Dude this was the exact opposite for me! I wanted a DSi but got a psp and fell in love with that thing. Later on though I got a 3ds and even though that system was nice, I still prefer my psp. But both systems are awesome!
DS was the best handheld system - Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing Wild World, and Nintendogs were my childhood. Back in Primary School, we had a thing called toy day, which is pretty self explanatory, and we all brought in our DS's and had a class wide Mario Kart tournament - those were the days.

So... you're telling me that a launch title for the DS 14 years ago had online voice chat, but for the Switch Nintendo decided to make you use your phone?
+Diamond Axe Studios Music It makes so much more sense to incorporate your mobile phone to handle voice chat today than using the Switch itself. You have your phone with you all the time, everyone owns one and your phone has everything. It has Discord, the absolute best voice chat on the market, you can easily connect any headset to your phone too. Both wired and wireless. People try to argue that when you play on the Switch, you are actively using it but the fact remains, you still have your phone with you during that time too. The quality of voice chat on the Switch would have been worse than your phone as well. In fact, voice chat do exist on the Switch and the sound quality is terrible. A mobile phone is the most accessible piece of hardware everyone has today. It makes no sense to ignore it at this point. It works perfectly well with Switch. Ignore Nintendo's app, just use Discord and you're good to go.
@@ReachStudioPro if you think about it. Your correct. People say why not use discord. But that kinda contribute themselves. As they themselves are using an outside platform. It is not as bad as most think

I remember going on a camping trip with my buddies and three of us had DSes. we took the opportunity in our respective seats to all play our suite of games together during that 3 hours drive. Metroid Prime Hunters mutiplayer, Mario Kart DS, a bit of 64 DS. It was a blast. Something we rarely ever replicated but still sticks really firmly in my mind. It was a cool system that felt ahead of its time at the time.
I remembered feeling like a real big brain boy cause I knew DS stood for "Dual Screen" and not "Double Screen". I'm Swedish so my limited 8-year olds knowledge about English made me a fucking wizard, although keep in mind that I was also convinced Emerald (As in Pokemon Emerald) was actually pronounced "Ermelade" because I heard it from a friend, and went around and told everyone about it... maybe I wasn't that much of a linguistic scientist.
I remember Christmas Day in 2008 when my sister and I got our own respective DS lites with 2-3 games to share, and that was the sole thing that got me into gaming. While my favorite games from that era of Nintendo are the Pokemon games released and Mario Kart DS, I will never forget the hours my dad, sister and I would spend trying to beat each other's records in all of the courses in Cars Race-O-Rama
My uncle bought me my green DS Lite which I still have to this day. I only had two games for years until high school when my friend gave me his old game collection, and now I'm working on expanding my game collection. My uncle is surprised that I haven't broken it yet.
I live in Japan, and that sounds like the most Japanese slogan ever. Like so many things get lost in translation, or are misunderstood because someone decided that using Google Translate to make a name/slogan for their company was a good idea.
@@GumSkyloard Yeah, that one's pretty good. At least "Touching is good" is better than naming a secondhand hardware store "Hard-Off."(Yes, this is an actual store chain in Japan.)
I'm not so fond of it. I have owned almost 3 because they keep breaking. The stop constantly cracks and the R button fails very often. So much so that I avoid fast paced games that need it.
I swear, the best part of using the DSi in my opinion was Flipnote Studio, back when Hatena was still supported. All of those flipnotes music videos made by Fleesveon, Kiwi, EpicGuitar, Zombiewolf and others were so dear to me, that after my SD card was corrupted after Hatena was discontinued, I just felt a part of me die inside; literally 27 folders worth of flipnotes that I saved on the SD card... all gone. Although Sudomemo is a nice substitute, I really hope Flipnote Studio gets a comeback on the Switch, where everyone can share their animations again
My friend and I would always collect Flipnotes and share them whenever we got to get together! That was one of the best things about the DSI for me. So sad it never came back in full force on 3ds.
picto chat actually came in handy for me. I was going to get my tonsils out at the same time as a childhood friend of mine. After we had both gotten them out we were supposed to speak so we would send each other messages while we were stuck in the hospital. It really only had that one use for me, but I do have that good memory with it
My neighbor got an OG DS a year after launch and I was always envious. I got a black DS Lite around '06 i think? It was abused and finally broke. I got my mom to order me a refurbished one from Nintendo the SAME weekend that the Pokemon Diamond & Pearl edition DS Lite hit shelves. I was destroyed.......until Nintendo emailed and said that her credit card didnt go through. We drove my ass to Walmart and I got the Pokemon one. I still have it to this day and it always pissed me off when people thought it was just a generic sticker and tried to scrape it off..... Also sent loads of dicks through PictoChat on the bus because what else is a 7th grader to do with that much freedom?
Mine never broke until it was lost in a fire four months ago. :'( Edit: Welp this is ironic, while searching through the house we found that my Dialga/Palkia DS was safe in a cabinet.
The DS sparked my love for visual novel-style games. Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk, Ghost Trick, and Professor Layton were some of my favorites on the system outside of it also being an RPG smorgasbord.
Ah, the DS Fat. When my dad bought a lite, _I_ got to have the fat, it was one of the first consoles I owned. It worked great too! ...until my mom dropped it down the stairs and the hinges broke. But hey, it could still play GBA games! ...until my sister decided to give it a bath in the sink. Yes, I am serious.
TL;DR, the DS is so much fun I almost broke my hand trying to play a broken one. I remember the DS. my sister first won one out of one of those machines that drops 25 cent prizes even though you payed a dollar to play unless you went for the high stakes bar which was rigged AF but dropped things like cameras and phones so how could you resist. we were so fuckin hyped cause we thought we'd never get it. We must have spent something like 89$ over the course of a month at that Buffalo wild wings. my dadd took us straight ot gamestop and we got the new yoshi's island, Mario and luigi partners in time, and new super mario bros and we had an absolute blast with it. then after having it for 2 years, we lost it for like 4 months and when we found it, it had been cracked in half but i didn't care that i had to hold it at painful angles just to get the top screen to work, i played that son of a bitch like my life depended on it. It was still so much fun, even if i had to sit at impossible angles. but then my dad got me a new one because it was pissing him off to see me take 5 minutes to start a game cause i had to figure out how to balance it on my wrist just right so the picture would come through on the top screen. Still, it goes to show what a video game Addict i was that i was willing to go through all that trouble just to get some more Yoshi's island.
My favorite portable game device, the Lite version. Favorite games: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon(Explorers), Mario & Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story, Plants VS Zombies, Zelda Spirit Tracks, Crash of the Titans, Sonic Rush/Colors, and ANY Professor Layton game. So many memories!
15:50 sad that Scott didn’t dive into the Pokémon side of the DS, that was probably the DS’s biggest hit for me. Hours and hours of Pokémon in the car.
my sister went through at least 7 DS Lite's, everything you could imagine, water damaged, lost stolen snapped etc, i had a green DS Lite back in 2008.. i was like 4... (i had the green one) my hinge broke so i got a black one in around 2011. my sister got the DSi in 2009 and was lost in early 2012-2013. We now have 1st generation 3DS XL's i fucking love the DS line. but i also had a wii and now have a switch... how times have changed...

@@ajddavid452 how lol psp literally had nothing on the ds

@@ajddavid452 The DS had some cool games, and Chrono Trigger was a great way to play a game I had already beaten 20 plus times. But PSP had Persona 3 Portable, which was how I played it, after not having time to play 3 FES on the PS2. That game alone should be a system seller.

DS was the best handheld system - Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing Wild World, and Nintendogs were my childhood.

So... you're telling me that a launch title for the DS 14 years ago had online voice chat, but for the Switch Nintendo decided to make you use your phone?
Weird isn't it
+Diamond Axe Studios Music It makes so much more sense to incorporate your mobile phone to handle voice chat today than using the Switch itself.

Two words: DS Lite. Probably the best update ever to a handheld; bright backlight, slick design and GBA port. That ensured the DS’s success.
IMO The DS Lite D-pad was garbage, could just be my experience from having it worn out though
I'm not so fond of it. I have owned almost 3 because they keep breaking. The stop constantly cracks and the R button fails very often. So much so that I avoid fast paced games that need it.
And also the most beautiful handheld ever made.

AGREED!
I mean this entirely sincerely: I'm sorry for your loss.
My friend and I would always collect Flipnotes and share them whenever we got to get together! That was one of the best things about the DSI for me. So sad it never came back in full force on 3ds.

picto chat actually came in handy for me. I was going to get my tonsils out at the same time as a childhood friend of mine. It really only had that one use for me, but I do have that good memory with it
My neighbor got an OG DS a year after launch and I was always envious. I got a black DS Lite around '06 i think? It was abused and finally broke. I was destroyed.......until Nintendo emailed and said that her credit card didnt go through. We drove my ass to Walmart and I got the Pokemon one. I still have it to this day and it always pissed me off when people thought it was just a generic sticker and tried to scrape it off.....
