I actually went to Costa Del Sol this year and it was really interesting comparing it to the lo-fi interpretation in the game world (FFVII's researchers had a pleasant job!). It made me think that what only spans a few screens here is actually a stand-in for a sprawling area of several miles, which helped me to appreciate the intended scale of FFVI's world - gamers from this era were expected to use their imagination and fill in the gaps. Final Fantasy VII is a window into the technology, philosophies and gameplay conventions of the 1990s. A game like this could likely never be made today. Audience expectations and the state of the industry have changed - its turn-based combat, blocky graphics, midi soundtrack and ambitious jumble of themes and moods would now be seen as hopelessly outdated 1997 was a hell of a year (perhaps the cultural highlight of the 20th century), and this game was _the_ masterpiece in the emerging realm of video games. Great art doesn't age. I truly think people will still be appreciating it in another 25 years.
I could see something like this made today, ...but as a small-budget indie retro/throwback project. Kind of like how fans of the original Paper Mario & The Thousand-Year Door made Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling, and fans of Earthbound made Undertale & Deltarune. Obviously there would probably be some quality of life improvements, higher fidelity audiovisuals (but with optional MIDI/pixelation modes), and the story would take some modern trends into account, while probably giving some meta humor/commentary on the PS1 era. Midgar has a strange coziness about it, everything fits so well together; i could live in Aerith’s tiny little world of light amidst the darkness. The inns or rest spots are pretty cool too, even if sometimes it’s just some wood covered with a blanket.
Has a community vibe to it, given how all the houses are so close together, but because the top plate towering above the slums give of a "closed lid" vibe, and this makes it feel like the entire city of Midgar is the whole world to the slum residence.

I love how videos of this game are still being made today, and will continue for a very long time. Yes i know its a popular game and the second remake came out this year, but I played the original as a child in the late 90s, so I could have never imagined this now. Great video!

Great video! The map distribution of FFVII, the way the different social classes are distributed and how it all revolves around Shinra’s reactors is so fascinating to me, truly incredible world building and environmental storytelling.
I've only played the Remake, Crisis Core, and Rebirth, but god, the music in FF7 game and the OG is 天. If I played this as a kid, I think I'd cry everytime I hear any song from the soundtrack.
I rented it in 1997 as a 10 year old from my local video rental store based on the cover having a guy with a big sword. I had never played an rpg before. Bone village was missing
@@Ferelmakina I ended up cutting out bone village because it wasn’t much of an operational RPG village… it’s more like a mini game for the lunar harp
Thats my biggest gripe with FF7 Remake Part 3. There is not much to do in the game anymore. The OG game ends pretty much afrer Clouds mental breakdown and the lifestream rehabilitation with Tifa. So they will milk the shit out of Wutai amd the Weapons, I presume.
@@Cenkolino it’s very possible part 3 will resemble the original game least of any remake installment
2:40 food poisoning? XD rly? .. i don think so.. this is one of the sephirot-clones.
