The dislike was from Nintendo.
Or someone horrified that he didn't use flux
Seeing this is perfect because in the future all the original chargers and charge ports will be dead and need a more modern replacement
This is great. I’ve recently wanted to try installing usb-C into a majority of my handhelds for a variety of reasons. Reason one is one you mentioned and that’s just versatility. I have a GBA SP. A DS Lite. GBA Macro mod. Old 3DS. And an original GBA with a battery mod that has usb-c. When I bought the 3DS it came with a nice wire that has a usb connection that leads to 3 charging ports. 3DS. DS Lite. GBA SP. super useful and I love it because it simplifies things. I’d originally been interested in wireless charging but it gets pretty hot and I find i use it less than expected. But I recently bought a magnetic charging cable set. Basically it comes with plugs that connect to IPhone. Micro usb. Or usb-C and the wire just has a magnet that connects onto each of these ports. Well my Unhinged SP mod happens to have USB-C so I popped one into it and it was awesome. My vita slim has micro usb. Slotted one onto it. Also awesome. My original GBA with a usb-c battery pack also got one. The work fantastic and it actually got me thinking about making it possible to use it for all my devices. I even ended up using one on my wireless Sony PlayStation headset and made a charging dock for it using some parts I had. So I wanted to added usb-c to my other devices to utilize the tech as well. Thanks for such an informative video
Love it ! excelent job explaining what you were doing. Hope you upload more mod videos soon
Btw really cool video I'm glad someone out there knows how to do this to show others. I only wish the camera angle and lightning was better it's hard to see what you're doing although you're very descriptive so I understand what you're doing.
You have the exact same soldering mat as me. Same color and everything. Gonna like the video for that and the info.
Very nice, easy to follow mod :) would love some documentation/pdf with pictures as that makes a great complimentary info
lol sounds like a great mod considering ds lite chargers short out over time quick if not kept in good condition, can be hassle trying to get one 3rd party like ebay. Not to mention its now 100% more convenient now, even if not professional love the enthusiasm in vid
I would be nice if the USBC mod had some sort of power filter and regulator on it so you could charge it with any cable and it would be just fine and it would protect the problem with the F1 f2 fuse with the original port I've had a charger that would just instantly blow the fuse after 2 minutes of charging and I didn't know it was the charger until 2 fuse replacements And if this UBC mod could do all that that would solve a lot of people's problems and everybody would highly recommend the USPC mod way more
The one dislike was probably from the person who tried it with glue instead of solder and fried their ds
That is all well and good, but i find the Mini USB mod* to be easier.
Mod: You need a mini USB cable. Not micro USB.
Step 1: Plug mini USB into DS lite. it will be a tight fit the first time but will loosen up with use. This is just the metal of the charging port stretching to accommodate the Mini USB. It doesn't deform very much, and you can still use a normal DS lite charger. What I did was sand the mini USB down a little to improve the fit.
Step 2: And you are done! The pins for the DS Lite charger and The power pins on Mini USB happen to line up, and the DS will not draw more voltage than it needs.
This is an easy mod, and works in a pinch. The first time I did it was wit a broken DS lite and it worked. Eventually I scraped it for parts, but have used the same method on my other DS lite. I don't use the diy charger much anymore, because I bought a USB charger specifically for the DSL. Use the DIY charger as a last resort as it is a bit sketchy. Also, do this outside, I have never had any problems, but i does not hurt to be safe. Last thing you want is to burn your house down over ≈$10 charger.
Personally I will probably just follow this tutorial and convert mine to USB C.
the plastic around the wire is Insulation
Do you need to bring a different lower voltage power brick for this mod? What voltage does this draw?
Could you please provide a link to a soldering diagram?
Could this be done with the New 3DS XL? Lost my charger cable, and made a make shift charger with GPIO pins from a my Raspberry Pi, and a micro usb cable.
omg best video EVER!!!!!
I am currently working on modding my DSi XL to accept microUSB for charging, similar to this video. To test it, I am connecting the +5 and Ground wires from a USB to the board, but the ds is not charging. Theoretically, if the correct wires from a USB were installed in the correct spots on the board, it would charge, right? Is there another element I may be overlooking?
Retro Gaming16 as long as it’s how you described I don’t see an issue unless your not providing the correct voltage? There could be a chance while testing you might have blown the charging fuse?
@@zarcha Thanks for the reply, it seems that the fuse was indeed blown! Not sure how it happened as I've only ever put around 5V through the system, but it seems that it is the problem.
@@RetroGaming16 I know it’s been ages but I’m curious. Was it clearly charging before you started modifying it? I think sometimes it’s possible from surges. That’s why they say to have your computers and stuff hooked up to surge protectors. I’d imagine a similar thing could’ve happened without you noticing, and if it was plugged into the wall at that time could’ve just blown that fuse.
What size cable are these? I tried with ds mic/antenna size ones and the shell wouldnt close
What gauge wire are you using here?
Question. If what I am reading is right, the official Nintendo DS Lite charger has a chip in it. What is this chip, what does it do, and without it can the USB C cable damage the battery ?
No, the charger does not have any "chip" in it, as in chip which would communicate to the device that it is a legitimate charger. It is just a "dumb" power supply. The USB-C charging will not damage the battery, but you need to do the mod to USB Power Delivery spec (USB-PD). The way it is done in this video is not correct, as it will work only with regular USB-A chargers and not with USB-PD USB-C chargers. For it to work with USB-C chargers, you need to add two 5.1k resistors, one from each CC pin to ground. Yes, it might work without them, but that is just asking for trouble.
I really like the mod !
Can you charge the console with any wall charger or are you obligated to use 1Amp to not damage the console ?
Any charger will do as the amount of amps drawn is dependent on the power consumption of the device you charge has
So say my phone is 5 watts
It will draw 1 amp according to
(P=U*I) 5=5*1
And if I have a 10 watt device
10=5*2
My question is, would it be possible to do the same mod on the original fat ds?
where did you get the parts from ?
Hi, can this be done for a DSi XL? Thanks!
Do you recommend using a phone charger or something like a nintendo switch charger? I dont want to overcharge the ds lite.
The charging will be cut off from the DS itself when its full and is not dependent on the power supply used. It needs to be a power supply that will provide 5v regardless of the port asking for 5v via capacitors or a PD chip. Unlike in this video 5v SHOULD be requested via resistors on the CC1 and CC2 pins or via a PD chip, doing it that way will work with most if not all smart charges while this way works more like the old way before usb-c standards.
Oh man i miss my pink ds
Hey bro good mod btw can you do bluetooth mod for nds lite ?
Is it just me or does it any you that he doesnt put the bit into the screwdriver when taking out/putting in the battery cover
where did you get those buttons for that ds lite at 3:04
I think you can get them on ebay. They are from a Ice Blue DS light
do you know the cable thickness?
Could you do a video for a TRRS mod for the headset port?
Does it also work for a dsi?
I hope this is the same/similar for the dsi xl lol
Do u still do the .hack project
Can this be used to load roms or just charging?
Just for charging.
Wait u put iphone speakers in a ds lite? I need to see how to do that
yep, i just put a video up on the basics of how i do it.
What would happen if someone connects this to a super fast charger?
will it regulate it self?
if its a normal USB-A fast charger then thats like 9v or 5v 3a which can be bad
Hey man i followed all your steps and at first it worked, when i plugged a USB C charger the orange led would appear. But now it doesnt.. i checked with a voltage tester the V-IN pad and it gets the 5v from the charger, the V-GRND also checks out fine. So i dunno what else to do.. maybe it is charging but the leds dont work?
You might have blown a fuse
@@zarcha i just checked and F1 is blown :/
Blehstor it happens so easily when they get old.
@@zarcha i bridged the fuse but its still not charging!! :(
@@zarcha i bridged both F1 and F2 and still not charging.. im about to throw this thing away
Could i use a usb-c to hdmi? I want to be able to play games on my tv..
I'm afraid not, the USB-C here is only linked to 2 power cables. This would be battery + and ground. You would need data cables for this.
However, Hackaday and the Lost Nintendo History have you covered, if you are happy to settle with Composite instead of HDMI.
What size wire is that?
I would like to know too !
Do you take commissions? I have a Nintendo ds xl and I just want to convert the charging port and my own tools and skills are not even close to yours.
I’d just learn how to do it yourself. Soldering is very easy to do and I had success my first time with zero prior experience
What pin did you end up attaching the red wire to?
i did it to the 2nd pin from the left. it can also be the second pin from the right. both end pins are gnd.
Sir can you fix mine
Cuales son esos speakers?
PD: im sorry, i dont talk english very good... :C
For the macro speakers? im not super sure on what i used in that one for sure but it was probably iphone 6s plus. i also tried iphone 5s, 6, 7, and 8 speakers. all worked well but some worked out in design better.
@@zarcha Its possible install any speaker on a Nintendo DS Lite?
@@VitadriGameplaysandmore For any of the DS family a normal 2 wire speaker can be installed. For the speakers like this though it would only work in a Macro (modded ds lite with no top screen) with its ds slot removed for room
.
Can u usb c mod mine and how much please
Or you could just buy $3 mini USB 2.0 on Amazon. 😂
Gotta say, thats a long video
Soldering without skill... Too long video, one mistake after another!
I can not get the old charging port off of my mother board to save my life 🥲
