Well done guys! It is just fantastic that you’ve discovered this magnificent band, Thin Lizzy, that came out of Ireland in the early 1970’s! I’m very impressed with your reaction to this live performance of their hit “The Boys are Back in Town. Their signature sound was the dynamic twin lead guitar sound, incorporating guitar harmony and guitar duel that nobody had done before. Later, the Eagles tried it out very successfully with Hotel California…. To get another early sample of this sound, take a listen to “Suicide” by Thin Lizzy from 1975.

Phil Lynott (vocals & bass) of Thin Lizzy was a black Irishman and a legend in rock music🤘🤘He tragically passed away in 1986 from organ failure after years of heroin abuse... 😪
Phil Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in Ireland in the late 60's... legendary guitarist Gary Moore was a friend and helped him get started... Lynott was the main songwriter, and Lizzy started breaking big in the early 70's w/ drummer Brian Downey and guitarist Eric Bell. When Bell quit... 2 guitarists joined- Scott Gorham & Brian Robertson... they established Thin Lizzy's 'twin lead guitar sound' that influenced everybody from Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, etc...
In 1976, their album 'Jailbreak' became a huge global hit, even in the US. Their live album 'Live & dangerous' is considered 1 of the best live records in rock music.
Unfortunately, problems w/ Robertson led to his exit by 1979... by 1981, drugs and declining record sales started to wear out the band. In 1983, Lizzy recorded their final studio album 'Thunder and lightning' and announced that they were breaking up after the tour. John Sykes was on guitar w/ Scott Gorham, and this video was from that '83 tour.
Phil Lynott was considering bringing back Thin Lizzy by 1985, but his death in early '86 ended that possibility.

Phil Lynott (the singer) was born in Hallam Hospital in West Bromwich, England, and christened at St Edward's Church, Selly Park, Birmingham. His mother, Philomena Lynott, was born in Dublin and his father, Cecil Parris, was from Georgetown, British Guiana. Philomena met Parris, who had moved to England to seek work, in Birmingham in 1948 and they were in a relationship for a few months, until Parris was transferred to London. Shortly afterwards, Philomena found she was pregnant and, after Lynott was born, she moved with her baby to a home for unmarried mothers in Selly Park, where he was baptised on 4 September. Phil Lynott was introduced to music through his uncle Timothy's record collection, and became influenced by Tamla Motown and The Mamas & the Papas. He joined his first band, the Black Eagles in 1965 as a lead singer, playing popular covers in local clubs around Dublin. Towards the end of 1969, Lynott and Downey were introduced to guitarist Eric Bell via founding member of Them, keyboardist Eric Wrixon. Deciding that Bell was a better guitarist, and with Lynott now confident enough to play bass himself, the four formed Thin Lizzy.

OH WOW! I get a little emotional watching your reactions sometimes. I love Thin Lizzy and the great Phil Lynott (RIP) so this does my heart good seeing you enjoying it as you do. I would absolutely love to see you react to "The Cowboy Song". It is my favorite of theirs BUT I would be equally intrigued to see your reaction to "Still In Love With You" from this same concert. Sade later covered that one and her version is almost equally heartfelt and brilliant. I would be completely happy with either.

Thin Lizzy were a great band, pioneering a sound combining hard rock with pub rock. They are from Ireland. Other great songs of theirs: ''Still In Love With You,' 'Cowboy Song, 'Jailbreak' and 'Dancing In The Moonlight.' :)

saw these guys back in the late 70's
half way through the shows the shut the doors to stop people coming down stairs.
those upstairs knew the playlist and what was coming.
I turned to my girlfriend at the time, she very conservative, her first live rock show, and told her to have a look at the stands.
They were jumping down from the balcony to get to where the action was.
And yes, the knickers went down that night.
if you want to get into this band, just go straight to "live and dangerous".

So many eras in this band. Hippie/folk rock from 1970 to 1973, then a soul album (Nightlife) then album rock with folk influences until they released a metal album in 1983.

AND that is how We rocked in the 70s, yes it was every gangs, every group of friends anthem, there is a full-on swagger hits you when this song comes on, you stand taller suck in the stomach, the aches and pains go away, and you are back to your prime, if only the affects lasted longer...... Is it really 45 years ago?

Anything from this concert is an absolute blast. Btw this line-up was made up of an Irish bassist/singer/songwriter, a keyboardist and drummer also from Ireland, an English guitar player and an American guitar player.

@@kingstumble Thank you for your reply. A friend informed me that Irish television(RTE) showed a great documentary a few weeks back which showed the house where Phil grew up and the school where he met Brian Downey(Phil always referred to Brian as the one & only) as they were obviously childhood friends. There is also early home film footage not seen before and some early photographs also previously unseen. There is also interviews with childhood and school friends and former girlfriends. Eric Bell the original guitarist is also in this documentary. It also goes to your neck of the woods as Phil wanted to find his father and it shows where the band stayed in London as they were trying to make it into the music industry. It is a new documentary. I dont know for certain the title of this documentary but it is something like the "Return of the Wild One". It literally follows in the footsteps of the band. As you know there is a statue of Phil in Dublin. Brian Connolly the Scotish comedian made a lot of programmes about Ireland and in one episode he visits Phil's grave and coincidentally meets Phil's mom at the graveside. This clip is available on You Tube. Thin Lizzy were absolutely fantastic. I know they opened for Queen in 1976/77 and I am not sure if it is an urban myth but according to some musical historians Thin Lizzy were so brilliant at rehearsals and sound check that Brian May wanted to shorten their time on stage when they opened up. A lot of people who were at these gigs say Thin Lizzy blew Queen off stage. I know that Thin Lizzy opened for Journey in the USA. Thim Lizzy would be a hard act to follow for any band. Also in the aforementioned documentary there is an interview with Brush Shiels who is Irish and a virtuoso on the guitar and actually thought Phil to play bass. Brush Shiels was in an Irish band called " Skid Row" and there was a legal case in the late 1980's as the American rock band "Skid Row" with Sebastian Bach on vocals obviously wanted to use the name "Skid Row". Keep rockin to Thin Lizzy and stay safe in these challenging times.
