Just for context, the reason why Belka nuked their own territory was because at this point in the war, they were on the losing side and were on the verge of being defeated and occupied. Since Belkans are very proud and slightly crazy, they dropped the nukes in desperation to scare off the allied forces. It should also be noted that nuclear weapons are EXTREMELY rare in the setting, so MAD doctrine doesn't exist. Their ploy succeeded because it caused the Allied forces to back off from invading Belka and come to the negotiating table.
Also a lot of the Afghanistan/Iraq undertones were mostly inserted by Max0r himself. The actual game is basically loosely based on Arthurian legend except in fighter planes.

Yeah Belka's attitude was "Well if we can't have it no one can" when it came to their own territory, and nuked their borders to prove it. Their whole schtick was national pride "we are the best" rhetoric cranked to 11... reminds me of russia these days actually.

15 years ago, there was a war. Well, war's broken out here plenty of times before. They've tried to invade the southlands through the northern valley time and time again. Luck was never on their side though, and their victories didn't last long. They didn't realise that times had changed. Facing one defeat after another, losing territory and watching their nation dwindle, they built up their industrial strength to unprecedented heights and used it to wage one final battle against the world. That was 15 years ago. They fought ferociously, but were utterly defeated. The Belkans then committed the unthinkable - they used nuclear weapons on their own soil. Seeing this tragedy unfold before their own eyes, the victorious countries vowed to throw down their weapons. The world was once again at peace. And thanks to them, it seemed it would last forever. On a distant island, far away from civilisation, the protectors of the peace take to the skies.

Some thing i would like to clarify about the game because the it's hard to tell from the game:
the player and pixie are mercenaries contracted by Osea(a leading country) alongside other other countries that dont want belka to invade them or are being invaded.
The missions dont occur one after the other, during briefings the date is showed and while not shown it is assumed the pilots do rest.
The game is really is narrated by a journalist that after some digging found multiple mentions of the player so he interviewed people that he fought and pixie to see if there was something else to the war than the public version.
The game has sorta of a karma system(mercenary, soldier or knight)for shooting or not those buildings that arent military or objectives and disablied enemy aircraft (marked in yellow) and will change the first and third squadron to one that reflects what you represent and give insight about the player, in knight the squadrons are a veteran for until recently was retired and got called back for the war and the other was more a nobleman from a line of knights dedicated to duty

    • @Zanedor
      @Zanedor 2 роки тому +10

In the broad strokes this kind of narrative interlude is a running theme in the Ace Combat series: Outside of game-play we don't typically follow the Player Character, instead we are either following a few different unrelated or tangentially related characters throughout the game's conflict, often through the lens of them sharing an account of events after the war is over. What's more many times some of the character we follow are from the opposing side, sometimes even the enemy aces you face in the game. This tends to give the conflicts in the Ace Combat series an atypically nuanced feel compared to many other milliary stye games, its made clear that the people on the other side are, well, people.

Pixy sounds deranged because he actually did lose it in the game. Max0r is playing it up for laughs, of course, but Pixy actually drops hints in a couple earlier missions that he hates the war, and it's slowly breaking him down. After Hoffnung is burned, he slides right off the cliff, tries to kill Cipher, and vanishes for months. When he reappears at Avalon in the final mission, he's a broken shell of who he was, determined to reset the world to bring an end to pointless wars.
It also makes him a hypocrite, as during "Mayhem", which is the second battle at the Round Table (where Max0r flights Schwarze Squadron), PJ says he's fighting for peace. Pixy tells PJ that believing that "you think you can stop bloodshed by shedding more blood" is a stupid and naive idea, and basically foreshadows his death ("flying around with all those ideas in your head is gonna get you killed"). Yet, in the end, Pixy goes back on this, believing that causing worldwide death and destruction can rid the world of conflict and bring peace to those who come after. A new civilization without borders or differences, unified completely and at peace forever.
Obviously that idea is insane and would never work, but it shows how far he's fallen. A joke in the community around the series is that "war is bad, planes are rad". You think Zero's got a strange story, check out 5. Spies, more nukes, a shadowy organization hell bent on destroying the world so they can rule afterwards, it's nuts the amount of background lore the team put into a game that started out as just a fun shoot shoot game. Ace Combat is basically Metal Gear Solid: Fighter Jet Edition.
For added insanity, check out Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere. The translated Japanese version, because the export version kinda sucked.

It’s odd because years after playing this game, the polish government released a top secret file from the Soviet Union days. Apparently the Soviet government had a similar plan, where they would nuke half of Central Europe to make sure no one cross the border by air and especially land. That was a plan made in the 60’s, 80% of Poland would’ve been vaporized of WW3 started while the USSR was around.

You should definitely play a ace combat game because if you enjoy metal gear games, then chances are high you might enjoy this series too. The best 3 games in the franchise as the fans call "The Holy Trinity" are Ace Combat 4, AC5 and AC Zero which are sadly locked on the PS2 but you can play them using PCSX2 (a ps2 emulator) with a little bit of work and some yt tutorials. Or you can try Ace Combat 7, the latest entry with a simple story that doesn't require much or any previous knowledge of the lore of Strangereal to understand, its also multi-plat so avaliable on steam with the base game being very cheap excluding the ridiculous amount of DLC's which are pretty much new aircrafts and nothing too major. Having worked at an airport and having to go through the TSA screening it really does feel like a song and dance.

Pretty sure it was Sseth, but these words still ring true and it’s exactly why i love the MGS series.
“We have become so absurd that we have crossed from fiction into history.”
It’s honestly what makes metal gear so believable (at times) and good. As insane as the whole series, or just single game, gets… it has a better point and message about the world than most games ever will.
It’s almost like the absurdity of a vampire will make you suddenly remember what the world is like and go: “oh shit, rampant media is a thing.”

A short in-depth about the reasons behind the Belkan War:
Belka controlled territories with different cultures: Rectans, Gebetians, Rationese, Ustian and Osean Indigenous Peoples (FATO).
Osea used diplomatic pressure and economic warfare to dismantle the belkan federation. The reason for doing so being mineral resources in the ustian part of the federation. If Osea helped Ustian nationalists obtain independence, then Ustio would favor Osea in dealing with these resources.

2:20 oh yea, that time sadam hussein invaded Kuwait after he failed to accomplish the task that the US had armed him for, which was to drive out the religious leader of iran who absorbed irans large military which was primarily sponsored by the US again back when iran was under the leadership of a more pro american dictator, a dictator that was so cruel that the Iranians successfully rebelled against him.
its pretty unnerving how everything always leads back to US involvement

      @@Fordo007 very true
back in the times of the british empire these decisions were made from a top down perspective, with the benefactors being the same to hold the power. one would assume that a functioning democracy would view the world from the perspective of a people, not from the high vantage point of the rich and powerful. but the USA are not a functioning democracy.
the question is, are global superpowers and democracy just not combinable ?
does every government with access to large enough power betray its own system to enrich its self?
i would like to believe that a fair and functional democracy and a strong position on the global stage are not mutually exclusive, but in the end history writes its self no matter what our individual hopes are.

Killed everything you could Death to all . 2. Did objectives plus Bonus (Hidden) Money targets or 3. Shot enemy Targets until they Turn Yellow a Mercy can't fight any more but not dead and Not shoot at un involved civilian targets. and Endings and even the Documentary of the game would change and how much money you made per mission and how.

Ukraine? The whole middle east get's sent to medieval times if it opposes certain oil corporations. Total war and colonial war mostly depends on the ability of the opponent to repulse a existentially determined invader. Also the notion that we condition soldiers to not contemplate the bigger picture and moral questions of their actions kinda lay bare that you cannot have a colonial military force without structural ethical bankruptcy. We do not help fight corruption or poverty with soldiers, we don't improve literacy or improve standards of living.

One video and its comments section that I dearly wish you would check out is Raptor Elite's video about two characters; the canon version of the Pixy you saw in this video, who isn't even remotely as batshit as Max0r wrote and voiced him to be, and Crimson 1 of Project Wingman. That's a whole other brand of insanity.
In any case, Project Wingman is openly a love letter to the Ace Combat series and it shows. To the point that clipping these two's in-game dialogue together results in a coherent conversation - and not only that, but Pixy's roasts are almost as effective as his missiles.
    I rewrote and tidied up this, found the original in the comments section of this video in question;
    ---
Imagine that you're a veteran of a war against your own country.
A mercenary, with a past mostly forgotten by time.
A war that ended with the nation of your birth launching nuclear missiles at their own soil in mad desperation.
You nearly did the same, too. Wiped the whole slate clean, in anger at the pointlessness of the war.
Only you didn't manage to, because you were stopped by the only pilot that could humble you.
Once your wingman. Still your buddy.
It stung both of you when it was over.
After *much* soul searching, imagine you decide to join a PMC group with a plan to atone for your sin. You join in the liberation of-
    Wait. Something seems familiar...
As this new war goes on, things decline. Old scars start opening up.
Your new wingmen can barely keep up with you. But you will do anything to keep them alive.
Soon you find yourself defending Presidia, the heart of a nation that wanted its liberty enough to fight for it.
Soon, a truce was in effect. But you're uneasy.
You've seen this before, and you already know how this will go down.
It is as if you're no longer in Cascadia anymore. At the end, you may as well be back at the Avalon Dam as the red of a nuclear winter begins to kick up.
Imagine you can almost fool yourself into thinking it's snow...
Memories of blue skies and a familiar callsigns dance in your head, mocking you.
    You're no longer Hitman 1.
You're fighting some mad, twisted mirror of yourself and a reflection of your own past actions.

I actually am not sure I quite agree with your interpretation of *why* the ending few missions are rushed. Actually, I think it makes a very correct analogy to the power vacuums that are left behind after an act of aggression like the Iraq War. A World With No Boundaries appears to fill the ideological and political gap left by the sudden collapse of Belka and the dissatisfaction it bred. What happened in the real world? ISIS, an ideologically motivated, totally insane faction with an urge to burn it all down and replace it with something radically different, and it attracted high-level figures from the old regime the US destroyed. Really, it's downright prescient.
No, the end is rushed entirely because they just didn't fill out how we got there, to be honest.

Hey! Posadas is a Latin American writer and theorist. He was a part of the Fourth International, the international association of communist parties that supported Trotsky's side in his spat with Stalin and the USSR. The Posadists, as they came to be known, split off from the Fourth International under Posadas hhimself in the 60s/70s. The Posadists were isolated and insular and they sort of... went weird? Posadas was a weird guy interested in UFOs and his interest filtered down to further Posadists (any aliens would probably be communists, as they would need to be to be that advanced, so we should be signalling them for help in our revolutionary struggle!) and the group also contemplated whether an early pre-emptive nuclear strike on the Capitalist west could be "won" and might in fact be the needed push to end the hold of Capital. Other leftists and communists thought they were batshit nuts and after Posadas died in the 80s they became more obscure. Recently, in the last decade, the Posadists have become a meme in a lot of leftist/progressive internet spaces as well as more esoteric spaces because the idea of a bunch of communist academics talking about nuking the world and aliens saving us from capitalism sounds extremely cartoonish and funny.

um ackshually, meme's DID actually exist before the 90's, in fact, the definition existed since 1967 but functionally existed literally since the first two people communicated. meme's are "an element of a culture or system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means." what you count as "memes" are just a small subset of actual memes. modern meme's are just a way of communicating in a humorous way for the internet culture.

4:35 No, no, they do have escorts. They are utterly trash because its the first mission and you wipe the whole formation in 3 minutes. The in-game justification would be overconfidence by high command.
5:20 No, they aren't refugee camps, its military BUT they have no anti-air defences. What he is refering to is the presence of civilian buildings being used as supply dumps by the belkan army.
8:30 The player and wingman are bait in this mission. The objetive was to have the belkans busy while the osean navy moved into striking distance of the in-game equivalent of the Kiel canal.
15:00 Then again, not civilian. Army HQs with no anti-air defences.
17:00 Yes. Its just an insert of the fabricated WMDs war justification. Except the end justified the means because the belkans did have nukes and quite a lot of 'em.
20:50 In game they are not troop transporting, they are supplying. No marines.
27:40 Right on. The Belkan Air Force being overworked and undermaintained is one of the central dialogue topics in the missions.
32:45 Only the first wave of fighters are desperate home-based squadrons trying to stop the allied forces. The second wave is formed by stealth bombers and fighters with the objetive of destroying experimental weapons facilities in the city, so they don't fall in the hands of the allies.
38:20 Posadism advocates nuclear warfare as a viable means to the end of capitalism. Also bringing communism to the aliens. Look it up, its a fascinating rabbit hole. In-game, the end-game villains are posadists.
40:00 It does. They drop nukes on the 7 major roads/pathways into Belka through the Waldreich Mountains. It stopped the allies dead in its tracks.
46:30 The whole game is a mash-up of WW2 and Operation Desert Storm / Iraq. You have WMD-AA Laser-Giant Bomber-making germans against jingoist americans and an ambiguous Russia who is only mentioned in game by narrations of secret operatives and disserting pilots.

47:12 that was actually a mistake on Max0r's part. I'm not sure if they explicitly say what kind of bomb V2 is in Ace Combat Zero specifically, but in Ace Combat 5 (the game that Zero is a direct prequel to) V2 makes a return, and in that game it's correctly identified as a MERV by the briefing officer.
55:00 1) no, the montage was added by Max0r
    2) the stuff that Max0r labeled as real in-game dialogue is real, anything he didn't label as such was made up by him. Though the actual dialogue is pretty comparable. For example, when he launches V2, Pixy says "too bad, buddy. This twisted game needs to be reset." Or after AWACS tells you that you need to shoot Pixy down from the front, he ends off with "demon lord of the round table, I pray for your success"

You gave the example of the Great Depression, but did not cite the consequences of this keynesianistic approach. The economy feels when useless jobs are created, inflation gets higher to compensate, the result is an economic bubble which just delays and aggravates the same issue, but for the later generations.
Breaking a window to give the glassmaker a job does not make the economy grow.
