1976. My best friend and I had just graduated high school, and decided to take a trip. We hitchhiked from Breckenridge, MN to Colorado Springs, hung out there for a week with a friend of my older brother. Total time on the trip between hitchhiking and partying along the way was one day short of 3 weeks when we caught our last ride of about 20 miles to get back to my friend's home town. We were sitting in the back seat of a station wagon, the radio was playing, and just as we entered the outskirts of town, this song came on the radio. We spontaneously turned and hgh-fived. "Oh, yeah! The Boys are Back! Barn dance tonight!" It was, after all, time for the summertime weekly dance at Vagt's Barn. : )
saw this band back in the late 70's with a very conservative girlfriend of mine at he time. her first rock show. we had f.o.c. seats. half way through the show, they shut the doors to stop people coming down from the upstairs stalls. 3 songs later, I told her turn around and said to her "have a look at this". they were jumping down from the upstairs stalls. and yes folks, the knickers went down.
This was their biggest hit in the U.S. but they had a few more here and a lot in the U.K. They were an underappreciated hard rock band that could really rock and play great ballads too. Terrific band and singer, bassist passed away in the 80's (not sure of the year).
These boys are from my home country, Brad & Lex....& this was one of many classics; they had a distinct guitar sound - like a fingerprint - totally distinctive; you can recognise a 'Lizzy song from the opening chords. Phil Lynott was my main motivation to play bass. I would recommend, 'Roisin Dubh' (Black Rose) - a potted history of Ireland's greatest Literary & Musical giants, & by the by, one of Lynott's greatest heroes was Elvis, amongst others, hence his singing style, Lex.....It really doesn't get much better than this. Good call !!
From the 1976 album "Jailbreak", thin lizzy was an Irish hard rock band with Phil Lynott (bass, vocals) and guitarist Gary Moore at the core. Both died way too early, Lynott in January 1986 from a drugs related pneumonia and Moore in February 2011 (heart attack). Saw them both live a couple of times, together and seperately, during the eighties.
Have to correct you there a little. Gary Moore was a member of Thin Lizzy three times, always very briefly, and the only actual album he made with them was "Black Rose" in 1979. "Jailbreak" was their third album - sixth overall - with their classic lineup of Lynott, drummer Brian Downey and guitarists Scott Gorham (an American) and Brian Robertson (a Scotsman). Gorham stayed in the band to the end in 1983, and so did Downey - the latter was also, like Lynott, a founding member.
You gotta watch them live to truly appreciate them. And yes in the US this was their "big hit" but OMG they had so many great songs. Phil Lynott was a fantastic poet and beautiful inside and out....dive into their catalog.. emerald, dancing in 5he moonlight and whisky in 5he jar are my top 3... Definitely check out the live performance.
Thin Lizzy were the first real Irish rock band formed in 1969. Whiskey in the Jar was their first big it. They had many more, Jailbreak, Dancing in the Moonlight, Waiting for an Alibi, Sarah, Emerald. A fantastic band!
That whole album is fantastic from beginning to the end. One of my all time favorites. Back in the day when I was upgrading my cassettes to cds it was the first one. I can’t say enough how much I love it.
The "Boys" were the QSG in Manchester with a member of the gang known as Jimmy the Weed, the 12" EP featured the extra tracks "Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed", "Black Boys on the Corner" and a live version of "Me and the Boys". The pub that the lead singers Mother ran was a favorite watering hole of certain members of the Quality Street Gang.
Thin Lizzy had 2 hits in America. This, and Jailbreak. They were much bigger in Europe. After this era, the band started getting a bit heavier. They were a huge inspiration on Metallica, particularly with guitar harmonies.
This is their most popular song but far from their best. Many more from them for you to discover. My favourite is Out in the Fields where Phil (the lead singer - RIP) collaborates with Gary Moore (a guitar legend - RIP). But songs like Rosalie, Whiskey in The Jar, Dancing in the Moonlight and Cowboy Song are definitely worth checking out
Phil Lynot is a Black Irish artist bassist and singer/song writer from the Band Thin Lizzy. The band was a hard rock band formed in Dublin, Ireland, in 1969. Their music reflects a wide range of influences, including blues, soul music, psychedelic rock, and traditional Irish folk music, but is generally classified as hard rock or sometimes heavy metal. RIP Phil Lynot you are a Legend….
The singer/ bassist heroin & alcohol abuse was so insane his feet swolled up like pumpkins, the feet turned coal black & burst open with reeking infection & puss steady oozing from the dead flesh , Phils death from drug addiction makes Layne Stayleys "alice in chains " death look like natural causes ,everyone who saw Phil in his last month of life has said his necrotic feet actually rotting off the bones was the most horrific scene they ever saw another human suffer through ,BTW the song " Whiskey in the Jar " made famous by Metallica is a Thin Lizzy jam.
Best part of this song is right after the chorus. The guitars stay on the same chord for two measures, playing their harmonizing riffs, but the bass actually moves up after only one measure, and it creates this lifting dissonance. It’s hard to describe, but so small a thing brings so much to the song.
I loved Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy of course, when I was a young man. He was a big idol of mine and a inspiration for me. Great that you like him too. Lizzy made so many cool songs. The double guitarplay was a trademark, the drummer had a real special jazzy swing to the Hard Rock style. But Lynnot was my star. His voice and that he played the bass and sang and looked so unbelievable cool. I think you would enjoy songs like Johhny the Fox meets Jimmy the Weed, Got to give it up and China Town but also some of the songs he did late in his career as a solo artist. Kings Call about the death of Elvis maybe the very best. Mark Knofler from Dire Straits play on that track, its GREAT, a classic. Also the title track from that album, Solo in Soho is worth to mention. Love your channel. Keep it up. Much love from Berlin, Germany.
One of the few internationaliy famous Irish rock bands. The singer/writer/bassist takes that rarity further by being black. My mother grew up in Ireland and never even met a black person until she moved to NYC. This song ilis from 1976. Their biggest, but not only hit. One of the first to do double lead guitars.
Thin Lizzy are a 70's rock band from Ireland. They had a string of worldwide hits. The lead singer and bass player is the great singer and songwriter, Phil Lynott - absolutely brilliant. They were unique at the time by having two lead guitarists in the band. You have to venture down this rabbit hole.
Good one guys. This song was on the soundtrack to the 1982 hit movie 48 HRS. with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte, great flick, check it out. Murphy also sings The Police song Roxanne in his jail cell. Really good movie, you two need to check it out. ☮️✌️💕
This is their highest charting hit single, but Thin Lizzy was a very popular rock band in the 70's that put out some classic albums and were fantastic in concert (their double live album "Live And Dangerous" is ranked one of the best of the classic rock era). They were one of the first rock bands that performed with two lead guitarists. Bassist and singer Phil Lynot was an iconic songwriter and musician.
My favorite from the Jailbreak album is still Cowboy song, The Gorham/Robertson twin harmonies and trading lead solos of that era of the band were dam right awesome.
The times Thin Lizzy toured in the US, something always happened and they had to cut it short - they never got the live exposure. However, many musicians note the influence of Thin Lizzy musically.
Thin Lizzy has some great songs, "cowboy song", "jailbreak" & "dancing in the moonlight". They were an Irish band & Phil Lynot the lead singer was the first black Irish person to get famous. This song got really big in the 80's in Eddie Murphy & Nick Nolte's movie "48hrs" along with the Police's "Roxanne" which Eddie sang at the beginning of the movie.
Phil Lynott (RIP) was a black bass playing Irishman. There is a statute to him in Dublin Ireland. He's a national hero. Philip Parris Lynott (20 August 1949 - 4 January 1986) was an Irish singer, musician, and songwriter. His most commercially successful group was Thin Lizzy, of which he was a founding member, the principal songwriter, lead vocalist and bassist. He was known for his imaginative lyrical contributions including working class tales and numerous characters drawn from personal influences and Celtic culture. Lynott was born in the West Midlands of England, but grew up in Dublin with his grandparents.
Was just in Ireland on vacation and my personal highlights were Slane Castle, where they've had a lot of big concerts, the first being Thin Lizzy (Phil Lynott being a local) and getting a pic with Phil's statue in Dublin.
An Irish rock band. Phil Lynott black Irishman songwriter singer bass player. At one time or another had some of the best guitar players in Rock especially Gary Moore. Cowboy song and jailbreak and Whiskey in the Jar(an old Irish folk song rocked up by Thin Lizzy) are three songs you should check out. Unfortunately many ,many years ago drugs and alcohol got the best of Phil Lynott. RIP
Phil Lynott had a such a special voice, warm and full of longing. I also love a song for his daughter, different but so sweet - "A Child's Lullaby'", so mellow!
Thin lizzy was an essential part of the hardrock/metal sound to take over in the 80's with 2 lead guitars. So many great songs from this band. And so many really talented guitar players they had.
Gotta do “still in love with you” cowboy song, bad reputation, jail break, dancing in the moonlight etc etc.. and some Gary Moore the guitarists solo stuff!
I concur, still in love with you is great. Especially the version from "Live and Dangerous." Fantastic live album. And I'm very hard to please with love recordings.
More Lizzy! Don’t believe a word, Got to give it up, Wild One, Still in love with you (live and dangerous), Bad reputation, cowboy song, bad habits and borderline. GREAT songs!
This song was literally made about a corner bar in Marion ohio...dinos drive thru..had a bar attached to it called the time out ..nickname KNOCKOUT. Due to all the fights..put ...the bar has pictures of the band playing in the bar ..absolutely clear ..great reaction guys
This was the song the band was known for, it’s one of two songs of theirs that charted, (“Cowboy Song,” peaked at No.77 & “The Boys Are Back in Town” peaked at No.12,) however, as I am one to repeat, the times were different and how music was consumed and how the popularity of a band was generated and maintained were different, (for instance, gaining popularity through touring with more popular acts, like Bob Seger.) Thin Lizzy was more popular near their home base of Ireland, the UK & Europe, than in the United States, but they still had a fanbase. This song has been licensed to death though, and their legacy is inextricably tied to it and the song’s relationship to marketing products-thanks to such a catchy guitar hook, and also the clean, smooth vocals, it’s a perfect song to play over footage of a new car driving off a lot or a group of cold beers clanging together. 🤷🏻♀️
Fantastic band, one of my favorites, and broke the mold with twin guitar and Black lead singer as well as the face of the group. Ton of great stuff from them left to explore, sad we lost Phil Lynott way to early RIP.
The singer Phil Lynotts grandma used to run a bar and Phil spent part of his childhood living with her and being around the bar. The bar used to be popular with a well-known group of gangsters back in the day and this song is about them.
Lead singer Phil Lynott's Mother, Philomena, ran a club/bar in Manchester where the "Quality Street Gang" would often drink. They were a criminal gang and were called 'Quality Street' because they always 'dressed to kill". They often had to lie low, and when they came back "the boys were back in town". Phil watched these guys as he grew up, and then wrote the song about them. Deno's was a real club in Manchester.
The opening lyrics are about Phil Lynott's early years living in Manchester Uk. His mom ran a hotel where some recently released men from prison used to live for a while. Hence the words Guess who just got back today whose boys that have been away.
Dear Brad and Lex, you are two rays of sunshine in this world filled with darkness. Thanks for doing what you guys are doing. It's adorable. Now here's a challenge for you: Listen to "Keeper of the Seven Keys" by German band Helloween (yes...it's with "e"). A spectacular thirteen-minute adventure. Ah...there's still a nice bonus...Michael Kiske...one of the greatest singers in history. Again, you guys are amazing. Follow your path with your heart...you can't go wrong !! Kisses from Brazil !!
Phil Lynott -legend....live,he would sing 'The boys are back in town, get your knickers down!'......'Are there any girls out there with any Irish in them? Any girls out there who'd like some more Irish in them?'.........RIP Phil Lynott
As with quite a few of these sorts of bands I believe they were a power house live act who went into the studio as a reason to have something to tour, one of the reasons live and dangerous was a hit was its combination of the best bits of multiple concerts possibly with some tuning, but still live footage
Don’t know if you know but the lead singer, Phil Lynott is a proud black Irish brother. Check out the live version to see these guys; they have TWO lead guitarists and Lynott sings lead and plays bass. It’s on UA-cam if you get a chance to see it you’ll love it.

Thin Lizzy had many hits and were very big in the UK. The lead singer was actually from Ireland. It is well known Metallica are fans of the band.
METALLICA covered their song Whiskey In The Jar.
Whiskey in the Jar by Metallica is want I class as the worst cover of all times, that an All Saints - Under The Bridge
He was an Irish mixed race rocker. Unheard of back then in the 70’s and still unheard of now. He was great.
Thin Lizzy is def one of my favorites. Phil Lynott was so cool... superb songwriter and musician.
The blending of the solos of the two guitars at the end is of the most beautiful sound
'Jailbreak' has to be next. It has one of the best opening riffs of all-time.
Phil absolutely spits out the bars on their “Thunder & Lightning” track……Amazing guitars & drums also
Thin Lizzy had 2 hits in America.
Dancing in the moonlight/The Cowboy Song. Just two of my personal favorites. They were definitely not a one hit wonder band.
DEFINITELY ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE BANDS👍RIP PHIL AND AND HIS WONDERFUL MUM✌❤🙏
Before U-2, Thin Lizzy was THE Irish band. They were very big in Europe in the 70's.
Who are U2?
One of the few internationaliy famous Irish rock bands. The singer/writer/bassist takes that rarity further by being black. My mother grew up in Ireland and never even met a black person until she moved to NYC. This song ilis from 1976. Their biggest, but not only hit. One of the first to do double lead guitars.
Jailbreak - Thin lizzy
One of my all time favorites, a lot of good tunes from these guys!
One do the greats! RIP Phil, so many great songs " dont believe a word" " Emerald" "cowboy song"
YES Goreham / Robertson era was the strongest lineup
The times Thin Lizzy toured in the US, something always happened and they had to cut it short - they never got the live exposure. However, many musicians note the influence of Thin Lizzy musically.
This song instantly transports me back to when my brother and I were both home from college for the summer - it was our anthem!
The Rocker, Whiskey in the jar, Rosalie, Waitin' for an alibi, Don't believe a word, Dancin' in the moonlight ..........
I think I just liked my own comment!
One of the best rock n roll bands of a time
Amazing back catalogue
Was just in Ireland on vacation and my personal highlights were Slane Castle, where they've had a lot of big concerts, the first being Thin Lizzy (Phil Lynott being a local) and getting a pic with Phil's statue in Dublin.
I saw this band in 1979 in Beaumont, Texas when I was 17 and they were awesome, they sounded just like the record.
"Happy Gangsta Movies"? Lol, collegey?, Love you guys
Definitely check out Black Rose from Lizzy (Gary Moore on 2nd guitar - and then you'll need to check out some of Gary Moore's solo stuff too).
Gary Moore fo sho.
He's up there with Jimi and SRV.
Definitely a GOAT.
Check out Red House live "50 years of Fender Guitar"
Gary Moore is brilliant 👍
@@andrewcollier3495 From Skid Row the original Irish band, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum 2, Les Variations, BBM, the list go's on. He was bad ass.
Corridors of power was a great album. Much respect to Gary Moore
This is like damn old nostalgic song about 70-80s. So gold or platinum
Great band! Please check out another of their hits, "Jailbreak".
This was the song the band was known for, it’s one of two songs of theirs that charted, (“Cowboy Song,” peaked at No.77 & “The Boys Are Back in Town” peaked at No.12,) however, as I am one to repeat, the times were different and how music was consumed and how the popularity of a band was generated and maintained were different, (for instance, gaining popularity through touring with more popular acts, like Bob Seger.)
Thin Lizzy was more popular near their home base of Ireland, the UK & Europe, than in the United States, but they still had a fanbase. 🤷🏻♀️
i saw Thin Lizzy as a backup band for Queen back in 1976. They kicked ass! Queen was a kick ass rock band in those days also. Nothing like 80's Queen
I think it's about the band getting back home after a tour.
This song was used in a popular Canadian beer commercial back in the 80s.
"Don't Believe a Word" and "The Cowboy Song" are must reactions from Thin Lizzy.
Now here's a challenge for you:
Listen to "Keeper of the Seven Keys" by German band Helloween (yes...it's with "e"). A spectacular thirteen-minute adventure. Ah...there's still a nice bonus...Michael Kiske...one of the greatest singers in history.
Again, you guys are amazing. Follow your path with your heart...you can't go wrong !! Kisses from Brazil !!
Great song! You should check out ‘Dancing in the moonlight’ by Thin Lizzy- one of my favourite songs.
A favourite for soldiers coming home.
Phil Lynott -legend....live,he would sing 'The boys are back in town, get your knickers down!'......'Are there any girls out there with any Irish in them? Any girls out there who'd like some more Irish in them?'.........RIP Phil Lynott
If you are checkin out Lizzy , check out Parisienne Walkways , or the Cowboy Song , Dancing in the Moonlight . Best Band from Ireland....EVER!!
RIP Phil Lynott. Left us way way way too soon - still remembered. Loved Lizzy!!!
Check out Don't Believe A Word. when I was in the Navy pulling into port after a cruise this was our song.
As with quite a few of these sorts of bands I believe they were a power house live act who went into the studio as a reason to have something to tour, one of the reasons live and dangerous was a hit was its combination of the best bits of multiple concerts possibly with some tuning, but still live footage
This song always came on the radio in the summer. Great song.
Don’t know if you know but the lead singer, Phil Lynott is a proud black Irish brother. Check out the live version to see these guys; they have TWO lead guitarists and Lynott sings lead and plays bass. It’s on UA-cam if you get a chance to see it you’ll love it.
The face appears on Lex shirt is a cover album from spanish band called Baron Rojo, the album is Metalmorfosis.
