    Absolutely box truck. I'm nearly done with my house for 12 years to start on my full-time mobile adventure in Australia. Those "little" 3tonne move-yourself/delivery type box trucks are brilliant, heaps of space to build in, drive on a car license, easy to park, readily available, easy spare parts, easy to build in, lots of advantages imho. Really looking forward to it. Dad is also a lifelong mechanic so that helps! (I'm also 40)

  • @itzanopinion

    For me, I'd go w/the Box Truck! At 6'5", I need as much 'head-room' as possible to be 'comfy'.. 🙂
    The only thing I would do different is instead of using wood supports, I'd go the route of "Humble Road" and use 80/20 aluminum profile! Would definitely increase the cost of labor, but the overall savings in weight means I could carry more water (Fresh, Black, Gray)...
    I'd also have solar on the roof...as much as I could fit, as well as Big Battery...just the right size to ensure I could run all the necessities!

    • @bobsnabby2298
      @bobsnabby2298 Рік тому +1

      I'd say wood isn't that heavy if you use it smart. He made his cabinet doors with full plywood, his table top looks thick and chunky. So saving weight with Alu is foolish when you waste it elsewhere. Only solution is to use foam composite paneling for doors and still you could use wood structures. Overall savings in money and weight.

      So I have a mechanic who is actually my buddy and helped me through homelessness. I bought a running GMC Savana 02 for $1600 when I was desperate for a place to live and could not secure anything, forcing me to live in my car with my cat. He had a huge that would easily fit 3 riding lawn mowers for $1400. He was trying to help because he saw the van was so small, and he gets vehicles at auctions to flip, but he has offered me some insane deals.
      The hardest pill to swallow is he offered a full size E350 box truck thats abnormally tall and long. It is about the height of a semi but this gives it just a massive amount of usable space. He came by one day I was building out my van strategically in his parking lot haha. He said he will sell this box truck for $3000, it runs but the roof was hit and has a leak. I saw rust under the passenger side but once I looked underneath and inside it was clearly just exterior damage. I could have a bunk area

      What's a box van and who makes them?

    • @GeorgeOu
      @GeorgeOu 2 роки тому +4

      @@lisanelson2044 Another great alternative is the compact boxtrucks like the Isuzu NPR with 16-foot box. Those are 8-foot wide and 7.6 foot tall from front to back and side to side! These have a massive internal volume that lets you have a proper shower that you can buy premade from HomeDepot. The square simplicity allows you to use off-the-shelf parts.
      You can cut out some hidden windows where the cover turns into an awning. So if you're in stealth mode you leave windows closed but if stealth isn't needed, you open up the windows.
      They're just as easy to park because the front is so compact and fit into a single parking space when you put the front tire against the curb.

    • @GeorgeOu

      @@DK-nh5nw The box concept is not new at all. This is why Motorhomes universally use that form factor and they are almost as nice at 1/4th the cost of Advanced RV.
      The main purpose of "vanlife" is stealth and being able to park anywhere overnight for many nights. This is where vans and box trucks or cutaway-cube vans shine. If you didn't need stealth, you can just buy a Class B Motorhome at the same price as a custom van without all the trouble and call it a day.

      Depends on how much you drive it. I've been hearing people say 10 to 14 mpg for the 16 foot box trucks and 18 to 19 mpg for a Promaster. That is only a 30% +/- difference in fuel usage. If you stay regional I would go box truck but if you're are a road warrior I would go van.

    This was great run down of two different approaches, and both are for different sets of criteria. For me it would depend on the forecasted total cost of 3 years of full time living in my vehicle of choice. I say 3 years cost because most people give up/quit Van Life in about 2 years, so if I can make it to 3 years then I'm more inclined to think that I've succeeded at Vanlife...if that makes sense. Based on what I've seen in many videos & current economic trends, I choose a slightly shorter van, Pro Master, in order to blend in easier in more places & for better MPG, as well as easier maintenance support.

  • @MellonVegan
    @MellonVegan 2 роки тому +4

    Nolan is spot on with his comment about individual answers and what you need. For a couple of reasons, full van life (even in a truck) would be too small for me. I'd love to have a tiny house some day but where I live, that just doesn't make sense (and getting a regular old house will end up costing you about the same, probably but without the building code hassle, which can take *years* to get approved). But these vans are interesting to me as an option for my relatively frequent travels. I travel to compete a lot and a van (while more expensive) would be a much more convenient option than flight, train ride and hotel stay. I could just stealthily park near where the comp is and have all my stuff with me at all times. So having the ability to park anywhere and do it stealthily is really important. Plus, I hear that even driving a large van is a pain on European streets. If the point is to go to very specific places, I need to be able to do so and preferably without drawing attention.
    I also don't need a large kitchen or much space to live in general aside from definitely wanting a shower/toilet solution on board and a very small hob and sink and a place to put my gaming rig. But I don't need to live there full time, I'd just need to be able to spend a week in it. The only crazy thing I'd be transporting would basically be a full strongman gym of sorts but that's more about weight than it is about space.

    It really would depend on where you are and what you do. I've been drawing up designs for a extended van conversion and find I have to compromise in storage/roomy feel. A box truck would enable you to build something that feels like a tiny house. Step van the same deal.
    Personally I'd prefer a box truck if I know I won't be travelling a lot. Otherwise a van would be better. In my situation with a couple of dogs I'd prefer the roomier feel of the box truck (on the condition I can put a lot of windows in and a curtain tarp to cover them up should I choose to stealth somewhere). A 40-60 rear door would be sweet to allow a patio and porch to be there as well. A lot more options with a box truck.

    As a female a van seems to be more stealthy, and as I too am from the Bronx, parking is a priority, so I go with the van 😊

    Wish you could have shown a little more about the dinette design. Is it just a standard design? Nolan made it sound like it's a little different? If it's somehow a super easy convert to bed design, would love to know. thx! Love the deep purple!!

    Box Truck, I wanted a shop on wheels and although I could achieve that with a van but I'd have to give up a lot more for it to balance out the weight so I wasn't willing to compromise.

    This is like the bed over the garage debate Vs the sofa bed. A smaller box fan for sure. Less points to break in, square and more stealth going.

    A box truck is more like a Class C rv so there’s more room than a van. More storage, tanks are larger, etc. It’s they said, you build it to fit your lifestyle.

    Vans: curves to deal with, less space, more compromises. Trucks: worse gas mileage, bit harder to find folks to work on it mechanically I would imagine, and more noticeable. I think it's 100% preference, can I have one of each? 🙂

    What about the 16-foot Cab Forward Boxtrucks with an overall length of 22 feet? Those should be just as easy as a van to park and you don't even need to back over the curb because the front can go several feet over the curb because the wheel is far back. They have an internal width of 8 feet from top to bottom and 7.5 feet height from front to back. These are also extremely stealthy because they just look like a delivery truck. Stealth windows/awnings could be used where permitted.

    For me, any city you can only get a van into, you can get a local train into and so just park your truck out from the city center. (Not sure if this works in the USA though; I hear it's very unsafe and not great PT?)

    Box Truck, Van or Mini Bus? That's the question for me. There's Pros and Cons for each. I'm leaning towards a Box Truck or Mini Bus at the moment because of a music studio setup I've seen. For the moment, it's a Box Truck for me because it's more stealthy than a mini bus.
