  • Today we are going to talk about a grape variety that rules the world, produces excellent wines, and has defined how people expect red wine to be. The variety is so famous that you can only say the first part of the name, and everyone knows what you are talking about: Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon ist he most widely planted grape variety in the world. This was not always the case but the hype for Bordeaux blends and the adaptability of this grape variety lead to a planting boom.

Thank you! I’m sitting here with a Médoc from 2016 and it’s my first Cabernet Sauvignon wine bottle, so I’m happy that you mentioned the name of what I got! I’m actually also drinking from the exact same glass that you showed as an example for the best Cabernet. It’s the only type of wine glass that I have, so maybe Cabernet is the wine I am supposed to drink. 🤔 After drinking mostly Chianti recently I find it very soothing with this bottle of Médoc. Especially good together with brie! Chianti with 100% sangiovese was something to drink with beef , and I don’t feel like eating beef everyday 😝 I know, it’s hard to believe! Cheers from Oslo, Norway 🇳🇴

Cabernet is my favourite varietal, as an Australian who has lived in the US, Europe and now Argentina, the ability for Cab to reliably reflect terroir is perhaps its greatest attraction to me! I’ll always love a Coonawarra cab the best though!

I like Bordeaux blends from the left bank. I found I like Hault Medoc to be great as well as Medoc. I went to Napa two months ago with my family and got burnt out by Cabernet Sauvignon but I there where a few AVAs for Napa I like. Oak Knoll Road AVA and Stagg’s Leap District AVA makes some nice Cabernet. I have a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon I got from a natural winery in Napa that primally uses used oak barrels for their reds and it makes it hard for me to detect flavors and aromas. I tried the Bordeaux blend and it the use of used oak didn’t give me any standout flavors, mainly smoke.

Hallo Konstantin.

I live in San Francisco, so we are spoiled for choice when it comes to good cab.... or just good wine in general. That said, once you've had your share of the big Napa cabs (Stag's Leap, Shafer, Silver Oak, Mondavi To Kalon Reserve, etc) it starts to get a bit boring honestly. I prefer a wider variety of grapes.... recently have been enjoying blauer zweigelt from Austria and pinot from Willamette Valley. You should do a video on all the dumb, hype-driven, overpriced cult Cabs we have here like Screaming Eagle, Scarecrow, Harlan, etc so the new money collectors here stop wasting their money on them.... On a serious note, would enjoy a video on Greek wines!

I’m a firm believer in serving a big Cab with certain dishes, especially a roast or grilled meats.
California produces some amazing Cabs but the prices for a good quality offering are getting seriously out of touch with the average consumer.
I find a better selection of Bordeaux’s and a more reasonable price point at my local wine merchants.

I have been too intimidated by Cabernet Sauvignon to thoroughly explore it, but I've decided to bite the bullet and try to find some affordable, approachable examples. I started my wine exploration too late in life to invest in wine that needs to mature in the bottle for years, nor do I have the means to buy most well-aged Bordeauxs. So far, the inexpensive cabs I've tried usually come off second best to other varietals, but I thought I should give it more of a chance. I hear Chilean cabs are good value, but I also hear that they taste rather different than French examples. Recommendations welcome.
