I met a kid in the military that had the typical male pattern baldness at 18 years old. Blew my mind because I didn't know it could happen so early, especially so progressed.
this genuinely make me happy to see. I have alopecia areata too. Just a month and a half ago I gave in and shaved the last few thin tuffs of what was once a pretty thick hair. A year ago I had hair similar to disneys Snow-white. Today I could be egghead from Batman. It's been a journey for sure
The genetic angle is indeed complicated. My paternal side everyone has a full head of dark thick hair, and when my Dad died at age 78 we buried him with a beautiful head of barely salt and pepper hair. It was thinner than his younger days but no balding. My mother's hair is an opposite story, she had thin and fine hair and was turning grey in her 30's. There are 5 of us siblings. I am the oldest. Three of my sisters are practically bald,; my brother is bald. All four of them are grey now (we are all boomers), but I just have a fine streak of grey along my forehead. The rest of it is still a dark brown. My hair is fine but I used to have a lot of it but in recent years I have gone through periods of shedding. I have been on Minoxidil for several years and that has pretty much put a stop to it. Apparently I was the only one to get anything close to my father's genes, my 4 siblings and my daughter inherited my mother's hair genes. Go figure.
As a woman, when I was married I got deeply depressed and a day woke up to 3 bald spots about 3cm duameter and I freaked out, started taking biotin and used minoxidil (even though it's not recommended for women) and it worked pretty well. Few years after I shaved my had just out of boredom and I realized I looked good so I felt like a fool for having freaked out about my alopecia but I totally understand him trying to hide it in the beginning. Luckily I have really thick curly hair so my bald spots were hidden by my curls, but still affected my mental health a lot, specially cause I was already going through stuff that made me have alopecia in the first place.
It's funny because the way he described finally shaving it off perfectly describes how it felt for me. But i also had psoriasis which made it a pain to keep applying shit to your scalp if you have a lot of hair. But man it's so freeing once you get over the first part where you just look weird to yourself.
Gary thank you for what you do. Your so inspirational. I have alopecia areta universalis and I have struggles with it for years. It's really beats down a person. Keep doing what your doing. I support you to the fullest. Thanks again Gary.
Wow I haven't watched Dr Gary's newer videos for some time and I noticed how different his eyebrows look. It's weird seeing him with actual eyebrows because I started watching his videos right after he shaved his remaining hair
I like his honesty and the funny way he tell his story. Also how Radal just embraced the bald look, which in honesty, looks way better than the combover he was sporting before👍
I'm 32 and slowly starting to bald. Honestly, before this video, I thought there was no therapy, because that's what my friends were replied to, when they started balding.
It always breaks my heart how much baldness is an insecurity for people, especially men. Obviously any disconnect between how you desire to look and how you actually look can make people insecure, but I genuinely think that bald/really short hair is such a great look on so many people. I wish baldness were always a choice, rather than something that happens to people against their will, but I hope it eases someone's insecurity just a little to know that there are so so so many people who find baldness to be very handsome
I have a friend who's bald, and after he got covid he started losing his eyebrows. Apparently this is semi-common? Could you do a video on covid and hair loss?
My son started balding at 18 from the crown forward he's 27 now. I always thought it had started because of his diabetes. He just wouldn't take his meds and his numbers would be 300-400 (he's on meds now). It took us years to convince him to shave his head, he agreed to shave to a 1 and he feels better for doing so. I watched my son go throw exactly everything he did broke my heart now he's happier and that all that matters
You need to realize the big thing about it all. You live in a world God didn’t want, death. And you seen elements of death everywhere in subtle ways. But the world tells you it’s normal to cover up its sicknesses.
Wrestler Shawn Michaels had this type of balding for years. It wasn't quite as diffuse, however. He used his strong forelock hair to slick it back into a ponytail and held it together with a rubber band. It wasn't until the last 5 years that it got noticeable to the point where he shaved it off entirely. There are definitely ways around it if you still have a strong hairline. IMO he'd be a good candidate for SMP if he doesn't want to go too invasive.
I'm not sure finasteride would be appropriate for a 16y/o male with androgenic alopecia because their body may not have finished developing by that point. While finasteride may slow or prevent the progression of hair loss in these patients, it could restrict further growth in height. This is because in preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), it causes an increase in free testosterone in the body. Although testosterone has a reduced androgenic effect (is less potent) compared to DHT in hair and skin, the testosterone increase can cause an increase in estrogen, as testosterone can be converted into estrogen. While this estrogen increase is negligible in most developed adults, it may prevent younger patients from reaching their height potential. This is because the growth plate in the long bones is regulated by the cumulative estrogen concentration, whereby when a threshold concentration is exceeded, the growth plate will begin to close. This is why women (on average) tend to be shorter than men, as women ordinarily have much higher serum estrogen concentrations compared to men. Just something for younger people starting finasteride to bear in mind :)
@@peyton.simpson Yes, it can prevent facial and body hair from developing further/ slow facial and body hair development, although if you were to stop finasteride the facial and body hair would continue to develop as normal, but so would the hair loss that you were trying to prevent. Unfortunately this is not the case for height, so if finasteride was to cause the growth plate to fuse prematurely then stopping the medication would not reverse this. Once the growth plates fuse, you cannot grow taller
I'm 17 and growth plates closed Will naturally my face grows after that plates are closed? Like some bones in jaw and cheeks? If not then I would use Finastride
I am interested in what type of therapies are available to older, post menopausal woman who have had PCOS. I struggled with PCOS, and now have male-pattern baldness and I'm 57. In my teens my hair was lush and dark, wavy brown. Now it's thin, rather stringy gray, and retains little wave. Unfortunately I'm also relatively poor, widowed three years ago, on disability and I doubt Medicare thinks a hair transplant is medically necessary! Thank you! I am watching your videos after seeing your reaction to a Doctor Mike video. Glad to have found you!!
The nice shave thing is real! Having a symmetrical, smooth-looking skull can be attractive as all hell. I know from experience because my husband, growing up, always had a pretty large forehead with a high hairline and a pretty small chin, when I met him he had been balding for a few years and decided to shave all his hair off and grow a beard, which is quite full nowadays. That's why looking at his old photos is always jarring to me, because the ratios of his face were all off and I think he looks so much better now.
I have a coworker who's 22 and is totally bald. I knew I was losing my hair since about 16, but now I'm 26 and suprising still Norwood 1. Thought I'd be way worst at this age 😁
I shaved my head because I wanted to (no medical reasons). I didn’t do it for aesthetics either. I didn’t find myself beautiful in the mirror afterwards but it was fun to experience. It was so strange to really FEEL the water on my skull, I was used to have my thick hair cover it. I recommend the experience to anyone that doesn’t have a problem with being less attractive for a while. I think I may be privileged though because most of my friends told me I had a beautiful skull shape and that it wasn’t weird or anything. Maybe if I had an alien head it might’ve been less funny to do.
I shaved my head with clippers(no guard)at 18 because I was stoned, bored and rewatching breaking bad. I really liked the look and shaved my head the whole summer, because it kept my head cool when i went to the pool and I really liked the look. When I started college I started growing my hair long, and at 20 I noticed it had diffused a bit. I freaked out and went to a barber to cut my long locks off into my old hairstyle from highschool and it looked great. I grew it long again and it's bascically the same unnoticeable lightly diffused hair I had at 20. Because I know how I look with a shaved head and beard, and like it I know I will probably shave it if it gets too bad. But I really like having long hair, so I'm gonna roll with that for as long as I can.
@@fbj1223 yeah if I knew I had a limited time to appreciate my hair I wouldn't have shaved it I think... I would've kept loooooooong hair and shaved it when I started to get bald. But thankfully I'm a woman I don't have to think about that 😂

Your channel is great. I have always been paranoid about my hair and like that my head looks ok when shaved. You look great Dr. Greg. I have had a small spot at my part my whole life and always paranoid it would grow. If anything at all has happened in 30 years, besides turning much white, it has been from me poking and prodding the spot. When they cut a fade it is not visible at all but when I grow out my hair it is just a divot in my hairline I have had my whole life.. I certainly recommend medical intervention for friends. Mexicans are less subject? My dad is like a Norwood 3 at 70, but I feel he has been there since his 20s. Such a weird mixed bag in the roulette wheel of hair genes.
After having my son my hair started to fall out so I decided to shave it all off, total GI Jane, and it was the best thing I could've done. It was so much easier not having to bother about my hair on a morning whilst taking care of a new baby. I've grown and shaved it again a couple of times since x
My brother’s hair went white by his mid-twenties. He tried dying it and he just looked ridiculous because he’d have to keep getting his roots done so he stopped. 30 years later he’s still got a full head of hair as do I but I’m rapidly catching up with him in the silver department.
my husband’s the same! He started going grey in middle school and now at age 35 he’s entirely silver. He dyed it when we first met but eventually felt like it was a waste of time and money (not to mention it damaged his already-crappy hair) and now I think he looks great! No hints of hair loss yet but the silver hair is definitely a talking point (he’s Japanese/we’re in Japan and sometimes he gets crap from people who think he’s dyed it silver on purpose lol)
my first white (more silver looking honestly) hair appeared when I was 9 or 11. my mom noticed it. when i was 15 it was silver all over I'm 22 and it's pretty much the same as when I was 15 my hair is still clearly brown but it has a lot of noticeable silver everywhere I think it looks cool
I'm turning 22 this year and face a similar situation, sadly therapy is not an option since it can get quite expensive where I live. Hope I'll gather as much courage as he did before I look like a young grandpa :D
While getting hair short or even shaving it off completely is still a good choice for men, I find that women don't have such options. If a woman shaves her head or gets it really short, people automatically assume that something is seriously wrong, maybe chemotherapy or such. I wish women balding to also be embraced so they can also feel the freedome we feel after shaving the few remaining strands of hair.

Love your channel, please keep it up! Question, have you or will you chat about future state of hair restoration technology, specifically lab grown follicles that will, hopefully, become the mainstay if the technology bores out? And would you begin to train and offer that service if the industry progresses to this offering as a norm?
I had Alopecia areata from my neck upwards and half the top of my head from my temple went bald. I lost more than half my head and was worried the baldness front and back of my head would meet in middle. I literally was on every antibiotic and had steroid ointments but they only thing that made it grow back was actually regularly scraping the bald patches and encourage the skin, freshen the follicles they came back with thin grey hairs, i protected with my life until they became brown and fuller again.
Once I started losing my hair around 27-28 I just let it go and cut it off. Now I’m 33 and have been rocking the baldy with a beard ever since and I enjoy the look

I had several gray hairs since my teens. Early in my adulthood I decided to shave my head. I let my hair grow a bit and found out that I was balding. Thought that shaving my head was ruining my scalp somehow. I still shave my head because I like it. Didn’t know until years later that my father had it worse than I did.
so this is when randomly browsing youtube at 2 AM pays off... i didnt even know that you could treat this kind of hair loss with medication. i always thought there was nothing you could to about hair loss. my Dad has been bald ever since he was a teen too. i have 2 sons and was a bit afraid that they might have inherited it and experience hair loss like him too. they're still young, but if it does happen when they get older, at least i know there's something you can do :)
My dad and his dad were both fairly bald. Both had combovers and grey hair since they were in their 20s. My mom's father had a luxurious head of dark hair till he was in his 60s. Luckily, I took after my mom's father in the baldness department. I'm 42 and (knock on wood) still show no signs of thinning. Greyness on the other hand... sucks, I took after my dad's side of the family there. I started greying in my mid 30s and it's almost getting to be more salt than pepper these days. I might thinking about hair dye but my damn beard is turning white too, and it grows fast so can't dye that unless I want to do it twice a day lol. I don't care that much anyway. When I was in my teens and 20s I shaved my head half the time just cause it was easier not to worry about keeping it neat. Now I'm afraid that if I shave it off then it won't come back! As you said that's silly but you know, people are strange.
Grey hair is easier to deal with than going bald. Because you still have lots of hair that you can dye any color you want. I have seen older guys with thick full and totally grey hair. It actually looks super cool!

Gary, one of my childhood best friends developed Alopecia areata in 9th grade (unnoticed for a while because he had his hair in a mowhawk for a year.) So I really feel for you and hope you're confidence is getting a huge boost with how much people are enjoying your content!
Amazing he’s so light about all this. Comedy from dark stuff is something I respect so much. I have a condition effecting my diet and intake of food! I lost hair but honestly his confident is amazing. Iv still got plenty but freaked me out. So honestly so much respect! I’m on menoxidil now and vitamins. And if I need tablets but I’m just finding so much comfort from this video
I love the recommendations for the channels you react to! The creators are so talented!
I met a kid in the military that had the typical male pattern baldness at 18 years old. Blew my mind because I didn't know it could happen so early, especially so progressed.
Don’t be surprised when this world is disgusting and broken.
this genuinely make me happy to see. I have alopecia areata too. Just a month and a half ago I gave in and shaved the last few thin tuffs of what was once a pretty thick hair.
A year ago I had hair similar to disneys Snow-white. Today I could be egghead from Batman. It's been a journey for sure
I hope your hair will grow back soon. My battle was 6 years long before it stabilized
Go figure.
Was your mothers father bald as well?
You're 60 with all brown hair?!?
just eat keto diet or aajonus vonderplanitz primal natural human diet that alk
@@lisettegarcia Other than a streak at my temples and forehead of about a half an inch, yes.
@@cellgrrl so, okay, not all brown
I actually set an appointment because of that video, thanks Doc. Btw I watched Radal video some time ago but it didn’t convinced me.
Gary thank you for what you do. Your so inspirational. I have alopecia areta universalis and I have struggles with it for years. It's really beats down a person. Keep doing what your doing. I support you to the fullest. Thanks again Gary.
That is one great guy and full of smile inducing personality. His character needs no green screen, the camera only captures who he is all around.
Wow I haven't watched Dr Gary's newer videos for some time and I noticed how different his eyebrows look. It's weird seeing him with actual eyebrows because I started watching his videos right after he shaved his remaining hair
Welcome back! Don't leave us again :((
@@drgarylinkov I've been noticing your brow hair too. They look like mine 😅. Lil half brows
Doc, your eyebrows are almost back . It's very noticeable, I'm so glad.
I had no idea who this guy was but he has great energy and I like his editing, the flamingo in the back was the cherry on top hahaha
You do have a great head shape though.
I think Doc is super hot
I've recently subscribed and have watched many, many of the doc's videos. This is by far my favorite!
Many guys look really great bald.
You really do have a nice head shape Dr. Gary. And you look good with the new eyebrows and shadow mustache
Like he says about weight loss/gain, if your body or mind is going through a lot then your hair can fall out.
Love the storytelling style
Lol such a humble guy, made me laugh. Don't worry man, we're all going through it.
It's nice that Radal has such a good sense of humor about his experience.
Whoa, you got way more hair than I'm used to seeing Dr Linkov-hope something is workin for ya and it isn't just temporary. 🤘🏻
Its nice that he spoked about it, he is so funny also 🤩 its so nice how he see the good part of this
10:41 it's not just about seeking the medical care, it's pricey, not everyone has that option
Will it prevent facial hair development in younger men aswell?
@@peyton.simpson Yes, it can prevent facial and body hair from developing further/ slow facial and body hair development, although if you were to stop finasteride the facial and body hair would continue to develop as normal, but so would the hair loss that you were trying to prevent. Unfortunately this is not the case for height, so if finasteride was to cause the growth plate to fuse prematurely then stopping the medication would not reverse this. Once the growth plates fuse, you cannot grow taller
I'm 17 and growth plates closed
Will naturally my face grows after that plates are closed? Like some bones in jaw and cheeks?
If not then I would use Finastride
Pick one lol bald or short
I am interested in what type of therapies are available to older, post menopausal woman who have had PCOS. I struggled with PCOS, and now have male-pattern baldness and I'm 57. In my teens my hair was lush and dark, wavy brown. Now it's thin, rather stringy gray, and retains little wave. Unfortunately I'm also relatively poor, widowed three years ago, on disability and I doubt Medicare thinks a hair transplant is medically necessary! Thank you! I am watching your videos after seeing your reaction to a Doctor Mike video. Glad to have found you!!
And then get some graphs.. I’m going to what your video on that.
God bless you man for what you’re doing
I had to watch this guy again, because he's hilarious. 😂👏
17:53 It's called the "Just shave it bro!"
But thankfully I'm a woman I don't have to think about that 😂
I shaved my hair 2 fucking times and both time was on accident you don't know the pain of the regret i got because i was like "WHY DID I FUCKING SHAVED MY HAIR"
@@TheBizarreChannel how can you shave your hair on accident ? 😂
@@victoriia I meant I flopped my haircut and had to shave it entirely
I love your new look…totally agree, being bald is way more attractive than balding! Bald is very 🥰
After having my son my hair started to fall out so I decided to shave it all off, total GI Jane, and it was the best thing I could've done.
No hints of hair loss yet but the silver hair is definitely a talking point (he’s Japanese/we’re in Japan and sometimes he gets crap from people who think he’s dyed it silver on purpose lol)
my first white (more silver looking honestly) hair appeared when I was 9 or 11. my mom noticed it.
when i was 15 it was silver all over
I'm 22 and it's pretty much the same as when I was 15
my hair is still clearly brown but it has a lot of noticeable silver everywhere
I think it looks cool
I'm turning 22 this year and face a similar situation, sadly therapy is not an option since it can get quite expensive where I live. Hope I'll gather as much courage as he did before I look like a young grandpa :D
Lots of young folks rock the bald look, you just gotta style it differently!
Here in india topical minxodil cost 3$ and oral finasteride also cost 3$ per month and i earn 5000$ per month 💀💀💀💀💀
I keep coming back to this when I need to feel energy ^_^
I love the thumbnail of this video 😂❤️
While getting hair short or even shaving it off completely is still a good choice for men, I find that women don't have such options. If a woman shaves her head or gets it really short, people automatically assume that something is seriously wrong, maybe chemotherapy or such. I wish women balding to also be embraced so they can also feel the freedome we feel after shaving the few remaining strands of hair.
omg RADAL i havent seen in a long while
That’s what it is ! Eyebrows, and maybe a bit of a moustache shadow....? Super handsome either way 😁. As someone once said ....“ cute is when your personality shines through your good looks “ Keep up the great content .
Have you ever read roald Dahl's book called the twits? I loved those books as a kid and this saying reminds me of something in his book. "A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”
Totally agree, well said !
This dude was hilarious 😂 When he compared himself to the avatar I was like wait a minute Dr Gary kinda could be adult Aang. Definitely a great head shape
That's traumatizing. Hope all's well now
" I asked Google why is there a hole in my head" I laughed & laughed 😂
Loved your reaction. Loved his vid. Lads!
Once I started losing my hair around 27-28 I just let it go and cut it off. Now I’m 33 and have been rocking the baldy with a beard ever since and I enjoy the look
I pray my doctor can tell me if my hair loss is permanent. I’m just sick over losing my hair at 61 . This is soooo devastating. Wish I could get a hair transplant. Wish wish. I had beautiful hair 2 months ago . It’s October 3 2022. My heart goes out to all u woman & men . Hope u fine a cure. By the way Dr you look amazing & confident. God bless you & your work. ❤
Can you make a video about post finansterid syndrome? Or what are your experiences/thoughts about that topic?
Honestly, my hair is such a big part of my life and losing it is such a big fear of mine
This is so cute 😂😂 love it, I'm so happy for him
I had several gray hairs since my teens.
Funny there was an ad for simfort in this video. Wonder what his opinion on that.
The dude in this video is very funny. I'm glad he's found new confidence after shaving his head. It really looks good on him too!
I’m so happy for him
My dad and his dad were both fairly bald.
@@36137 agree. I've battled both and white hair was a nuisance but it wasn't traumatizing
youre in the wrong place if youre looking for empathy for just getting grey hair... lmao mid 30's.... 99% of the ppl watching this video wish they were moderately as lucky as you.
5:05 I dont think you should recommend a 16 year old boy to take finasteride, since he could still be in his puberty.
1 pill and his life is over.
Dear Doctor, you have officially become part of sosig gang!
Most guys, if not all, look great bald, there's no reason to be insecure!
OMG that dude is hilarious...thanks for giving me a cool new channel to subscribe to! He's awesome!
I do feel for him although his storytelling is great. My hair right now is going grey/white Last year when I discovered it I really had to take a moment to process it. I'm okay with it now but it's just a smack in the face when you're young. I can't imagine this with becoming bald for a man.
You look good bald Doc!!! No BS!
Wow - I’m 50 and I don’t think I have any hair loss but watching all of these videos is making me CRAZY!! 😅
