I Was So WRONG! A $400 G-Shock Metal Watch - Hype Or Future Classic?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 чер 2019
- As most of my audience knows, I am a massive G-shock fan. For me, it has always served as the ultimate rugged affordable tool watch, and it’s one I use everyday during my workouts.
Last year, as part of the ongoing 35th year anniversary of the iconic world-changing digital watch, Casio released a line of metal versions based on the 1983 original. Being late to the party (due mostly to being very content with my $40 DW5600E,) I was slow to check it out, but I finally got one in to review, and I’ve spent a few weeks getting to know the GMWB5000-1.
After a day of filming in Brooklyn, I share my thoughts to see if the watch is worth all the hype and if it is worth the dramatically higher $400 asking price. Join me as I discuss the features of the watch, things I loved about it, things I didn't, my predictions, and thoughts on where G-shock is going wrong.

I have the all metal one, the wife bought me one for Christmas and I love it. If I'm in a rush to get out the door it's the first watch I take as it's always ready to go. It's also the watch that has had the most comments when I've worn it. People do think you are nuts to spend so much on a G Shock but in a few years |I'll still be wearing it and the Apple watch they are wearing will have been superseded..
Lol they'll be on their second one which means both apple watches together would be more than 400 most likely, then in a year or two they'll need another watch while yours is still good as new
apple watches and all that watches with fitness gimmick are junk. Mechanical watches and G-Shocks are eternal (remember calendar till 2099)
I make it work with y g-shock and my Apple Watch seems to work out for me but I do admit I prefer my “real” watches over my Apple
@@play_mcoc 2099? How’s that eternal? Lol
@@brianbuchert6382 it is comparing to your life 🤣🤣
You’re treating a $400 watch like a $4000 watch, respect 👏👏
No, he's treating a good watch like it should be treated, period.
I treat my imaginary watch like a 4 billion dollar MVMT watch
Big boi Darian it actually feels a lot more expensive than it is. When I went to pick mine up there was a fella wearing a royal oak while waiting in line for this...
@@Frankmejor owned/own RO, rolex, breitlings, tudors, iwc, jlc,gs, gp, etc and i love the full metal. in fact my autos dont get wrist time much since...treat all my watches well including swatches, seikos and love them irregardless of branding/cost as i like watches but brands.
meant to say not...
I love how you talk about this watch. The confidence and the style on how you wear the watch compliments your attitude - positive meets swag. One of the best reviews I’ve seen a person do. Even your grammar and the way you speak is flawless ✌️
Thanks for the awesome review! I went out and got one after watching this and I must say, one hell of a cool watch. I wish I could upload a picture here to show it.
I'm a proud owner of a few G's and i do love every model i have. The metal one is on my list for sure!! It's an amazing addition to the line up!
Ahhhhhh... there's just something soothing about your old school vids that I've missed since you hit the big time! I like 'em all, but your "home studio" is pleasantly nostalgic! Keep up the good work!
Very big fan of this G-Shock and I agree with you on the glass. I'm so glad you reviewed this one.
I have the gold negative version, well happy with it, gives my 10 year old square G shock a rest.
Thought it was going to be a scratch magnet, but to my surprise very resistant, not even one scratch in a month and I have banged it a few times.
The excitement and love for time pieces from the host is what makes him the best at this..i dig his work. G shock i wear every day iv only had 2 in 25 years of pool plumbing. The glue and cleaner wipes right off. Everything from boots hammers and excavators cat and deere gets destroyed building pools..but not the g shock. It does not even get damaged??!!!
Have you broken many fingers or knuckles? Most likely no because you're careful with your hands and your watch is basically strapped to your hand. I'm sure you being careful at work is the most important factor
Just bought one last October 2019 and have worn it practically everyday for half a year now though i have to say it sometimes is annoyingly heavy, but def enjoy wearing it. Also, you'd be surprised the attention it gets and is also a conversation starter. I totally forgot my other swiss watches. Totally worth every single cent. For me the design and the idea behind it would make this model an instant classic.
I wear a casio square calculator watch for work and sometimes wear it out as my dress watch because of the fondness I have for the clunky thing.
I have had one of these for a while now. It's a nice piece good for a daily wear when you don't want to bash your Rolex !
G-shock metal watches are very popular in Asia here!!! I've got 1 metal one and 2 common g shocks. Luv your videos btw. Luv from SG🇸🇬
Thanks for ❤️
Hands down, G Shocks are the best outdoor activity watches.
Last year in Yosemite my GW5600 was an absolute trooper. From swimming to cycling to camp fire- in dark it illuminates when you turn your wrist. It does it all.
Great review as always TGV.
I'm not a big fan of digital watches, but I seriously want to own that G-Shock. Keep up the awesome content Gentry
I didn't like digital either, but now in my late 30s I picked up a G shock. The functionality and robustness is great for someone who travels overseas and wants to be able to get quick and highly accurate time on the go.

It works because it simply looks great! The all metal isn’t as bling as you might imagine as the bracelet is brushed. It’s a massively tough piece of jewellery!
A great point, thank you. I guess supremely functions jewelry!

Does it scratch easily? The brushed metal?
Love G-shocks! Wish you could review the MTG-B1000 as well.
I like the solar power and negative display though.
This video totally convinced me to buy one of these!!
Doing what you do best! Reviewing watches that are relevant and affordable for the man in the street. Your best G Shock review!
G-Shock vs old school Timex Iron Man comparison in the future? I was actually in Philly on Sunday. Keep up on the quality videos.
Hey TGV, you made my day! Always great reviews on interesting watches, well I can't accept that look of a polished G Shock but this is my opinion who cares? Keep on, you're the best !
Thank you Vic, loving the positivity, even when the watch is not your cup of tea, a sign of a real man worthy of respect.
Onwards and upwards my friend!

I have the full metal black resin strap and i love it. It's currently my favorite G shock and my go to everyday watch. Very comfortable and stylish 😎
Just the right time when I am thinking about purchasing my first G Shock !!
And the steel g shock is gorgeus !!
OMG, your first G-shock eh?!?! Congrats in advance, you are about to have a lot of fun!!!

Maybe I should try this G shock too and i will let you know what will I buy.
Thank you so much TGV !
@@user-jc7dy6zb9d You won't be disappointed in whatever G shock you choose 😎
This is a fabulous celebration of an icon. I was born in 1979 so have the same nostalgic pull towards the 'squares' and can say this gave me more fizz than any previous releases. I own the silver with bracelet, a 7" wrist, more watches than fingers, and am happier wearing this than any of my others. I believe it packs its best punch when worn on occasions where it really shouldn't be. This is a rebel, and should be allowed to behave badly at every opportunity. Suits n'all. Still loving the vids TGV. Massive congratulations on the life promotion ;)
So glad you covered this watch, been fascinated with it since it came out.
Have you ever done a review of Casio’s MR-G line of watches? Their MRG-G1000DC-1AJR and MRGG2000HA-1A look amazing.
A full metal version of the GMN5500 is certainly WOW. I bought a full metal gshock square after watching this vid.
I'm a G and I was in SHOCK of how comfortable, amaizing, and perfect this watch is. I may sell three brand new DWs to get this.
Why do you have 3 brand new DWs?
@@archygrey9093 I currently don't. Just the dw5600-sk. I don't wear it often nor the gmw-b5000 but once or twice per month. My Tudor Black Bay Steel gets the most wrist time
Great video and review... Not sure I can justify an extra 400 bucks for a metal case. I am enjoying my GMN-550-1CJR though!
Thank you William, I totally get it.
Enjoy your G-Sock, great choice btw ;-)
Best regards,

Was on the fence for which version to get till this video.
Not a G-Shock fan, but love this particular one with steely look. It looks more like my silver F-91W with black rubber strap.
Thank you for the review as always!
Watching this sporting my newly purchased DW-5500-BB 😁⌚️
Ah yes. The king g shock. Indeed they are massive. But as you say you ave the wrists for it.
Yay! You're back in the war-room! I love your Benrus. It’s remarkable how good condition it is.
I have the B-5000D-1 stainless and love it. Think it’s an awesome piece. Joins my Explorer 39mm and Avenger II GMT that form my top 3. GW-M5610 on resin link strap for daily work wear though. Good review 👍
I am considering the smaller unisex GMS5600-1, ...silver, without the 'G-Shock Protection' lettering on the bezel. I think it is the first truly beautiful G-Shock. If you can please do a comparison review with the full size version.
You should really review a Casio Pro Trek PRG-600Y. It's part of a series that features a classic analog face with a digital inlay. It can display two time zones at once and features an altimeter, barometer, and a compass. And it's solar powered. I'm in the Navy and it's been my everyday watch for two years throughout flight training!
Thank you Alex for the head up, I will check it out and consider it. Not familiar with that model at all, but I do love pro-treks.
Good luck flying my friend and thank also for your service.
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry Awesome! I'd even be willing to send mine out to you for review. They're kind of an odd watch to find on people's wrists and can be hard to find with retailers.
I love G Shock but I never liked the negative display, I would buy the metal with normal display.
I want this bc of the negative display
Are you blind or what? The only thing I don't like about this watch is that is made out of metal, I prefer the plastic G-socks, mostly the ones with negative displays, they look so military and futuristic. There is nothing like a negative display on a watch, period. 😡 😡 😡
Thats the one u have love it
As a Police officer I relied on a Casio Tough Solar for a few years. And it served me well! But I went back to the basics. Now rocking a regulated Seiko SNK809 with NH36 movement and black rubber strap as my duty watch 💪😎🙏
You can never go wrong with the SNK809, I hope it serves you equally as well. Thank you for service sir!
Be safe my friend and thank you for the comment.

Why did you switch? Analog? I wore an Ironman for decades. But now that I've developed watches as a hobby, I find analog actually quicker and easier to read.
$400 for mineral glass? C'mon G Shock. Cool watch, but would expect Sapphire for $400.
sapphire is not resistant to impacts like if you accidentally knock it against something its more likely to shatter. Its a Gshock so its supposed to be tough. Sapphire is more suited for dress watches since youre not doing sports with it
Flat Earth bingo
@@flatearth7800 that cant be it because there are square models with sapphireglas
@@MrSimon1909 we got custommers in the store all the time with shatered saphire crystals. They assume they are unbreakable because they are scratch resistant. In fact, seiko got their own crystals wich are a little bit more scratch resistant then mineral, but not as brittle as saphire.
Mineral glass is a lot stronger, almost anything other than a direct impact won't crack the glass. Wore a similar G-Shock (G-7800) for 10 years and the glass could take it all.
Good afternoon TGV, just three days ago I had the chance to have a first hand experience with the GMWB5000. It's a serious watch in my opinion. Of course Casio will always stand for affordable watches, but I like somehow how Casio expands the G-Shock universe with models like the MTG-B1000RB or ultimately with the MRG-G2000GA. Future Classic for me.
Thank you Heiko, I could not agree more.
So glad to hear you enjoyed it too, just googled the MRG and MTG you mentions, wow, they look serious!!!!
Best regards,

Hiya.Yes those MTG steel analogues are something else! Casio are a unique brand that deserves the respect it gets! Cheers.
I can't wait when they come out with the beater resin Rolex Submariner.... Definitely getting it!
Breitling did!
@@mightbesherwood1313 I want one!
I think not using Sapphire glass was a good choice. I've had sapphire shatter at work. Acrylic is a more robust choice for this kind of watch. Cheers!
Its not Acrylic... its mineral crystal
@@DMBVR4 I stand corrected. Thank you for keeping me informed!
I love my G-steel watch it works with casual or dress
I love the GMW-B5000D, just when you wear a business shirt people look a bit droll. ;-)
i bought the full metal, 5000D. loving it. The classic design (based on the original 5000C from 1983 with full metal is something unique from casio. Not a fan of g-shock but this really caught my eyes.
I think it is a well deserved upgrade of a great modern classic.
Awesome watch, only because I have too many watches I couldn't justify buying this gshock and decided to pass on it :( ... maybe one day lol
I've barely worn any other watch since I got one of these last year. My only real complaint is that Casio didn't put a sapphire on it. At that price it should have one, and they do put them on some of the more expensive G-Shocks, e.g. the Mudmaster.
I can totally see why now, I am still wearing mine too!
Thank you my friend, keep enjoying it.
Best regards,
TGV
Still wearing it now 2 years later @Username ?

The Royal Oak of digital watches.
This train wreck of a watch couldn't hold a candle to the AP Royal Oak.
You must be joking if you think this watch comes anywhere near the Quality of an AP.
@@quarters-eye8922 If you bothered to read other reviews it has one of the best bracelets in the business, very easy to resize.
Also I was watching an interview on Hodinkee with a guy who owned top Pateks and he was so chuffed showing off his Full Metal Square.

He said royal ok of digital watches I believe. Wtf other digital watch comes with this robustness and quality? The damn thing also comes in solid gold and cost 70 grand. So yeah, its the royal oak of digital watches.

Hmmm...... will we be seeing a full titanium square G in the future? It'll have the coolness and the light weight to make it the ultimate square G!
Imagine a considerably higher price tag for a full titanium version. I'd buy one though, lol
@@raksh9 I just hope that if they really did a titanium one, it's not going to be a special or limited edition. That would be a bummer!
I have the gold version and I love it. Every time I wear my watch, ppl always stop me to ask me about the watch.
Thank you Pedro, I am seriously considering it. I have to see one in the flesh first, how is the gold tone of it?
Sounds like they did a good job on it.
Best regards,
TGV
I think the reason for not using sapphire glass was not financial, but rather an engineering decision as mineral glass is less likely to shatter.
Nah, other g-shocks have sapphire. They did it because they thought they could get away with it.
I have a mud man and it has sapphire, it was abused in all possible ways but it never shattered
Have to agree, lack of sapphire is disappointing at this price point, especially when we consider that other manufacturers do include it on similar price watches.
I want the full metal, it’s full metal or go home!😋
What I hate about Casio is how awful they look on aftermarket straps. Give us regular lugs.
I think that the only Casio watch that looks good on a strap (only nato though) is the f91w. But it's a hell of a task even getting it on.
@@Dmichoacan Maybe you haven´t yet seen the Casio Duro on Nato straps, looks awesome

I have two G-Shocks and in my opinion there’s no better and more reliable budget friendly watch you can buy that you can strap on your wrist and belt around. Functionality, robustness and if you want it, even a bit of bling. Casio has some serious street cred.👍🏻💪🏼
100% spot on. It needs sapphire glass. I would happily pay more if it did.
OK FINE !!!! IM GETTING ONE.......you convinced me lol
Eiraj Mirza the one TGV has is fairly easy to source MSRP. The all metal with metal bracelet is difficult to find.
@@DonutIgnoramus Thanks for the advice. I actually cant find any of them in stock right now :/

EBay they sell at msrp or with a small mark-up... I got the all black metal..
@@MyMarsham oh please no, before I know it I'll end up with a dozen gshocks. Not that that's a bad image lol
After having owned a gshock and wearing it while working in construction, i came to the conclusion that, Gshock is not the ultimate rugged watch, the glass scratches like theres no tomorrow to the point where you cant read the watch anymore, the rubber strap fell appart 4-5 times and the side buttons get stuck, lasted 2 years. I bought a hamilton khaki field. 6 years now... UNDESTRUCTIBLE!

The sapphire crystal will break upon impact, this is not in accordance with the g-shock philosophy. I think that's why they didn't add it.
Then how come some other g shocks have sapphire?
@@xpusostomos MR GS GPS are not as tough as run-of-the-mill ones
@@jasonamoako9729 that's not the only model with sapphire
Wait, is Casio planning on entering the smart watch market? I might have to buy my GW5000 later...
The problem with smart watches is the planned obsolescence. It makes it dependent on a software support ecosystem. That makes the watch way less enduring.
To put things in perspective, only a few people collect old iPhones. Also, owning a Huawei today is a liability with the current events affecting technology.
G-Shock even without bluetooth, GPS and radio functionality is still the best post-apocalyptic watch around.
¿Why to ruin every nice watch with a NATO strap?
Exactly
Because is a way to wear a great watch in low profile, low visibility, non gorgeous. But in this case NATO straps is not necesary, G-shocks looks cheap
Why to no English good
Is Watchbox selling these now?

Yes a few, my favourite is the gw-m5610-1ber
May I know why?
Tons of G Shocks are big bucks these days. So $400 while not cheap is not expensive. Granted the expensive models have tons of features vs a cheap model made of metal.
Love G-shock. Bullet proof watch.
+- 15 sec a month? Even more impressed by the gs 9f now
That is if you are out of reach of a radio antenna for the time signal (so no problem if you are in north america, most of Europe, most of China and Japan) or if locked in a faraday cage (i.e always indoors, as walls easily block the signal). And a worst case that I think is common to all casio quartz movements (as far as I know, I did not research that). If you live in one of those regions and take the watch outside (which is what it is designed to do) every now and then, you will never experience a drift and will never have to set time or date (even swith to daylight saving and all).
My GD350 is within a second a month. I think the +/- 15 second rating is way off, but sounds good and then to find my watch is better than that is awesome.
+/- 15s a month is the normal accuracy for the bulk of quartz watches. That's also what G-Shocks run at when the atomic sync is disengaged or cannot be received (for models that have one).
Many run of the mill Citizen quartzes run at about +/- 5s a month. Some Bulova's promise 10s a year - my experience is about +12s per year with the Lunar Pilot.
GS promise +/- 15s a month or +/- 1s a day with the Spring Drive. Most owner experiences vary between +2 and +5s a month. With the standard 9F quartz variants they promise +/- 10s per year, with the LE's +/- 5s a year... and I'm pretty sure they also under-promise and over-deliver there.
Mine changes to the second when comparing to google time.
G Shock all the way 😎 for me always
I like your style sir!
I certainly can see why, they make it hard to wear anything else.
Thank you DS,

The Terminator T-1 of G-Shock
A metal G-Shock, Hmmm Someone’s gotten a little uppity since he joined Watchbox :)
Imho, a G-Shock made of metal is like a rifle made of latex.
Disagree, it’s how they always were supposed to look and be like.
Too blingy....give it a sandblasted finish & it'd look much more tooly & fit for purpose.
Imho: $400 for this G-Shock are too much for me. I´ll stick with my 5610, which is basically the same minus metal case and bluetooth. ;-)
If I had this in middle school I would be a god.
So a $50 watch with a $20 dollar case upgrade doesn't add up to $400. You are confusing gimicktry with craftsmanship and value.
Not at all, thank you.
Best regards,
TGV
I find that I'm rarely in disagreement with you, but this, to me, is the proverbial lipstick on a pig.
