DS Lite USB C Charge Mod

- The USB C mod was provided to me by rorosaurus on discord (and github and tindie) for testing. He's sent me a few mods so far and they've all been fantastic. I wanted to get this one checked out and make a video on it but I also had a new shell I wanted to install a DS Lite in so I figured I'd get two birds stoned. This is the edited down version of the video for just the USB C mod for those interested. The full version is here: • DS Lite Reshell and US...
rorosaurus will be selling these boards preassembled (I believe) on his tindie store when he gets the design finalized and gets the stock, otherwise, the source is listed on his github if you want to DIY.

github: github.com/rorosaurus/nds-lit...
I did NOT file down the shell for this as it's not 100% necessary but it would result in a much cleaner appearance if I did.

Big fan x
Double big fan :)
Oleeee Elliot! You should try to replicate his backlit pokewalker video! I enjoy both your and his videos cool to see you comment on his. 👍🏻 take care.

DSL is handsdown one of the most underrated handhelds!
didn’t it sell the most units in nintendo’s history of handheld consoles? or do you mean underrated in current times?
@@thiefrules in current times!
@@JuicyJakeRepairs everyone had one so no one remembers it 🤣
I'm guessing we'll see a revival in the next few years, so pick up some old units for cheap while you still can 🌚
@@thiefrules the revival time is almost upon us, the retro crowd has caught up to gamecube
the hinges sucked though
I saw how fast he was shoving that antenna wire under the cart slot and said "if he gets it first try I'm going to steal his cat."
There's a magical spot *almost* at the top of the cart slot where the antenna goes through perfectly fine. Make sure the connector is face DOWN not face UP or you will have a bad day.
gotta say for some reason I love these usb c conversion mods you do on these gameboys and now the DS, as always I do enjoy watching you videos buddy :)
I bought this particular solder sucker thanks to your recommendation. it works great. thanks a lot
Aaaayyy cat boi made an appearance at the end. That was funny. He looked like one of those loading circles spinning around trying to get comfy on the bag instead of the nice big bed lmao. My cat also refuses to sleep in the bed I got her. She prefers like right next to my face in my bed.
No joke, My friend is about to do this to my DS lite. I'll show him this video
Damn, I was looking for something like this 2 months ago and designed one myself since I couldn’t find anything. Mine uses a flex PCB and mounds directly to the same posts from the OEM port, but this is cool too
41:03 That deformation is probably caused by the Wifi antenna cable being trapped between the bottom shell and the PCB, since the USB-c mod eliminates or narrows down the space where that cable would normally be routed ;y
Yooo that’s awesome, you basically could give it wireless charging as well cool might try this one day and fix an old ds lite
Love the blue led look
also dumb question but have you considered using a lint roller to clean up bits of solder and plastic and whatnot on your desk after a project? might also help w cat hair
I just use a small bit of tape and it works fine for me.
you can do this whit a new 2ds?
Does anyone know of a versions of this mod for the DSi?
I really don't want to need to design the board myself if it's already been done by somebody...
3DS version might fit. MIGHT.
Anyone know a good Shell tu buy?I has bad experiences some time ago
The newer extremerate shells look decent but I have yet to try one personally.
How did you changed the green light to blue when you power your ds on??
replace the LED. Watch the longer version of this video if you want to see that. ua-cam.com/video/ovJ1VmeiF-Q/v-deo.html
I just did this to the same one but all I had on hand was micro usb, worked fine as if it was ment to be made that way. I'll have to get some type c connector and redo it
Just a few days a go I did the most bumhole hackjob usb-c mod to a DS Lite, shoulda just waited for this.
Its fun to tinker though.
But does it work tho
@@hakimdurand8427 it does indeed!
Does this mod have any effect on how quickly the NDS Lite battery will charge?
none whatsoever
Will this mod ever be made available on his website? I check periodically and it’s always out of stock. I have the usb-c port, just not the pcb that goes with it. I’m not sure how to diy it without the pcb.
I'm fairly confident rorosaurus posted the gerbers on his github so you can just have more boards made from a place like oshpark.
@makho is there any way you or anyone in the community can develop a push button option for the DS lite's power switch? Those tiny levers are super fragile. Or even a workaround where if you press start and select at the same time it'll trigger the power. Just spit balling but I hope it's possible.. thanks for your work man
you know the current switch can be replaced with any momentary SPST switch, right?
@@makho I haven't seen that mod anywhere I had no idea
I have done the SP version of this and works great, I'm assuming the resistor values for this one are the same??
well since the resistors are for the type C connector, yes.
If I was interested in fitting a DSL with a USB C power socket, where would be the best place to source a conversion board, like the one provided by Rorosaurus?
you can buy one from rorosaurus or check the linked github repo and make it yourself
@@makho What PCB thickness? Roro recommended .8mm for the GBA one, but doesn't have one for the DSLite.
@@shanez1215 probably the same, ask roro
it seems like the case needs to be trimmed slightly to fit everything flush according to rorosaurus's install guide. since his shop is sold out and he does not seem to be restocking I am having some made by OSH park that are half height PCBS and that should fix the issue.
I'd also be interested, if you have any left over.
@@spengineer2064 Hi sorry I ended up using all of the ones over a couple of mods for some friends however the assembly process isn't terribly difficult I'm only a mid-level solderer and I was able to put them together If you look at his tindy page you can get the schematic and all of the required part numbers to orders
@@lynnwalkerkelly still outta stock… I messaged them on Amazon like last year (literally) and they don’t know when there will be more stock.. so I just bought some pcbs and will be building them myself
I have the old Nintendo 3DS that won't switch on, whenever I try to switch it on both screen flicker and then it switches off, I'm not sure what the problems is, please help.
It could be any number of things. You have more detail than I do. What changed? Did you take it apart? Did you try to eliminate variables such as battery or SD card?
Try a console repair discord or subreddit or something.
@@makho To be honest im not sure what the problem is, it work fined and after a while the hinges became loose and that's when the screen flickering started but thank you I will do as advised.
@@Princemoyo137 sounds like your top screen is bad then and based off your description, that's where I'd start. New screens are inexpensive but disassembly and replacement is not an easy task.
Would you be able to make a lipo mod for this system
github.com/makhowastaken/ags_lipo
Just found this video, I always think about modding the charge port on my 2ds xl to type c but lack the confidence to do it without a proper guide or mod kit
Henrique, if that even is your real name, this video is for a DS Lite, not a 2DS XL. I have a video for a 3DS but that console uses a port with a different footprint so that might not work for your console.
I AM EXCITED
Is there a particular thickness the PCB should be? I'm assuming it's either 0.8mm or the usual 1.6 but rorosaurus doesn't go over this in the github repo.
I believe 0.8mm
@@makho thought so, thankyou!
Awesome! Do you know if there's something like this for the original DS?
github.com/rorosaurus/gba-sp-usb-c
What size resistor are you using
probably 0603, check the github linked in the description
Woah this is awesome. Still waiting on a mod to add the GBA link port though
Where did you get those awesome ds buttons?
custom just for me =)
would the same part work for a DSi I wonder?
different charge port so probably not
Great video indeed.
Just ordered some PCBs from JLCPCB (which offers free PCB prototype twice a month here) and the components from LCSC, gonna try it myself.
Just not sure if I'm gonna handle those 0402 resistors xD
Update: got the mod installed on my white DS Lite. Unfortunately I have to cut the shell a little bit, and the Type-C port stick out to the shell as well thanks to my poor skills. The worst part was that my DS Lite shuts down immediately on power on. Just a blink on the green light and it's done.
I thought I must had blown up something but eventually found that both two fuses are fine. My friend which is a Electronic Engineer who helped my a lot to diagnose the issue, and he found that all the voltages were fine, and after removing the Wi-Fi module the console did turn on but won't go into the system. So I ordered 3 Wi-Fi modules from a second seller who guaranteed these to work (which is pretty cheap BTW, even cheaper than shipping fees here xD), put them on, and nothing happened. Still won't turn on.
At this time, I thought probably I've fried the PCB and was already seeking for second hand motherboards. But thankfully, it's just the flex cables not inserted properly way in xD
@@kevin_mx What a thriller movie script.
@@ericandersonmartinsmiranda9445 Yup. My friend and I spent quite some time debugging it and we got lucky there's no real hardware damage.
cool video bro
is the proceedure the same for dsi?
Different port so no
Thank you
What happened to the full version?
?
Literally just yesterday I was wondering "huh I wonder if I can add USB C to my ds lite without blowing anything up"
i'll be on the same quest haha. glad i googled it
cat reveal pog
Anyone know another solution for this? I have a DS I want to do this to but looks like amazon and the site are out of stock.
The source is listed in the github. You can order more boards from that.
@@makho So take the Gerber files to a PCB supplier and have them custom build? Do you have a supplier you would recommend? Sorry I am not an electrical engineer so going outside what I know. Thanks!
@@MonkeyKing715 Yes, upload the gerber files to a place like oshpark and they will make and send you the PCBs. I don't know off hand if these boards are supposed to be 0.8mm thick but if so, make sure to check that option once added to your shopping cart because the default (1.6mm) would be too thick.
@@makho Awesome! Thanks for the info. I am using this as an excuse to get a better soldering iron, currently using a wood burning kit one which is okay for wire but I don't think would cut it for this. Any recommendations on what to look for doing something like this?
@@MonkeyKing715 something with temp control probably
Hello, where can i buy it, it’s ouf of stock ?
If someone has an usb c mod for ds lite at buy i’ m here
Thanks a lot
The source files should be there if you want to make it yourself.
It’s not easy for me i have not the tools and skill
No probleme thanks for your time 🙂
they look like 0402 resistors.
Could you do usb-c on psp
sure, it can be done
but I won't be doing a video on it
I am disliking the yellow translucency of your case. Utterly matte white would have been better.
Usb-c in a gameboy micro!
nah
easiest USB-C mods ever
