To me excessive, nerdy lettering is a hallmark of 80s' digital watches, just as flimsy bracelets, awkward operation and annoying beeps. I love my Royale exactly as it is. It makes me feel like a teenager again.
I know what you mean. This definitely changes the look of the watch era-wise
Agree with you! There will always be modders though.
I agree, the excessive lettering does have its charm, but at the price Royales go for, I modded one and kept one original.
When LCD first came out, the lettering was very sparce, they started having LED LCD combos and the LED typically had no markings on the high end watches, making this particular mod more retro than the 80's which I who am 56 actually prefer the 70's style digitals, LED OR LCD. Im building a casio A168 with a blank steel faceplate, no lettering at all, and putting in a green filter, with an all stainless steel casing and band. It going to look as basic and retro as they initially came back in the day.
Thank you for setting my expectation correctly. Had I gone into this mod believing it is easy, I would have already failed.
Well of course watch mods just comes down to personal taste.... But in my opinion, I think this "wordy" watch looked perfect just as it was originally made... I plan on adding this one to my collection...
Either way the watch itself is a winner. You’ll be glad you bought it!
I did the same; I don't mind the slight defects, to me it adds a nice wear/aging effect. I love the new look with the case lettering, 5 Alarms, and 10 Year Battery words removed!
Some more tips: use rubber gloves and store the module in a ziplock bag while you are busy so no fingerprints and dust will leave their marks. It is common practice in watch maintenance.
Thanks for the tips! I was just about to do this (on the outside lettering only) so I'm glad I watched this video first. Also, I must say that you sir have great taste in art! I love the Lauren Marx print in the background! She is one of my favorite artists along with Alex Grey. Cheers my friend!
Thanks for watching! I got to meet Lauren when I was living in St. Louis and bought that print from her
Good video, and nice mod. Thanks for sharing.
Just a tip, when removing the watch module from the case, try inserting your screwdriver at the 6 or 12 oclock positon of the module (theres a small notch to insert into in those 2 spots), and then pry up. Comes out really quick that way.
And when rubbing off the lettering, try using the side of the q-tip along with with very light pressure. The side of the q-tip is less pointed, and wont rub off the paint as easily.
Looking forward to your next mod
Thank you and thanks for the tips!
A pencil eraser takes all the writing off.
I cut and removed the horizontal bar above the day/date. Was hard to see when there was a shadow from it.
Was going to remove the upper bar but figured it was better to stop before it went awry. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
Awesome video, I did this method of taking off the words to my black and medal casio watch. You're the best.
Definitely doing this with mine. Thanks for sharing!
Nice! Good luck!
nail polish remover worked perfect for me too , thanks for the advice
The screen without a plastic divider looks so cool!
My Royale arrived yesterday. It’s black, and the silly letters outside are printed with a white a bit faded, not too bright, so I decided to cancel the GooGone order.
I read that you should have wait the GooGone chemical sit for a few minutes, and later rubber ( with an adequate plastic tool, not cotton… cotton was nice to a final clean with soap )
My watch shows pm when it’s am… and I didn’t figure out how to fix it, I’m in NYC.
My next Casio will be a wave receptor :P
The cheap model with lunar phases and random fishes popping up on the screen looks also cool and fun lol
91% isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip works great for taking off the lettering on the outside of the case (the illuminator and world time text). I can't speak to removing the lettering from the interior. I removed the outer text from the silver (stainless band) version of the ae1200, and the 91% isopropyl did not damage or remove any of the silver finish from what I can tell. The process only took about 5 minutes. Cheers!
Thanks for the tip!
Great tip and so, so much easier. Cheers!
I did almost the exact same thing with the exact same watch! My first and so far, last modding project. 😃
Keep up the good work my friend!
Just got a bronze case for my all black version, I'll probably swap it on Friday, glad I watched this video, thanks!
Glad I could help. Bronze case sounds awesome, let me know how it turns out!
@@the1010watchclub Will do, I'll try to post to Instagram too.
Thanks for the video and tips as I'm about to try this mod. And dude, I hope you have invested in some tweezers by now. Maybe watch a few watchmakers at work and you will get some nice tips on proper ways to disassemble and reassemble watches for modding, regulating and battery changing. I was dieing watching you struggle with the screws lol. Anyways, it was helpful and entertaining, got my sub.
Thanks for the tips. I probably would have taken off the WR100M and left the button labels. Seems a bit more utilitarian and balanced with the CASIO label - in my mind at least. Cheers.
Dude awesome review. Thanks so much for posting.
Thank you!
I used acetone like an idiot for text removal on the divider, the melted plastic shines like a christmas tree in the light. I was upset until I realized if Tom Sachs had done it like that he could sell it as art for thousands. It's definitely mine now.
I used a dremel to polish mine. That bare plastic patch is so shiny!
You did exactly the same thing as Jody on Just One More Watch, who used Goo Gone, and there appeared to be a scratch in virtually exactly the same place. Well done. Now I have to try it......
Haha does that mean the only way to do it successfully is to leave a blemish?
Very good. I know it wasn't your purpose, but it helped me check if what I bought was fake or real!
Great video...thank you. Btw, along with learning you also made me crack up 😂
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your work in your watch dude.
Thank you!
great mod, with an honest narration ahahaha, thank you for sharing this :)
Glad you enjoyed it thanks for watching!
Bang buat video cara ngilangin tulisan2 djam casio kayak dvideo ini, biar gk kliatan rame dngan tulisan2
Thanks. That was fun.
Good channel. Keep up the good work.
thank you!
Your watch of course you get to do what makes you happy, but I think the charm of that watches is all of the 80s kitch
I brushed my bracelet with a scotch pad (with the grain) and it matches the painted case better.
nice idea!
jewelry buffer stick would do that in a second. get the green and white ones, on the metal parts
Nice! Learning a lot of new methods in the comment section
Mines done too. Left the small writing at the sides and added a yellow filter. Looks great.
Nice!
Wish we could post photos in the comments. Would like to see your watch now.
I have just done it and i am very happy. No more busy lettering that being honest I struggled to read anyways.
Nice!
Just ordered this watch yesterday, will be following your video for sure once it shows up. You need to invest in some nice Wiha screwdrivers and throw those other ones in the back of your tool box.
Thanks for watching! Yeah those screwdrivers were almost the death of me.
I got lucky using the goo gone and didn't scratch the case or damage the paint on the face plate. I took a deep breath and worked on it slowly on a lap top table while watching tv. I put it on a 24mm leather Panerai replacement strap from Amazon and just snipped the ends a little to fit and used a soldering iron on the strap for a clean fit with no frays.
Nice! Way to go
It looks clean but I would rather leave mine alone
I agree although using an eraser can get off a few words to clean it up.
good tips! i'm thinking of getting a black casino royale and modding it too. the proliferation of strap adapters for this watch these days make it also easier to switch straps on it so that's a plus.
i'm wondering though is if the isopropyl alcohol would damage the black surface of the watch if that's what i use to erase the texts.
I wonder too… as long as the plastic casing is black and not just painted black it should be ok. Just don’t use acetone
I Agree...I bought mine just to mod. Erased text on the outside and inside just left Casio and the button functions. VERY clean also! Updated today, taking the discarded rubber strap from my Duro, cut it to lug size (20to18), and tapers perfectly with the Royale! metal and rubber combo makes it sportier and its not available yet from Casio.
What did you use to erase?
I wouldn't worry about rubbing off the silver paint as well before the 10 year battery gives up the silver paint on the watch body will long ago have rubbed away in places just with daily use.
Looks awesome
Thank you!
I use turtle wax rubbing compound, I dont have to rub all that hard, just enough power to rub the wordings out. As for the dial plate, I have to rub all the surfaces as close as I could to the words I wanted to clean because rubbing compound rubs the matt plastic into a shine, and if I just do patches of wordings, there will be annoying patches of polished plastic on matt plastic. Last, I bought a $10 black metal bracelet skmei 1382 to salvage the bracelet for my black ae1200
Great video, watch looks awesome
Thank you!
@@the1010watchclub As a follow up I received my Casio world timer last week & have paired it with a black leather Vario band. I used your video as a tutorial & have moded mine exactly the same as yours. Thanks again for the instructions, wish I could post a photo, best wishes from Sydney Australia,

Looks great......👍
Thanks 👍
Gees it looks great! I’m holding for mine it supposed to be delivered today and I want to get rid of all the alphabet on the screen perhaps I’ll erase the same as you it looks terrific, I’m total amateur as well but I got to say god work and thanks for the advise lml
Thank you and good luck!
You know what also works to get that lettering off? An ordinary white plastic pencil eraser.
I’ll have to try that
Wow! That sounds much easier than using Goo. Thanks for the tip.
I just finished doing this. Use pegwood or a nail care stick and use the chiseled end. The paint part is higher than the case so you can use the flat edge of the chiseled end to rub. It will apply more pressure on the text and less on the case paint. You will remove some case paint but you can more easily blend the paint with the same chisel edge. I used 90% IA. It turned out perfectly.
Very interesting thank you
If you need more precise cotton buds take the cotton off and wrap it round a match stick tightly.
Nice! Thanks for the tip
i have this watch but with a rubber strap
i think the metal strap looks better,
do you know what size of metal strap that will fit for this watch ??
You have to let googone sit for 10 minutes.. the scratch came from you loosing your cool and put to much pressure hence taking the case paint scratch probably with the stick part of the q tip since you put some much pressure 🤷♂️
The goo gone method works great it just have to know how to do it and be patient
Which is better, the all black on resin or the silver on bracelet?
I like the look of the silver, I’m just worried I will hate the cheap bracelet.
Should be called desk gone
A couple things: Goo Gone may not be the safest option for removinbg the black print. A lot of rubbing is required and it's the excessve abrasion that will easily remove also too much of the silver finish on the case. I had good success using Eclipse sensor cleaner (for digital camera sensors). This product is ethanol and methanol-based with some isopropyl alcohol. The screws on the back are best loosened and tightened with a JIS and not with a Phillips screwdriver. Casio uses JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screws and a JIS driver will fit more snugly than Phillips with less chance of stripping the screw head. A JIS driver will by the way work perfectly on a Phillips screwhead. If you closely at the screws on the AE-1200 you will see that the scre heads are actually a hybrid between JIS and flathead. Obe slot is horizontal all the way across so you can also use a flathead scredriver. Support the tip of the scredriver with your fingertip so that you don't slip with the flathead scredriver and scratch the caseback.
Thanks for the tips!
Just use a pencil eraser.
@@dancarthen3634 Isn't that too abrasive on the display bezel and case finish? I did try an ultra fine polishing compound and it made the matte black finish on the bezel shiny.
Protip: don't remove the seal on the top of the Goo Gone bottle. Instead, use a needle to make a tiny hole. That way you can control how much comes out of it!
Solid tip!
Goo gone ate right through the finish on mine
I would have left in mode, search etc because I forget which buttons do what. But yeah, nice look.
Like someone else here in the comments, I'm having a hard time understanding why you've altered a clever design and fine aesthetics. I really don't understand it.
Got fed up with Goo Gone on the black plastic plate. Isopropyl alcohol and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser did the trick in no time
Magic eraser is a great idea
So dos rubbing alcohol work to remove the text on the case as well or do I need Goo Gone for those texts?
I ordered one with the plastic case. I ordered a leather and a 2 piece NATO watch strap for it. I would not modify my watch. I prefer to leave it as is. This is supposed to be a terrific watch for the price. It makes a nice knock around watch. If I break it it is low cost to replace. The battery should last ten years with normal use!
Ty man. I am having problem getting goo gone ahaa then u save me. Ty
You're welcome! So much easier this way
Use a magic rub eraser. 20 seconds, no mess.
I end up using a high polish compound that took off the letters within a few seconds cause I find goo gone to be too slow for me.
Nice!
Smart to start your modding hobby out on a $30 watch. BTW, did you eventually repurchase a new one to replace the scratched case? That's something I would do (a bit OCD about stuff like that). As for the mod, I actually like the verbose one better (and I'm normally a minimalist), but you didn't mod it for me anyway, so who cares what I think. Enjoyed the vid though. Made me laugh during my work break. Cheers
Thanks so much! I ended up just keeping it, I'm telling myself the scratch is added character
@@the1010watchclub It is a perfect chance to repaint it with a cool color, or a different silver. Lots of very good spraypaints (or model paints) that one could use.
I like that idea
do you guys know why it allways changes time randomly?
I have 2 versions: the silver with metal bracelet, and black with resin strap.
Don’t rub it! Paint it!
Never even thought of that!
@2:28 If you use acetone, it's easy and you don't need to rub hard. I have done this exact same mod.
I am getting the black and gold or bronze one. It's classic modern and suffocated looking.
Would a Dremel with the cleaning/buffing soft attachments dipped in ISO work on this? It would (or should) at least be a LOT faster. I just ordered my 1200 and was planning on doing the mod to remove text.
I don't own a Dremel but that sounds like a great idea, let me know how it works out!
Try it on a junk watch first. I've seen the black plastic that Casio uses, start to move under pressure from a Dremel at high speed. It can get very hot in a short time. I learned the hard way when I tried this on a vintage Casio I was trying to salvage.
There is no accounting for taste. Do what you like, as it's a 30.00 watch, but I love the text. It's what makes it look like a retro Casio watch from my youth. Without the writing, the black borders look too big in my opinion
Encontré uno color dorado metálico y quiero saber si existe el modelo metálico dorado , este video me va ayudar , mañana iré a verlo y quizá comprarlo
I used a pencil eraser and it took the case text off perfectly in 20 seconds. The case was perfect afterwards.
Ah, great idea and Goo Be Gone can be gone.
Just did the same yesterday. A brand new pencil eraser works the best. Light pressure and done in half a minute!
Wen you like depart rest off color rest of tape ect on else collor or plastic start with Aceton, when not funtion Terpenin wehn not function Nirto ,cleaner or agents.
pencil eraser - 5 - 10 minutes, all gone
From watching another video, you can buy Q-tips that are pointed like a sharpened pencil, which will help with your aim!
Nice!! Great idea
I love my Casio Royale just like as its be
Hi there, I also own one Casio Royal cause of world map( me as geography nurd help me my imagination )
Another is square shape and best in class bracelet and last but not list love and respect for Casio .I also thinking of removing some words after watching your video i clear my mind get it done from watch Craftsman. ☺️
Nice! It’s a great watch, good luck.
I did it...Easy mod👍
This is going to sound stupid but use some Polywatch on the scratch. You might be able to buff, and blend the mar with the surrounding paint.
I’m down to give it a shot
Can you use vinegar to remove lettering?
Interesting.. I don't know! I'll have to try it
I use 91% Isopropyl alcohol and a Q-Tip. Always works great with no problems.
also, why removing rubber???
At 2:41 in, you had it Perfect..👌..What possessed you to keep on rubbing, just Stop!!!..So frustrating!!! 😂😂😂
p.s. metal polish and cotton buds worked perfectly, done in 5mins...Just Stop immediately after lettering is gone or your gonna start taking the grey paint off as well.👍
Right?! I couldn’t help myself 😂 Thanks for the tip!
Like the watch video..new SUBSCRIBER!
Thank you! Welcome to the channel
People like to appear "perfect" or "with skills" but it takes time and effort which include mistakes, wasted money and destroyed items. I don't have much shaking and being nervous after doing a lot of it. A funny thing was watch parts flying off but that too is something to think about. In some computers I had stuck screws which I had to drill out and some screen part broke unexpectedly after a long assembly procedure. Still, there is a high "win ratio" around 80-90% of success. For example, you could have bought 10 and 1 bad is only 10% failure. After 100 it's maybe 1-5% of failure.
Glad to hear I’m not alone. And I’ve DEFINITELY had a few spring bars fly off never to be seen again...
I heared someone makes stainless body for casio ae1200 you should look for one of those. someone from UA-cam makes one of those.
nice!
Can i buy this watch from u?
I can see there are lots of videos modding the Casio Royale, but what about the AE-1400WH? Is that not as easy to mod?
I'm a complete noob btw.
Great question... so I just ordered one so we can find out! I'll have the video up in a week or two. And noobs welcome! I'm pretty new myself, just learning as I go.
Heads up- the mod video on the AE-1400WH is now live on the channel
Broooo this video was like watching my self doing it...i did exactly the same.... i scratched the case...i removed all the letters like you...than i decided to use sandpaper to remove the scratch but it removed everything :D so i decided to sanded all and spray it red...but i didnt cover the screen well...so i fu**ed up the screen , than after a lot of sanding... the result was horrible ...also i used lee fiters to color some of the watch...and now i have black Nato strap and amazingly bad red bezel with not very good to see screen :D
PS i lost one of the pins that hold the buttons...and i ordered from ali express and waited it for 2 months :D
So i bought a new casio royale and i leave it like it is :D
That was a rollercoaster! 😆
I think more will be thinking like you. Leave well enough alone.
My WORLD TIME and ILLUMINATOR now spells ME at the top and ILL at the bottom!
*A ROYALE WITH CHEESE* Vincent Vega.
For how long does light stay when u press light button? What if u need to set a timer/put stopwatch at night. U press light, then u have few seconds to put timer in this time frame? Or how is it
Great vid btw and thanks for the tips, planning to get them
the light stays on for how long you press it, only a second after does it stay on.
1 or 3 seconds.
The mod I will do to my royale will be a SS case with sapphire but I'll leave everything else intact .
The sapphire will look great
just use a regular pencil eraser, no chemicals or Qtips required, it takes about 3-5 minutes
Woah really? That's awesome
Great tip! Maybe I will mod one and keep one as is.
would isopropyl alcohol also work for wiping the letters ?
yes
Pencil Eraser
Yeah gop gone is way too oily and gross I would probably use some rubbing alcohol and water
What Casio strap is it?
It’s the original stainless steel strap
Can you use nail polish remover?
No! Acetone will melt it
I used an eraser (rubber) and it came of in about 30 seconds. Easy.
you can use eraser for the words
Haha im actually a big fan of all the tech specs on the watch face and get annoyed when they start to come off
For sure! Different tastes are what makes this hobby interesting. BUT, when they start to come off, you may as well take them off completely. Good thing you have this video for reference 😆
"5 alarms, WR100M, 10year Battery, World time, Illuminator", Casio sure got the "in your face" attitude. haha.
I removed my case lettering tonite with alcohol and a pencil eraser removed the letters in less than a minute with no damage to the case.
Nice!
