I don't think JC would agree with Marx on some things... but Jesus WAS indeed FOR CERTAIN a socialist of a different type, and He disdained the wealthy, the Roman Caesars & their corruption, and the hypocrites who were only outwardly religious.
If only Dr. Peterson could have informed the angst which I adopted from George Carlin.. I may not have been so proudly cynical and might have even got off my ass from time to time in my teens.
Alright, let's see this. Let's have a handy-dandy quiz! "Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up for treasure for the last days. Behold, the wages of the labourers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter." Is this a quote from... A - A violent Marxist revolutionary B - The *fucking Bible*
Marxism ultimately boiled down: The one who is unwilling to work shall work or die, no sit-back "reaping what you do not sow" capitalism allowed!" "I pledge my allegiance, to the flag"... A Christian socialist.
@@letsomethingshine The workshy won't die if they don't reap what they sowed, i.e. if they don't reap an income from their toil to feed themselves. Out of necessity, they will just start working/sowing and reaping (an income) like everyone else. There's nothing like an empty stomach to focus the mind on what is important. Note also that the verse says, "unwilling to work," not "can't work due to illness or infirmity" (they should be cared for) or "because there IS no work." In biblical times when there was no work, people would voluntarily become slaves. It was either that or they and their family would starve. In those cases, slave owners are called upon to treat their slaves well in the bible, i.e. it doesn't condone slavery at all, but where it does exist, slaves should be treated well. Work is GOOD for people, so in a roundabout way, not feeding the workshy is GOOD for them because it will get them off their backsides and get them to be productive members of society. Proverbs 6:6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! Ants are busy, ants are workers, ants get things done, ants don't expect to sit on their bony little asses and wait to be fed, ants are wise. Be like the ant. The bible teaches us to look after the genuinely sick and the widow elsewhere, so they are not left out of the equation. A person pledging their allegiance to a national flag is a nationalist. Nationalism (the worship/adoration of the nation state) is idolatrous. We are called to worship the Creator, not created things, which is idolatry. Idolatry is anathema (condemned) in the bible, besides, Christians are not of this WORLD, let alone of a nation state... John 15: 18,19 If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. We're just passing through, but we are expected to be industrious and to work hard in the process in order to set a good example to others... 2 Thessalonians 3: 7~10 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, 8 nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. 9 We did this to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” In short, there is no such thing as a Christian Socialist, the term is an oxymoron, in this case, delivered by a moron... oxymoron /ˌɒksɪˈmɔːrɒn/ _noun._ a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction. moron /ˈmɔːrɒn/ _noun._ a stupid person. And before you say that's unChristian, Jesus called fools.... fools and we are predestined to be conformed to His likeness... Romans 8:29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. So if Jesus can call a fool a fool (which is true), then we can also, in fact we should in the hope that they will come to their senses.
@@dustyhendrix1218 Two people have posted opposing views and yet you don't offer a single clue as to which one doesn't understand Marxism according to you. If it's me, the bible is clearly opposed to a welfare state and in favour of personal responsibility, whereas a welfare state is one of the things that underpins a Marxist/Socialist country, meaning that the bible is opposed to Marxism/Socialism. It's not rocket science. If it's the other person, then I agree, he clearly doesn't understand Marxism. Oh and your comment, "You are misunderstanding Marxism" (without any evidence) is something Marxists say all the time when their ideology is exposed for what it is, i.e. "Ahh, but that isn't Marxism." lmao
oldnikonian I disagree with you when you say Marxism and Christianity are inherently opposing beliefs. I could quote innumerable verses from both Old and New Testament that call upon not individuals, but groups of people to care for the needy. Marxism is a collectivist ideology that believes society should take care of the underprivileged. Marxism isn’t “give free stuff to lazy ppl”. It’s an alternative to capitalism. This idea of democratizing the means of production to make a just society is much more in line with Jesus of Nazareth than the selfish consumerist one we live in today.

@Schizo Neo Is it the smartphone's fault? A smartphone is only a tool, and everyone uses it, therefore if the evil was in the smartphone itself, everyone should be incapable of formulating thoughts and phrases, but it doesn't seem like society is in that state yet, despite 10+ years since the birth of smartphones. Also, most people you talk about are people that grew up having a smartphone for at most 8 years, but more probably for 6-7, by that time they should've been taught enough to be able to write in a proper manner (That would probably differ from what the sleep deprived me is writing right now), therefore the problem is not in the smartphone, but in the educators that did poor work, be it the teachers or the parents, at socializing and teaching the child in order to make him a functioning thinking adult, or maybe the child wasn't born to use language to think, rather being more able to work on numbers or pictures. But yeah, keep demonizing a piece of technology that makes your life easier and that you yourself definitely use a couple hours a day instead of actually having to encounter the burden to think about the real causes of a missed proficiency in language that may or may not actually exist, because you in fact took only a small sample in your "time tutoring college students" and you probably are cherry picking the worst ones while forgetting about the fact that the brilliant ones might have not even needed your help to begin with. @@tyronejones4245 Well, if you have millions of people starving while 1% are overindulging, as a consequence of the exploitation of the 99%, this statement would in essence be true. The law of self preservation states that people will do what they need to do, in order to survive. That certainly does not exclude killing their oppressors. In fact, this is a theme throughout history, regardless of the social order. I personally think that the reason capitalism is being sold so hard to the masses, is because it serves as a catalyst for the preservation of the 1%. @Bullet Anarchy ok. What is the solution to that? Is it communism? Because that results in not only class struggle but the government who ARE the rich people enslaving and murdering the poor and makes any one who commits a crime untouchable.
@Bullet Anarchy you said class struggle is the problem, communism not only makes that and EVERYTHING worse it makes the government extremely rich AND able to commit genocide, slavery and get away with crimes not only Scot free but you DIE for pointing it out because the government who are the 1% have complete control while most poor people just starve. It is an incorrect limit on God’s power, and essentially falsely condemn millions of people who God ordered us to reach for His glory. When you look in the book of acts the early church was founded on communistic principles. Each gave all they had to the church and took as each needed and God killed those who lied about their giving.
@@stevenlubbers7236 I would agree that you make a good point about that. However, I would also say that the early Church isn't quite the same as an entire economic system. It was a small group of individuals who were on the fringes of society that didn't have too much of an economic impact on the Roman Empire. Also, the giving was based on an honoring of God's call to give charitably and His command to go preach the Gospel. There was a mission they were given. Socialism doesn't have a mission besides to provide everyone equal outcome.
Peterson's style of speaking reminds me of Richard Feynman. They both have a lot of energy, humor, thoughtfulness and respect for people, while reflecting on the absurdity of some situations.
Outside the boundaries of the mathematics of economics, one of the fundamental failures of Karl Marx, his vision for society, was his profound lack of understanding of human nature in its many facets. It goes a long way to explaining how the constructs of his system eventually collapse.
He also had the ridiculous and simplistic idea that society divided into two groups; the oppressed proletariat and the oppressing bourgeoise. It's a really, really stupid idea. I believe it is one of the reasons we have so many ....ists and .....isms floating around these days. Unfortunately cultural Marxism has taken hold in many countries and most especially academia. This means many post graduates now working in media or government have unconsciously absorbed Marxist thought and they are constantly looking for victim groups so their Marxist theories make sense. Markedly different than the consumerism of todays Western culture. Acts 4:32-35 (NIV) 32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

I'm going to guess that by "Marxist" she meant "communist" and believed everyone should share everything in common. Which is a pretty solid New Testament idea until you get into the ugly real-life details of how communism in units bigger than immediate families virtually always pans out. On a side note, I want to add a degree of nuance to the statement at 12:26 that in the Judaeo-Christian tradition there's no group guilt. This is true in the sense that I think he intended it, but not in a broad sense. I think he basically was saying that the race or class of people you were born into doesn't automatically define your standing with God. For example, just because you were born an Ammonite doesn't mean you're inherently guilty of the sins of other Ammonites and can't personally live a godly life; or just because you're wealthy in a time when God is fed up with the shallow and abusive practices of the upper class doesn't mean you can't personally be generous and altruistic and favored in God's sight. Which is totally true. It's also true though that there are a lot of occasions in the Old Testament where Israel paid dearly for tolerating the sins of the people--even individual people's sins could result in mass plagues etc. There is a sense in the Bible of group responsibility to maintain a culture of faithfulness. The Bible takes place in a collectivistic culture and definitely bears the characteristics of that collectivistic cultural mentality.

It's silly to you to consider that people took away from Jesus's words and actions that maybe we should not worship the aquisision of wealth? And maybe we should explore new ways of doing economics where people profit from their labor and aren't exploited by the laborer?
I wonder how well Jordan knows his own Bible. Jesus made it clear: by your own efforts, your chance to get into heaven is exactly zero. It can't be done. This is indeed a very depressing realization, and not an 'opiate' at all. But Jesus also said the only way to get to Heaven is to realize the above, and beg for mercy from God, who will forgive you and grant you eternal life. This is the promise and guarantee of Heaven. It's not based on what we do, it's based on what he did to rescue us from Hell.

Marx stole his poem. Somone else dreamed of building his throne higher than the heavens...that didn't work out so well either. Same old 3 lies he was spruiking back in the day.
This bit in the poem by Marx "I shall build my throne high overhead" 21:10 reminded me of this bit in the Bible: "You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high" when it talks about Lucifer. (Isaiah 14:12-14)
The priest at our church said something along the lines of we pray for ourselves to carry out God’s plan, and I realized that makes Christianity the antithesis of any statist ideologies (fascism/socialism/communism) as those seek to create the state’s vision, which cannot at the same time be God’s as it isn’t all knowing. Nice coincidence to see this today too.

B - The *fucking Bible*
@@firetarrasque4667 Hidden option C. It's from the Bibble
****"I'm a Christian and a Marxist"****
The Christian bible: The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10
).
Marxism ultimately boiled down: The one who is unwilling to work shall work or die, no sit-back "reaping what you do not sow" capitalism allowed!"
"I pledge my allegiance, to the flag"...
Note also that the verse says, "unwilling to work," not "can't work due to illness or infirmity" (they should be cared for) or "because there IS no work."
In biblical times when there was no work, people would voluntarily become slaves.
Proverbs 6:6
Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!
10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”
In short, there is no such thing as a Christian Socialist, the term is an oxymoron, in this case, delivered by a moron...
oxymoron
/ˌɒksɪˈmɔːrɒn/ _noun._ a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction.
moron
/ˈmɔːrɒn/ _noun._ a stupid person.
And before you say that's unChristian, Jesus called fools.... fools and we are predestined to be conformed to His likeness...
Romans 8:29
For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
So if Jesus can call a fool a fool (which is true), then we can also, in fact we should in the hope that they will come to their senses.

@@dustyhendrix1218 Two people have posted opposing views and yet you don't offer a single clue as to which one doesn't understand Marxism according to you.

If communism makes class struggle WORSE, and everything worse what benefit has it shown to have.
This is infinitely worse than capitalism and makes what you want to solve worse, while making everything terrible.
@Bullet Anarchy you completely misrepresented my argument because you know it's true but you dont care about the outcomes of communism such as slavery, genocide and theft.
@Bullet Anarchy where? The soviet union murdered at least 30 million people and put the poor in camps to work or they were shot. When you punish people for offering value and jobs people don't work, when people don't want to work they get killed.
The fact that you KNOW what communism did, read what I said and are lying shows your intentions are NOT AT ALL GOOD. Why are you defending a system that killed over 130 million people and STARVES the poor? Do you even care about the poor? The answer is no or you would would want capitalism to make things cheap enough to afford.
@Bullet Anarchy ok. When someone in capitalism wants you to work for them do they threaten to imprison you? Do they kill you and take your money? Do they take your family?
YOU can't get a job without an interview, not only is work voluntary it's hard to come by because you have to offer money to an employee.

flabiger: I am fairly conservative and a big proponent of capitalism p, as I believe it to be the most fair economically, but the idea that Christianity doesn’t mix with different economic structures is purely incorrect. It is an incorrect limit on God’s power, and essentially falsely condemn millions of people who God ordered us to reach for His glory. When you look in the book of acts the early church was founded on communistic principles. Each gave all they had to the church and took as each needed and God killed those who lied about their giving.
To clarify: there is a big difference between Marxism and economic structures. Marxism attempts to define morality and economic structure

If there is no oppressed group it must mean Marx is wrong and that creates a cognitive dissonance that they find uncomfortable so they go looking for, and find, the oppressed and their oppressors.

But Jesus also said the only way to get to Heaven is to realize the above, and beg for mercy from God, who will forgive you and grant you eternal life. This is the promise and guarantee of Heaven. It's not based on what we do, it's based on what he did to rescue us from Hell.

Nailed it entirely.
5:39 kinda interesting/funny to see him mentally trying to figure out the best descriptive word and physically playing it out
It makes me giddy when Professor Peterson is in his wit. 😂
Excellent talk. Great beard style too. Inspiring!
We are contraindication machines. "I only want to be loved" "I love you!" "Not by you!"
*_The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function._*
~ F. Scott Fitzgerald
I think it is to consider not hold.
That's why wisdom trumps raw intelligence.
I'm a Christian and a Marxist...NO...lol...I love Dr. Peterson's wit & humor.
I'm an atheist and a capitalist... and one of my favorite quotes is, "God helps those who help themselves." ;}
that is no where in the bible!
18:00 "If you had to pick someone who seemed to revolve around themselves it would be a pretty decent competition between Mao and Stalin, and that didn't seem to be for the best."
Jordan has a gift for understatement which I find very amusing.
I'm not a Marxist and I'm a horrible Christian but I've always looked up to you for sound psychological advice. One of the things I've always appreciated is how much sound information you can deliver per second per word, I must say even though you have delivered some very great information in this video it's probably the worst one I can relate to, I think that maybe it's just good to know you're human too. Please don't let popularity cloud your commitment, we really need you. You have worked your ass off and delivered so much free information to people so even if you quit today thank you. My brother-in-law owns The institute for behavioral change and my sister you know she was into psychology and it has caused nothing but conflict for me I went straight into the Marine Corps and got the hell out of Philadelphia and I've been nothing but a drunk for 20 years 8 years ago I cleaned myself up, this is the short version, my life wasn't a total waste I promise you but why I did what I did and why I felt when I felt I just find so much peace and understanding in your lectures. If you start turning into a circus Guy this is going to suck even more than you know. At the end of the day my own recovery which part has to be a better civilian which sucks by the way is not based upon your lectures it's based upon my own balls and backbone but your lectures give me a structure of information that I've never heard before and it makes total sense. Think you're awesome please keep it up.
"A good poem communicates before it is understood"I understand that that phrase much better now I can link it to what you said about poems being the place for ideas that aren't fully formed yet. Thank you.
i dont need religion or Marxism. all i need is Jordan B Peterson.
Matthew 10:34
"i bring not peace, but a sword"
- Jesus Christ.
A sword is necessary and mandatory right now!! no more bullshit about peace, brotherhood, love, etc, etc. Did not work 2000 years ago, it is not working right now. Humans will never change.
It's a metaphorical sword, he explains he's going to divide people. He told his desciples whoever lives by the sword dies by it
The most sophisticated roast I have ever seen 😂😂
@Jordan You should have a second Twitter ID for listening to the views of those who block you. *Just for listening,* or it will just get blocked too. It is good for those "Twitter personalities" who want to talk but not listen, who want to teach never learn.
It is good for following those who "personalities" would rather "preach to the choir" than make an effort at converting someone.
"SJ" types have apps like "Block Together", "Twitter Block Chain", and "The Unblocker" which make it easy for bigoted people to eliminate the risk of hearing opinions they disagree with.
(FYI for others: Intolerance of ideas a person disagrees with, and a love for their ideas they hold, is the actual definition of bigot. Bigotry is about the intolerance of ideas, not skin colors. Some SJW and Antifa people innocently argue bigotry is a good idea.)
That would perhaps be good, but it's not peterson's style to create a fake account. That's a kind of lie, after all.
"And I thought.... NO." :D
Deconverted Man ?? What? Could you explain lol I’m lost
@@ipancham9980 money can't buy happiness.
@Guy LaDouche“Storing up all your riches and your wealth
Will only bring you down”, they say,
I guess I’ll never know ua-cam.com/video/GZji4Xff6O8/v-deo.html
Deconverted Man Wealth is a matter of time, effort and know-how, so honestly it’s not difficult
My bad, didn’t finish the statement, it’s a bad habit
Anyway if you get rid of those three things then you can gain wealth really was so that’s otherwise a no-brainer. What wealth does (or should do) is guarantee safety, not being happiness.
Holy smokes I thought Jordan lost it judging by the title. 😂
Good to see Dr. Peterson in such great shape. He was on fire that evening. He even had comedic timing on top of his usual brilliance.
