    Huge thanks to Cheddar for sponsoring this video and supporting the channel!
    A few months ago, I got tired of spending all the time required to actually cook breakfast in the morning. So I went out, got a Nutribullet blender, and started experimenting with different smoothie recipes in order to create a good morning meal replacement.
    Today, I'm going to show you the recipe that ended up sticking. This is a nutritionally complete, healthy breakfast smoothie that takes less than 5 minutes to make, involves very little cleanup, and gives me a ton of energy.
    It also tastes really good (in my opinion, at least), which means I never dread making it - a very important factor when you're trying to build a food-based habit.
    Keep in mind that there are tons of different healthy smoothie recipes out there, so this is just one idea. I regularly swap out ingredients myself to add variety.
    Check my out the ingredient quantities and nutritional details here:

    I got the girls I nanny into smoothies when they were younger by calling it 'Ice cream smoothie'. Frozen fruit + plain unflavored yogurt = soft serve ice cream. We even added peanut butter to the banana smoothie or chocolate protein powder when they were older. Now when they have a break from online classes they pop into the kitchen, make a 'ice cream smoothie' and get back to studying. So proud

    The only suggestion I would make to your smoothie is pre-soaking your chia seeds. When they are dry they do help with acid reflux, but they are harder to digest than when they are soaked. When chia seeds are soaked in water or milk, it makes it easy for your body to absorb the nutrients.

    I make a smoothie every morning. To speed up the process I keep a container in the freezer with all my frozen berries, kale, spinach, beets, etc in it with an old protein powder scoop. If you don't care about having exactly 4 raspberries I'd recommend this. I also prep my dry ingredients (flax, chia, matcha, maca, spirulina, collagen, etc) into individual containers about once every 2 weeks. I loathed opening so many bags & containers everyday and now it only takes me 1 min to make breakfast!

    a smoothie each morning has been a standard for me for years now and your recipe is pretty much identical to mine, with the exception that I am an even bigger sucker for peanut butter and eat that stuff right out of the jar instead of mixing it.
    some more tips:
    - if you want to use a larger portion of frozen ingredients and perhaps less water, put in the frozen ingredients first and the bananas last (in case of nutribullet type blender, for normal blender it's vice-versa). having the mushy stuff close to the blades at start helps the blender picking everything up quickly.
    - rather than consuming the smoothie through a straw it's even better to pour it an a bowl and mix a couple of oats or sunflower seeds in - then you eat it with a spoon and the seeds and stuff enable you to chew it a little bit, which is very good as it the substance already stars to mix with important enzymes in your mouth. just make sure to brush your teeth 15 - 20 minutes after you finish.
    - this video kind of suggests that protein powder is a mandatory ingredient. most people don't need it though. only put that stuff in if you want to actively build muscle (which obviously MUST be accompanied by workout).
    - imho, vacuum blenders are actually worth the money. they aren't very established yet so you have only a few options, but I imagine that in the future most smoothie mixers will have a vacuum function to prevent oxidation. the result looks better, tastes better, and packs more nutrients (as in normal mixers, a lot gets lost due to oxidation)

      You could but you may have to tweak a little, the leafy greens, chia/flax seeds thicken as time goes by (even more when it cools overnight in the fridge) and the one time I did I ended up with something so thick it was undrinkable, so you may want to either put less of those, up the liquid ratio (if you use something bigger than a Nutribullet), or switch the almond milk to plain water. Hope this helps, let us know how it goes!

    I think a lot of people could benefit from nutritional videos as well. I too like to sometimes sub my usual breakfast for a smoothie similar to the one you made. I like to add peanut butter, because I love peanut butter, but I recently went to Costco and found that they have a peanut butter powder with “87% less fat” and “1/3 of the calories”. I find that it tastes exactly like the peanut butter I’ve been loving and eating my entire life and it’s easier and less messy to add to the smoothie. Anyway, as always, love the videos, podcasts and everything you feed us dude. Keep it up.

    I've been making a similar smoothie (Ok, I based mine entirely on your recipe after I listened to the podcast that you and Martin talked about how to get better at cooking, meal prep, smoothies, etc..) since I moved to Canada. It's been 2 and a half months now and I eat (maybe drink is better) the same thing every single day!
    - Half an avocado
    - Bunch of blueberries (frozen or not)
    - kale/spinach
    - unsweetened almond milk
    - protein powder (been using "VEGA Sport" whey)
    - Natural peanut butter (check the label. Ingredients section must contain only peanut and salt)
    That's so tasty, fast and healthy! in 5 minutes I make, drink and clean (just blend the bottle with hot water and soap after)
    The only downside for me is that I wake my roommate up every day with all the noise hahah
    (but he doesn't care gladly)

    Hi Thomas, I use to make a kind of the same smoothie and I would like to suggest a variation to what you currently do. Chia is a cereal and it is like oats more or less. I mix flax, sunflower and pumpkin seeds and none of them are cereals which do not produce intestinal gas. I also like to add the ginger root (a lot fibers and flavor). Ginger is a very good antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic, so your body will massively appreciate it if you train quite a bit. I also add a bit of cinnamon which leverages the absorption of sugar and taste good. Last but not the least, I always use just seasonal fruit for obvious reasons.
    Thanks for your recipe, it looks very good.
    Cheers

    Water
    Kale/spinach
    Flax/hemp/chia seeds
    Peanut butter
    Half frozen banana
    Handful of frozen blueberries
    Cinnamon
    A clean hormone free protein powder
    Mct oil
    It’s cold, healthy, and delicious
    I skip the oats and minimize the fruit to keep the carb/sugar count down (I’m on an adapted keto diet). The shake still has a ton of protein and calories in it.
    Ps
    The protein powder brand you’re using has a ton of ingredients in it. There are a few better and cleaner protein powder options you can find on Amazon (around $55 for 5lbs)

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  5 років тому +1

      Do you have a brand recommendation? I use grass-fed whey for my normal protein shakes - I think I opted for ON whey for these since I go through it faster. But I might just switch fully to the grass-fed stuff and be ok with the cost increase.

    • @SunsetSheen
      @SunsetSheen 5 років тому +2

      Thomas Frank Levels Nutrition and Pure are the 2 brands I’ve tried. Both offer 5lb options on Amazon for less than $60. They have minimal ingredients and taste great 👍🏼
      There is also Naked Whey which I’ve heard good things about but it’s around the $85 price point.
      I used to use Met-RX powder and a few other bigger brands that can be found at Vitamin Shoppe before switching to healthier stuff. Personally I was happy to pay a bit more for the peace of mind of knowing I was consuming a “cleaner” protein source, but it’s all a personal choice.
      Thanks for the reply and great video man.

    Good idea Thomas! I'm always looking to optimize the time of daily tasks as well.
    Do you think doing this shake by night and storing in the refrigerator is ok?
    The blender noise can cause some problems in the morning.
    But I'm afraid it can lose some of it's properties by not beeing "fresh".

  • @29Strannica
    @29Strannica 5 років тому +7

    I talked to a dietitian about smoothies, and she said that we need to grind chia & flax seeds before they go into the drink. In her words, our digestive track cannot break down these seeds (they simply go through our system). So it’s better to consume ground seeds, it increases an absorption of nutrients. This’s what I heard.

    • @knz730
      @knz730 5 років тому +4

      Definitely not true re. chia seeds. They begin breaking down when moisture is added (which is why they have a jelly effect if left for a while) and even whole dry chia seeds are easily chewed (but gross, don't do that).

    • @hepotitus
      @hepotitus 5 років тому

      And if you consume dry seeds make sure to drink enough water, otherwise you'll get the WORST stomach pains when they absorb the moisture in your stomach. Speaking from experience :(

    • @MarcAllins
      @MarcAllins 5 років тому

      Besides, one of the main things that his blender advertises is how it grounds seeds and such so it's still fine to add those in
