- In this episode, I will tell you everything you need to know about the beautiful beast of grapevines: Syrah! Syrah or Shiraz is a widely planted but often misunderstood grape variety. The wines can age for decades and can produce amazing quality, but it is also used in many basic wines. Syrah is the world’s sixth most planted grape variety of any color but it does not have the same reputation as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

In Spain Syrah is mostly used for blending as far as I know. There are a couple of wines in the 10€-20€ range that I like quite a lot: Valtosca (DO Jumilla, from Bodegas Casa Castillo) and Zahirs (DO Campo de Borja, from Bodegas Borsao).
Oh wow, I learned so much! Very new to wine, and Syrah/Shiraz as my starting point. Very fortunate to have plentiful wineries down here in South-East Australia to explore. :)

Wow. This explains why I hardly ever taste the oak in Syrah. I believe that many Syrahs which I have tasted have been picked too late due to its' ability to withstand later picking. It really is about tasting as many wines as possible to train your palate.

I love Syrah / Shiraz, it is probably my favourite grape. For every day drinking, you can't beat Tim Adams Clare Valley Shiraz. For something a bit more special (which I can still just about afford occasionally), I turn to Penfolds St Henri. My dream Shiraz would be either Grange or Hill of Grace and my Syrah would be L Chave Hermitage.

In Australia the Shiraz of Penfolds are realy not bad but also in Tuskany (in the area of Cortona) they make some beautyful wines
My favorite Syrah is from Arnot Roberts. I remember the last drop running down the bottle to stain the flower on the label. A real beautiful wine to me. Reminds me of northern Rhône in style. Love your channel. Keep up the great work.

I have to admit that the fact about oak flavor surprised me a bit because according to my experience in Australian Shiraz oak is very easy to smell and often is the predominant aroma. Great video!

In Canada, we get access to a lot of Chilean wine, and I’ve had excellent Syrah produced there. A visit to Casablanca Valley a few years ago also boosted my respect for cooler weather Syrah, as they do it very well.

Had a most wonderful Old World Syrah vs New World Shiraz in the year 2000. The New World flight was Grange 1981, 1982 and Hill of Grace 1976. The Old World flight was La Landonne 1982, Chave 1978 and La Chapelle 1978. Universally, we all liked the Old World style more but each wine was awesome!! Surprisingly, the !976 Hill of Grace was still fiercely tannic!
Syrah is my favorite. The best Syrah that I’ve had so far is the Maison Bleue Voyager Syrah from Walla Walla Washington. I’ve never had anything like it and the hint of blueberry sends it over the top.

Love this one - thought you might have mentioned Grange as the standout version of Shiraz coming out of Australia as the most refined version .... (a little out of my price range) ... Would be fun to see you compare a 15 year old Grange, 15 year old French Syrah, and a 15 year old GSM to hear you talk through the similarities and differences. Cheers
Hot tip: Check out their St. Henri. It's also high quality, but they use much less oak (much bigger barrels), and it is like a fifth of the price.
Grange blows away any old world wine...
ive had grange and cheval blanc 2010, this is incorrect. both were excellent but the cheval blanc definitely takes a slight edge. more finesse@@alwaysright3718

My favourite Syrah, or Shiraz as we call it in Australia, is the Petaluma Shiraz from the Adelaide Hills in South Australia. Great video.

I actually have to admit the most recent one I had was the pepperJack sparkling red. I personally enjoyed it. It was easy drinking. But I do understand why it’s not overly popular

Hahaha I tasted recently in Hunter Valley and fully agree - sparkling shiraz is horrible AND fun! Not a good pairing with really good steak, that's for sure.

A great Shiraz to enjoy as a meal on itself. Or moderately with matching food.
Unfortunately good Australian Shiraz wines have become quite pricey - I remember when they first came to Europe there were examples of very good quality and yet quite affordable.
Fortunately you can still find really good Syrah wines in the Minervois (Languedoc-Rousillon) that are not that expensive.
Great video on a great grape varietal! Interesting to hear how you pronounce the y of Syrah most of the times, I guess it has to do with the german pronunciation, because everywhere else I have heard it pronounced "ee", like in see. My favorite is from the Northern Rhone, La-la-la and La Chapelle. Great memories of late 70s-early 80s vintages, which I could afford at that time, but I have not tasted the more recent vintages because I cannot afford them! I remember buying La Mouline and La Landonne at 160/180 french francs in the mid 80s! Even the "basic" Guigal Brune et Blonde 1979 was amazing! I have tasted more recent vintages of it, but they were not that amazing :(
My favorite Shiraz are the wines from Penfolds. I also liked John Duval's 'Entity'.
Hi, great Video. One of the best Syrah /Shiraz you can buy for an affordable price are Ben Glaetzers Amon Ra and Dan Standish - The Standish both from Australia. For sure not really fair to compare with Syrah from France, but as I wrote for the Price a TOP Purchase

Grape vnes from Shiraz (Iran) were transplanted in Australia, hense, the name Shiraz. Syrah, same grape variety is from France.
KOSTANTIN!! Spain has one of the best Syrah I've tried. "Taberner", specially vintage 2015, from Sierra de Cadiz. Yes, it's from Andalusia. Also in Sierra de Ronda (Málaga) they make great syrah coupages. It's like spanish Amarone.
I am from Australia, home of the big Shiraz wines! Hard question but my most memorable wine was a 98 Runrig (bit of viognier thrown in). Astralis is also an awesome drop I like it better than grange

Very good video! My favourite Shiraz is Woodcutter’s Shiraz (Torbreck), full bodied but with silky, rich taste, with elegant traces of wood combined with black fruit aromas. Also, Stifler's Mom Shiraz from my homeland is very good too. You shoud make some review about Serbian wines, I think you'll be astonished with the quality of Serbian wines.

Torbreck - The Factor. 2013 or 2016 are both excellent. Shiraz by Farr is beautiful as well - I only have the 2020 an 2021 vintages and they taste great now… it will be interesting to see what they are like in 10 years time.
Good video, for hobby I planted 3 shyras plants. So when i want to to go bicktime on my sandy high bit foresty sour area I should barrel my wine on fresly oak barrels because this wine won't absorb to mutch of that taste. Not to weak against early spring frost and fast ready to harvest and wild like my English writing, i like it 🇪🇺🌱📈😁
hi, greetings from South Africa - my favourites are : Tamboerskloof, Ernie Els Proprieters and Saronsberg Syrah/Shiraz (Here in ZA winemakers use either culitivar label)
Mullineux syrah, Kevin Arnold Shiraz, Vergelegen Reserve shiraz and Hartenberg for a cheaper option... those are my faves

Favorite Syrah is too tough as I am a big fan of the variety. One of the very memorable ones was a Mr. Riggs Piebald Syrah from the Adelaide Hills of Australia. It is most definitely a cool climate Syrah and not a Shiraz. This would be a tough one in a blind tasting as most people would recognize it as Syrah but would probably not be able to say where in the world it comes from as it is so obviously not from Barossa Valley or the McLaren Vale.
Grange by Penfolds out of South Australia is very nice but St Henry gives Ita good run for the money, being about 1/6th the price. Then there's Henschke's Hill of Grace also rather yummy. Wynns also produce some crackers out of the Coonawarra, Heathcote in Victoria produce some sensational Shiraz's as well as the Great Southern in Western Australia, such as Poachers Ridge, Gilberts and Dukes.

I'm an expat living in Australia (and probably biased), but I feel Tellurian Redline Shiraz 2018 is about as good as it gets. (and great value at about $30AUS / $20EUR)
It is pretty hard to find a Shiraz from the the Heathcote district that isn't excellent... although they only started really getting popular about 10 years ago.
Australian always mention Grange as our outstanding red but I disagree. The best Australian Red I tasted was a 1990 E & E Black Pepper Shiraz from the Barossa Valley in South Australia. Magnificent, balanced, rich and delectable. Try some!
Great video! Today, Penfolds Bin 28. Imported wines are expensive in Brazil, and our national Syrah has shown great results, but different then Rhône and Australia.

Thanks a lot for greeting me in your video! Didn't have time to watch this one before because I have been very busy during the last days as a result of trying to "build" my own wine cellar, at the moment.
Its funny that I had Syrah in my glass yesterday and maybe I should have read some discriptions of the typical taste of this grape variety before because I never (or at least I don't remember) recognized pepper in Syrah before which confuses me a bit. I have no problem with smelling pepper as spice and I drank a Zweigelt a few weeks ago which tasted like pepper and I also think I once had Malbec with pepper taste aswell but never in Syrah. Maybe I was just unlucky with never having had pepper in it although I have already had a few or I have a problem with smelling and tasting pepper just in Syrah?
However, you were asking for our favourite Syrahs and mine is: MAS D'AUZIERES "SYMPATHIE POUR LES STONES", Coteaux du Languedoc, 2013. It really impressed me because of its intense taste for blackberries, which I liked a lot.
You seem to be very sensitive to Rotundone. I need to try the sympathy pour les Stones - the name is great.

I opened a 2006 La Chapelle Hermitage by Paul Jaboulet at Christmas and it was excellent.

Great video, I always liked Syrah. Since Northern Rhône is more expensive I usually look at Langue d’Oc for some nice ones, just recently got a Castalides Icône La Grange (Premier Cru) which is waiting for me in the cellar :) How does the style of Langue d’oc compare to Northern Rhône when it comes to Syrah? 🤔
Thanks. I would say, that many of the Languedoc Syrah wines are blended with other varieties, so they are not only the expression of Syrah. On top of that Northern Rhone wines tend to be fresher, more structured and less alcoholic. I guess not many people would argue against the fact that the best Syrahs from France are from the Northern Rhone ... in general!

I have a question regarding the peppery note in Shiraz.
When you say it is peppery, is it mostly related to aroma and flavor of pepper or is it also related to the spicy and piquant "feeling" it gives in the mouth (and also nose maybe).
Whenever I taste australian shiraz, and feel like I caught the peppery note, I also feel the spicy, piquant and refreshing feeling in my mouth and nostrills.
Should I distinguish this spicy and piquant feeling from peppery note as it may be derived from high alcohol rather than "Rotundone"? Or can this feeling also come from the peppery note in Shiraz?

I have not tasted the Syrahs from those two wineries but I have tasted some good ones from Italy!

For wine breakdowns can you include guidelines for cellaring? Trying to learn wine that are fuller but less tannic like the Aussie style do not need to be cellared nearly as l9ng?

Thanks. I would start with some classics: Crozes Hermitage and Barossa Shiraz are good starting points.
Strange to do a video on shiraz & not mention Penfold's Grange which is considered the new world's only equivalent to a first growth, or Henschke's famed Hill of Grace, the best regarded single-vineyard shiraz in the country. Also, Bin 389 is a blend that's predominately Cab Sauvignon.
Have you ever tried clonakilla shiraz? It's a super cool climate shiraz and very elegant.

Mature Shiraz wine (9 or more years) makes the best beef gravy.

Hi Konstantin, I hope I'm not being annoying but it sounds like you are not aware of white Shiraz and as a master of wine,I find this surprising I was going to order some from my local wine merchant(Red Nose wine,Tipperary, Ireland) but I didn't want to buy something that would not work. I have seen this wine on various sites and I think Australia produces it mostly. Anyway thanks for replying.
As far as I know, White Shiraz is a synonym for Trebbiano. If you are interested in the wine you should try it but I have not tasted it and cannot recommend it.
