for mastering i also use a plugin ( sound id) it really helps. it even lets me master properly on headphones. it saves a ton on expensive hardware. basically it looks at the frequency response and corrects it for headphones. for monitors you can get a mic and measure to make them flat taking into acount your room acoustics.

I'm doing something similar. Actually, the template I use to start each project has plugins on the master and reference tracks that I periodically enable and disable when comparing various parameters, including EQ for the mid-range, among others. It really helps to create a mix that will translate better on smaller speakers, phones, and laptops.

Had to stop the VT half way through, I had to to tell you how much I've learned already. When at the beginning you were expaining things ot was like you reading my mind with mid range issues, I could have finished every sentence you were about to say. I ve made great music, when I play it in the car it sounds crap.
I had to give up a career long life in music following a colossal heart attack that almost finished me off. I've down sized now as I'm getting older and come back to music back where I left off which was the birth of midi.
I have spent almost all my savings building a home studio and decided to stop spending as it wasn't making my recordings sound any better. I now realise there's nothing better than knowledge.
Now with heart failure, I'm using music to keep my mind offa things, so I need people around me than can cope with a beginner.
I'm so sorry about the long rant, but thanks for this VT I can't wait to try your techniques and other people that might consider helping.
    Best wishes,
    Quentin (UK)

Do You call mud the lower frequency of an hi hat? Well if yes that part it's not mud, if your case is finding on a single sound in a mix like an hi hat, supposed to have a range from 340 to up 10 khz something lower then 340 in the frequency spectrum you gonna cut, no matter if that lower part still be part of a sound, no matter if it's on the side or on the mid, no matter if it's not a hum or a wrong recorded sample you will still found mud on everything expecially on single sounds.???mud on a single source if it s really a problem means that your saMples and your recording process sucks other wise mud come from the interaction of more then one sound in a mix and its easy to fix with a simple narrow bell cut on the master. @@GravytyMusic that's nothing about mud it's simply what is called hum, buzz, wich is normal in a fully analog environments, noise floor it's something U had to deal with back in the seventies, from1990 till nowadays things are changed we are no more limited to a poor headroom and unwanted electrical noises issues unless you don't have updated knowledge, skills and equipment.

@@dmstudio.sicksoundz I am a electronic beat maker so yes I do use samples. Hi hats can cloud other high end instruments and other hi hats/cymbals so, dipping out and leaving room for each one is the same as mud for low mid range being stacked.. That's why I say this.

I always do a test in the car (stock sound system in an 04 Camry - it's brutal but honest - even reference tracks I like don't sound great but the bass is managed enough), and on a hi-fi system (not terribly expensive). I always check vs reference with a quick master on my track to get the level. I'd be scoping out a second hand set of three way hi-fi speakers and an amp - they're not that pricey and although they're not surgical they provide a good perspective on how the bass will work in the club. Again, testing on these alternate systems vs reference is key.

I've just tried mixing the mids as suggested with the ends filtered out in mono. Trouble was when I added in the highs and lows back, the mids were too loud and out of balance. My original mix just done by ear sounds better. Dunno, maybe my 60yr old ears are good enough. Will watch your other vids as I'm sure ill learn something as DAWs are new to me.
