My only issue is the use of electrical tape rather than proper shrink tubing. Shrink tubing can easily be had in a variety of sizes and in assortment packs. Smaller circuit boards can also be encased in it and the ends crimped shut with pliers whilst the tubing is still warm if that look is desired. It looks, insulates and holds up much better than tape!

Be careful when re-using laptop battery cells. It's extremely important to check the internal resistance, self-discharge rate, remaining capacity, and whether or not they heat up when charging. I re-purpose li-ion cells from old laptop batteries all the time, and have tested probably 250+ cells at this point. The last thing you should do is just stick it in a charger if the voltage is still "good" without properly testing the cell first for safety. I had a few Sanyo cells the other day, took them out of the pack, checked the voltage. 3.86V. I though "Great! These are still good!", that is, until I ran them through a Liitokala Engineer lii-500 to check their remaining capacity...During the initial charge cycle the temperature SHOT up at ~4V. They must have been 75 degrees C or more, I could barely handle them. So please, if you're reading this, be careful. While the majority of old cells MAY be safe, it's imperative to check them first before re-use. Imagine you gave a power bank to your little brother/sister or cousin and later found out they were burned or worse? Take the precaution of checking them properly, it's so important guys.
You can easily do this with common tools. It just won't be as pretty. Well, there are ways to do it with a chisel and drill if you are accurate enough, etc.

The backlit panel would also be extremely useful useful for astrophotography calibration frames when stacking images of nebulae, galaxies, star clusters, etc.

You know, I came back to watch this again for whatever reason and I just like that you aren’t pretentious, and you show what you did. For some things that are difficult, you offer easy alternatives as well.
Fantastic DIY suggestions that you actually COULD do yourself! The one thing I'd like to see covered that wasn't, though, is how to repurpose an internal DVD/RW drive into a standalone one. This would be especially useful, since newer laptops no longer include optical drives, and those almost never went bad in old laptops. Please include this in one of your next videos!
If the laptop has a DVD/RW and was made about 2010 or so. The DVD/RW drive is SATA drive with the micro connector. You can get a micro SATA to usb adaptor.
Small improvement on the laser view meter: Mount the entire hard-drive on a small fan that you voluntarily force to vibrate. Either brake one of the fan blade or glue some weight. This will create the vertical scan while the music is still displayed as an horizontal line. The effect is similar to using a scope but nicer because the scan is symmetrical. What you see is nice Lissajous figures depending on the frequency content of the music.
120 thumbs up, my most popular comment on youtube. My first experience of a similar way to display music was using an old color TV. There was still a few vacuum tube, in particular a large one with metal cap on top to rectify 25 kv and a bigger one for pulsing at 15 KHz to produce horizontal scan an the high voltage +25 kv. The CRT was 26 inches, diagonal. It was the old style with the phosphor being dots, not vertical stripes. It used dynamic convergence with 3 electromagnets close to the deflection 'yoke'. A PCB with 16 adjustable resistors allowed to adjust how much current is used to stir each color mostly near the 4 corners. I disconnected both horizontal and vertical wire from the yoke (like the science fiction pretend: don't adjust your tv, we control the horizontal and vertical... I used a 6 volt transformer, connected it on the horizontal wires of the yoke. I connected the vertical to an amplifier, in parallel with the speaker. Result: Same as with this laser, except: because of the dynamic convergence, trying to force the red, green and blue to center, the 3 colors were separated but followed similar path. The music was illustrated with these 3 intense, saturated, colors. Using a more recent CRT, we need to use magnets near the neck to force the color to separate. Otherwise, the convergence is so good that we just see a more boring white trace. It is hard to keep the color saturated in every parts of the screen. Modern CRT are just too good at keeping the 3 colors well aligned with the shadow mask.
@@HAWXLEADER problem is the protocol. I can't remember if it was this guy but there was a video about reusing old laptop cameras, the camera itself uses 4 wires that actually follow USB protocol so you can even plug it into a regular computer USB. Cell phone cameras, however, have a completely different set of protocols, both hardware and software with many different pinouts and methods of connecting to a host device. Some cameras like the one for the Google Pixel have sufficient documentation and even have interface boards, however you'll need to do a lot of research to find which one will work. In addition, if you're using it as a USB type webcam then you may be limited by the speed of the USB protocol itself. This is why some cameras for high demand applications (think industrial and manufacturing uses like machine vision) use "Ethernet" cables because of the higher bandwidth and greater reliability.
There's a program on android called IP Webcam, and you can use an older smartphone as a motion activated security camera. It also works with a cloud backup service for $4 a month. You can also put one of those clipon fish-eye lenses on it.
@@pleaseadjustyourtracking6330 I used IP webcam for a few weeks on an older phone and the device kept overheating, bugging out and eventually turning off. After just those few weeks (few hours a day usage) my battery life went down to one fifth of what it used to be. Its possible to use smartphone cameras as webcams, but in general they were not designed to be used for longer periods, especially while the phone is transmiting that video feed. You can run Addictive Drums 1.5, pretty good drum VST on hardware like Acer Aspire One. With proper sound card, you can even do basic multitrack music recording on it, and i am sure you can run prettty good sounding VST piano plugins like Acoustica Pianissimo on that machine :)
how can you do this? when you view it in the system, it's typically not a real key from what i've seen, especially if the system is the one the computer came with. if you installed it and paid for a license yourself though, its a different story and yes it would be on there... care to explain? im curious how you can do this. thanks in advance .
I don't think that's "legal" (depends on where you live), Windows OEM License, the one that comes preinstalled with the device, is supposed to be usable only for that particular device, non transferable. But may still be able to be used and activated in other devices if you try, though this will be "grey" in legal context. Unless we're talking about windows Retail/FPP license we bought separately from the device, that will come in handy since we have the right to transfer the license to other devices.
@@feelsgoodmanjpg7762 gotchu, will look into that. @fathi, not tryna do anything illegal either lol. Just asking out of curiosity and for educational purposes.

I absolutely applaud you for "reuse and repurpose" and ideas that will keep old laptops out of landfills. Unfortunately this is all above my technical abilities, lol.
save your harddrives at least, the adapter pieces are very cheap and its always good to have extra storage. and they are easy to hook up with no special pieces to desktop motherboards. i'm also really bad with tech but this one i did do.
Regarding old hardware that works only on 32-bit OS: sometimes a virtual machine can be used. 32-bit VM will work fine inside 64-bit host OS, and you can redirect USB (always) and PCI (requires mobo and cpu support) to the VM. I use such setup for an old USB scanner.
@@Arti9m Not exactly. The idea is that 32bit SOFTWARE will run well in the 32bit VM...inside the 64bit host. I believe the host would still need a 64bit driver for the hardware to be functional in the VM. I could be wrong about this. I haven't dealt with this exact situation myself. Cheers!
@@PumpkinSeed17 You are wrong and kinda right. You can pass the usb device directly into the VM without having the 64 bit host machine bother with it at all. The only downside is if the hostmachine does like win10 tends to do and autoinstall a driver. Sometimes these drivers can be explicity unsopported by the OS and actually cause crashes and unstability. There are ways around this, but still something to keep in mind if you plug old devices into your pc. TL;DR: No drivers need to exist on 64 bit host for 32 bit VM.

I don't know the math on cost efficiency, but this could be a good way to make side money if you have the time and depending on the price and usability of the laptops you pick up. Potentially good for teens as it can also develop electronics skills
I have taken apart dozens of old hard drives. The magnets are handy to have around the house, and in the desert, they can be used to find meteorites. I have used the disks to make wind catchers for my wife's wind chimes that have lost them in the wind. They do keep their shine and with a sharp drill bit, you can drill a hole on the disk and run some fish line through it to tie it to the chime, a small wooden ball works to ring the the chimes as the wind twirls the disk.
Great content as always. Just a slight correction, I am a ContaCam user and if you use the motion capture and recording triggers it is extremely resource intensive. So if you plan on using the software and have a slower system please make sure you turn down the recording quality otherwise it will max out the CPU and will crash every few hours.
My grandmothewr gave me an old laptop of hers that I noticed was broken. I'm actually attempting to reuse the LCD screen to have another screen monitor, this gave me more ideas on what to do with the rest of the components :)
Whenever I get my hands on an old computer, I usually just clean it up, replace the thermal compound, replace the HDD, and put a light "windows-like" Linux distro on it, such as LXLE. If I'm in an extra good mood, and it is a desktop, I might put in like a GT 710 or an HD 6450. Then I either give them to literally anyone I know who needs a PC, or donate them.

10:30 For hard drives, even though it may be small in capacity, I use it for backups. As a developer my source code files are pretty small so space is not a concern. Availability is the main concern.
If you're a developer and the code is actually important to you, please get a new hard drive, flash storage or an SSD, old hard drives aren't the most reliable for backing up important data.
I do backup to the cloud. Encrypted and splitted into chunks of files and uploaded to the different cloud provided of course. Offline storage is only for non important things like music or movies, ISOs, or mirror repository.
Apart from the useful ideas you give on this video, i subscribe to you for being such a good person that you thought about giving an older computer to old people who would "just need to acces emails". That's exactly what we did with my grandma and she's happy to get news from family outside the country. Have a very pleasant day and please, do not change your soul for the usual common trashy ones that spread out in our modern societies. ;-) Cheers from Switzerland 👍
I haven’t thrown a laptop away since 2005, I’ve been waiting for this video to come in to my life randomly. I’ll still never do any of it, but it’s cool :)
Things anyone can make with an old dead laptop and no skill - a cup coaster, a doorstopper, a prop up for other objects, a weight, a weapon, and an old dead laptop in several broken pieces (results depend on how hard you throw or smash it)
The reason that commercial security systems tend to look awful are due to storage constraints rather than the cameras themselves. A company may need to store weeks or even months of 24 hour footage, and video takes up more space as quality increases. The kind of capacity needed for that is expensive even for businesses, especially considering one building may have dozens or even *hundreds* of security cameras, all recording at once, non-stop.
@@boxwithahat there are ways around this, like motion and light detection so its not constantly recording. this would have to be used in low traffic locations too.
The "LED Laptop Screen" can also be used as a replacement backlit keyboard. You can trigger the keyboard to work via USB and order replacement laptop keycaps that are transparent and also be used as backlit keycaps.
Save the hinges - nice for building adjustable lamps, lids, and work holders since they hold their position. You can also salvage bluetooth adapters out of some laptops, just like the webcams. Mind the voltage, some run on 3.3v instead of 5. Save the power brick and the laptop's power input jack to power a future project. Some newer laptops also have light sensors and magnetometers that sometimes can be found on little daughter boards. Also, some laptop cases are made of magnesium, which can be a fun metal to experiment with (safely).
In case you make the external monitor, the hinges will be perfect to make it adjustable. You can also try getting the WiFi chips, they might be interchangeable with a laptop that works
This was really interesting. There are so many gimmicky ways of reusing the parts, but you found some really good ones I've never seen before! Another option for older laptops that still work but are slow, is to put a minimal linux distribution on them and use them kinda like a chromebook.
@@rasaecnai with those specs I think you could run just about any distro. On the last tip (if it for some reasons hasn't been suggested yet) one should add to consider installing a Ubuntu (or derivative) OS, if considering gifting it away as an email reader/browser/writing computer for someone Some of the distros can make even a dreadfully slow old computer quite usable for simple things like that.

While a nice suggestion, this isn't always something that can be successfully removed and put in some kind of external case.
@@MatthewN8OHU Oh no! I was really hoping to be able to do that.

Small improvement on the laser view meter:
Mount the entire hard-drive on a small fan that you voluntarily force to vibrate. Either brake one of the fan blade or glue some weight. This will create the vertical scan while the music is still displayed as an horizontal line.
The effect is similar to using a scope but nicer because the scan is symmetrical. What you see is nice Lissajous figures depending on the frequency content of the music.
Christian Gingras
Mmm. Myes, indeed.

Result:
Same as with this laser, except: because of the dynamic convergence, trying to force the red, green and blue to center, the 3 colors were separated but followed similar path.
You should do something like this but for older/broken smartphones, they can have a lot of interesting uses.
I'd love to use their cameras as Webcams!!!! most webcams are utter shit while smartphone cameras are great!
Newer phones could probably handle it better than my old galaxy S6, but you should still be careful.

@@iH85CH001 with the software Windows Product Key Viewer for example
I don't think that's "legal" (depends on where you live), Windows OEM License, the one that comes preinstalled with the device, is supposed to be usable only for that particular device, non transferable. But may still be able to be used and activated in other devices if you try, though this will be "grey" in legal context.

Great idea....if you can find 64bit drivers for your old device. :)
The idea is that 32-bit drivers work fine on 32-bit VM that is running inside 64-bit host.
Cheers!
I hope I'm wrong and if so, I'm sorry for the the misinformation.

I LOVE THE CREATIVITY THE MIND YOU PUT IN PROJECTS. INSTEAD OF THROWING THINGS IN TRASH PEOPLE LIKE YOU TEACH US HOW REUSE THEM AND SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT.
बहुत खूब आपने बहुत अच्छा काम किया है चीजों का सही इस्तेमाल किया है अपनी कल्पनाशीलता का बहुत अच्छा उदाहरण दिया है

This guy: I made a microphone out of a laptop that's actually good.
Headset companies: I'm going to pretend I didn't see that.
cheap chinese lavalier microphones are 2$ a pop on aliexpress and most of the time their quality rivals "professional hardware" worth hundreds.

buying gamer headsets is a meme
Stop buying Chinese products aka communist takeover
Buy American all the way
@@jeaneleretford4635 damn we really be funding the next hitler with our $2 microphones huh

I'm using very old laptop as home library for digital documents, private projects, e-books etc. I have two more old laptops for IT training.
Great video!
You edited the mic part so well, that people can't even notice the difference between the reused mic and your recording mic. Good job.
Nape Riggers I mean he did say that he uses an old laptop mic for his recording mic also sooo I mean

@@maryroberts6311 Similar situations here. I have about 5 old laptops that I never use. Wish I had half the know-how or tools required to do a couple of these projects.
This guy taught me more in 20 mins then my farther did in 18 years.
Sorry tô ear that
Jayzibbit cropper than not then
keep bragging about having a dad
Well, you just proved that [he: "father"?] didn't teach you well. :-)
That is funny as hell... and sad... lol
You can also use the hard drive mirrored disk as a tool to drill perpendicularly into anything, as a mirror helps greatly to better see the angle of your drillbit. A mechanician friend use this trick quite often.
This is like a 'life hack' video that is actually useful. He even says when one of the ideas is a little silly but still worth mentioning. Nice video!
Beware: this may void your warranty.
What warranty?

LMAO ! ;)
"may" void your warranty, lol!

Really impressive, it's so important to repurpose old things rather than put them in a landfill! Keep the good work going!
Dude! There can't be a better DIY Vid to reuse old laptops, I'm definitely not skipping any ads, you deserve it bro.
These old laptops: exist
My school: state of the art technology!

Give it to a much older person

That's precisely why you're giving it away! You don't know how to work on it or what to do with it.
there's no such thing as an "old af laptop" you young fuckers are on an impulse scaled timeline, and have no concept or value of what's old.
So I Was Fixing My Room And Those Speaker DIY are very *LIT* man i even added led strips to sync with the current music playing
