timing.
Tony Thomas totally agree brother me? Started in 74 and boy was it hard.. these kids today dont have a clue. Esp with decks with no vari speed. We had to put pressure on the side of platter.. they dont know they're born today
Have 25 years of djing experience and am glad i learned how to match beats by ear but i think the new technology allows more creativity, more options, and more ways to get the crowd into the music. Embrace it! Now it is more about taking mixes and the music to another level. You can remix songs live with out a sampler and make music sound how you envision it.

no they are both 16 bars long. the one mixing out just has before the new 16 bars part starts a small little break of two bars without a kick I wouldn't consider this as a seperate phrase it's just a small rest before the drop to the outro. and phrases are multiples of 2 not 4 but usually in pop music 8 bars in dance music 16

Uf I am hearing this a second time now from a DJ that the phrases are generally 8 bars, which is definitely wrong. Phrases are EITHER 4 or 8 bars. and THEY CAN be mixed!!! tehre can be 4 and 8 bar phrases in the same song!!!!! That the arrangment of contremprorary techno and house include generally changes every 32 beats doesn't mean a phrase is generally 8 bars long!! DO NOT GET USED TO THIS. many hip hop, edm or old pop/disco songs are not tailored to be ultra long and can probably have changes at every 4 bars not 8 bars! If you get used to 1 Phrase = 8 bars you will get fucked eventually. Just stick to the 4 bars which is the lesser divident. There is literally no music in the west out there, which does have smaller phrases than 4 bars, so if you stick to that you can always adapt very fast to 8 bar phrases without an issue, but if you get used to 8 bars your ear will betray you some day for sure. Back in the days they referred to this technique as reading the grooves. It what made Larry Levan so exceptional; knowing the music of the records.

I wish for this technique they use more vocal mainstream pop songs, because its waaaaayyyyy easier to understand it by using familiar songs, thus we can replicate it with vocal songs

hey Jon is there a good way to effectively use phrasing while also doing quick mixes, I mix a lot of tracks that are 5 mins + and waiting for the outdo can get a bit repetitive and boring for me? Thanks !
Hot cues is the answer bro. Program a hot cue at the beginning of the outro, then you can jump either after a drop or even a buildup (for some tracks is still sounds good enough). Make sure to activate quantize to not messup the rythm.
You can also put cues to the last drop, then if a song has 3 drops, you can skip the 2nd.
You can also jump to the 2nd break after the intro.

Sandsie 1976 I agree and if you know your music and you’re feeling it, I would have thought you’d drop the mix with the phrasing in mind anyway, sub-consciously. Like mixing in key - you know if a song goes well with another one just from experience, even if you can’t articulate why
Complicated? Most of the electronic songs start with 16 bars intro and end with 16 bars outro. Some do 8, and some 24, some 4. If you're mixing the intro with the outro/another part, look that you align these parts that there is a natural change in timing, like it is "one big song". Sounds not so complicated to me. :) Learning english grammar in school was complicated haha :D (I'm german). Greetings and big respect for your 30 years of DJing. Keep on rocking the decks!

Now if you mix the street with the biker and the street is too short, everythings going to fck up because the poor biker will fall on his nose because these a**holes havent built the street long enough :D

thank you for the video. I noticed in your video you had three channels on. I never played on a 4 channel controller before. Can you please make a video to show the difference about 4 channels vs 2 channels? Appreciate it!
4 channels just gives you the possibility to do more sophisticated mashups like: channel 1 is fading out, 2 plays the intro and you use the break of channel 3 and then drop the channel 4. It also helps with acapellas and maybe some samples (like the ''get your get your hand up'' martin garrix uses in all of his sets, he uses an independent player/channel for the sample). So to sum up, it helps with sophisticated mashups, needs a lot of training and mental coordination and really helpful to get an energetic set

If you prepare your tracks in an app like Pioneer's Recordbox, you can add a loop to the outro section of a song that's automatically triggered when the track hit's that section. The loop will play indefinitely until you fade into the next track - this allows for a much greater level of control as to how you can transition/mix between tracks.

20 tracks x hour = 3 minutes x track aprox.
I personally prepare 30~40 songs for each houreven though one usually needs about 20. It gives me flexibility with the crowd and the possibility to do some mashups and drop mixing.

Just use the Synch button on your DJ controler! !!! That's why it's there for, you don't need a college degree to use the Synch button to to beatmatch

Same way you would headphones.
Either leave one plug out your ear, or use the headphone master/cue dial on the mixer.

you should make a video with some different genres and maybe like 3 ways/parts of the track to mix. cause some djs take intro/outro to mix but some want to mix faster ways like me and dont find tutorials for it and have to learn all the hard way😜

Can't believe we are still talking about "beatmatch" in 2019. I'm so blessed i grew up with turntables, real vinyl and mixing with these cdjs it's so easy, i could do it while taking a crap.

Everyone needs to learn. Most are not “born with it”. Some get it naturally. Some won’t.
A true leader doesn’t call down the learning, but they will step in and help when needed.
So you said that you'll make transition full volume, without using faders, just playing both at the same time. And you missed the beat, it has overlapsed and you matched it later. So maybe people are feeling odd on the dancefloor of that happen, or maybe you need to use volume faders, because you cant always hit the same beat as the other song
He was doing that for the demo. I expect he would cue using headphones. If you are doing a really aggressive dirty set where the audience want to feel you working on the fly then you can slam it in and cue live. You need to be confident you can correct it in the right direction quickly which can be difficult on loud club systems

I count to 4 becasue 8 is a lie.
and changes usually occur in 16 bars and not 8 so it is easier to count 4 times 4 instead of 2 times 8 which is fucked.
A bar is 4 beats, a phrase is 4 or 16 (4x4) bars, not 8(2x4). take the 2 out of the equation and you are much much safer, as a DJ and also as a Dancer ;)

I want to share an experience especially for the beginners in music-production & DJ'ing.
_TLDR: Self distance to your works, yourself and your craft is C R U C I A L for success!!_
Last Saturday I was practice-DJ'ing. I decided, that I was going to "Stress test" my first ever super-simple track one hour into the mix; I really wanted to see how I would react and how it would measure to all the amazing tracks I'm playing every set (again, only me, in my house! No listeners!) I know it's not fair to compare myself like this (I mean it's my first track!) - but I just had to try! I knew I could be up for dissapointment, but hey I'm hardened! And I decided to take it as a "Don't try this at home" jackass experiment xD
_Let the show begin!_
So, first; the transition is tricky because two grooves are clashing hard, but that was expected; it's my first try DJ'ing with my track - but I cover it up with every trick in my book. Then, the big question; "How far off the mark am I?"
Now, my "Keep it simple" is playing on its own. In its current state, my track is more than minimalistic.
And within a few moments: *CONFUSION!!*
The almost total lack of phrase-emphasizing and the lack of these small things you mention at 7:20 - 7:45 threw me off BIG TIME, to the point it was frustruating! For real; I had no idea where I was! Totally lost!! (And yet I made the darn track! haha!!) I've never felt that before while DJ:ing! Seconds later, I realized how much my DJ'ing routine depended on these small things, where to take my next step as a producer and a lot lot lot more.
I just want to point out that I know that these small details exist, and I've known it for a long time. I've just not prioritized understanding them until quite recently. Now the time has come; to figure out where to do what, learn how to do it - and see what I like the most.
I've never played a weak production in a set, so I didn't know what to expect - but now I did, it was my own track - but this was ultimately a very healthy and funny moment! The research & development continues ^.^
When I started DJing in the early 70s, there was no beat matching. Just vinyl, slip cues and segues. You had to be creative and have a great ear and timing.

Have 25 years of djing experience and am glad i learned how to match beats by ear but i think the new technology allows more creativity, more options, and more ways to get the crowd into the music. Embrace it! Now it is more about taking mixes and the music to another level. You can remix songs live with out a sampler and make music sound how you envision it.
You've missed the phrase on the right deck by two bars... It begins when the kick comes out, not when the kick comes back in...

no they are both 16 bars long. the one mixing out just has before the new 16 bars part starts a small little break of two bars without a kick I wouldn't consider this as a seperate phrase it's just a small rest before the drop to the outro. and phrases are multiples of 2 not 4 but usually in pop music 8 bars in dance music 16

Uf I am hearing this a second time now from a DJ that the phrases are generally 8 bars, which is definitely wrong.
Phrases are EITHER 4 or 8 bars. and THEY CAN be mixed!!! tehre can be 4 and 8 bar phrases in the same song!!!!!
That the arrangment of contremprorary techno and house include generally changes every 32 beats doesn't mean a phrase is generally 8 bars long!!

many hip hop, edm or old pop/disco songs are not tailored to be ultra long and can probably have changes at every 4 bars not 8 bars!
If you get used to 1 Phrase = 8 bars you will get fucked eventually. Just stick to the 4 bars which is the lesser divident. There is literally no music in the west out there, which does have smaller phrases than 4 bars, so if you stick to that you can always adapt very fast to 8 bar phrases without an issue, but if you get used to 8 bars your ear will betray you some day for sure.
AND PROFESSIONAL DJs please do STOP telling people that a phrase is 8 bars.!
