It pulls me back to the conclusions I made when I overcame my depression, that you cant leave the feedback loop that is self destructive and depressing behavior without moving the self. @@lifewasgiventous1614 I think one of his points was we each need to honestly determine that for ourselves - that we have an inner utility designed to guide us in the proper direction.
I think where people run into trouble is when they are not honest with themselves. That can become easier and easier over time until we have chosen dishonestly so often that we can convince ourselves that any action, no matter how horrible, can be justified.
And, apparently, it can happen pretty fast, according to the book he mentioned about the German police going to Poland.
To say Peterson is well-read is an understatement. He has relied on, over time, his own inner compass to pull out of his readings the things that seem true to him.
      It can take a lifetime.
Until then, just stay out of prison. Johnny law and the system won't hesitate to let you know what they think is true.

I don’t agree with everything Peterson says. But no one should.
I watch him because the way he speaks is like he is constantly thinking out loud and trying to organize his thoughts to speech in a careful manner. Like a direct path to his thoughts.
There is a deep honesty in the way the man speaks that I think isn’t very common anymore. It’s the reason I think a lot of people are drawn to him and why he seems to do so well in debate. There isn’t anything hidden behind what he says, no sugar coated ulterior motives ever so present in discussion these days.

      @MrGreenAKAguci00 5 років тому +13

Yeah and he also esentialy invites you to critique these ideas. He shows what he came up with but if someone else's hypothesis seems better he will consider it. It was nicely visible during the debate he had about political correctness where he started with his take on that but after Stephen Fry spoke Peterson aligned himself with Fry because it looked like his take was just more fitting. I have huge admiration for him because of that. That's leadership, he shows that his approach is one of the correct ones by actively living it out and proving that it works, even though mistakes happen on the way. Best kind of motivation if you ask me.

Yeah he really does this. I saw him live in Manchester and during the q and a he just entered a deep thought state and was talking his thoughts out loud. It was so inspired. A magical moment where you realised you were in the presence of a great thinker. Dave Rubin closed the computer, the audience went completely silent - you could hear a pin drop. He started empathising with the theoretical person he was talking about and you could hear the pain in his voice and you could see people in the audience in awe and start crying. And then he finished and there was nothing more to say and he got a massive applause at the end and Dave ended the q and a because you couldn't really follow that.

I love listening to Jordan Peterson because he tells you things that you already know but he articulates it in such a way that he make it profound. I hear the 'voices' all the time. I know that there is the argumentative 'voice' which I came to understand, wants to make me unhappy and destroy me and there is the quiet, one word (usually), 'voice' which wants to protect me and keep me happy. I don't always listen to the quiet voice but the consequences are, without exception, always bad. I'm still learning and growing and alive. Without the full truth no problem can be completely solved. Thanks Jordan.

If a person is made of more sturdy stuff then what they will do is work backwards to a truth but will realize very quickly they must change whatever they have built up in themselves on that first falsehood.

"There are no great men of God; only weak, pitiful men at the hands of a great and merciful God."
What we're seeing with JP is a manifestation of God's wisdom through a chosen vessel. When the world seems like it will tip over in one direction from an overwhelming amount of destructive stupidity and immorality, God declares, "Not so fast," because ultimately, the master will require an account of the stewards left in charge. JP is an indictment against the wisdom of this generation.
"He frustrates the devices of the crafty, So that their hands cannot carry out their plans. He catches the wise in their own craftiness, And the counsel of the cunning comes quickly upon them. They meet with darkness in the daytime, And grope at noontime as in the night. But He saves the needy from the sword, From the mouth of the mighty, And from their hand. So the poor have hope, And injustice shuts her mouth."

I am very old. Many times and in many ways, truth has burned me clean and forced me to become new. My life now, my condition, is wonderful beyond anything I imagined could be -- everything is Light.

In my opinion, Jordan Peterson should be called Dr. Jordan Peterson. I'm in awe with his intellect and how brilliantly he teaches. Dr. Jordan, I have learned so, so much from you. Thank you. Curt. Oshkosh, WI.

"The proper route forward for the redemption of the individual and for mankind as a whole, is as a consequence for the redemption of each individual. That occurs as a consequence of adherence to the truth and courage in the face of being".
That is pretty much all you need to know to start being a better person

    infected,weak.
Get rid of the illness, and it will not hurt you anymore.

I've long stated for people to be careful what they proclaim in a loud voice to the universe. It will unfailingly find a way to bring that very opportunity to ones' life so they can prove their proclamations.

Jordan Peterson makes my brain hurt... and I love it. i absolutely love it! He forces me to think about things - regular, everyday things in my life - in new ways, and and he tears them apart. He's absolutely dead-on correct in his thoughts about truth. His comment here very much harkens a clip I saw of him last year where he was talking about the death of Jesus Christ and how the Cross is much more than about Jesus' resurrection. Imagine if you could take a long-standing "un-truth" in your personal belief system - it could be anything that you finally come to know in your heart is wrong (maybe it's alcoholism, or addiction to pornography, or being abrasive to others... the list is endless, really) - and figuratively place that untruth onto the Cross. Just like Jesus' resurrection 3 days later, once you've gone through the suffering of releasing that untruth you become resurrected yourself. In essence, you bring that untruth to the Cross to let it die - permanently - so that the rest of you can move forward beyond that point and live a fuller, healthier life. And the best of us would then seek out another "untruth" in ourselves and bring it to the Cross for a similar cleansing of the soul. And so on, and so on.
This point hit my like a ton of bricks, just like this current UA-cam clip does. I have been a person of faith since I can remember, I'm even an elder in my church, but I had never seen religion peeled back in such understandable, relatable terms. Peterson is an absolutely jewel in our world today, a humble voice that keeps on giving. I'm 62 and I am made a better person simply by listening to him and inculcating his teachings into my daily living.

Democracy is not derived from ancient greek word Daemon (Δαίμων) but from Demos (Δήμος - people), literally "rule of the people"

grogdizzy and Daemon didn’t use to mean demon as in “evil spirit”, it used to mean just “spirit” back in the day... So I’m not sure what Jordan was aiming at there hah

You are all correct, here - your etymology of democracy in demos is correct. But I think what has happened is that Peterson interrupted his flow of thought with the flow of an internal discourse about Socrates negative view of democracy, where he is critiquing/understnanding it on the basis of his own view of the/his 'daemon' - not surprising, given Socrates' idealised Greek view of truth - and the reason 'not to trust or submit to democracy'. It seems a good point that a bad view of the human spirit and a good view of the human spirit are relevant to the virtue of democracy and that the co-existence of both is not a preclusion to pursuing democracy but a guide to achieving the quality of democracy?

Yea, that was unfortunate that he said that, but it ended being an interesting way to think about Democracy

    • @belisaurusgaming6192

I know I am very late, but 'demos' and 'daimon' come from the same rootword, and the ideal for democracy was 'eu-daimonia' - social peace. Hence his remark about relation between individual moral 'spirit' and democracy.
Also, this quote from Plato: "In democracy, demons change from the individual daimonion of Socrates to guardians of the state."
