BG Music:
Thin Lizzy is one of the most underrated bands in rock history. They pioneered the 2 guitar sound that so many bands today used, and even the older guys like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.
Their best twin guitar track in my opinion is Waiting For An Alibi.
Right on brother. Thin Lizzy forever!
@@paulbrown8402 not Emerald?!?
Wishbone Ash
Totally not true, the Allman Brothers pioneered the two lead guitar sound long before lizzy ever existed.
Phil Lynott's vocals were unique and amazing. there is no mistaking the sound. you hear Phil and you know it's Thin Lizzy. nice reaction.
Well said. Outstanding composer as well. Even Bob Dylan lists Lizzy as a personal favorite.
Hell, Yeah- I saw TL open for Queen in January 1978 - Kalamazoo, MI - I was 16 yrs old and totally there for Queen (in love with Brian May lol) - but when TL came out and I saw Phil.. I was totally distracted.. he was magnetic... (of course, Queen eclipsed that initial infatuation...)... Damn, I'm old!
He’s also that great voice on the original ‘Jeff Wayne’s : War of the Worlds’ album. Amazing.
Could be Gary Moore. 🤷♂️
@@leostarr9789 Gary Moore sounds distinctly different.
the singer/bass player Phil Lynott is in a group of one; Black Irish Rock Stars!!
Lizzy were warriors, especially the Jailbreak line-up. If you want to know how powerful they were, you have got to listen to the entirety of Live & Dangerous.
Was there for the portion of the taping of L&D in Toronto in 77, was one of the best concerts of the decade.
Yes! 100% right
One of the finest live albums ever!
Massacre from Live and Dangerous was a force of nature
true saw that era tour
"The Man at the back" - Brian Downey. THE most underrated, under-appreciated, under-mentioned drummer in rock.
Absolutely criminal that never got recognition he deserves
Couldn't agree more. Everybody brings up those twin lead guitars, and sure, they're important - but the groove from Downey's drumbeats is an even more integral part of that unique Thin Lizzy sound.
100%
I use Greg Bissonette Drum on RMX ( ex eatles David Le Roth with Steve Vai ) and I swear in some of his "Rock Hip Hop grooves" he is copying Brian Downey, I swear I save those Loops and chop them up and save them as "Downey Style Beats and Tom fills."
Some real "Bad Reputation" Type beats fills and stuff.
Phil Lynott was one of those gilt-edged rockstars.
The love for Thin Lizzy is massive - much bigger than people think.
A reaction to The Boys are Back in Town would be great, if you haven't already reacted to it.
I'm pretty sure they did already.
Irish performers never got the recognition that they deserved. Rory Gallagher one of the greatest guitarists of all time and no one even knows who he is.
Thin Lizzy has this vibe that's both laidback and badass at the same time. Like AC/DC is the kind of rock that makes you think of guys that will come into a bar, shotgun a bunch of beers, make a bunch of noise and take over the place. Where as Thin Lizzy makes me think of the kind of guys that are going to go sit in the back of the bar, smoke their cigarettes and just be rather inconspicuous. But if shit goes down in that bar, they're going to be the ones to end it.
This is definitely one of the most under-rated bands ever and among my favorites. Thin Lizzy has so many great songs thanks go all the great musicians like Phil Lynott, John Sykes (Whitesnake), Gary Moore and Scott Graham just to name a few throughout the various iterations of the group.
My Favourite incarnation was Phil, Brian, Scott & Robbo. Followed very closely by Phil, Brian, Scott & Gary. I only got to see Lizzy once live, but as a trio Phil, Brian & Eric they were opening for Slade they were Awesome.
One of the best things that can be said about a riff like the hook in "Jailbreak" is that it's "simple". The beautiful thing about a riff like that is that whilst it glides by seemingly effortlessly when you listen to it, it's actually quite a challenge to actually play correctly. Add Phil's "lead bass" style of playing and the sound is unmistakable. One of the greatest Irish pub bands ever. And their hay-day they could sell out 15K arenas on a weeknight 💯🤘
"Less is more, quality not quantity"
They never made it much beyond cult status in the U.S., but made album after album of quality hard rock.
Thin Lizzy never got the notoriety that they deserved. They have a boat load of amazing tunes.
I remember seeing a Thin Lizzy concert where Phil Lynott asks the crowd 'Anybody out there with a bit of Irish in them?' The crowd react enthusiastically in the positive. Then he asks 'Anybody out there who wants a bit more Irish in them?' :-)
Not anybody, girls
Very popular, and very iconic and influential band. Their double album "Live And Dangerous" is consistently ranked in the top 10 live rock albums of all time
'logs on to Spotify '
If no one ain't gonna say it then I will Thin Lizzy is one of the most feckin legendary rock bands to Come out of Dublin , Ireland 🤘🏻🇮🇪☘💚
Feeling.....Lucky????
Then Lizzy is criminally underrated in most of the world. Check out EMERALD or DANCING IN THE MOONLIGHT or SHA LA LA or MASSACRE. They have so many great songs it's hard to pick a few
One of the best rock bands around particularly from the 70's.More people need to get into this marvellous band !!
Emerald is one of the best Thin Lizzy songs. Just awesome. Great band.
BLACK ROSE
@@edwardleonetti2492 That's another good one
He has a certain unique quality in his vocals. Its bad ass.
In Dublin, Ireland there is a bronze statue of the lead singer, Phil Lynott.
Shame we were just starting to see this bands full potential when Phil Lynott passed. Great songs and some really great guitarist played in Thin Lizzy. RIP Phil 🙏
Once they got rid of Brian Robertson the Lizzy guitarists went downhill - apart from when he returned obviously.
Yes Rip Phil thanks for giving us your talents, you left us way too soon 🙏🎸
The band did split up two and a half years before Phil died, and he spent the interim time in Grand Slam. Still, we would have undoubtedly seen a Thin Lizzy reunion eventually if he had lived, since that was what he really wanted.
Thin Lizzy, criminally underated. Amazing live band, I recommend checking out live and dangerous footage from the rainbow theatre. It captures their energy. A particular favourite for me is still in love with you
Thin Lizzy pioneered the two guitarist line up after their original guitarist Brian Robertson injured his hand in a bar fight on the eve of their first U.S. tour which then had to be cancelled.
Thin Lizzy had just found their stride when Phil Lynott, bass and lead vocals, died. They were poised to become the biggest rock band in the world. Can't go wrong with Scott Gorham and Gary Moore on guitar.
The charisma of Lynott come across in his vocal, great showman, and bass player
Completely unique front man.
Phil Lynott died so young and just weren’t around that long. They did make it into the 80s.
Yeah with a needle in his arm, what a wasted talent... I remember listening to the radio to an L.A. station probably 95.5 KLOS and they were interviewing Dio when the news of his passing came, Dio's voice changed and just started talking about Phil and not himself anymore..
Thin Lizzy inspired so many metal bands of the 80s and 90s
Thin Lizzy was huge overseas in Europe during the '70s and early '80s. They were from Ireland. Had a good following here in the US as well, but somewhat underrated here in the States like another band U.F.O. (unfortunately). A lot of it had to do with the concert tourings and promotions back then I believe. They did tour here in the States, but also many of their concert were cancelled or postponed due to the bands wild lifestyle (bar fights, drug use, heavy drinking, legal issues, bad luck, illness/hospitals, etc). So they were inconsistent on the US concert tourings. But, their songs were still on the radio station and records were sold. They were a hard rock, early metal type band also a little funky at times. Also a lot of Irish folk music in some of their songs. . Very popular and influential. '70s wasn't all just disco lol. Thin Lizzy inspired many metal and hard rock bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, White Reaper Foo Fighters Bruce Springsteen, Cheap Trick, etc. Especially with the twin lead guitars sounds, harmonies, and guitar solos.
Check out their other songs like "Boys are Back in Town", "Cowboy Song", "Angel of Death", "Chinatown", "Emerald", "Opium Trail", "Soldier of Fortune", "Opium Trail" , "Emerald", "Rocker", "Whiskey in the Jar" (Metallica covered this), "Black Boys on the Corner", "Dancing in the Moonlight", "Killer on the Loose", "Cold Sweat", and many others, etc.
Phil Lynott (RIP) was a great bass guitar player and singer. Unique cool voice and song writer, very soulful, smooth and strong voice. Thick Irish accent, too. He was mixed race half Irish (mom) and half Afro-Caribbean (father). handsome guy with a lot of swagger. Very smart, charismatic, well spoken, etc. The women loved him lol.
Very sad he passed away so young in his late '30s back in 1986. Pneumonia, sepsis blood infection from drug use. Mother and wife, kids were about to take him to the hospital during New Years Day weekend. I believe it was too late. They tried to cool him off in a bathtub with ice. Had a high fever, was still conscious and talking. But, did take him to a hospital where he was on a ventilator after getting worse. This was back in the '80s. Who knows, with modern medicine and equipment, he might have still been alive. He was trying to kick the H habit, but I think he relapsed. Very unfortunate.
They worship Phil and his mother in Ireland! Huge funeral turn out (hundreds nearly a thousand attended), bronze statue of Phil downtown Dublin, Ireland, mother always interviewed, visited and on TV. And music still played everywhere and on movies. They were almost inducted to Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, but they keep missing the cut. Some day they will get in, in my opinion.
I think you'll find their first hit was 'The Rocker', not a big hit... that was 'Whiskey in the Jar'. Their first LP hit was Jailbreak. I remember them all cause I bought them 🙂
My dad saw them open for Queen back in the day in Boston and said they blew them away. He's been a fan ever since and i guess that trickled down to me.
@@rustyshackleford661 Oh very nice!. Cool. Thanks for sharing that story.
A reporter once asked Phil " what it felt like to be a black man from Ireland" ? He said I feel like a pint of Guinness 🤣☘️
The hidden album tracks have dozens of unknown classics, the most under rated band ever and the most under ratecd star Phil a genius.
Their most popular song was “The boys are back in town “! Jail break and Cowboy song are awesome!
Phil Lynott is criminally underrated. The two lead guitars add a great dimension to the music. Cowboy song off live and dangerous is a must.
Hi guys THIN LIZZY never had any luck touring America , ,Phil got really Sick before a tour also , Brian Robertson( guitar) badly cut his hand in a bar fight the day before an American tour was to start , had to cancel these tours very unlucky, but Lizzy headlined loads of shows all over the world .great channel guys.
Phil was a great lyricist and storyteller... China Town, Emerald, Cowboy Song (Live and Dangerous version), The Rocker... Etc..
Thin Lizzy defined a sound and style that influenced just about every British rock band that followed them, as well as a great many European ones, and some of the biggest American acts of the 1980's. Sometimes it's about more than commercial success or media profile, it's about the quality of the music and the soul of the band.
Thin Lizzy - Emerald. From the same album was one of my favorite jams. A must listen.
Thin lizzy has a deep catalog
And a huge underground following
They didn't get a lot of their songs played on the radio but have great great songs
Thunder and lightning
Waiting for an alibi
Sun goes down
Sugar blues
Angel of death
Holy wars
Are a few great songs by them
So glad you’ve reacted to Thin Lizzy again - it’s always Whisky In The Jar, The Boys Are Back In Town, Jailbreak and Dancing In The Moonlight which get reacted to - would love you to be adventurous next time and try one of these two: Sitamoia / Cold Sweat.
And here's a few more classics: The Rocker / Black Boys On The Corner / Frankie Carroll / Suicide / Johnny / Rocky / Fool’s Gold / Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed / Opium Trail / Got To Give It Up / Róisín Dubh (Black Rose) - A Rock Legend / Sugar Blues / Angel Of Death / This Is The One / The Holy War.
Phil was once asked what it was like to be Black and Irish....he replied...."Like a Guiness"....saw them here in Nola....1977?...they opened for Journey....
Saw them around 78 , I remember Teenage me loving this song when they had the lights flashing and sirens blaring, fun exciting times, thanks y’all!
I love the drumming in this tune. Songs like this which have groovy breaks in the other instruments allow the drums to shine a bit more, and they put it to damn good use on this one.
Thin Lizzy was way bigger in Europe than they ever were in the States. You should here Emerald from this same album
Saw these guys open for Queen in Springfield Mass!
Best show I ever saw!!
Phil Lynott the lead singer and bass player was unusual for an Irish rocker in that he was bi-racial, his father being from British Guiana. He struggled with drugs a lot of his adult life, and died of complications of septicemia, complicated by drug and alcohol abuse in 1986.
Yessssss. Thin Lizzy definitely doesn't get enough recognition. This came out when I was a kid, but I still play it all the time.
Very influential and respected among musicians. You have good taste. Kind of hear where they influenced ACDC in this one.
Love the hair Lex! Super cute! I also love that you have a little bit of rock n roll in you!! ❤️ You two should do The Boys Are Back from Thin Lizzy. Thx for the reaction; love watching you guys.
I think the unique sound stems from the writing of songs were written around the bass versus the guitar as lead. Phil Lynott was the lead vocalist plus the bassist so I think the focus of the band and the songs were around him.
Classic Thin Lizzy. Like others have said, a highly underrated band of the 70s.
You should listen to 'Cold Sweat'...now that's a catchy riff :)
This Lizzy was cool AF!
They may not be all that popular, in general.....but they have definite distinction among old school rockers like me!
I was brought up with this band!! They had so many great songs and I'm sure could have had a long lasting career if Phil hadn't died when he did.
Check out 'Don't Believe A Word' & 'Cold Sweat' by Thin Lizzy.
Phil also paired up with once Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore on a few tracks.
'Out in The Fields' it's an amazing song 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Phil Lynott, every inch a rock star, and a massive Manchester United fan too!
He’ll do for me.
RIP.
good call. Simple riffs-Satisfaction, Sunshine Of Your Love, Back In Black- are often simple genius
Yaaas! Thank you. They were the backup band for Queen in 1977. Love Phil Lynott...gone to soon.and he was very sexy too!
Classic double guitar. RIP Phil. Shredders!
One of my oldest brothers favourite bands - I grew up listening to Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, ELO, Supertramp, Black Sabbath, Roxy Music etc from as early as I can remember (about 4 years old). Always thought Thin Lizzy had a cool sound and Phil was super cool.
Phil Lynnot is a legend 😎. He died way to young :-(. He has a statue in his hometown of Dublin Ireland and the inspired bands like Metallica snd many others. Every metalhead knows Thin Lizzy :-)
Very underrated band, and I'm not shocked that somebody hasn't redone this with a fresh sound not that it needs it
well, there is the completely unnecessary cover version of Whiskey in the Jar already.
I know it's an old irish folk song (Dubliners have a nice version) But Metallica just straight copied Thin Lizzy.
When someone calls Thin Lizzy underrated I know they know nothing about music.
@@PanglossDr apparently you don't know shit LMAO
@@PanglossDr I half agree with that. But I do think TL is slightly outside the range of casual Classic Rock fans. But yeah everyone I know fucks with TL and has for decades.
Checkout a band called Slave Raider on UA-cam. They did a rockin’ remake years ago.
Simple guitar riff + delicious vocal melodies = 🔥
SO SO SO glad they finally got to this one!! Such a badass song! The powerchord riff is just brutal! I know Thin Lizzy fans know that they have lots of great songs other than this and The Boys Are Back in Town, but this one is my fav!
One of my favorite bands. Johnny The Fox and Thunder and Lightning are fire. This Is The One is such an amazing song. Thin Lizzy basically invented that twin guitar shred sound.
Great band that bridged the gap between the late 60"s and early 70's hard rock bands and bands like Iron maiden, Megadeth, and Metallica.
Finally!, should react to "Dancing in the Moonlight", "Soldier of Fortune", "Rosalie" and so much more by them!
Thin Lizzy is a favorite band for sure... You should do a reaction to his biography documentary.
Oh yeah ,, gotta love Thin Lizzy !!! Yes , it is the 70s !!!
This is one of those fantastic late night empty road driving fast songs. The riff is just incredible. I can almost hear the engine revving in the song.
Love love love this. Took me right back to 1976 when I bought this album which I still have and listen to regularly.
There's a statue to Phil lynott,, lead singer, song writer, poet and bassist of Thin Lizzy who you just heard, in my hometown of Dublin, Ireland. It makes me proud of where I come from. He was a legend. There are far better Lizzy songs, if you want to go deeper. Stunningly talented band.
Thin Lizzy Jailbreak Live and Dangerous is a must listen to for you guys, you will love it.
Thin Lizzy best listened to live. Killer rock band
This band was soo cool back in the day.
Of course everyone was shocked to see the lead singer was black! How many black Irish rockers are there back in the 70's haha.
kind of a reverse of some other bands who sound black.
These guys freaken ROCK OUT! Phil Lynott is a freaken legend !!!!
They were very popular in my area. But I grew up with Joe Anthony on the radio, and he always turned us on to the best tunes! Phil Lynott was awesome! RIP
I love Thin Lizzy! Phil Lynott was something else. Check out Dancing in the Moonlight. Great tune.
Thin Lizzy was huge in the mid to late 70’s. Unfortunately frontman Phil Lynott passed away at a young age
You’re right Lex. I think timeless is the word you’re looking for. Love you guys reactions
Thin Lizzy has a huge catalog and many great songs were not given radio play as they certainly deserve. Some of those songs I would suggest would be "Showdown" which ends with a "Santana-ish" style jam finale, "She knows" and for some pure Funk "Johnny the fox meets Jimmy the weed"......
Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson on the guitars and a very underrated Brian Downey on the drums. You should check out Philip Lynott from his Solo In Soho album from 1980. King's Call. A song about the night Elvis Presley died. Has Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits on guitar
I agree with everyone here. Very underrated band. They are from Ireland where they have a statue erected in honor of this band. Check out Cowboy Song and Rosealie. Both are phenomenal. I really appreciate you both. You Rock!
It's got a great beat, and you can dance to it!
Thin Lizzy were an epic band they just never got the commercial success that they should have. Phil Lynott was charisma personified, the coolest Irish man ever!
The most underrated of any underrated bands. They're so underrated I'm surprised anyone has heard of them.
Well, in Europe they're huge, right up there with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
@@erikthompson619 I know Erik. This was supposed to be a sarcastic comment about commenters commenting that this band or that band is so-o-o-o underrated.
My first rock concert was Queen with Thin Lizzy as the opener. Great show!
One of my favorite bands
Definitely 1970's, about 76 or 77. First album I ever bought. Outstanding musicians
Fantastic band! 'Still in love with you' from the album 'Live and Dangerous' is an absolute must for a reaction from you guys (Please!)
The amazing Brian Downey on drums!
...i just want to say to brad that you are so impeccably perfect at interrupting a song at the very most crucial/inopportune time and robbing it of all momentum and feeling and i thank you for that ha
...we don't care about your random pragmatic thoughts halfway through the damn song jeez
...what a total buzzkill...every.single.time ha 😎
I love me some Thin Lizzy! You ought to do "The Legend Of The Black Rose", "Bad Reputation", "Rocker" or "China Town"
One of the best guitar duos in rock history. Great tandem leads too.
One of the best bands ever. Under appreciated in the US. Brad picked up on Phil’s unique charisma. I love the band’s twin guitar attack (RIP Gary Moore). Listen to Cowboy Song.
such a good song.
been trying to get this song on a stream for a long time. so glad you guys finally did it. thanks love y'all
Thin Lizzy was was on our radar in the 70's. Always a good band....
Some guitar greats have played with Phil over the years starting with Eric Bell, then Brian Robertson, Scott Gorham, and also Gary Moore and John Sykes who then went on to play with Whitesnake and his own band Blue Murder.
First song I ever learned on bass back in 1986 was Jailbreak. And Lex, you are lovely ❤
Lex your rite amazing gold band from the past !😁
I'm a HUGE Lizzy fan. I played in
"Chinatown a Tribute to Thin Lizzy" and seeing Lex smile and groove during the song is truly better than attempts at verbal descriptions of Thin Lizzys music.
Phil was a genuine Superstar and his lyrical content is well known among musicians around the world. I was really pleased and surprised to see you did reactions to several other Lizzy songs I plan to listen to next.
I could suggest 30 songs by TL that you could use and after 20 great ones you will see why TL fans are blown away that the world knows so little of this almost gigantic Legendary Rock and Roll Band.
I suggest Hollywood or ANY song from Renegade then onto the Thunder and Lightening record their last and best IMO
I grew up on this music. The lead singer was a badass brawler. He was a rough and tough dude!!!!!
We used to call them "Skinny Lizard"... but we loved this band back when I was in High School
Best Irish rock band ever. RIP Phil Lynott.
I've always loved the song Bad Reputation. Great drumming
The entire album this is from, (funnily enough called, 'Jailbreak', from 1976), doesn't have a single skipper on it. There's consistent quality from beginning to end. The most well-known tracks are, obviously, the title track, (here), and, 'The Boys Are Back In Town', but there's others worthy of listening to. 'Angel From The Coast', 'Running Back', 'Warriors', 'Cowboy Song', and, 'Emerald', are the ones which immediately come to mind. There are plenty from other albums too. 'Dancing In The Moonlight (It's Caught Me In It's Spotlight)', 'Bad Reputation', 'Chinatown', 'Waiting For An Alibi', 'Do Anything You Want To', 'Sarah', 'Black Rose.' The list goes on..
