  • Here is my rusty Ohio 1980 Long Bed Toyota Pickup Truck that I purchased for just $600! It has the 20R engine and an automatic transmission. It leaks oil, gas, brake fluid and trans fluid, and the body is extremely rusty, but I look forward to the challenge of a full frame-off restoration/build to get this truck back on the road!
    Oh and I also shipped another 1980 Long Bed parts truck up from western Oklahoma, because you can't have too many Toyotas!

    I bought a brand new 1980 SR5 Long Bed (beige color) for $5,995. Great truck, simple to work on but a bit of a rust bucket from Illinois winters.

      nice! Rust really is the Achilles heel of these trucks.

    Love the look of the blue truck as it sits. I’d make it look like that, but with less rust……

    This is very similar to what I did a couple years ago. Had a low mileage 1984 3/4 ton 2wd long box with a rotten frame that I frame swapped and built up with a donor 1987 2wd. You don’t even need a hoist to remove the body, I was able to sling the cab and box off with a regular engine crane. I would recommend you try and find the heavier front sway bar from a 3/4 or 1 ton model for better cornering at highway speeds with a load on the back. The parts for these 2wd trucks are super affordable, and their really easy to put together. Your going to have a great time with this project! Let me know if you have any specific questions, would be happy to help out 🍻

    Are you still running the original toyota driveline on your lifted truck. I jist bought an 89 that's running the stock trans and axles, but it has a tbi 350 swapped in. I'm just wondering how strong the trans and axles are. So far, they seem to be ok, but I haven't driven the truck much since its a bit of a project. Thanks in advance.

    Did Toyota ever make the 20R with a points distributor?? If so would it fit a 22R?? (thinking EMPs)Tip on rear main seal leaks...I chased them for years (been driving same 1987 since 1987, 1/2 million miles) till I figured out its the seal retainer gasket 90% of the time...silicone them (I use Toyota black, easier to take apart then autozone RTV) and timing chain cover gaskets, also helacoil 12mm threaded hole on top on timing chain cover (bolt through the head under dist. gear) allows for a tighter bolt and no leaks there. Great price on the blue truck. the Weber is $350 alone...I run a 38mm, .50 lift cam, stroked, LCE stage 2 motor (cost more then your blue truck)...Went from 103HP to 160HP...blew up a G54 trans and 4cyl rear end...Found a R151F turbo trans (cost almost as much as your blue truck) and got a V6 rear end...Getting 17city and 19hwy mpg.....Get your parts store updated so we can help pay for your rebuild....

      This is my first 20r, I’m still learning. I’m actually surprised how different the first gens are from the second gen trucks. So far just gutting the interior has been a new experience for me. I’m excited for this build though… and I’m working on the store whenever I get a chance 😁

    looks like the parts truck has aftermarket a/c. if you have any interest in keeping that and making it work let me know. I have a few different 22r compressor brackets and all the stuff requited to make new a/c hoses.

      @@6thGearGarage the evap box is the hardest to find part for these trucks. its very easy and pretty cheap to upgrade all the under hood components to modern stuff.

    I have a truck similar to yours, mine is 1979 al so is blue and I'm looking for the Heater Hose Kit in case you want to sell it.

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  3 місяці тому

      I wouldn't buy a part like heater hoses used. That rubber is 40+ years old and not worth the headache of a possible coolant leak.

    If there is anything to do with Toyota utes l will click on it because l live in Australia and own a 1997 Toyota's Hilux rear wheel drive ute with the 22R motor and with a five speed gearbox mine is running driving and registered and four years ago l paid aud $1500 for it and no rust at all been Australia not much snow also it has an aluminium tray l see the ones from North America will rust because of the salting of the roads and many other older cars rust in the rust zone and Toyota spent billions of dollars replacing rusted chassis not in Australia l do like the 20R motor it's similar to the 22R motor just a bit less capacity to the 22R motor and 1997 was the last year of the 22R engine l am so happy to have one and it didn't appear in the Toyota Hilux until the mid 1990s as far as l know l will be interested in how your Toyota ute project pans out

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  5 місяців тому

      The 22r will live forever, but like you said it is the rust that kills these trucks around here. I wish the Hilux was available in the US. After 1995, US replaced it with the Tacoma.

    • @lesklower7281
      @lesklower7281 5 місяців тому

      @@6thGearGarage Fortunately most Hiluxes don't rust in Australia because there is no such thing as the rust belt so the ones with the 22R engine will go for a long time l know my 1997 Hilux will out live me and any 1997 Hilux with the 22R engine manual air-conditioning an aluminium tray and under 500000 kilometres are actually worth aud$5000 to $6000 and l have seen them sell for that
