Just did this mod using this video and it took me like 3 hours. I have to commend your skills. You make precise micro soldering look super easy. And such a clean, organized job too.
Discovered your channel a few weeks back, been catching up on a lot of your older content and now I'm watching the new, despite knowing nothing about what your doing I still find it very relaxing and enjoyable content so please keep it coming, thank you!
I used to solder PS1 chips with my dad when I was a kid, it was a 1 hour job just to solder all these wires properly, we used shitty equipment and I was a complete noob which didn't make things easy for sure but oh man what an experience !
Entertaining and extremely helpful. Up until now my only experience with soldering was tinning and joining wires and replacing the shoulder button on my Steam Deck. But I really wanted to do this mod and your video gave me the confidence and knowledge to do it. I'm still in a bit of disbelief that I was able to solder such small components with just a magnifying glass and $50 soldering station. I had to get a hot air station for desoldering the old port, but that's alright since this project really gave me the confidence to look for other modding projects that I had shyed away from due to the soldering work. Subbed and thanks again for documenting the install of this mod so well!
Have to say, I was a bit surprised in the earlier video, when that tired old port decided to play nice and work, but clearly it was on it last legs. Very nice upgrade/mod video and, as always, some lovely tunes to go with it :)
I know what I'll be doing soon! Previously have done a Micro USB mod to my OLED Vita years ago and with everything moving to USB-C it's nice to know that Oxyll makes a mod like this. Thank you for the video Steve!
I’m surprised the data connection worked that well, because D+ and D- are a differential pair and need to match in length, but I guess USB2.0 is quite forgiving in that regard.
@@root42 Indeed. Even if you were to squeeze 10Gbit through a single differential pair, the signal itself is traveling 20 centimeters per bit, so even with a 5 centimeter mismatch the differential signals are clearly related to each other, but that’s not relevant. The whole point of differential pairs is that any interference will equally increase or decrease the voltage in both traces, meaning the voltage difference stays the same. If the traces aren’t length-matched, the differential signals will be shifted in phase, meaning the effects of the interference on each trace will arrive at the receiver at different times, so they don’t cancel each other out anymore. The higher the bandwidth, the more closely these lengths need to be matched because each bit is on the line for a shorter amount of time, so the receiver has less time to monitor the voltages and clearly discern the signal from the noise.
Well edited video. I liked the chilled music while vos was on. Also nice close ups with the microscope. Very easy watching. Wish you would do more than 1 a week.
Well I tried to replace power supply port on my Acer tablet. Made such a mess of it. Now I'm too embarrassed to take it to repair man to do it properly. Nice to see someone who knows what they are doing. (cool music too) Well done Steve.

Steve, thanks again for another awesome video and another killer reference. We got Super Market Sweep across the pond too. They just brought it back again.
@@StezStixFix ...Eeexceept for the singing I think my ears might not ever be the same....,ugh, 😭,lol . I do love your videos and was wondering if you might make some on the newer editions of the xbox1's or other phones?
Funny, it always amused me when Steve does fixes like these and says the mod is in the description. I would love to mod my 3 Vita's, but I would not even dream of attempting to as I know I would ruin them. Even when I used to do this for a living (TV and video repairs,) I would not even attempt to solder surface mount components, or components you cannot solder with the naked eye. I just stuck to through hole stuff. I would leave this sort of work to to the experts like Steve ( even though for comedy reasons he pretends not to be.) Also, I never used flux either. Had to look it up when I saw Steve using it to see what it was!
Oh you're missing the secrets right in front of your eyes... Flux is magic. It creates just the right surface tension so you need absolutely no skill with the soldering iron. You just put the heat in the area and everything kind of melts works supposed to with surface mount stuff. But the eyes thing. I feel you man. That's why there's one other secret to everybody who does surface Mount things regularly. We don't look at it. We look at the big screen for the camera or microscope. I still can't do the hand soldering if I have too much caffeine but you can do hot air.
Anyone can do surface mount work, just takes a bit of patience, practice and a microscope doesn't hurt. Believe in yourself! Also most people don't use flux because they use flux core solder, which is a more efficient method of applying flux at the same time as solder. It doesn't work if you wick your solder onto the tip and then touch the tip to the component though, so flux helps with that habit.
Wouldn’t be able to install this myself. So paid sombody to do it for me. Looks awesome and I feel better having watched you install it. Got the note 9 adapter aswell installed. You should get a psvsd (internal sd card) which replaces your 3g modem.

I bought a ps vita with a broken charge port for 50 euro's, and i didn't know that you could get a usb-c port for it, so i installed a micro-usb connector instead, but not where the original charge port was, but i installed it in place of the accessories connector. And i think it makes a bit more sence if you would like to use a regular playstation controller and charge the vita at the same time. Nevertheless a great video! The most annoying thing was to install those tiny data wires, i also used lacker wire and slightly bigger wires for the voltage side of things. But it works great and i used a quality port so i am happy with my result :) you earned a sub!
Holy moly your soldering is fantastic and so clean!!!!! I struggled with soldering some wires for a nerf gun and you make it look so easy and good! Amazing work!!
Can I express on this video how happy I am to have found someone who actually repairs electronics rather than just prettifying them up? I just watched a video where a UA-camr supposedly "restored" a non-functional PSOne. He spent fifteen minutes of the 20-minute video cleaning the outside of the console (with the wrong product, to crown the hilarity), one minute stabbing the circuit board randomly with a multimeter, and four minutes reassembling it and 'playing a game with it'. This despite the fact that he didn’t fix the actually broken power button, he didn’t even seem to check the giant malsoldered mod spidering across the circuit board, and he didn’t even try to hide the fact that the PSOne never actually turned on when he purported to show that it did. There's a place for superficial restoration (especially with respect to mechanical objects, where superficial restoration very often IS restoration - you can't use a rusted poppy seed grinder or a level with a rusted uneven edge), but I'm tired of electronics being prettified instead of properly restored. Thanks for not being one of those UA-camrs, and thanks for honesty. I’d rather see you fail than see one of these guys fake success any day.
Very unfortunate that you did this video just when the mod is out of stock for the rest of the summer, It got me very interested swapping the port just for the sake of it (getting rid of as much proprietary stuff as possible). It's been a while since you asked, but if you are still looking, look into the pinecil soldering iron. It's about $26.00 US. Right now, it's out of stock, since they are releasing a new version, but should be back in stock in a few weeks. You can also get the Hakko FX-888D for about $100.00. UA-cam channel EEVBlog has a video where he recommends a $330 electronics repair setup if you want to know how to get started on a budget. My advice is to start off with a good soldering iron, multimeter, solder, solder wick, and of course, the blue silicon mat  Then start to repair, and as you need stuff, buy it. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get into repair, at least initially. Good luck!
