I wanted an external monitor for my laptop and DSLR. So I show you how I took apart an old HP laptop and created a portable monitor from its screen. I mounted the monitor to a piece of acrylic and bought the correct controller and screwed it to the back side. I have a standard laptop power input and an XT-60 power connector for a Li-Po battery, which I use when I'm away. It's great!
Any and all STL Files for this project are now available for download on my website! I also apologize for the Anakin quote. It was something of a running joke at work, because hey, how often do things actually work perfectly on the first try? I'm big on movie quotes, so... yeah. You'll come across one frequently. Even bad ones.I'm also so sorry about the audio issues. It's far too late now to do anything about it, and I certainly understand all your frustration, but I sure appreciate your sticking with me on this one.

Hi.after seeing your videos I got an idea of making android TV from broken android device and connecting it to DIY laptop screen.
i have the exact same monitor from a HP here. Just wondering why not leave the TFT enclosed in its original black housing. This way the hinges can be reused and its better protected for cleaning the front side.
Sir , i have one doubt for that how can i ping you
can you share me one controller as, I am not getting sure, and I wish the same controller which you have.
Trapped in the 80's and building modern tech
Lol
Ya....me too

This dude been travelling back to the future. Nice demo perfect instruction!
The man put in his time and effort to provide this information. You didn't pay anything for
it, so don't complain about the content.
Great work Mike, and thank you.
Please keep it up!
I am paying with my time and he is receiving popularity.
I'm impressed, a very clean and good job.
"you can see it's really not that hard at all"
Zamma123 Here's a more straight forward and easy to follow tutorial that this video looks like it was based off of:

Loool
Lol
very sad :(
Zamma123 the most important about it
Thanks for the tips. Just salvaged my old HP screen tonight and found your video! This will be helpful
Awesome, Mike. Thanks for sharing!!! Very nice design!
I'm only half way through the video and your portable secondary screen looks incredibly similar to a pc monitor!
Good thing you had all those fancy tools to save you from having to buy another monitor!
That's actually a really good design, I've been sitting here for 5 minutes trying to work out how I was going to build mine, this is a really versatile and best of all portable design. I'll be hopefully using a small step up converter so I can run mine off a 2a usb plug though. Thanks for the inspiration
Hmm a USB step up to 12v sounds nice. So I can power it up via my desktop computer, via a USB charger, or via a USB power bank.
Good job bro. I have an old lab top at the house that I couldn't see myself throwing out. (I'm very frugal) thanks for the hard work.
Thanks Mike! I appreciate the method and the insight, looks great!
Good luck on the death-ray.
Really solid advice here. Will defo try this out!!
"You can see that building an external monitor is really as simple as buying a controller and plugging it in...... as smart as this video is Mike, I think that this build is slightly more difficult than plugging a controller in.
awesome build by the way
it actually is that simple. You kinda just need to know what to buy. What was kinda of glossed over in this video was getting the right power connector and power supply. I had a lcd monitor and controller sitting on my desk for a few weeks because I didn't have the right charger. Got one now, tho
that's awesome! I'be been meaning to try this project out for my work laptop.
Great ideia, and your presentation was straight to the point.
Mike, this is excellent and I look forward to building one of these. The parts acquisition was what I was missing.
Thanks dude, this is what I needed to know. I'm going to put a desktop inside a briefcase and had a few laptop screens lying around.
Nice work, a must build for myself, thanks.
Depending on the laptop you use for this you can sometimes reuse all or part of the original screen casing/frame(i don't know what it's called). It probably won't fit the controller but considering you have to build something anyway, modifying it can be easier.
Thanks for the tips Cheers Simon
I just thought about this and was sure that someone had already done it. Thanks Mike for be the pioneer for me. 😎 I have loads of dead laptops that I will use to do this too.
This is soo cool!! Great job!!
Thanks for video, is truly a good starting guide for me with my plan of building a smart mirror .
Thanks, very good info will try making one.
I enjoyed your video. It was very helpful. Thank you!
I’m so glad I saved all the components of my laptops, now let’s get to thinking along with this video to help :)
loved watching this
looks Cool... keep up the COol work
Subscribed. Only wanted to figure out how to reuse my laptop screen, but this was more than I expected.
Nice work!
Cool project man always wanted to try
Excellent video, to the point! Very useful tips for my own project.
Thanks JP! Good luck on yours. Glad you got some inspiration.
Very good video showing how to reuse that hp monitor. I do have same hp laptop and I don't use it cause is too old. You gave me great ideas.
Thank you.
“ oh and for the heck of it, i also installed a quadcore multisonic triptomonitor for holographic imaging technology” cool!
Great DIY
Excellent video.
Absolutely awesome Job Sheldon (Cooper). Looking forward to your death ray tutorial ;-)
Damnn Mike. Very thorough, inspirational and interesting.
Great video!!!
New subscriber!
Glad to hear it. Thanks Brandon.
Wow my model was 01,& your model 02.what a co-incidence
amazing work very good stuff
Brilliant idea. You made a breat job. :)
Good Job!!
thnaks mike, saving this
Awsome sir.
subscribed, definitely inspired to follow an innovative mind
I have seen at least 3 other videos about making a portable monitor from old laptops and I have to say your build is the cleanest and best looking. I have one old laptop which I can actually use to make a portable monitor but the process is too complicated.
Thanks! I did go to a bit of extra trouble to make it look as nice as I could. I still use it as my teleprompter screen.
"Im saving disk platters so I can build a telescope or a death ray"
3:49 Never forget Murphy's Fourth Law. 'When you make something idiot proof, they will make a better Idiot'.
yeah, nothing is idiot proof. hell i'd manage to somehow build a nuclear reactor and blow myself up somehow...
Nice video- well made and thoroughly explained. Thanks! New sub here too
2:20 Jeeeeeeeeez you woke up the dead. Nice video by the way. I've made something similar but I don't have these many views. mine is powered by USB type C, and another one can be powered by both type c and 12V. Also, they have room to store the cables.
nice to watch
I took this exact laptop apart yesterday with the intention to make an external monitor of it and have now been recommended this video. HOW DO YOU KNOW UA-cam
Hey Jack! How about that?! Have you seen the movie "The Social Dilemma"? UA-cam knows everything about us.
man oh my, you are a genius
Most downvotes probably are a response to having to quickly lower the audio volume when "it's working, it's working" tears up the speakers.
That being said, thanks for the video.
Thanks to your channel, I solved a problem where LCD controller board (ext. monitor) and laptop have their own power supply. So, I branched my laptop's adapter cable, one line to laptop (19 V), while the other one to external monitor using step-down XL4015 CC/CV (12V-1A). Previously, I used LM2596 (CV), but the module exploded due to overheat. It's my first time did some project like this.
Seems like one need to have whole factory ! To build this
you are a born innovator.
Thank you very much.
Gonna give this a try, I will update when I do so.
Dude you are amazing
Awesome.
Great habilit.
Thank you sir
Sound and video came out from 90's.
From the Sir G display to the keyboard, you can find long wires to connect the display and keyboard
why my first thought this is video from 90' advertisement or something
LOL, me too. He seems out of one of those 90's infomercials
It does but I love it
not sure if mike will see this, but i would LOVE a google doc for the 3D models he used to accomplish this, especially the corner clamps and standoffs. been wanting to do a project like this with 3 old laptops, and being able to duplicate the process this easily would make it go by so much easier/smoother.
Hi! I looked all over my computer and I cannot find the files anywhere. It looks like I got rid of them, which is so unlike me, and it's now got me worried what else is missing... Sorry, but thanks for watching!
@@MikesInventions hey, it was a shot in the dark, haha! regardless, thanks for taking the time and looking looking!
Superb
Great video :)
Nice! I have a bunch of old laptops I plan to use for projects like this. How is the death ray coming along?
How would I do this with a touch screen monitor and keep the touch screen on desktop motherboard.
perfect I like This work
Thank you for the video. Subcribed.
hi, this great, thanks. something i didn't catch is, would the touch screen work? thanks in advance for any help on this.

How to connect a 1inch 6bit 40 pin laptop screen(LP156WH2)...?
How to give LED Backlight...?
me encanto, construire la mia en base a tus consejos muchas gracias, saludos desde chile
Tell me more about this telescope from HDD platters...
Nice video
Transparency adds to the LCDs true image quality. Good monitor choice. If you sell an A.K. Post link. I'm trying to add my Deloreans Plutonium using windows 10 to a first gen Xbox console shell.
Nice vid bro
Hey! Thanks again Murray. Put one of these in your geodesic dome. ;-)
You had me at micro aquaponic system
Awesome video thanks. I think I have the same laptop Hp Dv6?
Hi, I've seen similar videos in which they use Step UP modules. I still don't understand what would be the difference of using one or the other. Great video as usual. :)
I have a broken IBM X201 tablette, and i want to make a wifi graphical with it amd using an Arduino mega + wifi module, would you have an idea on how to do so?
This man was the last person to ever be seen inside a radio shack in 2017
Hey Mike cool video! I'm thinking of doing something like this to have a mobile monitor for my macbook. I'm wondering if you could explain a little more about pass through power or if you know where I could find information relating specifically to my 2017 macbook pro with usb type c ports. Thanks.
Hey Davidson, I haven't had a Macbook in many years. Back then, it had a magnetic 4 pin connector. I'd love to help if I can. Let's discuss over e-mail. Mike@MikesInventions.com
i thought you had a struggle in your video so i subscribed to your channel
Para la próxima podrías mostrar más el resultado final . nice you video
saludos desde Venezuela
Amazing, I was wondering if i could use my old portable dvd player for the same...is it possible?
Hi Friend, I liked your project, let me ask you a question, is that possible to do that with a touch screen LCD painel and continue using the touch?
Whats the response time like? I'm thinking of making one so i don't have to use my tv for games, and was wondering if this process has any type of impact on the response time. Thanks
build a death ray!! will those controllers / control boards work with screens with CCFLs, or only LED Backlights? Thank you for your great video! that video cable that connects to the upper jack, on the back top of the screen, that came with the controller? Thanks
Thank you
I ordered wrong model touch display for HP laptop and no option to return ( HP envy x360 AQ15 )
I wonder if I can use for raspberry pi as a tablet PC
Kindly advice
What type of corner clips did you use? Do you have a source or supplier for them?
Hey , if i want to put my old laptop as a power backup then how to connect battery to the lcd screen further i can charge also ... pls make a video or send some pic of idea .. Thanks
This feels like something from the early 2000s to 1990s
