    5. Suicide
    6. Wild One

    10. Massacre
    11. Bad Reputation

most widely known explanation for this song is that it refers to the Quality Street Gang - based in Manchester England. Lead singer Phil Lynott's mam owned a pub in Manchester which this gang would regularly frequent - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_Street_Gang - the line "The boys are back in town" is reference to when they were released fom prison after serving time for some of their crimes

SongFacts: Written by group leader Phil Lynott, "The Boys Are Back In Town" reflects Thin Lizzy's rough-and-tumble composure and working-class roots. The song was a way of connecting with their fans, who had similar sensibilities. Thin Lizzy would often stir up trouble and end up in fights - their roadies were chosen based in part on their pugilistic skills. The group also drank heavily and had a blast. The song became their calling card. This lifestyle took a tragic toll on Lynott, who died in 1986 at 36 after his body broke down from years of drug and alcohol abuse. Folks in Manchester, England, will tell you "The Boys Are Back In Town" is about the Quality Street Gang, a criminal enterprise not unlike the Mafia. Phil Lynott spent much of his youth in Manchester, where his mom ran a club called the Showbiz. The QSG would often hang out there, always "dressed to kill" (they were so named because of their fashion sense).
A key member of the gang was Jimmy "The Weed" Donnelly, the subject of a song on Thin Lizzy's next album called "Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed." The Dino's Bar And Grill mentioned in the song is probably a real place, but which one is up for debate. Deno's was a Manchester nightclub the Quality Street Gang would frequent; Dino's Lodge was a Hollywood cabaret with a Dean Martin theme (Martin was a business partner). It shows up in the opening credits of the TV series 77 Sunset Strip. Drink would flow at both establishments, but if you're looking for a place where blood would spill, it was definitely Deno's.

Johnny the Fox meets Jimmy the weed is about The quality street gang. So is Showdown from Nightlife album. The boys are back in town was inspired by troops coming home from Vietnam in the mid 70s. Dinos bar and grill is correct picked from 77 sunset strip. Philips facination with america was in full blossom around this time. Songs like Cowboy song and The boys are back in town was hugely inspired by that, and what is more amercan than Dean Martin and a Bar and Grill🙂

    • @antonytheolddog8626
      @antonytheolddog8626 2 роки тому +3

The name quality street is from a Tin of chocolates/confectionery.
And there was a bill board poster when I was a kid.
With well dressed folks and it supposedly came from that.
But that's all pretty much bang on.
My sister lived next to Jimmy swords, and as a kid I played for jnr blues( Manchester city) kids team back in the late 70s.
And around platt lane in Moss side and Maine road football stadium,
The qsg were mentioned like folk hero's.
We all knew who they were.
It was a hushed thing amongst kids like.
      😎

As the story goes, the band invited Phil to join the band and sing on the condition that he was willing to play bass, which he agreed to.

Thin Lizzy are very important in the development of British rock, hard rock and metal, in that they influenced many bands who followed, and in turn many bands worldwide. They used the 'twin guitar' sound - two lead guitarists playing the same lick/riff, while singer Phil Lynott played bass. That twin guitar sound was also used by other 1970s bands, such as Wishbone Ash, and Judas Priest. These bands inspired bands such as Iron Maiden who still use that twin sound, with two lead guitarists, to this day (in fact Iron Maiden currently have three guitarists plus bass!). It makes for a really sharp, melodic sound.

This song is about gangsters from here in Manchester England in the 60's and 70's
They were called the quality street gang, named after a Tin of confectionery/candy. my sister lived next door in failsworth north side of town, he was called Jimmy swords (for obvious reasons).
I actually laid a carpet for him in a bedroom.
He was a old dude by then, hell I'm old now.lol
But they are legendary around here.
They even ran the krays out of town.
    Nobody messed with them.
And where had they been to 'be back in town'..
Spain ...they were laying low in Marbella Spain..
Oh and Phil lynott was a Irish black kid here in Manchester and they befriended him.
And of course..no body around moss side said a cross words to Phil..

Most people think the song is a shout out to the fact that they were rowdy and got into a lot of bar fights just like their fans. Some think it might be about a gang in Manchester England where Phil spent much of his youth as his mom used to manage a bar there. There is a statue of Phil in Dublin Ireland.

Thin Lizzy, formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1969. The song was released in 1976. No one has ever said what the song is about. Since Phil Lynott died in 1986 and he wrote the song we may never know for sure. This song in 2004 was listed on Rolling Stone's 500 greatest songs of all time at 499. This song has been used in 2019 in Applebee's commercials. It was also used in Toy Story and Toy Story 2 trailers. "Jailbreak" was on the same album. See Danny Casson's comment for more on "Jailbreak". Thank You for your reaction of this song, Asia and BJ.

It should be ranked much higher than #499, in my opinion. It has everything a great song should have, but most importantly, it has the vibe, swagger, authenticity, and energy that so aptly depicts the rock and rock/pop era. AND...it has stood the test of time very well.

To Doug Ford: What’s good about the Boys Are Back in Town is that it can refer to anyone. When I was at Ohio State, when we returned in the fall from summer break, we were the boys and Iused to crank that as soon as I got my stereo set up. And the song ages well and in different versions. Did you hear the cover Bonjovi did for the end credits on The Expendables? It wasn’t as good as the original, but it wasn’t bad.

Summer of '76, Freshly graduated from high school, best friend and I hitchhiked from Breckenridge, Minnesota to Colorado Springs, and then back. Total trip including time spent partying in Colorado Springs was just under 3 weeks. We got back to within about 40 miles of Breckenridge, when we broke down and used a payphone to make a collect call to his parents, who came and picked us up for the last leg of the journey. Riding in the back seat of their car, we didn't say much. We were both pretty pleased with ourselves for having made the trip, but were, quite frankly, kinda sick of each other's company after 19 days out. Just as we entered the outskirts of Breckenridge, this song came on the radio. We looked at each other and grinned, and high-fived. Oh, yeah! The Boys, us, were back in town!
We still talk about that day when we get together.

I don't know about Ireland but the US had motorcycle gangs-the most notorious being the "Hell's Angels." This song comes from the album Jailbreak so the "boys" could also be ex-cons.

According to singer Phil Lynott (R.I.P.) "The Boys Are Back in Town" (1976/US#12, UK#8, IRE#1) is about a crew of dudes that just got out of jail for something rowdy. In my mind's eye, I always imagined it was a biker gang, which really *were* a big deal back in the 1970s. From the late '60s to the early '80s is probably the most motorcycle culture ever permeated the mainstream, while films, cartoons, and comic books used them as interchangeable minions and fodder and a sort of cultural shorthand for "the worst kind of criminal" at the time. And Thin Lizzy was an Irish band who made Party Rock for hell-raisers. Bikers already loved their hit version of "Whiskey in the Jar" (1972/UK#6, IRE#1) for years before "The Boys Are Back in Town" came out.
I'm a bigtime music nerd. I know a lot of stuff and I like to categorize things. I'm good at it. But Think Lizzy are one of those bands that makes it a challenge for me. I have3 no idea what genre they are, besides Rock. I mean, they are clearly "Classic Rock", but that's not really a genre. It's a radio/streaming format. And yeah, this and a few other Thin Lizzy songs have been played in steady rotation on every Classic Rock platform for the last 45 years. But they aren't really a part of any overarching trend in popular music from around that time, except that they had long hair and guitar solos. Metalheads love them, but they definitely aren't Metal. There's a lot more Punk in Lynott's vocal delivery than one might expect from a year before Punk Rock even happened. And the lyrics feel like a more macho version of UK Glam anthems like "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" by Elton John (1973/US#12, UK#7), "Street Life" by Roxy Music (1973/UK#9), or "All the Young Dudes" by Mott the Hoople (1972/US#37, UK#3). They even feel like Power Pop at times. Great band.

I saw them when I was 10 years old in 1977 at the Aladdin Theater in Las Vegas. I LOVED this song. The "boys" sounded so cool to me. I especially liked the part where they got in fights and the blood was spilling. What's funny is that in real life I was (and still am) a wimpy guy who never fights. I don't even like tough biker kind of guys, yet Thin Lizzy made them seem so likeable to me.
