As a former UMvC3 head who became a Smash Bros ProjectM player, news like this gets me so hype
Project M was the last time competitive smash was exciting imo.
@@hollowowlyt melee has been popping off post-quarantine, there's so much cool stuff going on in the comp scene rn with so many top players that can take home titles. the game is more competitive now than it ever has been at a top level

i wasn't talking about mods, both are great for their own reasons though. melee ofc has insane netcode whereas (for now) brawl still has really bad netcode. also melee has a way lower barrier of entry for getting into modding than brawl has. that said though the brawl modding scene has been way bigger for way longer so yea they've definitely achieved overall grander things like pm ex remix and the tag battle system with taunts and all that
@@FluppietheRockruffFan Brawl modding is definitely way better, melee will have cool stuff but filesize restrictions and sheer intensity of how much Brawl has been modded just laps it several times over. I wouldn't call it better competitive though, it's just a lot more open.
I'd say next big hurdle is custom animations. Would make it a hell of a lot easier for modders to more faithfully create the characters in their vision. The modder did an absolutely fantastic job of removing the limiter on how many characters that can be added
From what I’ve seen from twitter, that hurdle has almost been crossed. Still got some problems to fix, but it’s definitely possible.
It would be cool if we could get an interview with Gneiss (if that interests them). I would like to hear their process, how much time per day they spent on this project, what motivated them (aside from the cash reward), etc. I think it could be very inspiring/motivational to/for other modders (and people interested in modding).
For my part, I wanna see them share a stream with Max as they play UMvC3 together.

The next thing to mod into UMvC3... Rollback Netcode. This new roster mod and rollback would finally make this a complete game. Fingers crossed that we see those changes in the near future.

I'm don't know what I'm talking about and totally pulling this out of my ass, so takes this with a grain of salt, but I imagine changing something as fundamental as the netcode without access to the source code is nigh impossible.

As someone who came up and was in the MUGEN fighting community for many many years, this is def starting to look like 3D Mugen which is a glorious thing
I'll believe it if they add C Falcon. We all know Iron Fist or Nova is already half the character.

A similar thing happened to the Dragon Budokai Tenkaichi 4 mod, where before they had to replace characters, now they can add without needing to remove character already in the game, and the newest patch they restored the content they had to remove.
It's really cool and absolutely incredible the talent modders have.
Maybe someone could mod more pages into the character select screen. Then you could turn the page on the screen like a comic book revealing blank roster slots that you could add the mod characters into them.
That would be beyond 😎
This is what I'm hoping for too, since there's already a page turning animation for going back and forth between the characters and stage selects. That would make it much easier to have characters viewable

that would be great, another cool thing could be to just make it like the mvc2 css although then obviously u run into the issue of what happens when too many characters get added, that said as an aesthetic design choice that would be just as great

@@madeuinheavan108 Disney (The Mouse), They own Marvel. Capcom isn't likely to step in, they seem to be fairly lax when it comes to modding and such, rather hands off approach to Monster Hunter games at least. How ever Disney is worse than Nintendo when it comes to smiting people with Copyright.

Who knows how far this game will go now. I don't play UMVC3 but it's been really amazing to see what people are doing with it.
It finally happened. Goddamn, never underestimate the modding community/fans. With this much creativity, hard work, and endless amount of possibilities for Modded UMVC3, it's becoming like the next gen M.U.G.E.N.
Not a UMVC3 player but this is massive. Hats off to Max and Genesis.

The fact that people are discovering new breakthroughs with modding UMVC3 really fascinates me, in MVC1 you also had to scroll off the character select screen on a certain character to select hidden ones such as Roll, Shadow Lady or Gold Ironman, some people even found out how to play as Onslaught which is pretty neat.
If possible, they should create winquotes for the modded characters, and have the voice actors (or really convincing replacements) to voice special intros and winquotes and stuff like that! That could be the next step

Side note on the modder: I don't know them, and perhaps they choose that pronunciation for some reason, but the word "gneiss" is actually pronounced "nice", not "genesis", and (for those unaware) is a term in geology to describe a metamorphic form of rock formed by changing schist, granite, or volcanic rocks through intense heat and pressure. I just want to make sure the modder gets the recognition they deserve, so that those who remember more from audio than visual won't miss out on following Gneiss by trying to find the modder "Genesis".

First time actually commenting this early!! Modded anything on a game to make it stand out more and more is most definitely welcome, and this is a huge milestone for UMvC3!!!

Once Super Smash Bros Brawl got a roster expansion tool… that is when the modding scene blew up. That via the Project M dev team is when Smash mods truly began, and what lead to things like Melee rollback in Slippi, all the other game mods, and the variety of awesome tools and fan made features made since then.
Seeing this for Marvel vs. Capcom… this could be the start of something truly special.
Custom animations and rollback are what's needed to just make this game 3D MUGEN. Rollback is being worked on but custom animations is the next big hurdle IIRC.
This is genuinely fantastic news, can't wait to see what comes after!

Thank you for doing this bounty thing. It’s so exciting to see a community driven Marvel vs Capcom being born. The latest Captain Commando from CaliKingz is so exciting. I can’t wait to see where this all goes in time.

This is a big get, the technical issues with character selection is solved redesigning character selection can now be an option.

A major modding breakthrough to be sure, I agree that an Animation Importer as the next goal would be ideal, the sheer creativity and options that would open up for the modding community would be excellent, to say the least.
I heard about this during the modded torny last week. I was not aware it was so close. This is huge. All the characters that were cut, all the ones we wanted. It's all possible now...

Serious props to Genesis. I hope they enjoy a well deserved break after all this work. After this I hope the next breakthrough is someone figuring out how to do custom animations for modded characters.
The thing i love about this is that modders used a +10 year old, fan favorite platform and still found a way to improve the functionality to a point that was considered nearly impossible. It's stunning, nostalgic, and I love playing this game again.
My only fear is now if the devs sees this and say, "well we can't beat that and there's no point if the players will prefer playing modded umvc3 over buying a new game, so we are axing production on any future mvc titles." 😢
GG max, you helped move this game into the next level.
I may not play fighting games stuff, but i love seeing the community take care of itself and the modders that push the game to the next level.

@Maximillian, Imo it looks like you have two approaches: 1. You create an entirely new UI and add the character slots you need that way. 2. Or you create a go to next page option for the modded characters, just use the page flip animation and add a new page.
That second idea is kinda cool!!
You would still need a new UI though, because there are two players. So maybe condensing it to each players side and have pages? Realized the design flaw later after thinking more about it.
Maybe when someone works on the character screen it self, would be cool that the original characters be on the "front" page of the book and the modded ones on any other pages, using a with a button the change pages
this opens the door to umvc 3 being the best mugen-style game ever now.
Im no expert but im guessing its super close to just making a new character select screen with the positions of the new characters displayable, although this is about 99% all that matters, I'm ok with modded characters having to be secretly inputted, it's very charming and old school.

They gotta keep making characters as much as mugen. Cause this is the best fighting game to me. The art and color depth fighting style the pixilation everything way ahead of its time especially how mvc 4 came out lol.
They literally could port models in from other games
I don't know, I much prefer mvc2 personally, never like the dark outlines around the characters of umvc3
I totally get the MUGEN comparison but I think it's important to understand that UMVC3 and MUGEN are two VERY different things. MUGEN is not a game, it's a fighting game engine. People aren't modding MUGEN. UMVC3 is a game, and more importantly, there's a much more solid idea of how it plays. Modders are working within a confined structure to make characters that fit with the UMVC3 style. That's not a thing with MUGEN. Most characters people make for MUGEN are ports from other fighting games that were rebuilt using tools like FighterMaker that help streamline the process.

Yeah except that could mess with the other player if you were playing locally. Besides, the current setup is reminiscent of MvC1 and MSH vs SF where hidden characters were selectable off roster.
i'm glad the Modder found a way to add new character with replacing them as a Standalone functioning Characters for UMVC3's MT Framework Engine! now i can play Arcade in peace! heck we might get custom intros and custom endings Let's Go!
Custom endings are possible but not Custom intros yet.

I mean, Max is right. This is a win for sure and no doubt a first in the world of modding where a niche notable internet personality openly spent a fair amount of money to get a very particular thing done but, in the scope of what makes a game it's very minute. Having done a small amount of game development work in art school these kinds of menu based issues involving assets working with selectable parts of menus as just a function in the game isn't exactly cutting edge given it's mostly finagling code and having the assets to plug in but, the thing that makes this interesting is that it's basically one giant work around for porting in characters that fit a programmed mold that didn't break the game at all and seemingly will allow for more work to be done in the future which is a rare animal in the world of modding given so much of it stays safe and cosmetic for most games. In the world of normies who pay attention to video games it simply sounds like a bunch of nerdy inside baseball which it is but, it's definitely an interesting turn of events especially for the fact Capcom hasn't done anything to stop it...yet.

@@TheTrueProdigy101 I suppose anyone interested in what this represents but also for those starry eyed people thinking this represented some mod in-road to bring MvC3 into some new direction it probably won't achieve. I was also mostly agreeing but also bringing up something that Max brought up before he made the bounty for this game mod a couple times.
Capcom doesn't seem to mind but, game developers and publishers might eventually take offense at this kind of thing if too much work is done such as it is. It sounds promising but, it can go too far eventually even if it's kinda cool, technically.
It usually has stuff to do with legality issues for the IPs involved especially if this ever tries to get used in a tournament setting. Nintendo went hard in the paint to completely box out the Project M mod and it fed into the overall Nintendo attitude of just not wanting to allow Melee tournaments altogether. It's a slippery slope and should be kept in mind to keep the expectations low just in case development stops for some reason.
I don’t know if the software has limits (unless it’s on an emulator) but if there’re zero memory restraints, this could be the next generation of mugen. I hope Rugal Bernstein is added to the modded roster!!

I think one thing that is not really mentioned is the reason the bounty may have been needed. It's not just a "people will do things for money", it's basically that it is a LOT of work. Gnesis probably put a lot of other stuff aside to work on this. If dude is a freelancer, this could as well be his paycheck.
I'm pretty sure there are people willing to do this kind of stuff for free for the games they like, but being willing and being able to are two different things, let alone finding someone with the necessary skills, and Max here was the key to make someone do the jump between the two. Huge props for both him and Gnesis for the mod work.
Give it about a week or so for Max to come out with another video for the most recent mod trailer.
When I saw the tweet, I was confused about what it was doing, but this and a reply to my reply on that tweet made sense and glad to see this now in UMvC3.

The thing is, if we are going to expand the roster further, having a segregation of Capcom vs Marvel would be a relic; possibly a new UI would have a separate section specifically for modded characters.

What a time to be into fighting games
I suppose I may have over-estimated what constituted as breaking this bounty. I thought it would've been "hey here's more slots" but Max taught me we're a long way from just plain *adding* the slots to a character select screen. What we really needed was for assets to not conflict from existing characters, and now that that hurdle has been broken, UMVC3 is now on its way to actually having a MUGEN screen of its own.
And honestly, I never thought about something like that, that existing assets could outright conflict with added content to the point you used to have to replace them and there was no getting around it. But now that base characters and mods can coexist, the floodgates have opened.

The Naruto storm community figured this out a few years ago also, because the character select screen is multiple pages, that you have to flick through to find your character, the modders would just add in more of those pages with the same amount of character slots for new and different characters, I never really thought about it untill now, thinking it was an easy thing to do, but after watching this video, it makes me appreciate the modding community that much more than I already do ❤

unrelated to THIS mod, one mod i still hope somebody does is for Vergil's DLC costume.
the costume comes from one of his costumes in DMC3SE and when he goes devil trigger he turns in to Nelo Angelo.
in UMVC3 he just also turns in to Sparda like Dante always has for his special costume.
These mods are impressive. I like to think of this of secret character's (our dream characters that we wanted in the character select)
It would be awesome if it was just a page turn for more characters with new icons. Bonus would be if the new characters had unique character select panels but that’s a lot 😅
