To me excessive, nerdy lettering is a hallmark of 80s' digital watches, just as flimsy bracelets, awkward operation and annoying beeps. I love my Royale exactly as it is. It makes me feel like a teenager again.
When LCD first came out, the lettering was very sparce, they started having LED LCD combos and the LED typically had no markings on the high end watches, making this particular mod more retro than the 80's which I who am 56 actually prefer the 70's style digitals, LED OR LCD. Im building a casio A168 with a blank steel faceplate, no lettering at all, and putting in a green filter, with an all stainless steel casing and band. It going to look as basic and retro as they initially came back in the day.
Well of course watch mods just comes down to personal taste.... But in my opinion, I think this "wordy" watch looked perfect just as it was originally made... I plan on adding this one to my collection...
I did the same; I don't mind the slight defects, to me it adds a nice wear/aging effect. I love the new look with the case lettering, 5 Alarms, and 10 Year Battery words removed!
Some more tips: use rubber gloves and store the module in a ziplock bag while you are busy so no fingerprints and dust will leave their marks. It is common practice in watch maintenance.
91% isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip works great for taking off the lettering on the outside of the case (the illuminator and world time text). I can't speak to removing the lettering from the interior. I removed the outer text from the silver (stainless band) version of the ae1200, and the 91% isopropyl did not damage or remove any of the silver finish from what I can tell. The process only took about 5 minutes. Cheers!
Good video, and nice mod. Thanks for sharing. Just a tip, when removing the watch module from the case, try inserting your screwdriver at the 6 or 12 oclock positon of the module (theres a small notch to insert into in those 2 spots), and then pry up. Comes out really quick that way. And when rubbing off the lettering, try using the side of the q-tip along with with very light pressure. The side of the q-tip is less pointed, and wont rub off the paint as easily. Looking forward to your next mod
I cut and removed the horizontal bar above the day/date. Was hard to see when there was a shadow from it. Was going to remove the upper bar but figured it was better to stop before it went awry. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
The screen without a plastic divider looks so cool! My Royale arrived yesterday. It’s black, and the silly letters outside are printed with a white a bit faded, not too bright, so I decided to cancel the GooGone order. I read that you should have wait the GooGone chemical sit for a few minutes, and later rubber ( with an adequate plastic tool, not cotton… cotton was nice to a final clean with soap ) My watch shows pm when it’s am… and I didn’t figure out how to fix it, I’m in NYC. My next Casio will be a wave receptor :P The cheap model with lunar phases and random fishes popping up on the screen looks also cool and fun lol
Thanks for the tips. I probably would have taken off the WR100M and left the button labels. Seems a bit more utilitarian and balanced with the CASIO label - in my mind at least. Cheers.
I wouldn't worry about rubbing off the silver paint as well before the 10 year battery gives up the silver paint on the watch body will long ago have rubbed away in places just with daily use.
I used acetone like an idiot for text removal on the divider, the melted plastic shines like a christmas tree in the light. I was upset until I realized if Tom Sachs had done it like that he could sell it as art for thousands. It's definitely mine now.
I Agree...I bought mine just to mod. Erased text on the outside and inside just left Casio and the button functions. VERY clean also! Updated today, taking the discarded rubber strap from my Duro, cut it to lug size (20to18), and tapers perfectly with the Royale! metal and rubber combo makes it sportier and its not available yet from Casio.
You have to let googone sit for 10 minutes.. the scratch came from you loosing your cool and put to much pressure hence taking the case paint scratch probably with the stick part of the q tip since you put some much pressure 🤷♂️ The goo gone method works great it just have to know how to do it and be patient
A couple things: Goo Gone may not be the safest option for removinbg the black print. A lot of rubbing is required and it's the excessve abrasion that will easily remove also too much of the silver finish on the case. I had good success using Eclipse sensor cleaner (for digital camera sensors). This product is ethanol and methanol-based with some isopropyl alcohol. The screws on the back are best loosened and tightened with a JIS and not with a Phillips screwdriver. Casio uses JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screws and a JIS driver will fit more snugly than Phillips with less chance of stripping the screw head. A JIS driver will by the way work perfectly on a Phillips screwhead. If you closely at the screws on the AE-1200 you will see that the scre heads are actually a hybrid between JIS and flathead. Obe slot is horizontal all the way across so you can also use a flathead scredriver. Support the tip of the scredriver with your fingertip so that you don't slip with the flathead scredriver and scratch the caseback.
@@dancarthen3634 Isn't that too abrasive on the display bezel and case finish? I did try an ultra fine polishing compound and it made the matte black finish on the bezel shiny.
I just finished doing this. Use pegwood or a nail care stick and use the chiseled end. The paint part is higher than the case so you can use the flat edge of the chiseled end to rub. It will apply more pressure on the text and less on the case paint. You will remove some case paint but you can more easily blend the paint with the same chisel edge. I used 90% IA. It turned out perfectly.
I ordered one with the plastic case. I ordered a leather and a 2 piece NATO watch strap for it. I would not modify my watch. I prefer to leave it as is. This is supposed to be a terrific watch for the price. It makes a nice knock around watch. If I break it it is low cost to replace. The battery should last ten years with normal use!
Thanks for the tips! I was just about to do this (on the outside lettering only) so I'm glad I watched this video first. Also, I must say that you sir have great taste in art! I love the Lauren Marx print in the background! She is one of my favorite artists along with Alex Grey. Cheers my friend!
Protip: don't remove the seal on the top of the Goo Gone bottle. Instead, use a needle to make a tiny hole. That way you can control how much comes out of it!
Thanks for the video and tips as I'm about to try this mod. And dude, I hope you have invested in some tweezers by now. Maybe watch a few watchmakers at work and you will get some nice tips on proper ways to disassemble and reassemble watches for modding, regulating and battery changing. I was dieing watching you struggle with the screws lol. Anyways, it was helpful and entertaining, got my sub.
I got lucky using the goo gone and didn't scratch the case or damage the paint on the face plate. I took a deep breath and worked on it slowly on a lap top table while watching tv. I put it on a 24mm leather Panerai replacement strap from Amazon and just snipped the ends a little to fit and used a soldering iron on the strap for a clean fit with no frays.
I use turtle wax rubbing compound, I dont have to rub all that hard, just enough power to rub the wordings out. As for the dial plate, I have to rub all the surfaces as close as I could to the words I wanted to clean because rubbing compound rubs the matt plastic into a shine, and if I just do patches of wordings, there will be annoying patches of polished plastic on matt plastic. Last, I bought a $10 black metal bracelet skmei 1382 to salvage the bracelet for my black ae1200
good tips! i'm thinking of getting a black casino royale and modding it too. the proliferation of strap adapters for this watch these days make it also easier to switch straps on it so that's a plus. i'm wondering though is if the isopropyl alcohol would damage the black surface of the watch if that's what i use to erase the texts.
People like to appear "perfect" or "with skills" but it takes time and effort which include mistakes, wasted money and destroyed items. I don't have much shaking and being nervous after doing a lot of it. A funny thing was watch parts flying off but that too is something to think about. In some computers I had stuck screws which I had to drill out and some screen part broke unexpectedly after a long assembly procedure. Still, there is a high "win ratio" around 80-90% of success. For example, you could have bought 10 and 1 bad is only 10% failure. After 100 it's maybe 1-5% of failure.
You did exactly the same thing as Jody on Just One More Watch, who used Goo Gone, and there appeared to be a scratch in virtually exactly the same place. Well done. Now I have to try it......
There is no accounting for taste. Do what you like, as it's a 30.00 watch, but I love the text. It's what makes it look like a retro Casio watch from my youth. Without the writing, the black borders look too big in my opinion

Just ordered this watch yesterday, will be following your video for sure once it shows up. You need to invest in some nice Wiha screwdrivers and throw those other ones in the back of your tool box.
I wish someone from Casio would come on UA-cam and see how many people remove the text so then they could just make it textless in the first place. It would save everyone a lot of anxiety!
Would a Dremel with the cleaning/buffing soft attachments dipped in ISO work on this? It would (or should) at least be a LOT faster. I just ordered my 1200 and was planning on doing the mod to remove text.
Try it on a junk watch first. I've seen the black plastic that Casio uses, start to move under pressure from a Dremel at high speed. It can get very hot in a short time. I learned the hard way when I tried this on a vintage Casio I was trying to salvage.

@CT Account because there are so many videos on UA-cam that feature the text removal with lots of views and comments so it must be pretty common.
@CT Account 🤷♂️
Would a Dremel with the cleaning/buffing soft attachments dipped in ISO work on this? It would (or should) at least be a LOT faster. I just ordered my 1200 and was planning on doing the mod to remove text.
I don't own a Dremel but that sounds like a great idea, let me know how it works out!
Try it on a junk watch first. I've seen the black plastic that Casio uses, start to move under pressure from a Dremel at high speed. It can get very hot in a short time. I learned the hard way when I tried this on a vintage Casio I was trying to salvage.
So dos rubbing alcohol work to remove the text on the case as well or do I need Goo Gone for those texts?
Should be called desk gone
Dude awesome review. Thanks so much for posting.
Thank you!

I end up using a high polish compound that took off the letters within a few seconds cause I find goo gone to be too slow for me.
Nice!
I love my Casio Royale just like as its be
What Casio strap is it?
It’s the original stainless steel strap
I removed my case lettering tonite with alcohol and a pencil eraser removed the letters in less than a minute with no damage to the case.
Nice!
It looks clean but I would rather leave mine alone
I agree although using an eraser can get off a few words to clean it up.
Great video, watch looks awesome
Thank you!
@@the1010watchclub As a follow up I received my Casio world timer last week & have paired it with a black leather Vario band. I used your video as a tutorial & have moded mine exactly the same as yours. Thanks again for the instructions, wish I could post a photo, best wishes from Sydney Australia,
@@jacksalami9945 that's awesome! send a photo to the1010club@gmail.com if you can!

Don’t rub it! Paint it!
Never even thought of that!
Yeah gop gone is way too oily and gross I would probably use some rubbing alcohol and water
Looks awesome
Thank you!
Haha im actually a big fan of all the tech specs on the watch face and get annoyed when they start to come off
For sure! Different tastes are what makes this hobby interesting. BUT, when they start to come off, you may as well take them off completely. Good thing you have this video for reference 😆
I am getting the black and gold or bronze one. It's classic modern and suffocated looking.
My WORLD TIME and ILLUMINATOR now spells ME at the top and ILL at the bottom!
*A ROYALE WITH CHEESE* Vincent Vega.
Use a pencil eraser!! That's it. Works perfectly and a lot faster!
Thanks for the tip!
Can you use nail polish remover?
No! Acetone will melt it
Encontré uno color dorado metálico y quiero saber si existe el modelo metálico dorado , este video me va ayudar , mañana iré a verlo y quizá comprarlo

Nice wrist watch? Omega Speedmaster??
That I’m wearing in this video? I’d love to own a Speedmaster, but that is an Orient Bambino on a NATO strap
@@the1010watchclub it looks nice. good watch
do you guys know why it allways changes time randomly?
"You're gonna need a lot of pressure." Not true. What you need is time. If you want it to be done in 5 minutes? Yeah sure, press down and also take off the stuff underneath it. Or just be much more patient. :-)
Fair enough
use alcohol and don t rub so hard that the stick of the qu tip is touching the bezel.
will take a bit longer .. but no "off paint"..
Yeah I was a little overzealous with the rubbing
also, why removing rubber???
