I can certainly see the appeal of this. It's a good way to recycle DS lites that have a broken top screen. I just feel that doing this to fully working DS lites is a bit of a waste.
I’m doing this with an almost perfect DS Lite, there is a few dead pixels on the top screen but I’m doing it because I have a perfectly working DS i and a 3DS so I have ways to play DS games even better, I have no way to play GBA games except on the DS Lite and I’d just rather have it like a Gameboy because its just more practical for me.

My suggestion to that is checking the top screen ribbon cable. It might be lose/badly connected or downright thorn. Some people say you can just take the screen away and do no solder mod to the board and it works, but from what I've repaired DSses and 3DSses they don't even boot up if the screen isn't present, or if the backlight isn't detected, which happens with a thorn ribbon cable. On the 3DS it thankfully happens more on the cheapest of the ribbons, which is the speakers, backlight and 3D slider ribbon, there's freakin' 3 ribbons on that hinge, cameras and screen being rolled inside the backlight ribbon so it sort of protects them a bit more. On a DS Lite tho... it means to replace the dang screen.
my shell had extra plastic that had to be removed first. Mine initially broke my battery slot. The thin gold color contacts/wire sheets got bent weird from forcing plastic into it. I fixed it after noticing what happened.

A broken top screen ribbon makes the DS Lite (and 3DS for that matter too) to just shut down suddenly. It's about detecting the backlight being present, or else it throws a fit, hence that resistor he soldered. Could it have been what happened to you?

Awesome replacement for a GBA carry around that runs legitimate cartridges, bigger than a Micro, and a good way to recycle a DS with a broken top but working bottom screen. (unfixable top screen flickering issue on mine due to the board but lower works great) It also allows you to use something like an R4 (if you don't block the DS slot) for backups, saves, and emulating copies of GBA games you own that may not be in the best condition anymore. Besides filling, there's a lot of face plates you can buy (similar to the aluminum one but afaik you do have to modify the board for that one) that give a more finished or customized look you may want.

Wow that led light mod is smart it looks great and as if someone put extra work into it not less.
You did a great job! Much respect for giving broken hardware a second life.
