I Bought a $7 Nintendo DS Flash Cartridge

- The Nintendo DS was a hugely successful console. It sold over a hundred million units, and its games sold even more. However, there was a deep dark secret looming around: the R4 - Revolution for DS. This flash cart allowed the user to put game ROMs on a MicroSD card and play them right on their Nintendo DS. I always wanted one as a kid, but my parents never let me get my hands on one. I wonder why...
Now that I'm much older and I know how to back up my games legally and responsibly, I decided to look for one of these "R4" cartridges. I went to eBay and found the R4 Gold Pro on sale for $6.99 with free shipping. Let's give it a shot! Surely nothing could go wrong... what's a time bomb?

UPDATE (again): Among the vast list of other things ruined by the onslaught of the pandemic, it looks like the R4i Gold 3DS Plus is no longer being manufactured. The company's website appears to be down and I can't find any listings for it anymore, so I have no choice but to instead recommend the card I featured in this video with RGF's YSMenu installed.
Rip luckily i got one.
For firmware id recommend twiilight menu (idk just like the ui better)
The websites for these cartridges are always being shifted around for legal reason.
How can I record my DS Lite screen to live stream like you?
I like your newest theme on the gba temp fourms
Lies, the site is running perfectly at least now. My R4 time bomb hit (i had 2015 card), updated firmware and it was working perfectly again.

I've got an original one with a gold sticker on it. It doesn't work anymore as my DSi was too advance. But almost 2 weeks ago I modded my ds so there is basically a built-in R4 Card. I use Twilight Menu++ and luckily it's more advance than the ds. Now I can play games I used to play on the R4 even GBA, GG, NES, SNES and even Sega Master System. There's more to add too. You can also mess around with custom firmwares to remove them as well
I was thinking a possible solution would be to wait for the time bomb to blow and then redownload the necessary files to get it working again. That company has to update their site/downloads to keep their future cards working. Obviously you're just waiting for the problem to come up again but I assume that would be the easiest way if you wanted to keep the date accurate.
@@SB-SB You don't even have to redownload anything. I "activated" my time bomb to see what happened, got the error message, rebooted and set the date back really far, and it booted perfectly fine. The R4 kernel just needs to be updated, happened when it became 2020, i changed my time and it still works, but also firmware on the website makes it work. They aren't fabricating new versions of these, just putting new stickers on them, so they will always have the updates as long as they are a company, which is still questionable
maaan, this video hit me hard with nostalgia. When I got my first ds, my mom couldn't afford the games so she just gave me the R4 card and it came with a bunch of weird, third party games, but I loved them so much. And obviously the classics too, mario party, mario kart and all that.
One day the thing just stopped working, and now I know why lol.
Probably because some of them have timebombs, where after a certain time they stop working. U can remove the timebomb by setting the clock back tho iirc!

When I bought my first R4 flashcart I actually got it on Amazon, this was before the landmark court order than made them illegal to sell. You could buy it in pretty much every independent game store too until the law change, which also killed their business in chipping consoles. It was pretty crazy thinking back just how mainstream pirating had become at that time, I remember so many people with pirated PS2s, DS's and PSP's. As a broke kid though it saved me from playing the same games over and over and having a world of variety to choose from, like living in a game shop/blockbuster for real.
Back then people made real Business with piracy too. The target audience for these flashcarts were kids who had no idea of how to set them up. So stores would charge them a small fee for every game they wanted preloaded on their R4s. It was a malicious win/win. The kids only paid 2$ instead of 20-40$ per game while sellers basically made big money selling stuff that they downloaded online for free
When my firmware expired all i needed to was mess with the clock and it worked again
@@epicgrapefruit7563 I've never had that problem
@@theteeve no it's because some games act on a calendar system that counts in real-time, and if you adjust the dates it may not progress because it skips time where things should occur. Think of Tomodachi Life for the 3DS (or Animal Crossing but I don't think it messes the progression up)
I had an R4 as a stupid kid who updated his system to go the eshop before I found out it already closed and I didn't have a usb that had the micro sd card slot at the back so I couldn't play it
theres a specific r4.dat file that lets you avoid the timebomb on the cartridge
You can always put YSMENU on it and it will no longer have the timebomb
I was never familiar with this tech due to me never really having a DS until way later after it’s lifecycle. This was a super interesting video and I really enjoyed it.
I have the same one. Aside from a timebomb (flashcard disables after a certain amount of time) that can be easily bypassed with YSMenu, I love it.

Is anyone going to talk about how the time bomb is literally just to make you update the kernel on the card? It's to account for firmware updates and such, it doesn't kill the card and you didn't need to buy a new card. I have an R4i for my DS Lite I've used since like 2010 and as soon as the bomb triggered I Googled the issue and low and behold you just had to download the new kernal, but at the time I think I ended up messing with the date just because I was at my grandma's without a computer.
All they want is having control over your card. Forcing you to update the kernel when there's no genuine reason to do so is still a shitty thing that shouldn't be there. It should be your choice to make, not theirs.
@@Confruggy True, it's not at all a good thing but with such an easy fix, no matter which one you use, it's kind of a non-issue at this point.

Hey everybody! Quick story that you might find interesting: when I was 4 I got a ds that came with an r4 card, it isn’t the gold. It is a solid black colour with no website to been seen. As a kid, it time-bombed on me (probably why the dude my parents bought it from was selling it) but maybe since it wasn’t the gold or the ds was already garbage, the card crashed and froze before it could completely Timebomb. I still have the original ds and r4 and am currently 15, 11 years later and it still boots up half the time.
TLDR: my timebomb glitched because my ds is shit
Clarification: the card runs completely fine, but if you try to cheat on any of the games or delete save files it totally crashes. It also isn’t the one for 3ds. Either I’m dumb (likely) or the card has been diffused (possible but not likely)
Yo man

I need help. I found my r4 ds lite and a r4 3ds wifi cartridge. What's the best r4 card for my DS lite? Is the best one tey gold one or the SDHC white dual core one?
$7 for that level of quality of a flash cartridge?! Now I feel guilty that I made my parents hand over $35 for a standard R4 Gold 2 with 100 games at the San Fernando Swapmeet which is basically a Mexican flea market when I was 8. Still, the cartridge contains some of the best childhood memories I have, New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 DS, both Mario and Luigi games made for DS, Pokémon HeartGold, Yoshi Touch and Go, Sonic Colors, Kirby Superstar Ultra, so much MORE that I loved. I was stoked as hell playing it on my DSi XL, and even more stoked when I had my friend homebrew my 3DS XL and it was now playable on there after I thought it would never boot up on my 3DS after many disappointing failed attempts before CFW was installed. I played the hell out of that cartridge for 5 years, but sadly the SD Card got stuck inside a random little hole in my PC and I was never able to get it out. I still have that cartridge, I keep it to remind me of better times inside my New 3DS XL case. I had CFW on the 3DS, and I had a bunch of my games on there through CFW, about 7. I later on found Twilight Menu++ and I reinstalled new ROMS of my childhood favorites, and I go back and play those sometimes more than my 3DS Games. Luigi’s Mansion? Yeah that’s great but it doesn’t have Baby Mario being guided by little clouds in the dawn sky. Smash 3DS is excellent but who the fuck cares because it doesn’t have Meta Knight’s Revenge. Yo-Kai Watch 2 is incredible, but I kinda have to leave it early since Typhlosion and Red Gyrados give me death glares when I play inferior RPGs.

@@whyareyoulookingatmydiscor9265 The name "timebomb" is quite dramatic for what it does. This is a really good video, got a bit nostalgia,
I remember having something similar to that, when I was a child (and still to this day) legitimate games were crazy expensive, mostly because our currency is ass, and I only have that catridge, Whenever we want a new game, we got to write a list of games to a piece of paper, Go to the shady ass game store, and give the list to the one of the employees, That employee would then load the pirated games we wanted (we don't know it's pirated at the time, thought it was the real deal). Usually 1 pirated game is less than a dollar (maybe a couple of cents or even lower). So we usually got back home with like 30 different games. I never see a DSi here, So I only have a DS lite. It's actually ain't half bad. But mine loads faster, and the it can run almost every game (except for Black and White 2), the only problem is that it some games (like Rune factory 2) sometimes lags, making some of the bosses to be easier
You know you can just add new games by yourself...right?
@@gioiadelsapere yeah, But at the time. I don't really know that. When I was a kid I imagine that they insert it to some giant computer machine so it can upload the games files to the cartridge.

@@olal9904 Nope, its my official cartridge Ive been using for literally everything in gen 5 since release. Including Dream World and Bank transfers. It just behaves oddly once every few years lol. Bought at an EB Games (Canadian Gamestop) back in 2012.
Salted Neos what flashcart did you buy?
@@bunkedbed13 an official card. Not a flashcart.
It’s late in my area and I didn’t even read this dudes comment lol
I experienced the time bomb on an R4 DS Lite 2018, all I did was update the firmware on website and it worked again.
I just changed the DS date to 2014
@@diogenes26 This will ruin games that utilize the DS clock, a great example is Animal Crossing Wild World.
@@BLACHAx970
Animal Crossing WW doesn't suffer at all when you travel back in time.
The only problem is that its Monday, Tuesday, etc won't coincide with the day in real life (unless you pay attention to the year and make sure it coincides).
Now, when you travel back into the future... that's another story.
There'd be weeds everywhere, a villager will be gone and (I read, but never experienced this myself) Tom Nook's shop could downgrade.
There are firmwares that remove the time bomb.
So, I bought an original DS and a game on ebay. they both work fine, but the game is an "unlicensed recreation" of Pokemon White. The menu says Ace3ds+...am I good, or do I need to update the kernel?
I have the original R4i from waaay back, I was too young to fully make use of it but always wanted to keep my library of lost cartridges and play stuff never released overseas.
Am I safe to just boot it back in whatever console or would me not having touched it and using it on my 3DS bring me any troubles?
never had one. the DS Lite was my first console, when i got it back in 2006. ironically, i only was 2 years old at the time. still have the original navy blue DS i used to play on in 2007 - 2009.
@Hatori Ibuki No dip.
... Playing DS at 2... before you were potty trained or in school. sure bud.
@the weirdest person you would ever meet They're a liar
never said i played it, i just got in 2006 :^|
@@HauntedMound666 It's not crazy to believe at all. We have babies with iPads today why is this so incomprehensible for you.
Dude my friend had one of these and I was always jealous becaus he had like 50 games and I had like 15!
Thanks. I've got the same cart as you did and the time bomb heads up is probably gonna be a savior.
Can you use the plus to back up GBA games when using a NDS?
the only game that ever came out on the DS is Club Penguin Elite Penguin Force
no other DS game exists. Not even Nintendo released anything for it, sm my h.
Omg someone actually had that game too
I thought that I'm the only one
Wat?
Sanio oh my god i LOVE that game, beat it for the first time the other day
Oh my GOD someone else has that game!? Epic.
This was the first thing my dad bought me for my ds lol
Does anyone know where we can still buy the R4i Gold 3DS Plus??
Finally!!! A great video about this topic! I am searching info for a long time about a "2013 R4 Gold" I own. It doesn't work anymore on all 3dsxl systems i own. Unfortunately my kids turned the wifi on at one point, and Nintendo installs updates. i was told these updates make the Card unable. But now you are telling about the Time Bomb, i am blown away! i got v11 to v13 on the DS systems. i tought the R4 would still work on the v8 DS software. i almost tried downgrading the DS with the help of some shady UA-cam movies. i probably would have bricked it. I am so Lucky i didnt proceed with that. Thanks! I hope someone will find a way some day, to get these cards up running again. Modern Vintage Gamer also has a great video about jailbreaking the DS! Cheers
jeez, i homebrewed my 3ds to find out you can do jack on it lol
Are you using custom firmware or the Homebrew launcher?
Huh? You can do a TON with a homebrewed 3DS. It’s legit up there with the PSP at times
You can do a lot did you just fuck it up? You can play DS games from roms now and emulate many systems. Ohh and dump your games and install other dumps.
@@santumChannelYes the psp was the best homebrew'd console ever
I didnt pay for a single psp game but i played like the whole library
Cfw is a god send man. I love using it for projecting my 3ds screen to my PC
when i was 9 years old,I had my first ds with a R4 (i'm lucky)
Same
Holy shit. I'm 19 this year and got my DS nearly at the same time as you. It was a pink DS Lite. I also got an email from a website where I bought a NS Xecuter injector a couple years back now, and they offered me a free R4 card if I bought their fake NS controller from their brand new amazon page, made a 5 star review and they would refund the sum. I only remembered that this r4 card was my childhood dream when I actually got it, since I couldn't get a new game all the time as a kid. Recently used it to homebrew my 3DS recently as well.
Is the original R4 worth it? I game store near me has one for sale for $20
I don't understand why so many people are taking the "I did nothing wrong" line so seriously. That isn't what the video is about.
very true. People are assholes and like to nitpick everything.
My only question is, how do you dump game files from an official cartridge? xD
You can use a 3ds homebrew application to do so
@@mint_kyuu99 ye i figured that out after some more binge watchin lol
The original DS also had a GBA slot. There were GBA-cartridges with flash memory (e.g. EZ-Flash V). So you could boot a dumper via the DS-cartridge, then swap it for the game cart, dump it to the GBA memory, then swap back and copy it from the GBA flash to the MicroSD. That's how it worked with my CycloDS Evolution card a decade ago.
@@mbirth and ds lite
Hello, thanks for you video
I got the same card and follow the instruction but i cannot load any game and i have an error message "R4 error load rom errcode=-1 "
I know you are not a tutorial video, but you seem to manage to make the roms work, any advices on how i can fix my issues please ? :)
is there cartridge for 3ds ? i mean, most of them are compatible with 3ds but only play ds games, what i want to know is if there one for playing 3ds games even if the 3d doesn't work i intend to buy a 2ds xl anyway
Sky3ds, stargate or Gateway... or hack your 3ds. It's free
The time bomb its not permanent, just go to the website and keep downloading the newer kernels. I have the 2014 R4 i just keep updating the files. Still using it on my dsi as of yesterday with current date
Or keep your NDS Date low if the Flash Cart is dead. It's not such a deal breaker IMO.
Aliek Airaf can you send me a link? I have a 2014 as well and never found something for it
Aliek Airaf SDHC
Downloading roms isn't that bad dude
So...do you guys have any recommendation for nds/3ds emulators for phones
great to know YSMenu will fix the issue, I was really worried about saving issues.
there is another downside for flash cart, for pokemon games, you can't trade locally to another legit game because this use infrared from the legit card it self.
also you can't use the poke transporter on it.
You can actually i just did it the other day. That is what I thought at first too.
EDIT: Still need legit cart for transferring pokemon from gen 3 to gen 4, gen 4 to gen 5, and to pokemon bank from gen 5. SO that will still cost you about $50-$60 to get pokemon diamond and pearl (stay away from soulsliver and heartgold and platinum they go for way too much) at $35-$40 and any of the gen 5 games go for cheaper than that because of the fact gen 5 was underrated. You might not want to get gen 3 games the authentic ones shot up in price in the last couple of years around $50+ now which is stupid for a pokemon game. Just buy a flash cart and edit the pokemon yourself. Run the original gen 3 games on the flash cart in fact.
“I don’t condone downloading commercial games.”

This bring me memories back, this flash cards where very popular here in Panama, you could buy one in almos every electronic/technology store, almost everyone I know who owns any Ds/3ds model has one
With the R4i+ 3DS/DS, do you know if you're able to trade Pokemon on Pokemon Black on the R4 with another Pokemon game on physical cartridge?
You can
