I've never been this early! Emma, I'm 51(an old lady) and I think you are one of the most intelligent, well-read and well-spoken creators on this platform. You are so lovely and a joy to watch. I truly hope one day you can flee the city and move to someplace that inspires you. I'd like to tell you to settle for nothing less than that bc tho you're young, you'll be older in no time. It flies by!
I, like you, love nature. A year ago(after 4 yrs of planning and saving) my husband moved us to Maine which was a lifelong dream. I'm in the forest now surrounded by trees and it's been overall the best decision, tho not without it's hard parts. We moved from a city in the Midwest where I'd lived for 30 years. I really hated it...the noise, the concrete, the congestion, lack of green spaces. All my life I have been so drawn to Maine with the ocean, mountains and trees. My love of Stephen King's books sparked this from the time I was 10.
I wish for you many years of contentment and peace ahead. You deserve ALL the good days and wonderful people and memories, glaciers and forests, flowers and the seasons in all their glory. Keep being you with your beautiful soul. There are great days ahead filled with what you love. ❤❤❤

Something I find strangely comforting is that in almost every classic I read there are characters who express some feeling of “what has the world become”. It’s a reminder that there have always been people who look up one day and struggle to recognize the world around them. This sense of dislocation and disillusionment, which is so lonely and painful, must be universal.
Maybe we seem prone to thinking of our experience as unprecedented because, for us as individuals, it is. But each generation has had to adapt to some kind of change. Yes, we grapple with new technology and ideas of progress in our own way-often from a position of moral superiority-and must deal with the consequences, for better or worse. But I think it’s beautiful that the fundamental questions remain the same. How do I truly connect with others? Who and what am I responsible for in this world? There’s a lot of hope in Forster’s resolution: “Only connect”.
But I don’t think “political correctness” is itself what’s keeping us from connecting. I can’t imagine the pressures of being a content creator and having a huge platform, but the whole moral panic around “cancel culture” seems to thrive on appropriating our natural fear of judgement and directing it at each other when we should be looking at the systems that really benefit from reducing people to labels. The corporations who define us as consumers; the politicians who weaponize our human rights to gain voters; the institutions that profit from pathologizing us.
Thanks for another great video Emma! I hope you know how valued you are in the book community 💕💕💕

I personally feel that The House of the Spirits means so much to me as a Chilean, and I consider it such a good book because of the social context in which the story takes place. I feel very reflected in terms of my genealogy with what the characters experience, especially the final part, which is so intense but represents a dark side of my country that I constantly remember. I think that perhaps feeling reflected in the story's social context can influence your perception of the book a bit? idk, maybe thats why i love the book so much, i dont know if that makes any sense. Great videoo emmie i love your vlogs💓

Emma I swear your ads are the only ones I never skip because you make me cackle each time lol
On another note, I adored House of the Spirits but I was also lucky enough to read it before One Hundred Years of Solitude so the comparisson never really occured to me and I wasn't holding it to any other standard. I think the reason I love it so much is my personal background and that of my family, who is mostly Chilean. A lot of what made me really connect with the story and the characters comes from growing up fully immersed in the culture and history, and learning about the dark parts of it since I was a child. I see House of the Spirits more like a historical fiction novel with smudges of magical realism rather than a work of it like One Hundred Years of Solitude is. What moves Allende's story to me is more re-telling parts of real history through her characters and making a sort of portrait of Chilean society at the time, especially by giving voice to many voiceless people (farm workers, women, leftist militants, etc.). At least to me that's the value of it and why I loved it so much ❤

I'd watch blackscreen videos of yours, but there is so much magic in your expressions, gestures, the way you do average things like play with tying up hair, pour tea, open and close books while you speak. These Emma-isms are pure charm. They make the videos feel like visiting with a Friend, vs watching someone talking to a camera teuing to connect but not quite there...

You don't really have to do anything but talk about what you care about. Some people are just lucky this way so enjoy it and stay who you are because that's what has brought us all to watch and listen to you. (and I'm not sure what you think is wrong on this particular day because you are beautiful). The past three weeks have been the worst of my life, and though I'm doing better I am home alone for the first time in a while, and watching your video was just the perfect way to occupy my mind and enjoy my time alone without feeling low. I also just read The Ministry of Time and loved to hear your thoughts on it. My favorite part was the beginning when they got to know each other and 1847 got to know modern times. I'd love a whole book just with them navigating this new situation and him both finding the fun in 2024 and feeling every feeling about losing his own time and the people in it. I work with people twice my age and they are doing the same things that I am doing now. They work in the week, go out in the weekend, go on a vacation here and there and i just feel like is this it? I don't want to be in the same place after another 23 years. It's been hard to accept that it might be the case though. I may move cities even countries but as long as I am in the corporate world, will anything truly change?

Dear Emma, your musings in your final review of The Ministry of Time reminded of the poetry of Brazilian poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade, which I've read recently. "Here is the grim, the widower, the inconsolable, the crow, the never-more, the come too late to a world too old."
(this is a free translation by me; I'm not sure if it exists in English).
Drummond's poetry talks of the exhaustion and inhumanity brought upon us by modernity, by fast worldwide communication, by weapons of mass destruction, by the automatization of the simplest tasks. It was written over 50 years ago but I find it hauntingly relevant. I'm not sure if you like reading poetry, but if you do, I would very much recommend him.
Thank you for your passionate and thoughtful account of your experience with this book. It's right up there in my TBR!

Even if the book is good, it still is copying someone else's idea. And the tv show was brilliant...and already copied by US tv. Imagine how discouraging it is for the people who created that concept and executed it so brilliantly (some episodes brought people to tears) to see everyone profiting from stealing something.
Not a criticism of you, personally. I've seen many people read this book not knowing what had happened. But since you know, it's a bit disappointing to see you're so ok with it. When this woman will be sued and hopefully the law will punish her for her literal crime.

I've not read this book but I feel that one of the reasons reading a diverse range of genres and from different places helps is that it shows that while we might fundamentally want the same things for ourselves and our loved ones, the way we're perceived and treated in the world is based on a set of arbitrary physical and cultural distinctions that most of us can never escape from. Humanizing the dehumanized should be something every decent person should agree on and I've frequently got that compassionate and empathetic vibe from you to know you can understand this on deeper level.

Dear Emma, I am so happy you opened up about your experience with this book (Ministry of Time). I did not read it. Funny enough I've seen a review on' UA-cam and the person had a completely different experience. I might read it sometimes in the future. Even if you did not talk a lot about it, I think I feel similar about the 'period' that we are in. I am always struggling between two mindset. One is that I am grateful to live as a 25 y.o woman in the country that I was born in (France). 60 years ago things would have been restricting to say the least. I might struggle everyday as an autistic (and queer) person but I think we have made clear we want a place in society and it is legitimate. On the other hand, social media, consumerism, city life, desk job, never felt sometimes I could fit into. I feel extremely isolated and maybe it is my incomprehension of others that makes me feel like that. But I feel like people are playing a 'game' I'd rather not. I also get what you mean about the carefulness people have to use and especially on the internet. I love getting into debate and I love getting to know pple's arguments or point of view. But the way things get so heated up very quickly irl and on the internet makes it hard to actually debate with others. Anyway, I might read the MoT, I I'll be cool because I've never read a time traveling book. Again thank you for your beautiful and honest content on this platform!

Im just a random passerby that has seen a few of your videos. I like your personality and energy, so I would have no issue watching a blank screen and hearing you talk about anything, really.
The sense of being "misplaced" or "lost" in time is something that reminds me of my trip to Mexico when I was five. Having lived in the rural Californian countryside, I existed in a pocket of life where not much changes at all. Then suddenly my family went on a trip back to their little village for Christmas. It wasn't a culture shock more than it was an era shock. The village had no running water, no electricity, no gas, nothing that ran on those things, no telephones, and only a few kids. While there, I got lost following a herd of goats, had molten plastic dripped onto my thumb by the bigger kids, ran roof top to roof top on wooden beams, and saw maybe one of the last Posadas of the little village before many of the people abonded it for the big city. If I didn't hear the stories from my family and vividly remember it all, it would have seemed a dream. A lost fragment of time in my memories.

When I first watched The Girl and Her Cat, I was also put off by how the cat was perceiving his owner - found out after the fact that Shinkai made that anime for a girl he was in love with at the time to encourage her to get over some of the difficulties she was going through at the time, which explains all of the weird, un-catlike and borderline pervy behavior the cat exhibits, especially when you take into consideration that in that original anime, Shinkai himself voices the cat. (The manga you read is based on the anime, like all of Shinkai's manga is.)
I find that Shinkai in general has a thing for Women Suffering Beautifully and men of various relations to them Perceiving Them and Being There For Them, which to me always reads like some sort of male fantasy fulfillment and is one of the reasons I don't like him very much 😅
Anyway, thought you might be interested in that tidbit of information.

I just wanted to say that I feel the same way when I record my episodes, I feel like everything I say needs to be perfect, or I need to clarify everything so it won't be misunderstood. :/ Thanks for sharing this thoughts with us. I will definitely be reading the book.

We was going deep at the end! 🤔 I love that the book had such an impact on you that it really got you thinking about so much, I love when a form of art can ignite that critical thinking and make us look at modern life and daily habits almost in a new lens again. I definitely felt the weight of the book spoken in the start and end of this video.
Aside from UA-cam I no longer use social media because I do agree with you with the pressures and paranoia it places on people and that public perception is incredibly draining. Some days you don’t want to be viewed for every visible moment of your life and being critiqued on every detail of it.
I can’t imagine on your level as a content creator and the para social relationship it creates for so many and the perception people have on you- both positive and negative- and the way that can effect your mental health on the regular.
But just giving some good vibes and respect to you for entertaining so many and making them feel closer and like they have their own community through a book channel about books, life, thoughts, feelings and some cats along the way. 🫂

Jeez, girl, you made me cry at the end. I must read Ministry of Time, like right now!
I want you to know that i see you, i see your struggle, and i see your strength. I also see that you have what it takes to get through this awkward stage of adulthood.
I don't want to do the whole "when i was your age" thing ... so I'll say this. Im 2 years away from 50 and i am sorry this is the world we are handing to you. I think we assumed the technology was going to be a net benefit to mankind, but i see that it has caused more loneliness than a prison cell ever could. Break free of it. Technology dulls all the human virtues and amplifies all it's vices. If i could set off an EMP i would.

I thought I was gonna cry when you said that thing about being an adult and realizing this is what it means. Kafkaesque. But no, not really. That only applies to you if you think you know. She who thinks she knows does not know; she who knows she doesn't know knows. And nobody knows, you know? Emma, I'm sorry but you're learning how to think for yourself, which means you get to be a student for the rest of your life. And your life is what you create it to be.

Emma, this was such a beautiful video. From what you said, it seems like The Ministry of Time approaches many important issues that are in our minds right now... many things under the umbrella of how it is to live in this world sorrounded by machines, internet, lack of social interaction, lack of attachment to nature and to what is real, and all of the repercussions of these things. It is almost impossible to me not to have a romantic mentality that things *had* to be better in the past.. somewhere in the past. But maybe not.
But now, I just wanted to say that you are an amazing person. I'm really glad of being able to hear your beautiful thoughts.

I haven’t read it in like 20 years (I’m about to pick it up - yes I’m late for the GoT) but I distinctly remember it being my least favourite of the three because, at some point, Frodo and Sam going around in circles being hungry and thirsty got a little old… 😅 The book is still amazing, of course, but…

I think I had a similar experience with Isabel Allende - I was excited to try ‘House of the Spirits’, but decided to start with one I already had on my shelf, ‘Long petal of the sea’. It’s hard to put my finger on what I didn’t like because the story was fast-paced and the writing adept, but it just felt dead to me. Maybe the issue was the translation. For whatever reason, despite all the shocking things happening to and around the characters, I couldn’t care about any of them and I was bored. So I’ve lost interest in reading ‘House of the Spirits!’ Sooo pleased you’re having such a wonderful time with lotr, it’s my happy place ☺️
