The best alternative to fabric softener and dryer sheets is distilled vinegar; the stronger the percentage the less you require. I buy mine from The Home Depot, Harris brand; and that one is potent at 30%, so all I use is UP TO 1/4 cup depending on my laundry load. DO NOT MIX vinegar with detergent, super washing soda, or Oxi brand additives; use it solely as a substitute for fabric softener.

The only use for fabric softener is if you have ridiculously hard water. Before we got a whole house water softener, we had to use fabric softener, else the clothes would come out with the consistency of crumpled cardboard and feel like sandpaper.
Didn't matter what settings you used. Hot, cold, anywhere in the middle, all different wash cycles, different brands of detergent, always got crumpled cardboard.
You didn't need gallons of fabric softener, just a tiny bit worked fine.

So i use washing machine cleaner packets (OxyClean and Affresh Tabs) once a week as well as running cleaning cycles with hot water and bleach, and hot water and distilled vinegar. Between these three, im cleaning the washer say 12 times per month. Do you think im in good shape here? Washer is about 5 years old

I can almost guarantee your washing machine is in good shape, however, sometimes less is more. As for the affresh pods I recommend sticking to their recommendations.

Most like in the door boot (the rubber part). Check out RMR-86 on Amazon. It’s an aggressive mood and bacteria remover. Make SURE to wear PPE!
