the big advantage of this kit is that it transforms a sort of disposable watch into something that lasts. it's always the case that gets worn out or the lugs break or the acrylic crystal becomes too scratched, the module is sort of a forever lasting thing. with this kit you get a digital watch that won't need a battery change for more than 10 years and a case to match the same sort of lifespan. stainless steel and sapphire crystal is all you need and this also has a scratch resistant coating on it. it's also cheaper than $200 and you can get only the case for much less. the only thing it needs is a pair of matching sandblasted nato strap adapters.. also there aren't that many well build digital watches, there used to be the pulsar pw3003 or pw3001 but it's been long discontinued.. a casio a1000 is $150 so the price is not that out there for this mod. it's not cheap for sure but it might not be unjustified..
I just picked up a hamilton PSR (@ a super steep discount. They had it at a local department store on clearance and I waited until it was sub $250.) and this watch with this mod strikes me as that same “high class” retro vibe. My one gripe with this mod is they kept the writing in the case.
@@myhandlewastakenandIgaveup Worth noting (for you or someone reading this comment) they offer "sanitized" versions of the case now without any writing. Just bought one a month ago and received it today (which is why I'm here watching how to take it apart properly).
@dephekt_ I am glad they added them. I asked about one during my order process but they weren't available at launch. I still love mine and it's my goto travel watch.
I bought a Casio Tri-graph with a metal case back in the '80's and it's still cranking right along. Other than battery changes, it has never failed. If you are looking for a "one-and-done" watch, the metal upgrade may last you decades and that makes the $$ uplift much less of a factor.
This was a very enjoyable video! I have no plans to drop $200 for the kit but you never know. I do love my Casio Royale. Thanks for the entertainment and for your enthusiasm.
@garyweber8201 did you order the FKM strap from SKX? If so was the strap tapered down from the case? I'm thinking that's the route I'm going to go if it's tapered but it's hard to tell from their photos
@@AlphaRomeoOneFive Yes I did order my FKM strap from SKX and it does taper down from 24.5mm down to 18.4mm. Also has the solid bronze buckle to match the case itself.

I believe it's worth a couple hundred bucks to upgrade it. Come on. People spend insane amounts of money on watches that do half as much than this watch does.

I love the AE1200. It is without a doubt my favourite digital watch. Not by any means perfect-- but excellent nonetheless. To rub salt in the wound, they'd probably add backlight button delay and features from the AE1300 such as the ability to have multiple individual timers.

I spent 170.00 for a solid bronze Kraniodesign case with a Sapphire crystal without buttons, so this is a definite go for me! You won't be disappointed. Got my new case in the mail today. Just finished putting it together.. feels tough as nails! The weightier feel is definitely nicer.
Exactly this. If you have ever bought a Seiko movement you know that all their watches up to, say, 600 dollar only have a 40 dollar movement inside... Never heard any complaints on that.
You took too many links out of one side. I believe you removed 5 links in all…….4 from one side and 1 from the other. Go back and add a link from the long side to the shorter side. It will not only look better but fit better also. Nice upgrade!
Thanks for another great review Nick. I own two AE1200's and a DW291 which this kit also fits. The bend over price keeps me from buying even one. Too bad.
I feel for doing this with the glossy version and a glossy white thing in there with the module. I don't like the Royale much, but really started to use my DW-291H on the side and it's almost the same as far as I know now. On the SKX website it's messy to just buy the specific items we want (without being forced to add a ton) and I didn't want to continue to play with it there now with my tight budget. I could have bought a case for now and basically got scared off. I have 4-5 hobbies to throw money at anyway and started to mod the DW-291H as I don't like the all-black Casio's either. Maybe next year or I sell some of my stuff locally to fund the SKX idea.

I have several $200 watches with a $20 Seiko NH35 movement. I’m actually thinking this mod is worth the money. I’m just trying to decide which options to go with.
The glass is Sapphire and the black case has a very durable paint finish. I think I'll go for the black case and put a rubber strap on. Or maybe I'll do nothing as my Casio Royale arrived today and I'll have to see if I like it enough.
I would love a cheap metal body made out of Chinese pop metal for all I care, paying 200$ is crazy for it too honestly look the exact same. But I do love the all metal ae1200
Well, one justification could be that different models come with different colorway configurations on the faceplate. For example, the model with the bracelet has all white text on the faceplate whereas the all black model with the resin strap has all white as well, but the “10 YEAR BATTERY” portion is in red. Also, I think even the color/tint of the digital display can vary as well with one or two models.
Questions I want to know before I buy: How does the black bezel look on the silver case? I think the silver case and silver bezel looks way worse. How’s the water resist after this mod? Can I switch the Original Casio clasp in on this bracelet, or is the finish too different?
