If you are going to use a power bank and you don't provide more support than a kick stand (or relocate the bulk of the weight to the base of the notebook) you will still damage your hinges. The amount of added pressure and torque from attaching this to the back of the screen will far exceed their design. Doesn't matter for his hinges, they are already blown. But while the kick stand will help with the added rotation load on your main hinges, it will not support the weight pushing down. Adapt a stand that will support the added weight (or move it underneath the base of your notebook), and you'll be fine.

Neat. The hinge design folding backwards seems interesting as a presentation option. This would be a good starting point to building a monitor that sits on top of your laptop screen (you could strip it down to just the display and controller board, and go from there)

Hi. I did this. It worked great for about two days until the screen got bumped. Then it got screen cancer and died miserably. I recommend upcycling the old bezel so as not to permanently weaken the panel. If I ever do it again, I'll do that.
As "crude" as it looks, I really like it. But (I know, there's always a butt) did you consider a secondary display that supports video and power through USB type c so you'd only need one cable from the laptop and none of that other stuff?
That requires a laptop that has not just a usb c port but also thunderbolt support. And also it could be difficult to find a display panel that uses thunderbolt
Hi mate, I'm going to give this project a go. Unfortunatly none of the links you've provided work... I was just wondering if you could maybe update them. I'd really appriciate it :)) Thanks for putting this video up, I saw it a year or 2 ago and have been wanting to do it for a while! Such a brilliant idea!
Improvement ideas: 1 Thinner power solution: 1.1 Connect in parallel phone batteries 1.2 Connect them to a USB power module 1.3 3D-print them a housing and place them all in a housing 2. Thinner, smaller and stronger hinges: 3D-print a hinge with a smaller circular axis, and longer arms. Benefits: • They can be thinner, • They can support the weight of the plate over a bigger surface area (for better weight pressure distribution) • If casting them from some metal: use liquid metal to connect them to the big aluminium plate (for heat transfer - combine with connecting the screen to the plate, too) 3. Use a cog-wheel/spring-based hinges Advantages: • They can support more weight (for heavier screens and extra and for being on the go - to survive quick movements that push the screen back) • They could be adjusted to be toggleably-locked, for more viewing angles, and keeping the angle you want (like in folable phones nowadays) 4. Combine 3 additional screens in total: Take advantage of the other 3 sides of the laptop's screen, and add 2 additional screens, for a total of 3 additional monitors 5. Even more screens (more difficult to execute, need to be stackable): Find a way to stack more screens such that they're foldable and lock them all in place, to a rectangle shape, for a total bigger screen size (like it's done for TVs) - might need extra hardware
I remember a video where a guy built a pretty similar setup with 3 additional folding screens attached to his laptop, which he even took on plane for demonstration. Also there kind of were commercial products with laptops (or a least portability) and multiple screens. A colleague of mine once had a huge workstation laptop with one (or was it two?) additional small screens sliding out to the sides of the main screen.
Ohh yes. Your colleague may had the ThinkPad W701ds or W700ds, they had a main screen and then a sliding one witch came out from the right side. Those are really rare
Linus Tech Tips just did a video of a recycled laptop screen as a second monitor, he used 3d printed parts for a nice bezel but otherwise pretty similar.
When he explained the mirrored feature so that you can show a mirrored screen to the person before you i was like "wow he is a genius, now i think i need that device"
I wonder, is this possible with more monitors? Having one to each side as well and using a wall power source? You can never have too much screen space.
Cant see that it wouldn't - your limitation is actually the number of display ports on the machine / laptop itself. If you have the ability to connect 4 screens (regardless of what those screens actually are) then it will work just fine and windows will detect each of them.
I have seen a lot of other videos, how ever this is absolutely fantastic idea... keep up the good work....i have started a project based on 1 off your videos.
This is a very fun project to see, but to be honest, it's a bit easier to just plug in a standard PC monitor that could stick above the laptop screen and have it just plugged in whenever needed. If you're on the go, I don't get the point of bringing this spare screen. However, the way it's attached on the back of the laptop screen was very surprising to me. All with all, fun video to watch!

@@VideonMedia The risk may be if you find the odd security personnel that asks: "What is that"? You: A secondary laptop screen, Him: Never seen it before, can you show me where you bought it? Who sells this? You: I made it myself. Him: option 1: You cannot travel with this, we keep it, bye bye or ...Could you please follow me to the "interview" room, we will keep this as it needs to be approved by the FAA... Several hours later, when you have missed your flight: Him: Hello sir, apologies for the delay, all good, please proceed... Of course I am exaggerating but a friend had a homemade power bank confiscated in a Chinese airport because it did not specify the mAh capacity etc
You explain things i always wanted to know and make things look easy to fix with confidence.
I love people who’s like to try new things that have been there for ever
bruh, its so nice to find something nice on the internet, makes a person feel like a grown ass kid again
By the way, we love you so much. Keep diy spirits alive!
Hi, would be nice to see projects with salvaged smartphones.
Please do
Yes please. Like can we use the LCD of a dead tablet and make it as a portable monitor, similar to a broken laptop screen?
I love your projects, how you invent things and document it! Just want to say: Thank you :)
I love your projects and your way of thinking.
Great build! I would love to see your take on a DIY motion-simulator seat for flying/driving games! How would get a little tilt/roll in an ordinary chair for minimal $$
I’m coming from the future and Asus took your laptop design 💻
Hi.
@@Rome1017Lights There's many HDMI USB c hubs online
@@Rome1017Lights was that not what he added at the end?
I literally enjoyed with this such a brilliant idea!
Literally?
Hi mate, I'm going to give this project a go. Unfortunatly none of the links you've provided work... I was just wondering if you could maybe update them. I'd really appriciate it :)) Thanks for putting this video up, I saw it a year or 2 ago and have been wanting to do it for a while! Such a brilliant idea!
Very nice Idea! I would just assume that your Kickstarter was the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo!
Dev Watts hi
It's CES 2024 and this concept has been copied by PC/Laptop Manufacturers. Props to DIY Perks.
Manufacturers have really started to make these!
When you don't have a lot money but you want to have Asus Zenbook Pro Duo..
and by the way keep up the great work
Improvement ideas:
1 Thinner power solution:
1.1 Connect in parallel phone batteries
1.2 Connect them to a USB power module
1.3 3D-print them a housing and place them all in a housing
2. Thinner, smaller and stronger hinges:
3D-print a hinge with a smaller circular axis, and longer arms. Benefits:
• They can be thinner,
• They can support the weight of the plate over a bigger surface area (for better weight pressure distribution)
• If casting them from some metal: use liquid metal to connect them to the big aluminium plate (for heat transfer - combine with connecting the screen to the plate, too)
3. Use a cog-wheel/spring-based hinges
Advantages:
• They can support more weight (for heavier screens and extra and for being on the go - to survive quick movements that push the screen back)
• They could be adjusted to be toggleably-locked, for more viewing angles, and keeping the angle you want (like in folable phones nowadays)
4. Combine 3 additional screens in total:
Take advantage of the other 3 sides of the laptop's screen, and add 2 additional screens, for a total of 3 additional monitors
5. Even more screens (more difficult to execute, need to be stackable):
Find a way to stack more screens such that they're foldable and lock them all in place, to a rectangle shape, for a total bigger screen size (like it's done for TVs) - might need extra hardware
This is a great video. Informative, clear, and well filmed . . . like all of your videos. Well done!
Those are really rare
fairdav hello
Awesome, first to comment.
*Edit* you should absolutely patent this design
Brilliant!. You could always put your laptop on a few books.
the belgium startup "slidenjoy" did it with 3 laterals screens
They haven't released that yet so they have not done it
Linus Tech Tips just did a video of a recycled laptop screen as a second monitor, he used 3d printed parts for a nice bezel but otherwise pretty similar.
You need to start patenting your work bro. Brilliant
0:20 he looks 100% like peter parker (Tobey Maguire) when looking at the laptop XD
9:14 this is genuinely useful in coronatimes, to meet with clients and show them projects, whilst keeping 2m social distance
You will be a magician now... love your DIY projects
Wow, you are from the future, right? It’s 2023 now, I think Lenovo’s designers must have watched your videos, it's like YogaBook 9i
Love it!

I have seen a lot of other videos, how ever this is absolutely fantastic idea... keep up the good work....i have started a project based on 1 off your videos.
me searching on yt: how to make a laptop with 2 screens
DIY Perks: DIY Dual Screen Laptop! (100% DIY!)
me: a monitor from my pc and my laptop XDDDDDDD
This could also be used for a game console for travel. I would finally have a reason to use my metal briefcase again...😋
You probably can somehow make a DS/3DS emulator setup using both display :D
You are a genius man
can’t wait to flex on everyone in my next lecture
at 1:02 , the first thing that popped up in my mind was...
"Spidey knows how to DIY some cool shit bro"
(Tobey Maguire - Spiderman)
He looks like a mix of Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland
when he gona show us how to make web shooters though...

Exacly, Razer have also made a laptop with 3 monitors
No what he mean is the posture. You eye level still lower...But a stand can solve this issue too?
