I'm so glad I found this video and your older one. my laptop which cost me 3k is dying from heat and a lack of new parts, so, I've been wracking my brain thinking if it's possible to make a desktop from it seeing as I have a rtx 2080 and i9. and you've just proven its doable and relatively straight forward too. Thanks for the thoroughly well explained video!

Ik this was a while ago, but try and look into your fans.
I had the same issue, thermal throttling everywhere on everything, games I shoulda stomped not running even relatively well etc etc. Cracked my laptop open to see if maybe dust had blocked the exhaust. Nope! It was some loose rubber bit from manufacturing that got stuck into the fan, only allowing one to turn. Dropped something like 12C instantly when I fixed it

@@jacksonneedham2792 savage, my issue is I'm running an i9 9900k in a laptop. it runs so hot that my dc input has melted the adapter while it's plugged in. I need a new dc input soldered on with that heat gun solder, but parts are already scarce for it after such a short time. Its a ridiculous. And its a laptop that shouldn't exist to be fair 😂

    Mad engineer here:
I did the same layout years ago but without using motherboard risers, by directly screwing mobo into .3 mm thinner mdf board. Those are necessary only with conductive background, which you won't require on an insulative woodboard. Saves you a lot of time and space ;) (see what I did there?)
With that said, thanks for the video, the virtual ground circuit was something I never thought of!
    Viva la DIY Perks!

    • @XavierBetoN
      @XavierBetoN 2 роки тому +2

BTW, I came out with another solution for the audio in time:
Instead of using the usb virtual ground circuit, I used no amplifier, and used best sounding speakers with a conic enhancer, while using Debian Linux with 200% audio output, which was audible, considering the system had only 1 x 140mm fan.

There's kind of a big problem with this. BIOS settings can get reset to defaults for various reasons (dead battery, BIOS upgrade, BIOS can enter failsafe mode if there is hardware issues, user changing the settings, etc...).
If the power or screen settings change it would effectively brick the entire system unless you plug the original keyboard back in. Would have been interesting to look at the keyboard connector or any microchip on it and try to just solder switches for the screen/power. Could also have done some others like volume. Also you would have made the system totally portable. At the very least I would hide the keyboard inside the backpanel for emergency maintenance (otherwise it will get lost).

If you want to take the power button problem a step further, you can use a multimeter to find what pins are used for
the button on the keyboard and the resistance if needed then (carefully) solder
a button to the respecting pins with the corresponding resistance (if it uses resistance for identifying keys).

There's another reason for MDF being a superb choice of material - which you may or may not be aware of.
MDF is akin to a light grain wood in density. As a result, it has some good resonant qualities that is why it's used to make speaker cabs. It's also cheeper than pine or actual wood...
    Interesting build.

The subwoofer in the wooden case is genius for acoustical reasons. Bass gets amplified in wood since the wood resonates and essentially makes the whole of the wood a part of the woofer.
That's a trick I used to great effect when I was in the barracks and couldn't fit a big sound system in. Just positioned the woofer in the back middle of the underside of my desk so that the walls of the desk made it seem like I had something more expensive than the small sub woofer I had.

It is funny how this comment is not that far from truth. In practical application of technology, stripping down computers and components assembled by other manufacturers is sometimes just more practical and is used all over the place.
Chances are, most of the people watching used one of repurposed machines like that themselves, they just didnt realize it. I have seen things like that attached to display terminals in public a lot. And when it comes to ISS if something breaks they fix or repurpose it a lot.
It is specially common in countries that border first world countries but are not ones themselves. In first world countries like US people trow out perfectly usable tech, so people just take all that stuff for cheap, move it to poorer countries, re-purpose it and sell it. It is very common for countries in Asia or eastern europe.

Usually, monitors with vesa mounting on it's back are not super slim like the one in the vid, and since looks was the main concern here, a monitor with vesa mount would have ended up being too bulky

I can give this video a 9.9 out of 10 because there was 1 factor that I've discovered that may be seem trivial. Laptop batteries eventually won't be able to hold a charge. So if anything depends on that battery separately it will eventually stop. As long as it's plugged in though all functions should be fine because it's getting it's power from there.

Sorry I didn't see these replies. I have successfully taken apart all the electronics out of the casing. I ran some tests to see everything works fine just like in the video. Instead of building a compartment and also mounting the old laptop screen to essentially make a monitor. I just hooked up the electronics to an old tv with hdmi cable.

I for one would LOVE to see a tower build approach to this sort of project, perhaps building the tower out of cherry or oak repurposed from otherwise unsalvageable furniture or kitchen/coffee tables, dresser drawer sets, etc. Another possibility could be to build the computer into that slim drawer that workstations always seem to have under the working surface, or just create one there.
