I use this wine key: Laguiole en Aubrac Wine Key Ebony
I have used this glass in this Video: RIEDEL Performance Cabernet Sauvignon, RIEDEL Sommelier Cabernet Sauvignon
I have tasted the following wines in this Video:
    2004 Petrus:
    www.wine-searcher.com/find/pe...
The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
    50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
First of all, it is one of the best wines coming out of Bordeaux with a great track record to prove its ability to produce outstanding wine. It has produced more than 10 wines that received a perfect score from Robert Parker and is the favorite wine of presidents, kings, and billionaires
I visited Petrus twice and the winery is fairly small and unassuming. It is not one of those amazing Chateaux that you see in Bordeaux left bank but it has a long history.
It was for a long time considered to be a very good estate but it was not that famous initially. The region of Pomerol on the right bank is more rural and the quality of its terroir was overlooked.
Petrus began to break through after the 1945 vintage. This was also the time when the Moueix family started to sell their wines. They made the winery famous in Europe and the US and even took over control of the estate in the middle of the 20th century.
The vineyard is 11.4 hectares in size - way smaller than the vineyards of the first growths in the Medoc. Lafite for instance has more than 100 hectares of vineyards. It is located on a small plateau - not a steep vineyard but only a slightly elevated area.
The soil is composed of clay and it is different from most other surrounding vineyards.
Christian Moueix introduced green harvesting to the estate to reduce the crop level and Petrus is only based on 100 % Merlot since 2010, even though they used to have a little bit of Cabernet Franc on the estate.
They do not produce a second wine so all of the base wines that do not satisfy their standards are sold off as nameless Pomerol or Bordeaux rouge.
Quality is only one factor when it comes to the price though. I mean you can find wines that receive great scores and are a lot cheaper.
The famous critic Robert Parker was sometimes a bit critical of the estate and in his Bordeaux book he wrote that other Pomerols re on the same level or even better. But Petrus represents more than the best Pomerol can ever offer- it is more like a Myth than a wine.
That is certainly true I remember well the special moments when I was a young sommelier, and someone ordered a bottle of Petrus. Pulling that cork was an honor and the guest who purchased it was our favorite guest of the night …
The wine production is also fairly limited compared to Latour, Lafite, Margaux, and Co. and as demand is high and supply is low the prices shoot up into the stratosphere…
The price is however crazy and I don’t think that there is any relationship between price and quality when it comes to these wines. I also have to say: The Haut Brion that was in second place in the survey would have been a lot cheaper …
The 2004 Haut Brion cost around 700 Dollars a bottle which now sounds like a bargain … It is crazy how flexible our relationship to money is.
The wine that I discovered is from the 2004 vintage which is a solid year but not a great one. This is one of the reasons that the wine was less expensive… still very expensive but less expensive.
Robert Parker wrote this about the wine:
The dark plum/ruby-tinged 2004 Petrus possesses high acidity as well as copious amounts of sweet cherries and black currants intermixed with hints of cola, earth, and truffles. Deep, medium-bodied, concentrated, ripe flavors are excruciatingly firm and tannic. This backward, structured, muscular Pomerol requires a decade of cellaring, but it possesses the potential to be the longest-lived wine of the vintage, lasting 30-40 years. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035.

I have a crazy story with a Petrus 1974. I was having dinner with my girlfriend in a small restaurant in Mulhouse when I noticed a couple next to us was drinking this bottle. Seriously, they had just a few glasses and left the rest of the wine there. I couldn’t resist and asked the sommelier for a glass to taste. He said ok and was very generous to us. As you say, Konstantin, this experience you will never forget.

I think the biggest reason this channel has grown and continues to grow is Constantine's ability to relate to his audience and vice versa . I love the way he takes you through the buying process and the buyers dilemma (how does one get a descent bottle at a certain price point). My favourite part is when he rates the wine 93 points but the experience a 100%. If anything starting the channel was worth it just to be able to drink that bottle of Petrus . Bravo Konstantine keep it up but on a regular basis keep tasting the stuff I can afford and buy - my wine education benefits from this

My best wine memory is from back in 1984. I was just starting to learn to appreciate wine and the grocery store in our very small rural Oregon town had a small but nice selection of wines. I purchased a bottle of Barton & Guestier Saint-Emilion. I thought the wine was heavenly. I know now it's not a great wine but to me at the time it was part of my wine awakening and it was perfect. Thank you for your great content and causing me to remember this very dear memory.

I am a camera operator mostly for reality tv. I am a big fan of wine but have to keep my selection within my price range (there are of course plenty of amazing wines well under $30). Long story short, I am filming with an actor internationally and in scene he decides to order a 2001 vintage of Petrus in attempt to add spectacle to the otherwise uneventful meal. Scene ends and all seated at the table leave to head to their next location while me and the other camera guy stay behind to pack up equipment. Its maybe a short time into wrapping out that we realize that the bottle is still sitting on the table 2/3 full! No one left at the restaurant seemed to be interested in the fate of this discarded prop.... except me and my colleague.
I was relatively early in my wine journey then, but there was no doubt that this was the best wine i had ever tasted, until then i had not experienced the full potential of what wine could be; I think it was a major experience that led me to start tasting wines from all over the world. I will never forget the memory loading cases into a van while sipping Bordeaux on some back street of Paris, it was perfect.

The Petrus estate is using the best quality corck from French corckoaks, and the possibility to have a corcked Petrus is almost absolutely nihil. The controll during the making process of the corcks is highly accurate.

@@gerylsteve3079 Sorry to coment this. France dont have cork trees. 80% of world corks are produced in Portugal, i can bet that the opened cork is from a Portuguese producer. And you are correct, the process of production of this type of corks is very accurated and controled, the "cork taste" is more and more controled. Some times the wine producers dont want to pay the fair price to the cork stopper, is why several corks with "taste" still exist on the market.

The bottle had been sitting on a rack in the wine merchant I worked at, being sadly ignored for several years, retailing for around £50 (a tough sell). One day I decided to take a punt on it, expecting it it be over the hill. Great segment! Thank you for sharing this amazing and informative experience. My best wine experience was what I call my wine epiphany. Barely into wine at the time, I had a 1989 Lynch-Bages, and oh my, I knew right then what great wine was supposed to be about. From that moment to this day, my wine bar has been set by that beauty.

Back in the mid 1990s’, a local wine store was having a fire sale on their accumulated stock of mostly Bordeaux wines. They let me peruse the shelves in the basement where wooden boxes were sometimes just stacked on top of each other with no organization. 1989 Lynch Bages was a case buy at $36 per bottle. 1989 Palmer was $50. 1989 Angélus was $75 for a magnum. Boggles the mind at what they go for now.

Thank you for your inspired video where you had fun with a Petrus 2004. I enjoyed it. You then asked which experience has made the most impression in terms of a wine tasting. I think it was in the mid 90's, I was with a business associate and we were having dinner and celebrating our partnership. We ordered an Opus One (Napa Valley). It didn't stop at 1 bottle. i will never forget this experience. The taste of the French grapes, the story behind it and the most delicious combination with the steak!
Maybe I'll drink a Petrus one day and if not, I enjoy your story.

I was not a wine drinker. My friends father had a dinner at a French restaurant in Perth and passed around a bottle. I have no idea what it was. It was all truffles and fungus and blue vein cheese and red meat. I thought there was something wrong with it, but there was no suggestion of it being spoiled or tainted. Everything was clear and defined. I was so ignorant that I never asked what it was. I hold that as the pinnacle, right at the start of my wine appreciation. I am now a vigneron. I have never found another wine like it.

Great video and it looks like a great experience. Personally I'm still a bit sceptical about those ultra expensive wines though. I mean, as good as the overall experience was, you have rated far cheaper wines much higher and those wines could also be paired with great food.
For that price, I could have 30 or more absolutely mind blowing Premier Cru Burgundys, some things are just not worth it for me, especially if the wine itself didn't even score crazy high.

Fab video, Konstantin. Your unabashed ecstasy (yes, that word) eating that piece of meat with that amazing wine made me laugh out loud! Definitely sounded like a 100 point pairing! I was recently at a friend's table where we did a BYOB home-cooked dinner that included a 1990 Petrus, a 1985 Cheval Blanc, a 2005 Araujo Eisele Vineyard, an incredible Meursault (Arnaud Ente 1er cru La Goutte d'Or 2006) and an 1890 Georges Puig vin doux. Let me say that it was one of the best dinners i've ever been fortunate enough to be part of (and i'm in my early 60s). If i die tomorrow, i didn't go with an unsated palate. In that sterling company, the Petrus was not the wine of the night - in my opinion, it was the 1890 vin doux. But for days afterwards, the only bottle anyone was buzzing about was the Petrus, as if we'd kissed the Pope's ring. So even compared to an aged Cheval Blanc, a $1,700 bottle of white burgundy and a 132 year old fortified wine, the mystique of Petrus reigns supreme. Yes, it was a beautiful drink at the time. But as the years go on, i have a feeling that it will be even more yummy!

I really enjoyed this video! Petrus truly has reached ridiculous prices, here I am watching this video while sipping my Guigal Cote Du Rhone. But I guess you’re right, you’re buying a mythical experience and it’s hard to put a price tag on that. A few friends and I recently pooled together some money for a bottle of Petrus and we’ll be sharing it on a special occasion. I just hope it isn’t corked!!!

Thanks for sharing this experience with us, Konstantin!
The most special wine I ever had is a 1850 Verdelho Madeira wine which my wife and I bought while on the island for our honeymoon and opened for our anniversary. Not only was the experience of drinking the wine amazing, bringing back wonderful memories of a particular time and place, but the wine itself was the best I have ever tasted. After over 150 years in oak, the trademark nutty flavors you often taste in Madeira were transformed and concentrated into the most rich and delicious espresso you've ever had!
Interestingly, despite the wine in that bottle pre-dating the invention of the automobile and the publication of On the Origin of the Species, it cost only half of what your 2004 Petrus goes for. Proof, I suppose, that the biggest factor that determines price is what someone is willing to pay!

I like watching you describe and enjoy each of your experiences. While each of them is special, some are remembered more than others! It mostly depends on the context and the energy in the room, not just on the juice inside the bottle. My biggest wine experience this year was with a Savagnin (ouillé) by FRANÇOIS ROUSSET-MARTIN. The energy in the juice was absolutely fantastic. That's what I'm now looking for: the energy in the wine and also outside the bottle. Food pairing is definitely important in my opinion, you should talk about it more! Great wines sublime the cuisine and make it an unforgettable memory. To me, the best wines are just like an outstanding service staff in a 3* restaurant: at first you don't notice it, then you can't live without it. EDIT: 2 years later I'd say the biggest wines I've ever had were made by ALLANTE & BOULANGER. JURA JURA JURA.

I love and collect Bourgogne and a few years ago had a spectacular dinner in Copenhagen featuring DRC. The 2004 Montrachet was very good but I think other producers (Lafon) do a better job for considerably less money. The 1996 RC however, was otherworldly. The intense, complex flavors were almost overwhelming, but difficult to separate. A small sip would silkily coat your mouth and produce a zen-like satisfaction, alive and fecund. The finish lasted two days.

I've tasted Romanee Conti, La Tache, St Vivant and numerous other "cult wines" when I served wine. But the thing is, the rush of the service, the stress of messing up the wine service in some way (e.g. the breaking of the cork, spilling when pouring on a WHITE table cloth, slippy hands when handling glasswares/ even the bottle, negative reactions of the host/ guests upon tasting when they acted on your advice), the crowded room and noises and all sorts of activities happening...it wasn't an enjoyment at all. lol To be able to sit down and assess and enjoy a dream wine is a totally different thing.

The greatest wines I had until today were Château Cos D’Estournel 2000 and Château Figeac 2000. I was able to enjoy them in a restaurant for a very great price, I guess they bought the bottles en primeur and stored them well in their cellar.
But the greatest wine experience I had was I a small charming wine restaurant. The owner, also a Master of Wine, suggested a bottle of Château Moulin Haut-Laroque 2010. He got the bottle from his cellar. He told us, that we have to wait about 20 minutes and he would prepare the wine. It was such a great experience when he brought the wine just “at the point” best temperature and best airing … the first smell in my noise did give me a big smile in my face and I knew “that will be a great evening” 😁

The wine that changed the way I thought about wine was Domaine Heitz-Lochardet La Maltroie Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru 2019.
It stood on my palate for a good five to ten minutes after tasting it, and the aromas were so focused I could distinctly identify more than five flavours of very different kinds. It was in that moment that I realised just how much an outstanding wine can offer; it blew my mind away by bringing down all the limits I thought existed. One day I'll get my hands on a full bottle (it was just a WSET tasting sample) and I will walk into the glass as someone who comes back to an old spiritual place of his past.

Too much complexity to be understood with my tiny wine skills. But you can feel the greatness of it. The most special wine for me is that wine everyone can drink with special people. The family and friends. This is my philosophy, which is the opposite of the philosophy standing behind that wine. Quality wine is something which I insist but this is not the point. It is all about with who you’re sharing the wine and not the wine itself. A bottle can’t be more special than the people with who you are drinking it.
