........Back in the day, I had the NES FF I. Me and my brother were malding at the lack of monk gear. Then I had the idea that maybe they weren't meant to use weapons. Monks are awesome, their fists out damage excaliber.
I played with 3 black belts and 1 white wizard all to level 99 before finishing. Chaos battle: preemptive strike, 16 critical hits, 2200 damage, dead chaos. 😂
Ive been on an FF kick lately. Needed something to play in the background on the drive to drop the kids off at school, and then to work. I've always loved doing and watching challenge FF1 runs, and have been watching more challenge runs on UA-cam. Great video, great commentary!
This should be one of the easier challenge runs. Monks are the most powerful melee party members, and they require very little equipment after the first town.
The money you save on equipment will be spent on items to keep your monks healthy and healed. Although, I can't recall if the Pixel Remaster fixes the monk's class upgrade issue from the original version.
One thing that would make this challenge easier is to make use of the Giants Gloves. Found in the Sea Shrine, using the Giants Gloves in battle casts Saber on the user, giving you a +16 Attack and +10 Accuracy. It makes the fiend battles, WarMech, and Chaos significantly easier.
Unless its changed in the pixel-master versions you can stack the spell effects to massively improve your defenses (protera and invisira) and offenses (giant gloves for Saber) which is kind of required in the later soul of chaos dungeons in those versions of the game otherwise you really don't stand a chance against the later optional bosses
I tend to break sequence once I deal with the nitro powder. Older versions you could skip lich and go straight to crescent for the canoe. I would go grab the ice cavern and airship but I would use the ship + canoe to approach the citadel of trials as you can pop off the ship into the nearby river via canoe to start much closer on the land route to the citadel than the area you have to land on via airship. Its certainly more dangerous going out of order, but bringing the might of a class changed squad on the earlier fiends is hilarious
I just did this hahaha. I didn't skip the Lich though, I didn't know you could. I went straight for the canoe, airship, then rats tail now I'm ready for it gulg 😂

Came across this via FF rabbit hole. Became a fan when a friend loaned this to me in '90 along with the first Nobunaga's Ambition and a few months later, the original Metal Gear when I first moved into my first place away from home. Have dabbled with MG but became a lifelong fan of the first two since that day. Nintendo Power and a couple other mags were our only real source of info a couple, three years later when SNES and Sega had begun their Holy War and first saw the 4 White mage challenge in the back of an issue of that. I guess I peaked by the time I was 25 because my bud and I ended up a free lifetime subscription to NintPower because we kept sending them our discoveries and tips. In hindsight, he was more into it because when I moved out of our house and into a place with my girl, I let him have the mags lol
Hello and thank you for spending some of your time here and with a great comment! With liking Nobunaga's Ambition, do you like the Dynasty Warriors series at all? I love the DW series! I remember my dad had a subscription to Electronic Gaming Monthly (1993) which i completely forgot about, i need to see if he still has those.
@@azuremistkingdom Yeah. Am actually playing Romance Of The Three Kingdoms XIII (Dynasty Warriors being the hack and slash version) as we speak. I pulled this off way back on original NES. You don't need any gear at all, so all money can just go towards healing items. Their defense raises with level and you already know how utterly amazing unarrmed attacks get. It's actually a super easy playthrough.
I've done this. Specifically I've done this in the Origins version which has enemy and stat balance that's almost 1:1 with the NES version (the lack of an inventory limit and some buff spells being fixed makes it marginally easier, but bosses have more HP to compensate.) I did not have fun.
Greetings! I came across your video because I've been on a final fantasy kick, because of the Final Fantasy Renaissance game I've been watching a lot of the first game plays, and I'm guessing your game just got shoved into the algorithm. It was fun!
@@azuremistkingdom well, I'll subscribe and look forward to when you hit it. I've run through all classes and put together a optimal four characters without overlap so you can get the full enjoyable experience without having end of the game regret in a sense. The Time Mage is by far the most fun to play with because you can totally destroy the sequence... Your key inventory list can look something like...... Lute/Floater/crown/Tail/Rod/cube/slab/chime/adamant/key... Just as an example. And if you play the new game plus, you could skip the tail all together until the very end and if you do, you can skip the crown to the very end. New Game Plus allows you to start the game with all promotions, along with the fact that all enemies have quadruple hit points, double experience. They might hit harder too... lol It was a real blast!
Use items during chaos fight helps alot. White shirt, power gl., defense sw., caravan options possibly? Another choice is to stone the master without a ribbon, put him in 1st slot, weather the storm (buffing until first car4) and attack with 3 other members.
For me War mech for it was about 4 hours glad was able stay top up with aid Healing staff and healing helm as item for heal spell so can save all precious spell slots for boss fights.
About that even with 1 Red Black White Wizard + 1 Knight at lv 50 I could hit lv 99 after 4 to 5 hours and NOT encounter it even once but Healing Staff/Helms are useless for any non mage users and War mech will easily OUT damage the use of those items when 4x Thieves use them BUT the Ninjas may possibly not even restore 30 to 40 HP using the Healing Staff/Helms either.
Was this your first time playing FF1? It’s well-known that you can skip most of the walk to the Citadel of Trials by sailing up to the nearby river; as the game allows you to go straight from the ship to the canoe. Also wish that you had played the Dawn of Souls version for the extra dungeons and extra bosses, even if I’m not sure if they’re even possible. There’s also the fact that many pieces of equipment can be used as items infinitely. The most useful for this playthrough would have been the Giant’s Gloves, which cast the Saber spell on the user (large boost to attack and hit rate).
found this video as i've been searching for videos by those playing the Final Fantasy Renaissance version that's come out recently. I once tried to do a personal challenge of seeing which set of four could beat the original game the quickest. with the original six classes done by many, wondering if and when anyone would try with the new 10 the FFR game offers. but this was neat, going back to see how the four monks fare.

It is hysterical that Doomtrain keeps going down at the end. I'm not sure if it's the same in the re-master, but in the original, the party position determines the likelihood of being targeted. Slot 1 = 50% chance, Slot 2 = 25% chance, Slot 3 & 4 = 12.5% chance. Doomtrain, in slot 4, should be the least targeted. I also bet you'd love the original Chaos' Max HP, which was only 2,000.

Edit: Lol no, I noticed the party order was switched with Doomtrain at the top for the final boss and he still ended up getting messed up, lol. Maybe the game really does just hate that character.
Not 100% sure on this version of the game but if you equip armor and weapons on your monk it weakens them. With no gear their def equals their stamina. Also their damage is better too.
"Mount Duergar" ("d-where-gar") That is one of several holdovers from their original beta tests that tells you FF1 was meant to be a DnD game. They even had a Beholder in the Famicom original (replaced with EvilEye in America so they didn't get sued)
"Some of you may remember Matoya from Final Fantasy 14 as Master Matoya". I remembered Matoya from Final Fantasy 1 when that part of FF 14 was released! Loved hearing the updated Matoya's cave score.
Wait - are any of the caves linear? ;) Great video, I just finished Ff1 for the first time ever (have no clue about story or gameplay so very exciting) and was instantly curious for single class playthroughs and monk was the one I was most keen. Moving onto ff2 now. Once again great video!
There are people doing solo thief runs on the NES version. 4 monks/black belts is EZ mode. They get to a point they just shred anything. With no gear equipped you can keep all the items that cast spells later on.
Just for the battle, and they are stackable uo to 10 times if I recall. Didn't know that at the time, though. Don't think it would of been beneficial anyways with this type of run
I’ve been working on a minimum battle/minimum level challenge with various party combinations, but I have to say that 4 monks is by far the hardest. I’ve been trying on and off for months, but I keep hitting two particular bottlenecks: Piscodemons and Lich. I can reach Piscodemons as low as level 4 iirc, but no matter what I do I cannot break through. Finally leveled up and challenged again, and finally managed to win around level 8 or 9. Now I’m at Lich, and it’s just as awful. He’s got about a 10% chance of casting Thundara or Blizzara every turn, and even up to level 15 I’ve been unable to win. Gonna keep trying in level increments until I get it, but this is so much more clunky than other party configs…
@@azuremistkingdom Slow certainly doesn’t help, but how do you mitigate the damage from AoE spells with only access to Hi-potions at this point? I feel like the only way to get past this wall is to level up and try again until I finally get past…
I love and hate final fantasy 1 I played it when I did not even know how to read and I somehow beat 3 of the 4 fiends tiamat was the only thing stopping me from beating that game I even somehow got to level 99 with max hp on all my characters abusing the extra dungeons the gba remake added
This reminds me of an event I did on final fantasy xi We had a mission to fight arc Angels. Tough shit. We brought in an 18 man alliance during lvl75 cap. 15 monks, 3 white mages (for cure bombing) 15 monks > hundred fists = absolute slug fest. We won lol
@@VinlandicSoul I was so young at the time FF11 was released and didnt have a credit card for the monthly payment. Its one of the few mmorpgs ive never had the chance to play. I have heard amazing things about it.
Did this challenge run on the psp version some decade or so ago. I did not do 100% and i did not enjoy it... Edit: didnt you skip the superboss? Or was that psp exclusive?
was this your first time playing this game? not knowing the astos fight was coming up and thinkin the Lufenians are angels? other than that, very smooth and well done.
also did 4 monks it was easier than I thought. dungeons sucked since they don't have an exit spell though. doing 4 red mages now, and that one is not that fun.
I did this run a couple years ago, I think the only REAL issue I had was Lich, I went from doing too much damage to everything to almost no damage on Lich. 100% completion on Jul 30, 2021. Here's a vid of the final battle :D ua-cam.com/video/rqpdfoGBDYw/v-deo.htmlsi=dkkv1EkfgNeVbb8m
Thanks for watching! The lich was such a pain. The first fight was just how much damage can I do before he slows, lol. Garland was a level check for sure.
Not just lich but if the normal enemies late game go first they can easily kill BOTH a Monk and black belt even at lv 99 in like 1 to 2 turns while they ARE those Healing helms when the Monks use them even at lv 99 it would barely restore like 40 to 50 HP to the entire party and when the enemies do HIT even lv 99 Monks/Masters their still going to lose OVER 400+ HP by games end.
@@veghesther3204 Yup, on the Garland fight the first time I used a healing helm it restore 40-50 hp and i was like , "well this item isn't going to work" lol
Exactly having Monk/Masters use them for only 40 to 50 healing when Chaos and his physical hits at lv 99 still hit for like 500+ damage isn't going to cut it even Red Mages/Wizards can still get around 75 to 80 out of the Healing Helms too bad Chaos with 4x Red mages/wizards can still do 300+ damage from his full party spells.
The class change is optional -- and in fact by the 'technical' title of the video it's impossible to get all achievements, since Masters aren't Monks. That said, IMO this is a better challenge anyway. I actually did four Thieves/Ninjas for this game myself, only achievement I didn't get is the bestiary (and al achievements of course) as I was sick of waiting on Warmech (did find it once.....died because autobattled before I could prepare, whoops). I found this on Steam forums (same with the FF12 one) from the post you made.
I appreciate you taking the time to watch another video of mine and letting me know how you came across it, I appreciate it! I was thinking of doing Thief at first, but ultimately decided on monks.
3x Monk and 1x Red Mage is the strongest party in the game, though. This isn't really a challenge run...just stack consumables and you're basically playing Easy Mode.
@@azuremistkingdom yup- the difficulty is still there- you only have monks. if you wanna increase the difficulty even more, dont use items that gives you an effect (haste, temper, heal, saber, etc)
So the answer here is, no you cannot. In order to 100% the game, you have to class change, which turns your monks into black belts. So while you start with monks, you don't end with them. That matters when it comes to FF1 challenge runs.
@@johncameron1935 it’s also completely backwards logic. Black Belts are still Monks, even if Monks aren’t necessarily Black Belts. The character is the same regardless of class change.
Well, I would beg to differ. At the time you turn in the tail to Bahamut you are a monk, and immediately get the achievement before the screen finishes flashing the class change to Black Belt. I still get what you are trying to say though.
Pixel remaster? More like Pixel Demaster. Come on people, It's not hard to properly emulate an upscaled and filtered version of this game from the PS1, where it's more accurate to the original NES but looks better.
I really feel like the pixel remaster changed just enough small things to make it a game that new players can honestly enjoy. Being able to buy Ethers so cheaply makes literally any party viable, which is rad
Don't see why you couldn't beat the game with just monks, what you don't spend on gear and magic you spend on potions, that's all. I just don't know about the achieves. P.S. There's always 9 pirates.
Not using weapons? Okay, you just ruined it. Because of the way Blackbelts/Monks work, eventually they hit so often in one attack, that they do far more damage without weapons, than with weapons. Should have just gone with equip weapons.
@@azuremistkingdom yessss... I'll be peeping it out later, from the looks of it, pixel remaster is pretty decent. I played FF1 when it dropped in the 90s, holy jesus that bastard game was brutal, lol.

"Some of you may remember Matoya from Final Fantasy 14 as Master Matoya". I remembered Matoya from Final Fantasy 1 when that part of FF 14 was released! Loved hearing the updated Matoya's cave score.
I feel like the missing part of this runs is the gauntlet that give you saber for free for each of the monk (boosting them punches to the max)
Wait - are any of the caves linear? ;)
Great video, I just finished Ff1 for the first time ever (have no clue about story or gameplay so very exciting) and was instantly curious for single class playthroughs and monk was the one I was most keen. Moving onto ff2 now.
Once again great video!
You will probably enjoy my only black mages playthrough :)
Once you get the Canoe, go to the castle of trials then the ice cave before doing the volcano
Hey. Keep up the great work. Subbed
Thank you! I'm surprised how much traction FF1 is getting tbh.
That was interesting, thank you
I should be the one thanking you for spending your time in watching this, so thank you :)
You can beat the game with any party (yes, even 4 WM).
It takes time and grind, but it is doable.
Even 1 WM.
Also no, class change is not required to beat the game. But your party will just be a bit weaker in some aspects
Yeah found that out after beating it, I'll be sure to not ascend on my next run that I'm doing right now alongside ff13. Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Also Monk isn't particularly different after class change as opposed to before it.
Wait.. How could the wind possibly disappear if the sea becomes violent..
Video game things!
I did a challenge run once using four Red Mages.
I was actually considering this over the monks, but then I remembered how good red mages are :)
@@azuremist13377 even better when they get promoted to Red Wizard
4x Red Mages/Wizards are WAY easier then 4x Monks/Masters the only hard part is spending hours getting all the GOOD spells for 4x Red mages.
@RedWizard0 currently doing that run on the psp, the goal is to make the most op team possible
@@toxickandy9669 Hell yeah
I like your story telling, despite FF1 not being a great challenge run game thanks to bosses being such pushovers.
My next FF1 video will be up tomorrow, it was not easy :)
There are people doing solo thief runs on the NES version. 4 monks/black belts is EZ mode. They get to a point they just shred anything. With no gear equipped you can keep all the items that cast spells later on.
NES =/= PR
@@azuremistkingdom Well yea, the general consensus is the NES version is harder.
wait wait wait pump the breaks do the drinks and tonics give perm stat ups or just for that battle?
Just for the battle, and they are stackable uo to 10 times if I recall. Didn't know that at the time, though. Don't think it would of been beneficial anyways with this type of run
blessed algorith randomly brought this video.
I watch random challenge runs of classic games, yt recomended your video
Nice hope you enjoy the videos!
How does the sea rage when the winds died? Nonstop earthquakes?
Video game things
Been there done that... doable as long you don't mind spending money on potions.
@@Sev_Henry lich was terrible because of slow :( 🐌 😒 😪
@@azuremistkingdom Slow certainly doesn’t help, but how do you mitigate the damage from AoE spells with only access to Hi-potions at this point? I feel like the only way to get past this wall is to level up and try again until I finally get past…
Great videos
Glad you like them, thank you for watching them :)
This is so unique. Why "jrpg" got so few challange runs compare to Pokemon?
Bracelets need to be equip until certain levels: (after which they will be less useful)
Copper 8
42 >10 *masamune*
Why wear armor? Did they change black belt defense?
Nope, I just forgot to unequipp it like a boss
I always thought that grinding the death eyeball in the ice cave was a great but boring way to level.
Poor Doomtrain. The game must just hate him. Pretty sure the odds of being attacked in slot 4 is, like, 12.5 percent?
Supposedly that's true, but given what you just witnessed; is why I don't believe that lol.
I love and hate final fantasy 1 I played it when I did not even know how to read and I somehow beat 3 of the 4 fiends tiamat was the only thing stopping me from beating that game I even somehow got to level 99 with max hp on all my characters abusing the extra dungeons the gba remake added
Thanks for watching :) My first experience with FF1 was also on the GBA like 20 years ago.
This reminds me of an event I did on final fantasy xi
We had a mission to fight arc Angels. Tough shit.
We brought in an 18 man alliance during lvl75 cap.
15 monks, 3 white mages (for cure bombing)
15 monks > hundred fists = absolute slug fest.
We won lol
@@VinlandicSoul I was so young at the time FF11 was released and didnt have a credit card for the monthly payment. Its one of the few mmorpgs ive never had the chance to play. I have heard amazing things about it.
Punctuation exists. Use it.
@@gregjones1339 how about no
You showed up on my feed
The algorithm brought me here from my recommended page. 😊
Thank you for the information, appreciate you being here!
Did this challenge run on the psp version some decade or so ago.
I did not do 100% and i did not enjoy it...
Edit: didnt you skip the superboss? Or was that psp exclusive?
Super boss's for ff1 appear in the dawn of souls edition and the 20th anniversary edition.
Love the video but i hate my brain because you said Mount D so many jokes popped in my head.
It was subtle :)
was this your first time playing this game? not knowing the astos fight was coming up and thinkin the Lufenians are angels? other than that, very smooth and well done.
2nd Time on PR, didnt remember any of it since release.
Merci c'était très intéressant 😊
oh yes you can I did that last year and it was amazing I killed Choas in 10 rounds lol
U don't know... not having 4 ribbons is why doom train dies. 25:30
also monks don't use armor but you can if you want to lose evasion
I actually did this, but I guess it won't count because I upgraded them and it was also on the Nintendo Switch
also did 4 monks it was easier than I thought. dungeons sucked since they don't have an exit spell though. doing 4 red mages now, and that one is not that fun.
red op op :)
can you beat it using only white magic
I did this run a couple years ago, I think the only REAL issue I had was Lich, I went from doing too much damage to everything to almost no damage on Lich. 100% completion on Jul 30, 2021. Here's a vid of the final battle :D
ua-cam.com/video/rqpdfoGBDYw/v-deo.htmlsi=dkkv1EkfgNeVbb8m
Well the advantage of using monks is that you won’t be spending a lot of money on equipment and magic
Very cool
Ty bud :)
Thanks for make
The class change is optional -- and in fact by the 'technical' title of the video it's impossible to get all achievements, since Masters aren't Monks.
You should reduce the volume of the background music. Making it so loud makes it hard to hear what you're saying
you should unequip your monks of everything immediately.
@@matthewbarabas3052 and make it easier? :)
@@azuremistkingdom yup- the difficulty is still there- you only have monks. if you wanna increase the difficulty even more, dont use items that gives you an effect (haste, temper, heal, saber, etc)
I dont have the pixel remaster so i dont know the cheevos but all 4 monks is easy mode to just beat the game😂
In OG FF 1 a monk could 1 shot Chaos.
You say you spend “a lot of time leveling” before Chaos and then you enter the battle at the same levels you were for Tiamat
Something fishy
They are the only class that gets weaker when they have the upgrade.
I recommend not always speeding up the video. Have some slow footage to let the viewers eyes rest.
Understood :) I try to do that for some major boss fights.
Can you? Yes. Should you? Haha, no.
So the answer here is, no you cannot. In order to 100% the game, you have to class change, which turns your monks into black belts. So while you start with monks, you don't end with them. That matters when it comes to FF1 challenge runs.
By that logic, it’s impossible to 100% the game with any combination of characters.
@@54raynor with any combination of base class characters, yes. That's why mono-class runs are generally not also 100% runs, bahamut's cave is skipped.
4 black belts is the ONLY way to go, every other team sux
@LIONTAMER3D have you seen my black mages video? It's my fave
@azuremistkingdom it's more stylish lol. Damage-wise? There's no comparison.
Hate to be nitpicky, but if you upgrade to master you're not technically beating the game with ONLY monks lmao. Good run regardless
Pixel remaster? More like Pixel Demaster. Come on people, It's not hard to properly emulate an upscaled and filtered version of this game from the PS1, where it's more accurate to the original NES but looks better.
Unga bunga
But you beat the game with masters
I really feel like the pixel remaster changed just enough small things to make it a game that new players can honestly enjoy. Being able to buy Ethers so cheaply makes literally any party viable, which is rad
Don't see why you couldn't beat the game with just monks, what you don't spend on gear and magic you spend on potions, that's all.
I just don't know about the achieves.
P.S. There's always 9 pirates.
What is this blasphemy? The four hero’s held orbs, not crystals!
they really nerfed this version. try this on the original.
is Tiamat a he or a she? There's another youtuber playing through FFI that says Tiamat is female.
Not using weapons? Okay, you just ruined it. Because of the way Blackbelts/Monks work, eventually they hit so often in one attack, that they do far more damage without weapons, than with weapons.
Should have just gone with equip weapons.
I just fond your vid thanks to a watching some dude with the thickest Italian accent you've ever heard suffering through a black mage only run.
I have my own black mage run too :)
@@azuremistkingdom yessss... I'll be peeping it out later, from the looks of it, pixel remaster is pretty decent. I played FF1 when it dropped in the 90s, holy jesus that bastard game was brutal, lol.
