  • IT'S BACK BABY! Jocko's 1982 Red Toyota Hilux is back and it's about to be better than ever!
The poor girl has been neglected for too long and it's time to complete the restoration to her former glory. From tired old rig to a timeless classic!
Jock's been working on it in his shed for the last year (when he isn't out on trips) - putting in a new engine, fixing up a second hand tub, completely pulling out the dash, transfer case mount and mocking up a custom gearbox crossmember!
Jocko shares where he is at with the restoration, what work has already been completed and what the final plan for the old girl is!

Yes more realistic. I just finished basically the same build in my shed. All DIY. It is a hard slog. No engine swap as I kept mine completely original. Looked like it just rolled of the factory floor in the end. Got a lot of attention everywhere I drove.

    HOT TIP!
When cutting and grinding where glass could be damaged, spray glass with lanolin spray. It will stay on for weeks and grinding sparks won't stick to the glass. Also lano is great for making rubber soft and black. Washes off with soapy water.
Hot tip no2, when painting in the engine bay and not removing wires, hoses etc you can wrap them with tin foil. Much quicker and easier than masking tape.

The 3rz-fe is a phenomenally reliable motor. I had one with 300,000 miles that ran like new. If Toyota could build a frame that didn’t rust in two, I’d still be driving it.

We had an old yellow Hilux on our cattle station, it literally rusted in half while driving it, but it still kept going because the tray hit the back of the cab preventing the snapped middle section of the chassis from dragging the ground, looked ridiculous driving around.
from then on it was known as the BananaLux

The 3RZ engine is an excellent choice. I have it in my US Hilux (a.k.a. Tacoma) and thrash it regularly. It was also found in the Surf/4Runner, so if it is capable in that vehicle with all that weight from the factory, then you know it's good. Won't get anywhere fast, but you will get there everytime.

I have to say, well done Jocko. I have rebuilt alot of the late 1960s and early 1970 ford F-100 trucks. First thing I always did was remove the bed and cab. Then rebuilt the rolling chassis. This gave me all the room I needed and kept me off the ground. Also a cab body sitting on blocks is easy to work on. Keep going with the build mate. It looks like a great project.

Older 3RZ motors are underrated. A little motor that loves to work, and loves to rev. Doesn't walk up steps like a 3 liter td but a little clutch tap will get you there. We went from 3RZ to 1KZ and I would go back in a heartbeat, the 3RZ is so much more a driver's engine.

Looking forward to this build. Brings back lots of memories. Panel beater mate and I recently finished restoring the complete body on my 1985 4WD Xtra Cab Hilux. I learnt a lot, quick. Ended up buying a 2WD version of the same year and grafting the entire roof, one of the rear pillars from it and used the bonnet as well. It was most valuable for the tub which was in good nick. So every corner, the front and tailgate were used. Couldn't use it whole as the side height was different and it didn't have the flared guards. A lot of cutting grinding and welding. Looks mint. The engine is still the original 3Y and I haven't done anything with it so far. Looking forward to seeing how yours goes. Trying to give myself inspiration.

I’m also building a 1979 rn46, mine was also an 18r with a 4spd but I’m converting it to a 3.8 ecotec with a r151 gearbox. Mine is also a slow build so I’m very keen to see how you go getting it done and on the road! Keep the videos coming please!
