Mark Making with Mixed Media

- ⭐️ Mark making as a mixed media art practice ⭐️
This week I am exploring mark making and the importance it has in making any type of artistic expression.
Here’s why mark-making is important - it allows you to explore, push boundaries and develop the creative spirit. Marks can create texture, depth, and movement in a piece, whether on canvas or copy paper.
Plus, mark-making is a great way to add your own personal touch to your artwork - true story - no two people ever make the exact same marks. How cool is that?!
So, whether you're a professional artist or someone who loves to paint paper like me, mark-making will help you grow your skills and confidence.
Quote of the week: “just try things!”

"Just try things" is the theme in this video - would you try the spaghetti thing?
I definitely will.
Absolutely, I thought I was creative with found objects, but I'll never look at leftover spaghetti the same now.
@@KathyBrooksArt It really was delightfully fun!
OMG.....I am totally thrilled finding your videos!....you are so inspiring....ps... would definitely try ALL the leftovers......😂
That was amazing!
Love this! I'm with you - play!!!
Thanks Geri! I think creative play is the answer to so many things 🥰
I really admire the fact that you stand as you create. I can’t even imagine trying that, but wish I could.
Thanks, Millana! I'm grateful that I can stand when I work. My table is very tall, so standing is required. 🥰
So glad I saw this video. I struggle with doing mark makings. This helped so much. Never would have thought to use noodles!
The noodles were so fun to use, Debbie. I hope you give them a try! 🥰
We artists really see things differently, don't we? I don't think regular people would see as much beauty in marks as we do.
So true Siobhan, so true 💜
Not only the beautiful marks and color and lines but for me as well is the texture and feel of the paper! The sounds they make when using different techniques and varieties!! Is that just me?
@@carynpercell8979 Nope, it's me too 😍
@@carynpercell8979nope, not just you. I love, love the sound of crinkly paper (especially after painting), and even the feel of old paper 💜
Needed this tutorial today! Yes inspired to try the mark making and texture from tree bark and other items. I pick up colors of bark, eucalyptus. Love the rubbing technique too!
YAY - inspiration from nature is the best - have fun with it! Thank you for watching Marie 😀
"...like knitting for artists...," I loved that comment. I also knit and repetitive mark making, like knitting, takes me to a relaxing flow state that I love. I've just discovered you recently and love your presentation style and methods you are sharing. Making art is how I play and relax and you radiate that joy in your videos. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Thank you for saying such kind things, Kim. I'm so happy you're here. 🥰
Jackie, this is really inspiring especially the leftover spaghetti. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Viivian - this was such a fun day in the studio! 🥰
Creative use of spaghetti! I enjoyed the music; nice accompaniment to mark making!
Thank you, Phoebe! 🥰
This is a breath of fresh air. I love your process conversation. Mark making is like brainstorming in writing. This is particularly helpful to me to watch as I am working with teens this summer at an art camp. Many of them come in sleepy and this is a great idea just to get them started. Is there a way to see what you did with all these pieces?
Thank you Stephanie - I really appreciate your kind words. I agree that this style of creating would be awesome for sleepy teens 😀. I would love to show you what I did with these pieces, but I haven't used them yet. As soon as I do I'll include them in a video.
What a fun video. Love the jazz too. Wood bark is mesmerizing for me too. 😊
Thank you Ingrid 😀 Wood bark has so much fascinating detail. Thanks for watching!
Strange isn't it ..... I absolutely loathe jazz. I try not to but ..... eugghhhh... I simply can't. Sorry 😢
I smiled at the spaghetti too. All good fun!
😂😂😂
Love the one from your journal that has what looks like asemic writing. Really neat!
Thanks Robin! The whole video was so much fun 🥰
White cheapie coffee filters are great to use as paper too for stamping, painting and marking on, I get them from the dollar store or Amazon Basics.
Great tip! I’ll have to get some and start experimenting 🥰
I always enjoy dropping in at your studio, watching you express yourself with paint and mark making. Thanks for your time and creative energy.
And I always love having you back, Cheryl! 🥰
Loved seeing your smile as you brought out the spaghetti! Very fun and creative!
Glad you enjoyed it - I nearly edited the goofy reaction out, but you know what, I really do react like that when I'm in the studio. Let me know if you ever give the spaghetti a try 💜
Hello Jackie, So glad that I found you! Great ideas, very grateful. Best to you, Sondra Borrie
Hi Sondra - nice to meet you! Thank you for your kind words and for being here. 🥰
I'm looking forward to seeing how you use all these lovely painted & marked up papers.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this, especially the ‘leftovers’ segment 😊
It should be hilarious to see what I try using for the next "leftovers" segment! Thank you for watching Bev 😀
Mmm. I'm thinking dry Rigatoni sort of bunched together! Fun!
Ohhhhhhhhh - if you do it, Erica -you have to let me know how it turns out!
This is also my calm. I love your art!
You are very kind, Sheila, thank you. 🥰
I'm really digging these exercises. I'm on a years block. I feel exploring may help. Thank you.
I'm so glad you like them, and I'm sure exploration will help to chip away at the block. Be sure to let me know it goes for you 😀
Love what you have demonstrated here. I look forward to more leftovers demo’s. What a great idea.
Thank you Chapman, more to come!
This looks like fun and you sound like it feels like fun to you! Have fun!!!
I am silly in the fun that I have. I am so happy you are here and that you get my excitement! 🥰
This video made me just so happy! I love my mark making sessions and watching how happy and playful you are in this video. Just made my Saturday. Thank you for sharing how you play and experiment. It was easy to feel how you enjoyed the process 😍Now I am so up for a session with mark making🥰
This comment makes me so happy! I hope you did get to do some mark making today 🥰
Very inspiring!!! I need this! Don't stop! Love the spaghetti idea....can't wait to see what you come up with next!....and keep talking too! Go, Girl....!!!!!
Oh my goodness - thank you Catherine! I promise I won't stop any time soon (and it's hard to get me to stop talking 😂).
I loved seeing your process! Especially the branch and the wide brush, such great effects 😍
Thank you very much, Sarah - that was one of the most fun days of painting I've every experienced. I'm so happy you enjoyed it. 🥰
Thanks!
Kim, thank you very much for your generosity - Happy New Year! 🥰
How much fun!
Thank you Linda!
Really enjoyed watching this.Textures from nature are fab.Loved the pasta.😍
Thank you, Lorraine - whenever I take a walk I'm looking for new textures out in nature. One of these days, I'm going to walk right into traffic while I'm looking up at the trees 😂🥰
Now that is what i call fun!
Thank you, Vanessa - and I agree 100%!
Awesome, how fun !
It really is - thank you for watching 😀
Super fun play ❤❤❤
Inspiring! So happy I found you thru your cookbook video. Will turn a cookbook my Mom gave to her BFF that she inscribed with such a wonderful dedication to their friendship that even though I don’t want the recipes I can’t part with it!! Turning it into a photo memory/art journal of their friendship is priceless. Went on to watch this video and can’t begin to tell you how inspiring. Wishing much success with your video making! Thank you.
Linda - thank you so much for your kind words. What a beautiful way to honor your mother's friendship, and your creative muse. Your cookbook journal is sure to become a family treasure 🥰
That's a really nice afternoon in my dictionary! Lovely work! Can't wait to see you using this papers in finished peaces.
I agree, the very best way to spend and afternoon. Thank you for watching Ana Paula 💜
Hi Jackie, I do share your joy of painting on paper and have also kept packaging papers… will go more crazy with it now having seen your Mark making days😍🇩🇰
I love hearing that, Susana - my (not so) secret goal with this channel is to help people experience the joy of simply creating. So glad you're here! 🥰
Needed this tutorial today! Yes inspired to try the mark making and texture from tree bark and other items. I pick up colors of bark, eucalyptus. Love the rubbing technique too!
I'm so happy you enjoyed it, Stacy! Have fun playing around with it 🥰
Thank you so much for sharing , so playful and inspiring.
Thank you Janet, that mean a lot💜
I love the noodle marks. Fun!
Thank you Linda, I thought they were really fun too! 🥰
Loving your videos! Appreciate your enthusiasm and excitement! Thank you! 💕💕💕
Thank you Tina - appreciate your kind words and for watching 😀
I love watching you work! And your excitement and enthusiasm!😊 So looking forward to see how you use with all your paints papers. ❤
Thank you Francie - I do get pretty excited 💜
Your channel is such a joy and inspiration. Thank you!
Thank you very much, MaryLou! 💜
Luv this happy vibe!
Thank you, Marguerite! 🥰
Actually lived there marks the spaghetti made, reminded me very much of oriental (sumi?) painting .
I can see that Lynette! Thank you for being here 🥰
Some great ideas! Thanks! My favorite is the journal page idea. Oh, and the typed page. Just imagine what I might find at a resale store!
One good trip to the resale store could potentially give you all the paper you could ever need to paint on. Enjoy 😀
I loved this video and your approach to mark making! You really spoke to me as I find myself collecting natural elements on my walks to use in making mark. I love textures and I’ve been exploring finding my marks. Thank you for this, I look forward to seeing more of what you do.
I'm so happy you stumbled upon on this video and that it connected with you 💜
Thank you so much Jackie, I really really enjoyed watching you creating all these amazing marks. And that spaghetti at the end is fantastic and fabulous. I’ve subscribed and given you a thumb’s up too. Please stay safe and well too
Thank you so much for your kind words Cyril, and I appreciate your support. Happy painting 😀
Ohhh, I LOVE love love your mark making! Can’t wait to try a lot of these ideas today. First time to your channel and I’m hooked 😁. Thanks for sharing your creativity!
Hi Wendy, and welcome. I'm so happy this was your first video, it was so much fin to make. Thank you for being here! 🥰
Love your video, you randomly appeared in my feed! I see just about everything as a mark making tool and yes, I would do spaghetti! I love getting packaging, love found objects and I have to feel trees and rocks! There are so many things to discover and play with and I love that you reminded me to do a rubbing on bark with graphite! Thank for the inspiration!💕from🇨🇦
Cindy, we sound like soul sisters 🥰 Thank you so much for watching, and taking the time to let me know what you thought.
@@PaintedPaperStudio we sure do, I will be watching more of your videos for sure!
Loved this video! was trying to think of ideas for additional mark making. i did spehgetti with the kiddos recently, they loved it and so did I! Thank you!
So happy you did this with your kids! I think it's a fun way for them to explore their creativity, and get great results at the same time 🥰
I need to do more of this kinda play. I really do. All your ideas are fab, esp the spaghetti doodle! Now I'm thinking.. hmm.. egg noodles are thinner than spag.. what if..? lol!
Your video was meant to inspire - and it def worked for me. Thanks so much!
YES! Get out the egg noodles, ramen noodles, even the pool noodle and get to work - it is so much fun 🥰
Great video 😁 TFS 💗
I love the receptacle you use at about 8mins into the video, it looks like a very cool paint tray - can you share where you got it please. Thanks for your videos -super fun and chock full of ideas!
I love those little trays, Angie, but I can't find them anywhere now. I bought them about 25 years ago at Home Depot and I still have a couple left. Maybe a dedicated paint store would have them? Thank you very much for being here! 🥰
Well that was fun!
Liz! I'm so happy you enjoyed the video. I'm a fan of your art and have been watching for a long time. Congrats on what's been happening on your channel recently 😍 🎉
Oh thank you!! I want to go to my studio now, but it's raining so much I can't face going outside @@PaintedPaperStudio
Love your artwork ❤
Thank you Deborah! 🥰
Hurray! It already made me happy to watch you! making marks. What would it be like if I did it myself? I can´t wait, to try it out. The noodles were my highlight! Your mark making was also courage making. Thanks so much 🥰
Thank you Britta - this was such a lovely note to wake up to! I hope you have as much fun exploring and experimenting as I do. 💜
Muchas gracias! Me encantaron tus trabajos!!!!
¡De nada y estoy muy feliz de que estés aquí, Maria Laura! 🥰
Love this video ❤ sorta sad that “spaghetti” isn’t listed in your supplies used 😂 can’t wait to try it we usually have leftover noodles and no sauce and now I have a use!
Oh no! I didn't mean to slight the noodles - I've fixed that now 😍 Thank for watching Dakota!
I love how the spaghetti turned out! Though I was concerned that there would be expiry issues with the finished art (no clue if it leaves some gluten or butter/oil on the page) so now I'll be on the hunt for some extra skinny monkey noodles (sensory toy)! So glad UA-cam recommended your video to me.
You bring up great questions! The spaghetti I used had nothing on it, no oils or butter, so I don't think there will be a problem, but I'll wait a while to use it to see what happens. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment 🥰
Why not just use string, yarn etc that can be reused vs food?
I need to get some posca pens. I tried using sharpie pens and the acrylic paint wrecks those.
Yes - I had the same experience! I love the Poscas - I keep one in my purse and leave little thank you notes/words of encouragement/jokes on the bathroom mirrors of my friends and family. 🥰
Just found you!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm so glad you did Linda! 💜
Thank you for the very creative inspiration . I would never have entertained the idea of spagetti as a tool. 😊yes, i will try all you suggestions.
Lisa, everything is fair game in the studio 😂 I'm happy you enjoyed the video. 🥰
I just loved this video it made me feel so happy, I can’t wait to have a go. What sort of paper do you use? It looks quite thin.
I'm so glad it made you happy, Christine! I’m not sure which paper you are referring to, but here are all the papers I used in this video: newsprint, rice paper, tissue paper, deli paper, and a piece of paper from one of my journals. All the supplies can be found in the description of the video. Thank you for being here 🥰
I think it must have been the newsprint. Thank you.
Wow, the spaghetti was amazing!!
Right?! So much fun - I hope you give it a try 🥰
What’s the little ‘scrubbing’ board attached to your paint supply?
Hi Anne - could you give me a timestamp for the 'scrubbing board?' I made this video a long time ago, and I'm not sure which tool you're referring to. 🥰
🥰 [Google Translate]
When you brought out the spaghetti, I felt like we were kindred spirits. ❤
Love that, Darcy! Have you ever tried it?
@@PaintedPaperStudio not yet. 😉
@@DarcysMixedMedia When...if...you do, be sure to let them set up in the refrigerator. Let the gluten make them stick together. This way, you can grab a handful without them falling out like worms. *wink *
@PaintedPaperStudio thanks for the tip. And FYI: dry ramen might look like a cool texture, but it's a fail on the gel plate.
❤
❤️
I'll never look at my spaghetti the same way again😄
Exactly! Thank you for being here Elle 😀
I loved all of your mark- making ideas. But, the spaghetti was 🧑🍳 🤌
🥰 Was that chef's kiss? 🥰 I can't tell you how much fun I had that day!
@@PaintedPaperStudio That’s absolutely what it was. 😉 I could tell you were definitely in your flow. It’s fun to see another artist enjoying their process. 😊
EEEEK! A wood pile up against a house is an invitation for termites.
Dawna - you're probably right but I love it. Maybe I'm the first Airbnb for termites 😂
👍🌸🌸🌸
cooked spaghetti as a creative tool, how wonderful!
I have to say, Lena - that was an incredible fun experiment - I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🥰
But, Jackie, didn't your mama tell you not to play with your food?😁
She did, but I was never very good at following directions 😂🥰
I have so much enjoyed watching your videos!
But most admit that the background music on this one was really irritating and distracting :-(. Unfortunately no way to mute the music without muting you too …… so I stopped watching about 1/2 way ….. sadly
Hi SK - I'm sorry you couldn't watch the whole thing - that was the second video I ever made, and thought I was "supposed" to put music in (it's what all the cool kids do 😂). Several people wrote to me and I stopped using music in the background for majority of my videos. You will hear it in my voiceless videos or if there is an extended amount of silent working time, or if I use time lapse. The good news is that I have closed captioning on every video, so if the sound is bad, there's that. Thank you for letting me know your thoughts. 🥰
