    Thank you, I immediately ordered the watch and some goo gone (which is available even here in Germany) and it worked perfectly. Okay, at the beginning it felt like the damn letters would never dissolve, but when I played the Benny Hill theme I finally could rub them away!

    I wish casio made a real stainless steel case for this watch. I would pay 80 dollars for it.

    • @ipariszalonna
      @ipariszalonna 5 років тому +19

      It would probably cost around 2-400 dollars for a full ss watch. There aren’t many digital quartz watches out there with steel cases. The ones I know about are not cheap.

    • @antman5474

      Vintage is the way to go. Seiko did some nice ones plus their stainless steel is better quality than the other brands.

      Full stainless steel costs a lot as ipariszalonna was saying. A full metal Casio G-Shock GMW-B5000 is a beautiful watch, but it will set you back 5, 600 dollars.

    • @sped6954
      @sped6954 5 років тому +8

      Actually, full SS watches don't always cost that much. One of Casio's main competitors, Timex had one out a few years ago with a SS housing, and I only paid around $60 for it, which was a little under the $65 price tag that Timex put on it. You can still find it online, and if you do some hunting around you can pick one up for around $50, but I have seen it as high as $100. The model number was T-49828. It was an Expedition quartz analog with a leather band, and a digital subdial at 5,6 and 7 o'clock. It didn't do time zones or any of that other weird shit like DST, but they covered the basics with a digital chrono, timer, two alarms, hourly chime, month, day, date, year (year not displayed), and you could manually set a 2nd time zone. Theoretically, you could have three times on it because the digital and the analog weren't synchronized, so you could have your local time on the analog, a second time on the main digital, and a third on the second digital. The one thing that kind of annoyed me about it was that the seconds hand and the digital seconds aren't synchronized. The hours and minutes hands were luminescent, as were the 12 main indices. Naturally, being a Timex, it had the Indiglo backlighting. If Casio really wanted to, they could make this watch in SS, and sell it at an reasonable price. They could definitely keep it below $80.

    For anybody trying this mod, you MUST use Goo Gone on the inside plastic. Alcohol/nail polish remover works on the outside lettering, but it takes way too long on the inside, and because it takes so much work, it ends up leaving the spot shiny (Instead of textured) and looking out of place. Learned this the hard way.

    TO ALL WHO ARE NEW TO THIS VIDEO.
    Do NOT use acetone nail varnish remover to take off the text! The case is coated resin and acetone will damage it.
    Use non-acetone remover, isopropyl alcohol or Zippo lighter fluid. Remember to rinse off with clean water immediately (with a drop of washing up liquid to get rid of any flimy sheen left by the removal fluid), using a paper towel.

    A note of caution to anyone wanting to do this mod. Trying to remove the lettering on the outside of the case ended up ruining my watch I just received in the mail today. Maybe the printing of the lettering on the outside of the case has gotten better. The googone did not effectively remove all the lettering on mine, you could still see the shadowing left on the case, like a light silver or white color, where the letters were. You could still read/ see world time, and illuminator. . So in wanting it completely silver I kept going and then it started removing the paint off the case.

    • @iBendThings

  • @matthewkang
    @matthewkang 3 роки тому +31

    Beware: you can easily strip off the silver paint on the case if you rub too hard with the goo gone with q-tip, which is what I did when trying to take off the "World Time" portion. Now I have an unsightly half-inch scratch there on one of my favorite every day watches :(

  • @channel_3891
    @channel_3891 2 роки тому +1

    91% isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip works great for taking off the lettering on the outside of the case (the illuminator and world time text). I can't speak to removing the lettering from the interior. I removed the outer text from the silver (stainless band) version of the ae1200, and the 91% isopropyl did not damage or remove any of the silver finish from what I can tell. The process only took about 5 minutes. Cheers!

    I find the looks of the steel model to be super-iconic and I wouldn't change anything about it! If I'd have the money I would go to an experimented modder to make an identical case from more premium materials like platinum or titanium, and not just plaqued, but complete, and also sapphire window. A custom blue light with a bit more power would also be in order.

    Yesterday, I popped in to a Salvos store to have a look at the watches.
    I found an old automatic ladies Seiko, a fake Rado, a Daniel Wellington, and the lady let me have 'for free' - a Casio, Pro Trek PRG 110Y, triple sensor, tough solar watch! I'd never even heard of that model.

    Jody, when you got screws that need to go tight, always go in diagonal pattern, one corner then the opposite corner diagonally.Also dealing with gaskets, like in this case, tighten the screws to around 50% then go one turn on each one until all are thight.

    Here's another thing to review.
    I'm quite pleased with mine.
    Except for the wiggly chronic seconds hand which jumps a bit too far or not far enough several times in a minute, dependant on the orientation of the watch and gravity, but not only on that. Like all Timex watches I own.
    Plus the minute counter doesn't sit exactly on the 60 when reset.
    Aside that the design is just a pleasure to look at, and the band is very nice too.

    Cape Cod cloth removes the print from the black case really quickly. However, it shines the plastic a bit.

    I used acetone free nail polish remover worked like a charm. Trick is not to try and do it in one go, I did it a little bit at a time neutralizing with water. Trick is not to soften the silver paint and a little bit of patience.

    I used the Q-Tip and Goo Gone combo, and found that the "Illuminator" lettering came off just fine. For some reason, though, the "World Time" lettering didn't. The silver paint under and around it sure did come off, though. Ultimately, the risk may not outweigh the reward. I'm buying a new watch as a result, and I'll just leave it as-is next time.

    Entertaining video as usual! "will cost less than a tenner" hehe.. never heard that one. Cool little mod for this rather popular watch, maybe I should get a digi watch for old time sake, as a teen these LCD watches were quite a time piece revolution. A suggestion perhaps, next mod video it would be nice to see the before and after side by side, makes it easier to judge the improvements.

    Guys, very important - DO NOT RUSH THIS. Take it slow, and with patience. Also, try to avoid acetone based products. I was able to clear the "illuminator" text just fine, but the "world time" was disastrous. I not only stripped the silver paint, but actually made a cluster of merged craters in the case. I used an acetone based sticker glue remover. Obviously it's completely my fault, for being an idiot - not very proud of myself... I ordered a new one.
    Lesson learned: do not use acetone based products; go nice and slow; do not drench the surface in product; swipe the whole label 3-5times with product, wipe it with a dry cloth and then check.

    Jody! Will you please show us how to replace the crystal of the royale? I have that same casio royale steel, my wife gave it to me as a birthday present, I have that same watch for 5 years now, and it had some share of scratches all around the crystal, I want to retain/maintain this watch, as this is the most important watch that I own.
    Thank you so much!

      You don`t know how much this means to me, this watch is the same one that I wore when my boy was born, so even though this is cheap, this watch is my lucky watch, a part of me that I want to keep as long as I can. :)
