This was such a well documented video and thanks for your commentary. I'm a month since my FUE in Turkey and it's a long road. The biggest struggle first month is the washing of hair with the foam and shampoo, washing hair everyday and not being able to apply a cream just made my scalp feel so dry. I eventually used aloe Vera gel after week 3. The itchiness just stopped like a week ago, the donor area. It wasn't a bad itch but there. I didn't leave a feedback for my clinic when though they wanted a video of me while there, I prefer to wait the whole post op than leave a review on the day of the operation. They were nice, professional and hopefully 6 months time I'll be able to document my journey too but nothing before. I'm not going to send hopefuls to a clinic just because they were nice on the day of the OP. 20:28, if Finisteride is to prevent hair loss, and I've had HT of good follicles to transplant area, what's the logic behind using it? It's so depressing to think one would use a tablet for life at a risk of E.D, I'd rather be a bald head with a full hard one than Tarzan with head full of hair and got a floppy snake 🐍. Thanks for the video.

Got COVID in March of this year and experienced extreme hair shedding that started in May, and is still ongoing to this day... 5 months later. My scalp is a disaster area. I got a buzz cut last week and now I can see the full extent of the damage. My hair is very thick so nobody believed this was even happening until I shaved and took pictures. Devastating feeling. Glad to hear your hair grew back. I am hoping that this is just COVID induced telogen effluvium and not rapid onset androgenic alopecia. For awhile I had thought the shedding was being caused by creatine

hi doc! Big fan here! Can you please do a short video on FUE recovery? I.i., returning back to strenuous exercising, having your first shave, using normal shampoo, etc?
My older brother started balding in his mid 20s while my hairline stayed strong, I used to poke gentle fun at him over it. I just kind of assumed that maybe I'd be one of the lucky few who get to keep their hair into old age, we have a few men in my family who have done.. then about a year ago at 31, my balding started making up for lost time. I went from a full head of very thick hair to the receding hair line and pretty intense thinning on the crown very quickly. Karma for my jokes at my brothers expense. Needless to say he's enjoying it very much.
I started losing my hair when I was really young. There was one guy I used to work with way back who had this thick impressive head of hair and always made fun of me. He would be the last guy I'd thought would lose his hair. Fair enough, I saw him on Facebook about 10 years ago. He's now bald as a coot. You just never know what's further down the path.
Doctor, are there any studies looking at whether there is correlation between the way hair grows in as a baby and the way it is lost later in life? Is it a last in first out type of thing? Or is it nothing?
Dr Gary's I am quite shocked many plastic surgery procedures, hair graphs, and as you and the gentleman who made the video mentioned dental procedures that I can assure should either be done with general anesthesia as opposed to needles stuck in an already super sensitive mouth for a root canal. Xanax or Valium wouldn't help much as I already am prescribe the afore 1mg 3 x daily. Not because I like them, I've been on them for 15 years due to panic attacks and night terrors. I have terrible panic attacks so my Dr and I choose this and I still suffer horrible night terrors. It is unbelievable I get stuck in dreams where I'm being tortured by very evil people. I can't recall if I feel pain but I don't wake until someone hears me scream and shakes me. I'm not quite sure who the people in those dreams terrorizing me are but thinking now likely my last dentist with his evil needles and chair he never warns when he will push me up or down. Yeah I do need general anesthesia and then a needle prior to waking for that pain!
interesting that early transplant patients like Sinatra, Elton John and myself all had the operation and ended up wearing wigs since eventually the donor sites get exposed as you age and you have no choice. If I had my life to live over I would shave my head in my twenties and save the embarrassment and cost of all this nonsense.
May I ask what would cause extremely rapid receding hairline? I always had a little bit as I am 36... but in the passed 2 months it has become BAD. If I continue at this rate I will be completely bald by the time i'm 40.
I have a question about finasteride and minoxidil , At the clinic they told me that the Topical solution that they produce that contains finasteride and minoxidil + other ingredients would be enough treatment without the pills and would also be reduced side effects of the medicine. My question: Is the topical solution as effective as taking the pills? if not do you recommend taking the pills (finasteride and minoxidil) and topical solution at the same time? Also would it be better if I got a pill cutter and micro dose finasteride and minoxidil with the topical solution? what do you think Doc. Also thanks in advance.
One note about the mentioning of lower testosterone: taking finasteride actually increases testosterone levels in the body, as the testosterone that would be turned into DHT is simply not converted.

Doctor I have a question. Is it recommended to stop taking finesteride and minoxidil before your hair transplant? As someone who has been taking both for a few years now and have decided to go through with surgery, I've geen told to stop taking it about a month before the procedure and was just curious on your thoughts.
if you've already been taking it I think just continue, from what I've heard they suggest you don't start before, so that the transplant doctor can judge the donor area better... however taking it before means that you wont need as many grafts as you've stabilised more hair
@Dimitri: The continuous intake of Finasteride is very important to protect the transplanted hair from attacks of DHT, and to keep the hair you still have.Using minoxidil on freshly transplanted sites, I would be very careful, would even suspend it for some time. Unfortunately, minoxidil and finasteride have a synergistic effect. The quality of the hair that is affected could decrease.

Will you be doing a video in the future about balding in women or the pros and cons of medications such as spironolactone? Love your videos!
I lost my hair in my early 20s and never thought about it much until I found your videos a couple of months ago. I'm 47 now, and to be honest, too busy to dwell on it. What's your opinion of the recent Japanese research that grew hair in a lab ?
mind saying what research is it?

Dear Dr Linkov, could you please talk about female balding, especially related to insulin resistance and thyroid problems, how the could be treated (selenium, etc), how long it takes to recover? Thank you. 🙂
How about a video discussing color of hair and it's relevance to transplantation? Are grey hairs viable? Do darker hairs do better than lighter?
We can do a short on that for sure
Doesn’t Finasteride INCREASE overall testosterone by decreasing the synthesis of DHT? Repeatedly in his video it’s mentioned that he experienced side effects related to decreased testosterone levels - of which is somewhat dubious if my above thought is correct.
Thanks for the great video!
You’re right, testosterone goes up, I didn’t make that correction in my comments.
Yeah finasteride has no negative impact on test levels, it's purely DHT reduction and therefore a slight increase in testosterone.
I thought this too and expected Gary to correct. Glad to see it followed up here
Since it increases T, does it mean gym goers will see some different results?
im curious too about this, seems logical that it will be beneficial
Possibly a video on dermititis on the SACLP and FACE and treatments moving forward for short term treatment and long term treatment and types of treatments available and trust worthy thanks 👍.
This would be awesome, also combined with eczema and how derma rolling affects this 🙏
12:28 but aren't test levels not still the same (or slightly higher) on finasteride? If test is not getting converted into dht then wouldn't there be marginally more instead of less test?
Correct, fin does not decrease testosterone levels.

Hey there! Could you share where you went? Also how many grafts and how much it cost you? Thanks!

I’m over 50 and glad I still have a full head of hair. I’m Native American and guess it’s just genetics. But I had severe Covid 2 years ago and my hair really thinned out and thought it was permanent but it’s back to full thickness again 🙏

Honestly i feel like balding is a business. It should have a perfect cure by now but that would just ruin all the business.
Doctors can't cure many diseases. Medical science hasn't progressed much in the past 50 years
Well to be fair, the business is the cure but I see what you’re getting at.
hi doc! Big fan here! Can you please do a short video on FUE recovery? I.i., returning back to strenuous exercising, having your first shave, using normal shampoo, etc?
I am confused. Everything I have read says that finesteride actually raises testosterone levels by 10-15%?
Really? Never even heard of a raise in test.

Doc, what do we think about rosemary oil as a substitute for Rogaine? What do we think about rosemary oil for hair regrowth in general?
"Some people use staples" why was that funny? Why did I laugh at that?
I remember the Internet forums saying 2020 was the year that hair loss would be “cured”😢
It's always 5-10 years away 😢
But then the negative feedback mechanism kicks in and it can be converted to oestrogen via aromatisation.
No use of testosterone if it's functional variant itself is not available.
I truly appreciate the thoughtfulness of these videos. Your comments are insightful and helpful. Were NY a realistic option for me, I'd certainly be interested in a consultation from City Facial Plastics. I live in the LA area. Can you recommend any doctors or clinics in the area? I've tried Googling the topic, but there are so many garbage results through which to sift. Any input would be sincerely appreciated.
Great video very informative. I just wanted to ask why didn’t you go over the prosthesis option
Dr.Gary if some one is using finasteride and minoxidil.....would you say don't use anything else like a store bought shampoo or conditioner that contains caster oil or DIY fruit blend hair rinse where u blend up strawberry and keep it on your head for a few minutes them rinse it off? Would you suggest only doing the finasteride and minoxidil only?
Not sure where to ask this, but as far as the scientific literature i've read over the last few years indicates, swelling isn't the villain it used to be deemed as for recovery. Seems that despite the relief cold or elevation (from RICE) might give from pain or pressure, more blood flow to the area seems to help the area heal better.
Would this apply to a hair transplant, too? Seems another important factor in recovery is sleep, so resting slightly more horizontal after a procedure might be conducive to better sleep and more blood juice to the head to nurture and heal the grafts. It's also totally possible the swelling around the head would just induce headaches and pressure to the point they can't sleep at all.
What's the good Doctor Linkov's take on this.
Cheers for all the insight,
Finasteride, originally prescribed to counter prostate hyperplasia, turned out to heighten the risk of more agressive prostate cancer at a later age.

Don't stop finasteride but stopping Minoxidil a week before surgery is fairly normal
My grandfather only had a little hairloss at the temples when he died at 89. My dad is only 68 and has it at the crown as well. How is this possible?
I know two brothers close in age, one is 48 one 42. 48 has head full of hair, no balding, no receding while the other has been losing his hair since 30 and 42 is pretty much bald. Some ppl are just lucky.
You are looking at wrong familly, thats why. Male baldness is transfered through X (female chromosome) so you need to look at your grandmothers side of the familly to see why your dad is bald.
Genes are still randomized.
A mom and dad can have 5 boys. Let’s say they’re 6ft and 5’7. There’s a chance some are shorter than dad, some are taller than dad, some are even shorter than mom, etc. Dad just wasn’t lucky.
