This is fascinating. My grandma was Panamanian but she never taught my mother and aunts and uncles how to speak Spanish (they were born and grew up in Jamaica). I'm grown now, and learned some Spanish in school. But wish I learned Panamanian Spanish. Better late, no?
The Panama Canal was built by workers from the West indies, like trinidad and Jamaica. Much of the workers settled in panama after the canal was built therefore contributing to the culture and ethnic makeup of modern day Panama
I'm so mad I didn't pursue Spanish when I was younger! I'm intimidated by it now and we are moving to Panama this year. My dad is Panamanian but I never got to grow up with their culture and language.
my mother's panamanian but she never spoke spanish around my siblings and i growing up. although i am making an effort to learn the language now in school, i still came to this video because i want to sound like a panamanian and not a spaniard when speaking spanish lol
Not to shabby. Your Dominican accent could still be heard when you spoke in your Panamanian tone. Good job. Your video was more representative of Panamanian Spanish spoken in the city. If your were to travel to Chiriqui its a extremely different tone. Panama 🇵🇦 is a very fascinating country. I love my country! A lot of the English we speak comes from 2 source, the North American and from the English speaking Afro Caribbean's who came to build the canal. Also, Panama was actually part of Colombia that's why we share a lot of our culture and language with them
Thanks for this fren soy de Panamá but i grew up in the United States of America and feel so isolated from my heritage. Still despacio y nesecito practicar pa hablo com mi familia aja en Facebook lol. Wish u could tell me more!
No. They still sound like this outside of this city. In las tablas too. Chiriqui too. Its a very small country. The accent doesnt diffete there as wildly as it does in colombia.
@@LilyUnicorn lol it seems like you have never been in Panamá, las tablas and the capital city have very different accents, just Panama city has like 3 types of accents... even foreigners that have lived here for a long time can tell the differences.
Ha! Panamanian Spanish sounds similar to Cuban Spanish to me! And there are a lot of Anglophone Caribbean Patois words there too due to their recent history!
Great video as always bro. Love the Panamanian accent. Not as much as the Venezuelan one though, but then again, my family is Venezuelan so I’m kind of biased 😂
yo como panameño estoy feliz de ver que nuestro acento es reconocido.y si tenemos cosas de jamaicas por la relacion que hubo en la epoca del canal y despues de eso. me encanta que nuestro acento entra en los acentos caribeños.
The explanation were excelent. It's 95% correct, however at the end you sounds like a dominican trying to speak like a panamanian. Btw I liked the video.
At the end you sounded more Dominican. Regarding the Snob accent, it actually sounds more like you have your mouth stuffed with a potato; reason why people in Panama have the saying "habla con la papa en la boca" about the preppy snob way of speaking
SOOO GOOD! U killed it! AMAZING I don't know about ur accent, but at the end it didn't sound like panamenian more like PR or DR, ur accent escaped a bit in ther . But the way u explained it was perfect!! Finally someone explains it thanks awebao!🤣 cha you tho
Let's not forget that the largest group of west indians to come to panama to build the canal were the bajans " barbados " the second largest were the jamaicans , and then the trinis, now in neigboring costa rica those west indians who settled there in the early 1900's are of strictly jamaican heritage.
My grandpa was raised living his whole childhood in Panama and when he was an adult decided to get American citizenship and was actually in Vietnam. He spent a lot of time alone before he died in 2014 i remember him speaking Spanish and yelling at me in Spanish when he was angry. He died without anyone speaking his native language. My mom doesn't know Spanish because he had my mom and her siblings taken from him. But i am going to learn and this is so helpful.
Their accent is like Spanish (PR,DR,Cuba,Caribe de Colombia) mix with Jamaican patois 😍. Ps what is this movie you’re watchin? Is it like an urban version of Netflix but in Spanish?
Oshane Carnegie das wussup. I only speak Spanish and a lil Brazilian Portuguese, I would love to learn to speak patwah but it seems hard as far as slang goes. Where do you live now?
Oshane Carnegie Of course you live in Florida 😍. I love Florida from Orlando all the way down. I live in southern Cali for now, originally from Philadelphia but I am planning to move back east to south Florida. I miss the tropical weather and REAL Caribbean food.
I thought about mentioning that here, but I decided to just mention it in the Panamanian slang video. Thanks for the insight thought!! Sometimes they do that in Dominican Spanish too! EX. Cualto (Cuarto [dinero]) can be tocual lol
#HoldIt I am Panamanian speaker. I try to use the "professional" tone in my daily life. As far I see, people around use to use the "professional" one. The most common words I use as the "shortened words": these are the most commonly used! There is two tones, you missed, but they are not commonly used: the Western (meto') and the Azuero (ojue')...
okay I came back home to korea after living about 3 years in panama and a spanish tutor said I speak in a weird way not pronouncing the 's'... and I shouldn't. Felt a bit sadge cuz she was speaking in a very passionate spanish spanish and that's no way close to my personality and my background.
I would like to know how do you find your information on the various specific accents? I plan to move to Panama and would like to find audio or conversations where I can hear it more. Some of them don’t even speak Spanish at all, or the majority that claim to be Panamanian. It’s probably why the Panamanian parade in Brooklyn has been changing or is fizzling out because Panama is being well represented during the Hispanic parade in the month of September in Manhattan. Some of those words are only spoken amongst certain people that live, particularly in the panama canal area, and sometimes imitated for fun by the youth. Panama, Venezuela, North of Colombia, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic we do speak a dialect of Spanish named Caribbean Spanish.
