"Radiation operates differently in the Fallout universe"...because of the FEV virus. The Forced Evolution Virus storage facility was hit with a nuclear missile and was aerosolized and spread over much of the US. The radiation also damaged the virus making it's effects much more random. All most all non-vault dwellers are exposed and thus have some immunity towards it, however they are still changed and can devolve into mutants with enough radiation exposer.

Vault 70, with it's malfunctioning jumpsuits, would have been filled with very devout people. All of them would have been left completely naked when their jumpsuits would have failed...not sure what this is experimenting on, but that's all it was. I think it had to do with seeing how devout people, who dress rather conservatively, would react to sudden and effectively enforced nudity.
The Red/Blue vault in New Vegas filled with Powder Gangers when you find it (forgot the number) was set up so that both sides were not fully isolated from each other, they'd have chances to interact and were set up with two overseers (one for each side). There were no true differences in ideology (at first), but massive distrust ended up forming between them (only due to having a different color assigned to them) and they pretty much ended up wiping each other out.
The vault under the school in Fallout 4 (again forgot the number) actually fed the most physically fit to the next generation in an attempt to see if that produced superior humans. The most intelligent were kept alive and joined the research team looking after them. Anyone else was killed at 18 and disposed of as they were not useful towards the experiment.

He didn't really explain Vault 19 well. The general idea was that the vault dwellers were arbitrarily split into a "red" wing and a "blue" wing. The semi isolation was meant to cause tribalism and paranoia. From the various bits of information inside it seems that the residents started distrusting the other group and developing conspiracy theories about them.

vault 101 was trying to turn the overseer into a cult leader/god

  • @manofwarb
    @manofwarb 2 роки тому +91

This video you reacted to did omit some crucial details about some of the vaults.
Vault 19's experiment wasn't just to isolate half the residents from the other half. The experiment was to intentionally select only mentally ill people, segregate them into two sections and then breed paranoia among them about what the other half was doing. It is implied that this group eventually emerged from the vault to form a junkie raider gang called the Fiends.
Vault 75 wasn't set up to create "superior humans", it was created to breed super soldiers. Kids who scored well in mock combat drills would have their DNA harvested while those who performed poorly would be culled. The harvested DNA would be introduced into the next generation so they could "improve" upon it.
Vault 92 never had a super soldier experiment. Instead, its purpose was simply to shelter the nation's top musical talent. The experiment to turn the residents homicidal through subliminal messages was what some scientist in there cooked up on his own. And the overseer encouraged it as "independent research".
Vault 114's experiment wasn't to take average people, promise them "luxury" and then give them spartan living conditions - it would instead accept people used to extreme luxury such as CEOs, billionaires, high ranking government officials with opulent mansions etc and then place them in an overcrowded environment with an apathetic overseer. What they would experience is a clear step down in luxury.
Vault 118 wasn't just about rich people in one area and poor people in another. The rules would be way different too. The rich residents would live in spacious opulent luxury with robot staff waiting on them hand and foot, while the poor residents would live in a barely maintained overcrowded hovel.
The reason the vaults' experiments were so poorly thought out was because Dr. Stanislaus Braun, the "omnipotent" man in charge of Vault 112's experiment was the CEO of Vault-Tec. He is a textbook sociopath who derives pleasure in making people suffer in unique interesting ways, So the experiments were ways he amused himself rather than a means to obtain actually useful sociological data.

I still hold that Vault 76 was indeed an experiment. What other reason would there be for selecting some of the most highly educated and talented people in the US, then making them do all the scutwork necessary to keep the Vault running, rather than bringing in some already-experienced janitors or maybe robots? There were Mr. Handys, but they appear to have been used only as monitors for the Overseer, as the records in the terminals in the Vault indicate some unrest over the assignments. BTW, you might want to read about wolf children. That's a colloquial term for children that grew up in the wild without humans. Studying them says a lot about intelligence, but also some other factors and while it is most definitely a chicken-egg problem, it was found that these kids had an above-average immune system and were near superhuman when it came to their eyesight, ability to see in the dark and smell things!
With regards to the immune system, there might be a survivor bias and then there's the question of why they ended up in the wild in the first place and there, a low intelligence (or autism, etc.) might have been the cause, but it does seem that not learning to talk prevents kids from reaching higher levels of intellect!

The Societal Preservation Program was overseen by Dr. Stanislaus Braun. You might remember him from Vault 112 in Fallout 3, where he spent two hundred years torturing the people unfortunate enough to have been locked into the VR system with him. Most of the "experiments" were just Braun's sadistic idea of fun. Then you go to Vault-Tec University in Fallout 76, and learn that Dr. Braun was also the person who organized Overseer training - which is why the Dean thought that sabotaging the (accidentally final) experiment in the University Vault would be a good idea. (The experiment was to learn if subjects could live indefinitely on a nutrient paste the Overseer candidate had developed; the Dean introduced an agent into the paste that would induce arterial hardening, in order to see what would happen when the students in the Vault started mysteriously dying. Unfortunately, the deaths started about two weeks after the War, so when the students signaled for emergency release they got no answer...)

This video your watching doesn't do a very good job of actually explaining the thought process behind a lot of these. He just states what the experiment was without mentioning the objective or goals.
The "superior humans" for example was built under a middle school and was essentially a Hitler Youth eugenics program. The kids were fed propaganda daily about how they were going to be the saviors of humanity along on top of their physical conditioning. They were told, that once they reached the age of 18 they would be sent out into the world to help the wastelanders or they would become part of the staff. In truth, the ones not fit to be staff (almost everyone) were simply killed. My personal theory on this vault is that the data from the program would have been used for the "Elites" in Vault-Tec and their partners, all the kids there were just expendable guinea pigs, and the kids were never intended to exist beyond that role. In the end, Vault-Tec fell apart, so the data never saw the light of day, and at some point before the program was completed, one generation of kids got wise and shut down the program themselves.
For most of these, it's important to keep in mind that the experiments are satirical hyperbolic examples of what a Corporation with absolute power and no supervision would do with people in their care. Some others are similar to what the Nazis and Japanese were doing with "undesirables" and POWs back in WW2.

Like gun control works cause it worked in a game while ignoring 2 big parts of that vault. 1) the weapons were promised to everybody and 2) it was a smaller vault with more jammed into it. Obviously people aren't going to like it when the thing you're promised in exchange of something else is taken away. Overseer and living spaces were separate, but the common areas were shared. They slowly went insane with paranoia of what 'the other guys' were doing to mess with them. Which parallels the real world when you have little interaction with another group beyond what you've heard about them.
Though half these vaults they selected people predisposed to the type of experiment they were doing anyway so they kinda skewed their results.

The thing about vaults 68 and 69 was the inhabitants kinda all turned on each other over the one male/female. If I remember correctly vault 68, the woman either killed herself or was killed by the men, and 69, the women all ripped the man apart, as both vaults’ water supplies were laced with aphrodisiacs.
As for vault 101 and FO3, it’s actually stated that the overseer had power over everything and everyone in the vault, not diety like but more of a…. mix between a cult leader and authoritarian leader. Again if I’m remembering correctly.

13:15 the original video fails to mention this, but the vault begins cutting off certain things while deploying propaganda that makes it seem like it's the fault of the other half. For example, the food generator on the red side doesn't produce enough for everyone one day. An automated email designed to look like a real one from that side's overseer is sent out to everyone on the red side, condemning the blue side for "sabotaging the food machine for no reason." This continued for a long while.

The video unfortunate leaves out a _lot_ of context to the vault experiments and the nature of the idea behind them, it only gives a barebones overview of each Vault and what went on in it, it doesn't go into detail of how each one did, regardless of the experiment.
Vault 21 for example, the one filled with Gamblers, was an unprecedented success because all arguments and conflict was resolved with gambling and casino games, ironically leading to one of the most well adjusted and thriving communities to be found in any Vault. Also, Vault 13 was described in this video as having the experiment of prolonged isolation, but in actuality was a specific control vault, meant to be kept sealed and safe until a group known as the Enclave, (the designers of the Vault Experiment), could retrieve the vault dwellers. This is told to you by the President of the Enclave in Fallout 2.

    • @martenkahr3365
      @martenkahr3365 2 роки тому +1

IIRC, that bit about Vault 13 being a control vault was something retconned in Fallout 3, because they took a look at the timeline and realised that for plot reasons, the Control Vaults had to open sooner than Vault 13 canonically did for parts of Fallout 3 to make sense, timeline wise. So between several retcon possibilities, they took the one to make Vault 13 into a prolonged isolation social experiment.

    • @darkarpatron
      @darkarpatron 2 роки тому +1

@@martenkahr3365 Hmm, you might be right. Though I remember it as Vault 13 being a Control Vault that was specific to the Enclave's interest, it was suggested, if not said, that this is why the Vault Dweller was exiled at the end of Fallout 1. His presence would've jeopardised the mission of Vault 13, which was akin to remaining closed until it was needed for the Enclave. I could be remembering this _very_ wrong, but that's what I remember.
It's been ages since I've played Fallout 2 all the way through, need to do that again.

However by the time the dwellers realized it, there were only five people alive, due to most of them dying in the civil war caused by the last overseer's decision to change the method of choosing the sacrificed person from voting to the fairer random chance method.

So, the thing about Fallout and the Vault experiments: They're not meant to be taken completely seriously.
While the core of the series is built of the self-destructive nature of mankind, it is presented as a dark comedy and at least partially as a satire of the post-nuclear apocalypse genre. It is a dark setting with thought-provoking themes centered around the nature of war and the fact people would still find reasons to kill each other over inconsequential things.
And then it also has lunatics dressing up as super heroes and giving long-winded speeches about how their armies of robots and giant ants are going to crush each other. You just kind of roll with it.

I think a few things need to be considered when factoring in how much radioactive fallout there would be.
First: the low-tech bombs they'd be dropping mean a lot of misfires or delayed detonations, where the bombs sometimes hit the ground.
Second: The possibility that, to salt the earth, the countries involved would drop bombs up-wind of major metropolitan or agricultural areas, either intentionally detonating at ground level... or using cobalt plating inside the warhead to create a massive f*** ton of radioactive debris that would emit gamma radiation in high volumes for years, if not decades.
Would radiation be as prevalent in 2287 as it was in, say, 2161? Probably not.
But also: Fallout was never really a study in actual physics, so much as it was an exploration of the condition of the human spirit... and asking the question "how cool would it be if I had a pneumatic catapult that fired football sized atom bombs??" and well... now we know.

They sort of glossed over Vault 0. Which is bad because that's supposed to be the command vault where the results of all the other experiments were recorded. The problem is Fallout Tactics isn't necessarily canon. Without it Vault-Tec just started these experiments, and just expected some random scavengers to record the results? Or maybe the Enclave?
I guess on the other hand just they don't have to say things in Fallout Tactics *aren't* true, since it takes place in the midwest which isn't covered by any of the other games. So maybe Vault 0 is still canon even though the game it's in isn't.

through playing the games, (3, NV, 4) It seemed like Vault-Tec expected to come out of the GW unscathed and they would end up being the de facto government post apocalypse. However, it seems that the GW was worse than they expected because the entire VT communication structure fell apart and many of the vaults that finished their experiments were waiting for more orders that never came.

    • @martenkahr3365
      @martenkahr3365 2 роки тому

My understanding is that VT did not expect the Great War to actually happen. They planned to call their intended residents into their designated vaults during a "close call" moment akin to the Cuban Missile Crisis IRL, and just use the isolated nature of the Vaults to keep the subject population oblivious about the fact that nuclear war had been averted until the experiments had run their intended course. But like the rest of the fascist government and corporations of the pre-war Fallout USA, the company was big on information compartmentalisation and expected blind obedience from their employees, so this was never communicated to the lower-level Vault-Tec staff who would be carrying out the experiments either (at least, not as a matter of policy, though rumors and the occasional higher-up breaching infosec to inform a good friend on the ground probably happened).
Records in Vault 101 were fairly obvious in this: the staff did not have anywhere near the supplies to last through the initial radiation period for a real nuclear war aftermath. They expected an "all clear" message from Vault-Tec and treated the whole thing as a vacation, but when the signal never came they freaked out and started sorta-kinda connecting some of the implications, and even then only barely. Many still continued to insist that they had to wait for the "all clear" message from command and this issue came to violent confrontations among staff. The staff, mind you, who were all Vault-Tec employees and aware the whole thing was an experiment from the start, since the "subjects" were only there to test out the cryopod technology instead the Vault of being any kind of social experiment. The Brains of socially esteemed pre-war Fallout Americans on fascism, everyone.

It was stated that the Vault experiments were ultimately meant to test humanity for space colonization which would have involved generational ships and near constant close contact, so the experiments often revolved around that, though that still doesn’t explain the puny sample sizes, but I think that may have had more to do with the Vaults being exorbitantly expensive for the average American, as inflation in Pre-War America was insane, for example, gas was $60~/gallon and a box of donuts in Fallout Tactics was marked as “Only $99!”, so, I think they decided sample groups of 1000 was just going have to suffice

  • @vorastrixaridarastrixiejir403

Regarding vault 19, the experiment consisted of selecting vault dwellers with paranoid tendencies and separating them into two groups. The idea was that all essential system were centralised (like in any vault) and placed in either red or blue sector, leading to any and all malfunction to be blamed on the opposite group.

The whole "thing" over the vault experiments, in all of the Fallout games, is practically all of them weren't devised by scientists but by a corporate committee of administrators. This is why the scientific method was so badly followed. The pre-war Fallout universe was basically 1950's corporate America taken to an extreme, like Robocop was 1980's corporate America taken to an extreme. In the Fallout games workers Unions were Federally banned and anyone trying to create one, before the war, was arrested for Treason.

Hi, I'm a fan of the Fallout series, more specifically the original Fallout 1 and 2 including New Vegas. I'll try to clear up some discrepancies about this world.
Before I start explaining some things, I need to point out one thing that even the players of the series themselves don't know much about. And that is the fact that the experiments in Vaults weren't even intended to be honest and thoughtful experiments from which quality data was supposed to come. They were literally just experiments on rabbits. In fact, before the Great War, the US government decided to concentrate on colonizing another planet, and the Vaults were only one part of the experiments, not the main ones. So we don't know what results they had or didn't have, it could have just been the last experiments that didn't change the final result.
    1. The logic of one experiment for only one vault.
There are several reasons why this is so. First, the Vault is not cheap so building several of them for one experiment would not make sense. Additionally, prior to the Great War in the Fallout world, society was going through a crisis where there was a lack of resources and too many people. Another reason is simply because they failed to build more Vaults just because of the war. There are a total of 122 known Vaults and most of them are unknown. The word "known" is also important, as there may be dozens of unknown Vaults. Moreover, this number exists only to be. The writers can always adjust this number, not to mention that we know nothing about the rest of the world where other Vaults may be.
    2. The different effect of radiation in Fallout compared to the real world.
The first thing is this. Ghouls can't have children, and it's never been said how long Ghouls live. There are Ghouls who lived through the Great War so they're a couple hundred years old.
The explanation is not necessarily that it is a different universe and a different planet Earth where different physical laws apply. It must be remembered that the world of Fallout has a completely different evolution since World War II than the real one. In Fallout there was a boom in nuclear power which made the technology much further advanced than our real one. Plasma/laser/electric weapons, robots with very advanced AI, cars with almost unlimited drive, power armors, etc. So it's safe to assume that people in Fallout had a much better understanding of nuclear power and other advanced things. The atomic bombs may have had something that affected the radiation differently not to mention ejecting things like the FEV virus that made various animals including humans mutate, experiments with creatures like Deathclaw and other things. The U.S. military was also developing biochemical weapons that could easily destroy large populations of people so who knows what was released into the air after the atomic bombs were dropped and what the reaction of the various substances and influences were.
    3. Vault 29
The information in this video was very simplistic and incorrect. This vault was made up of children but under the age of 15 and from wealthy families, including adults who were close to death due to either age or illness. The experiment was that this Vault was equipped with a supercomputer that used robots to educate the children to a primitive life and after some time let them out. However, this didnt actually happen thanks to Diana Stone (a cyborg, originally a brilliant human scientist) taking control of the Vault after the war broke out. She continued in the original plan to raise the children but in doing so sent robots outside the Vault to pave the way for a new community when the Vault could be abandoned. Diana was then worshipped as a "goddess" by the original inhabitants of the Vault.
    4. Vault 70
Vault 70 was populated only by members of the Mormon faith. Why such an experiment? Why not? As I've written before, the Vault epxeriments weren't even intended to be serious experiments with good data. In fact, they were simply the work of demonic thought and amusement.
    5. Vault 75
While I understand the argument about how we are already superior as a people, I don't understand it in the context of this vault. In short, this Vault was about editing genes to further enhance the human genome. After the age of eighteen, those who were highly intelligent and physically fit were killed to research their genes and body in general, those who were not physically fit but still smart and obedient became the scientists involved in this research. The others were killed after their eighteenth birthday.
    6. The concept of the super soldier.
It's a clichéd idea but it was realistic in the world of Fallout. Perhaps the problem most people who know Fallout have is how they understand this world. Because they look at this world through the lens of our real world and this time. It's just that the world of Fallout had a different evolution after World War II and thel world was not destroyed until 2077. Then the games take place several hundred years later. So we are talking about a different time, a different history, different technologies, different mindsets.

Vault 19s story and experiment is a bit more complicated that the narrator says, which is understandable given the number of Vaults. Vault 15 was just four ideologically opposed groups intermingling and seeing what would happen.
Vault 19 was made to separate two otherwise-identical groups and see what would happen when things on either side's area started going awry. Misplaced (other otherwise-missing) supplies, maintenance failings, illness and sickness, etc. Eventually the paranoia on both sides aimed at the other caused a massive revolt that ended up killing pretty much everyone.

So originally in fallout 1 the idea behind the Vaults and eventually the Enclave was that nuclear annihilation would leave the world barren and humanity would need to leave Earth to survive. Thus the vault experiments in Fallout 1 had the purpose of testing technology that would be needed for the long term voyage and while this tech would be tested the Enclave would be making the spaceship while making changes discovered in the Vaults. However while they were making 2 Tim Cain and a few of the other lead designers left the game thus this overarching plot idea was abandoned which has led to a mishmash of experiments with radically different purposes.

To expand a little on what Paul said about male-to-female ratios in traditional societies, there is sizeable evidence that this is one of the main sources of patriarchy throughout Europe and Asia
See, going back to prehistoric, pre-agrarian tribal societies, tribes and villages sent their males to hunt not because they were inherently better at it, but because that way, if a whole hunting party was wiped out, the village could still survive. Obviously, males had a slight advantage in both athletic ability and aggression what with the extra testosterone, but look at it this way : you have 20 males and 20 females in your village. If you send 15 women out and they die, then as Paul explained, the remaining 5 cannot produce enough children to restore the population for the next generation. However, if you lose 15 men instead, the other 5 can realistically balance out the losses by inseminating about 3 women each every 1 or 2 years at the most. There would be a little bit of inbreeding going on sure, but necessity sometimes dwarfs morality (besides, not like they would have known about that back then, and also, one generation's worth of inbreeding actually carries no negative consequences, it's when it's done over multiple generations that you gotta start to worry)
So once people started to organise into more complex hierarchies, they were already used to having men go out and do dangerous tasks while women stayed within the safety of city limits and handled house chores, so couple that with previously mentioned male aggressiveness over a few hundred years and boom, it is now commonly accepted that women are weak and that their only contribution to society is being brood mares
This is also one of the many reasons why most North American native tribes, who remained tribal and spiritual for millenia, were still matriarchal by the time Europeans came around (same logic applies to some other groups around the world, but those are the only ones I could remember off the top of my head). Without the rapid technological process that the latter experienced, they were still subject to the harsh conditions that forced this gender division (including regular war with other tribes), thus they understood that it was born from practicality and not stupid shit like divine decree or universal truth or other dumb religious crap 😁
P.S. : if you want an example of those societies that punished unpartnered members as Paul briefly mentioned, look no further than the Spartans, who famously trained every child to be a warrior, even the girls, and less famously were very concerned with only reproducing amongst themselves, and would thus restrict the political involvement of citizens who were not married and even those who were married but hadn't yet had children. Yes, the Spartans were like New Vegas' Boomers 😂

Why is it every damn time people just ignore the history of vault 11. It has a more interesting history than half the vaults in the video (=_=).
Basically every year they sacrifice their leader to a machine. The conditions of the Experiment(but not all of them. He didn't know about the rejection) were known by their first vault keeper(as with most vaults - the keeper was a Vault tech employee). But the people found out that they had to sacrifice someone and they very quickly chose their first keeper. And so the tradition went that their vault keeper was the sacrifice. And the guilty ones are appointed to this role. (While maintaining their control over the vault). And so after a while they formed voting blocks. And it ended up that one block had too much power. They got so cocky that they started blackmailing other people or they chose them or their loved ones . That's what happened to one woman. Who was blackmailed into giving sexual favors to the block to save her husband. She agreed, but they decided to elect her husband anyway. She started killing them, and when they caught her, they made her the keeper. And she took advantage of the power. She abolished the election system. Ordering that from this day forward, the keeper would be chosen by a random number generator. The block didn't like that because there was a very small chance of one of them getting elected. They resisted. And the other blocs came out against them because didn't want to give them power back.
A war broke out in which they killed each other.
And so when there were five people left. They decide that's enough. They refuse to make the sacrifice. And the machine congratulates them for their "humanity." That there will be no punishment. And that's all they had to do the whole time, and that after that the machine would no longer require victims and would open the vault door (which was locked).
The survivors, upon learning of this, went insane and shot themselves before leaving the vault. Except for the fifth. He didn't make it. He dropped the gun and fled into the wasteland. His fate is unknown.

Vault 43 is the best evidence that the researchers had run out of ideas and were just messing around. You just know that someone was snickering while thinking about the 20 men arguing about who was going to get one of the 10 women, all the while, the panther was silently being released.

To give a couple of reasons as to why radiation works differently in the Fallout Universe? They went full on into nuclear energy, even making small energy cores and a shoulder mounted mini-nuke launcher. Everything produces radiation.

Fallout Lore 101: The powers that be of Vault Tech aren't altruists or scientists, but sadists.

I'm not an expert when it comes to Fallout lore but from what I can remember from the top of my head I know that Vault Tech, the company that is responsible for the creation of all the vaults we see in the games have their own university in which they train future staff members for Vault Tech. I'm a little fuzzy on the details but didn't Vault Tech base at least most of their Vault experiments on essays or ideas the students came up with? I'm not sure about the details(again) but if most of the experiments don't make sense and are either stupid or goofie it's probably because they were most likely thought up by a (possibly drunk) college student.

I think they did. They also had the final exam for each student be another experiment. The last one ever performed involved the faculty secretly lacing the overseer candidate's experimental food formula with blood clotting agents, resulting in a murderous riot and suicide of the poor sap after people started dying.

It might sound strange to react to but do you think you could react to the dialogue and storylines of Caeser/Mister House from Fallout New Vegas? I don't know why but I feel like you'd have a lot to say on them

In fallout not everyone exposed to radiation turns into ghouls. Most I think just die like one normally does, ghouls are the rare case where it transforms you instead of killing you.

i think they used omnipotent in the sense that the overseer would know all that happens in the vault and of course have the most absolute power/control of anyone in the vault
