You and your thinking are the proof of evil, and if we can prove true evil in the world, goodness must exist for there to be a balance.
How is it that you can believe in climate change, with zero physical experience, to prove it (meaning, it has not directly affected you on a catastrophic level)? Because you, I would assume, have no expertise in the matter, but believe what others have told you regarding it. Just watch An Inconvenient Truth (2006), just to give you an example of what the so called "experts" go so outrageously wrong, regarding Global Warming. The great irony between the 3 great monotheist religions of the world is they believe in the same diety, share some of the same stories and believe many of the same ideas. God in the Christian religion is the same God in Judaism and Allah in Islam.
It's the dogma that is put upon them that divides us, the arbitrary rules put upon us by other humans not the mere revelation of the Divine. It's the conflicts between Catholics and Prodestants, Sunni and Shia, Jewish pograms throughout history.. Unlucky people just are going through losing streaks of simply doing the wrong things at the wrong time, all the time. lucky ones are just going through winning streaks or doing the right thing most of the time. If you believe in "God" as the biblical god with exact words and commands, then that requires more extraordinary proof than saying I believe there may be a creator for life in this world. Most People who say they believe in god mean they have faith that he exists. They have faith he exists, they think it is the most logical conclusion to reach, but god is not a reality, rather a hope. To believe is not the same as to know. We never say we believe in what we know beyond a doubt. It does not mean we lose the right to say that, because knowing is in the intellect. Action is spurred by the will and to say our will ALWAYS acts in union with our beliefs is not the case...the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. In my faith, I've found that it has not been those who necessarily agreed with me who have helped me grow, but rather, those who have challenged me and asked deep, honest questions from a place of critical curiosity, questions I have had to search our myself. It is in seeking the hard answers to the questions of my critics that I have grown in my own faith.
Mr. Peterson raises a valid point - belief implies moral obligation. I think if most Christians are honest, they're honest about how often we fall short of our own ideals. And it's one thing to acknowledge God's grace, to know that we are forgiven for however many times we fail. But it's another to strive for the best, to desire to follow Jesus' example to the full. Frankly, I don't think we can do that without acknowledging grace; otherwise, our tendency would be to give up completely the first time we fail. Grace motivates us, in that we want to please this great God who is willing to overlook our shortcomings and empower us to succeed.
Mr. Peterson, my hope is that you know the grace of God.

Perhaps, rather than saying "I believe in God", a Christian should say, "I need God." Jesus warned against pride, self-righteousness, and self-sufficiency. As Peterson has said in other contexts, a person should recognize his/her capacity for evil. The Hebrew prophet Jeremiah put it this way: "The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out."A Christian should recognize his/her need for grace and forgiveness.

After having listened to the entirety of this video clip, I'm struck with how fascile of a question, "do you believe in God?", Really is, and how much more it says about the questioner?
The thoughtfulness with which Peterson answers or attempt to answer his reluctance with this question should totally shame his detractors who seize on this question as a weakness in his arguments.
In my mind, both the curiosity and the implication that it is highly probable that Jordan Peterson is right now the best and most honest advocate for Christianity as a moral framework in the modern world, are astounding and compelling.
I am truly at a loss as to whether this says more about the state of Christianity itself or the impressiveness of Jordan Peterson.

Brother. I just realized many people who aren't Christians could be more Christian than even priest, pastors, popes, prophet. You can see Peterson has more fear of God than most Christians. Because, I now can see I never really gave a deep look at what it means to believe in God. It's just not an answer of yes or no. Even the book of James says it. "You believe in God, thou doest well but demons believe and tremble" meaning your belief in God is not enough. Do you live like he exists? A lot of us including me will say we do believe but don't live like he exists.

I love seeing Peterson wrestle with God as he's talking about how the people of God are those who wrestle with God. And I completely agree with Peterson that an "integrated" person, an honest person, will act out their beliefs so that they follow through with what they say they believe. But that being said, with all of his study of the Bible (which is really extensive), he still somehow missed the main point of the whole thing. In John chapter 1:14 it says, "for those who believed in his (Jesus') name, he gave them the right to be children of God." And then a few chapters later in the same book John introduces Jesus as "the sacrificial lamb of God." And then at the end of the book, when Jesus is hanging on the cross looking down at the people who nailed him there, he prayed to God and said, "Father forgive them for they know not what they do." The whole of scripture is telling us that if we seek to EARN the right to be a child of God before we simple put our faith in how good he is, then we will never actually get there. Peterson said multiple times, "I don't feel like I have the right to say I believe in God!" But this idea of putting your faith in God, faith even the size of a mustard seed that's so small but will grow into a huge tree, is enough for you to gain the RIGHT to become a child of God. It isn't that we earn anything good. The bible also says "for what we earn is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Being a child of God is a gift from him, and this gift of incredible sacrifice on his part should actually motivate us through gratitude to seek to do good in the world. If it is used as an excuse to continue practicing evil then it is simply an insult to the cross and shows that the person doesn't understand how truly serious and excruciating Jesus' sacrifice was.
So, I love a lot of what Peterson said here, but if he could just grasp the idea that he doesn't have to "do good" to earn the right to be a believer in God, he simply has to recognize that he isn't good but Jesus paid the price for his lack of goodness, then he will experience a freedom to do good without the weight of guilt on his shoulders. "All who confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in their heart that God raised him from the dead will be saved." This is what it means to believe in God. Admit that Jesus is Lord of all to yourself and others and believe that Jesus historically raised from the grave through the power of God.

Ethelred Hardrede I’m sorry you’ve been told that you’re going to hell, if I had to guess the main two reasons evangelicals say that is due to either non-belief or homosexuality, and just know not all Christians think that, I REDACTED IN CASE THIS WAS THE REASON THE POST IS NOT HERE and have had my fair share of doubt, and it’s honestly sad to see my own people ruin such a fantastic idea for brotherhood and peace. But on your comment about that the Bible implicitly states that people are burning in hell you gotta remember that a lot of the Bible speaks in metaphors. Plus, there are verses and stories that state no one is burning but simply a prisoner. Look at the story of Jesus’s descent into hell, it’s stated that after Jesus died he immediately marched down to the gates of hell, and when he threw them open it’s stated that everyone from the Old Testament was there, but they weren’t burning but rather were in shackles awaiting judgement, until Jesus released them and as a group all of them marched up to Heaven. To add more upon the idea that no one is burning but awaiting judgement look at 2 Peter 2:4 “For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgement.” So the Bible actually says no one is burning but being held prisoner until Judgement day when Christ returns. As for the term Hell not being in the Bible, that’s true. The term I was referring to when I said Hell is Gehenna. But the Bible implies that only when Christ returns and a person’s name is not in the Book of Life will they be sent to Gehenna.
      -----
" if I had to guess the main two reasons evangelicals say that is due to either non-belief or homosexuality,"
For going reality and evidence. Which results in not believing.
" just know not all Christians think that"
In denial of the Bible at least in regards to non belief.
"my fair share of doubt, "
Well start going on evidence instead of an unwarranted belief.
"But on your comment about that the Bible implicitly states that people are burning in hell you gotta remember that a lot of the Bible speaks in metaphors"
When believers find it convenient clear statements that are not treated as metaphor in the Bible, become metaphors or allegories. Despite the parables being clearly labeled.
"Plus, there are verses and stories that state no one is burning but simply a prisoner."
The Bible has many contradictory claims. Not my doing.
" Look at the story of Jesus’s descent into hell, it’s stated that after Jesus died he immediately marched down to the gates of hell,"
Where did you find that? Its not in the Bible. Just checked. Its not. Its a story made up much later.
" To add more upon the idea that no one is burning but awaiting judgement look at 2 Peter 2:4 “"
Are you aware that most Biblical scholars are pretty darn sure that Peter 2 was made up by someone else later?
"So the Bible actually says no one is burning"
It can interpreted otherwise. The Bible has many contradictions. The most parsimonious interpretation of the Bible is that was written by men. Many men, none of them with any special knowledge. Just like any other book.

Proclaiming you believe in God is, like he said, a very heavy statement to make. We're held at those standards and work towards them, but inherently we will never live up to them because we're human. That's where grace is so important. And you can't fully break down religion into logic because of faith. Inherently religion requires you to have faith because you'll never have any evidence that proves it. But going back to my original thought, what a wonderful talk.

The dream and intuitive nature always take into account subjective reality--and thank God for that, or some of us might be robots.

I have struggled with the exact same question for a long time. How can I claim that I believe when I often ignore the suffering of others, or even worse, make conscious decisions to sin? In that moment of sin, there is no reasonable explanation other than I have a lack of faith. It's that simple. However, we're all in good company, as St. Paul struggled with the exact same issue.

I hate myself for continually falling short of Yahovah's glory and perfection! I hate that I can't do it on my own! People get tired of me cause I'm always talking about Yahovah. Just 1 word mentioned in a conversation will cause me to think of him! I've always been like this too! In 7the grade the buddies I talked to about it called me preacher Dave. My wife can't stand it neither but, I understand now that that's me! It's just who i am. I believe we are all here for His glory, and that we are created with purpose. No I'm not a "good man"! If I claimed that I was, I'd be a liar! Sometimes fear is our friend. If you pay attention to scripture, you'll begin to see His character, and glory, and notice that He takes a thing like fear, and rightfully use it to his advantage, and for our benefit! He told us that He did not give us a heart of fear, yet He tells us "blessed is he who fears Yahovah"! That's my point anyway! Fear is unholy! But when used by The Holy one, it is righteous because who he is! Remember, "there are none like Him'! I should fear Him more! I truly love Him, but my actions aren't serving others enough! I'm always some kinda addict! Weather it's football games, beer, cigarettes, marijuana, prescription drugs cause, I dont think there's any difference in His eyes between weed and what the law allows to be prescribed! It's ignorant to think they're ok. But I'm Guilty! It seems unfair too. We didn't even ask to be here! But look at creation for heaven sakes! It has love written all over it! I'm so thankful that he willed me and all of y'all to be here too! But he is a righteous judge of men! And when he returns, it's not gonna be good! Daddy's upset with his mischievous children! And when he's mad people die! Which is why his coming is restrained! But the prophecies are being fulfilled, that lead to that great and terrible day! But YES, I BELIEVE! Yahovah's blessings

The difference between other religions and Christianity is this one verse, by grace through faith you have been saved. You don't work for your salvation. Real Christians don't just believe, they know. When you repent and trust in Jesus, God personally changes your heart from one that relishes in sin to one that loves righteousness. This is not to say that you aren't a Christian, I just thought this should be specified

Hey there :) Jesus said if you sin you are a slave to sin, but if the Son sets you free you shall be free indeed! Jesus nailed sin/addictions on the cross and we can be totally freed through His sacrifice and by the cleansing of His Holy Spirit !! Are you born again of the Holy Spirit? Jesus said that unless a man is born again he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. In order to be born again (and start the path of salvation) you must surrender your whole life to Jesus and *repent* from all sin. Jesus also said that if you don’t pick up your cross everyday you’re not worthy of Him, and that’s what we’re called to do!
The Bible says that without holiness no one will see the Lord, we must stop practicing sin in order to truly build a relationship with God. Bless you! ☺️🙏🏻

Much respect to hear an educated thinker describe the complexity of the question, Do you believe in God? Much of the western world who grew intellectually stopped growing spiritually. Their view of God remains a white haired man with a beard, drawn with crayons sitting on a cloud. Some people grew and are growing spiritually as they are growing intellectually for their whole lives. These two ways of knowing compliment each other like the mind and the heart.
Who will I be if I am my complete and full authentic self if I seek to find with my full human ability? Is that not what God would expect of me? What constraints or rules will I live between? With a rich understanding of the histories of spiritual and intellectual philosophy and psychology growth our expectations can become exceptionally high and seemingly out of reach. We are not gods, we are human.
Jordan Peterson speaks of the difficulty of trying to seek the fullest understanding the deeply profound life changing belief in God. He speaks of stepping into the world each day physically and intellectually with the full weight of all the thinkers that came before him. It could feel like feeling unworthy, and still crawling through mud. For me, I cannot live life under that weight.
I choose to believe in goodness and love, and in my own little humble corner of the world that is God to me. It is enough to push me to the best version of me i the world where I live, and encourages me when I fail. Yes, it seems simple yet it is not, and I cannot face each day feeling paralyzed.

Belief and allegiance are two seperate things. What Jordan described in this video is allegiance to God. That is a heavy responsibility and is shown to be true through the way you live. Just to have belief in God has no responsibility whatsoever, even as the Bible describes, the satan and the demons believe in God aswell but work with all their might to corrupt God's good creation. To truly believe in God and to give your allegiance to Him, is an act of humility. To know that you are a flawed sinner in need of a savior and to trust in the One who atoned for your sins and rose from the dead, is true belief and allegiance. Then once you have done that, you will, as Paul describes in Romans, be conformed to the image of the Son of God. You will be made into a new creation, in the now but also in the not yet, in the age to come.

      @michaeldeal4846 3 роки тому +13

I agree. The quote from Mark chapter 10, verse 18 is: "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone." I can see how one might on a quick reading assume that it means "Only God is good, so I (Jesus) am not good." However, many biblical scholars think, based on what follows and from other verses in the Gospels, that by replying in this manner Jesus is leading the man to a truer knowledge of who he is; that is, he is God and not just a "good teacher" as the man had just addressed him. So it seems that Jordan doesn't use this quote accurately here. In the bigger picture, I think Jordan is just hung up on what "I believe" means. A lot of Christians probably think deep down: "I can't be 100% sure of anything metaphysical, but I will live and act as if God, and Jesus, do exist."
