    Yet another requested video! Take a look at, what I think, is one of the most badass snakes ever.
    Also, I accidentially kept on calling Barnaby him/his/he, even though she is a female. Sorry Barnaby, and sorry guys for the confusion!

    I did my research before bringing a snake home and picked the Kingsnake because they are active and aggressive eaters and I'm so glad I did. I also like the fact that they grow to a good size, but not so big as to be unmanageable. I picked a black and white banded Kingsnake, named him Nessie and we've been inseparable ever since. Every day while I'm working at my desk he's out exploring, sometimes getting into trouble or hanging out in my lap while I type. He's curious too and does the unexpected, one day he decided he wanted to climb to the top of my 5 drawer filing cabinet from the floor and I watched as he made his way handle to handle till he'd reached the top and then lowered himself off the top and down my arm. Absolutely the best pet snake decision I could have made. Right now I'm getting ready to upgrade him to a 30 gal long tank which I think will be fine for his permanent home. He was the tiniest of babies when I adopted him so he's gone from a tiny plastic tank, to a 10 gal, to a 20 long tank and now the final move. He is my first snake and has been an endless delight ever since.

    Another substrate suggestion and that is Carefresh paper litter. It's generally used for rodents, but I've found that it's great for snakes. I happened to have a bag left over when I first brought my King Snake and thought I'd try it and since it was a natural brown color it didn't look bad at all. I'm now sold on it as it's inexpensive, great to burrow in, easy to spot clean, flushable and safe. Most people don't think of it for reptiles, but my Nessie loves it. Another great thing, once he's created a tunnel it will stay a tunnel that he can use over and over.

  • @lricci007
    @lricci007 6 років тому +1

    One other thing that I think is important. A pet snake, when given the opportunity to explore and entertain themselves, is a much happier snake. It is considered normal by many to keep them in drawers to look at and people I've talked to ask me all the time... "Well what do you do with him"? My response is to tell them what "he" does which often they don't believe until they see for themselves. My point is if you take the time to really watch your pet and get to know them, whatever species they are you will be making them a happy "home" not just keeping a beautiful creature in a box and in turn they give back so much.

    • @umbrareptiles270

      Agreed but aren’t drawer systems mostly used for breeding?

    • @lricci007
      @lricci007 6 років тому

      Umbra Reptiles They should be, but from what I see and people I know alot of people keep them this way and never really experience how wonderful they are as pets when encouraged to explore and enjoy some freedoms. Even the breeder I adopted my Nessie from was amazed when I showed him pics of him climbing my 5 drawer file to the top.

    • @JossersJungle
      @JossersJungle  7 років тому +2

      Victoria Binder Hi! You will always need to have a heating source in the terrarium. In my experience there is no difference between the heating mat and the heating light, so it's up to you which one you prefer. I don't know if chinchillas will cause any problems, I do know that when we bring rats into the reptile room and the snakes can smell them, they do go into this feeding mode and become more aggressive, because they can smell food. I don't know if it's the same with chinchillas. Good luck! :-)

    • @ammaarah7262
      @ammaarah7262 6 років тому +1

      Trapped Inside what my friend does because her mother is against the idea of keeping mice in the the freezer, is when her snake is more active and looking around her terrarium this shows that she is hungry. My friend will then that day go out to buy a frozen rat from our local reptile shop, thaw it and feed it that day. Because snakes need weekly feeding this is doable. So every week she will buy a frozen rat, thaw it, feed it and then repeat in the next 7-10 days or when the snake appears to be looking for food. Hope this helps and do speak to some reptile owners because everyone's different :)

      Jodi D Hi! I don't own a burmese, unfortuantely they are illegal to have in the country I live in :-) but a good rule of thumb is for the rodent to be no bigger than the biggest part of the snake. Hope it helps a little!

    Are California King snakes illegal to own in GA?

      Psychotic Kitsune I don't think so, but check your local Game and Fish laws on keeping animals.

      No but corn snakes are...you can own a rattlesnake in GA but not a corn snake? Crazy laws.

      Hi Jan! Thank you so much, I'm really glad you like them! You know, my parents wouldn't allow me a snake as well, so I didn't get my first until I moved out of the house. I did however make a video specificly for parents to watch. It's called "WHY I SHOULD GET A BALL PYTHON". I know it has helped others convince their parents, maybe it can help you as well? :-)

      I'm trying to answer as many as possible :-) I did a video called "Afraid of snakes?" you could start by having her watch that :-)

    You know....in Finland, giving a alive (example) mouse to snake is against the law. So you need to hope your snake is going to eat frozen food.

    your king is female ya? male king act like a bit*h on breeding season, some snake only eat the small size ( fuzzy or pinkie size ) and the other refuse to eat at all. anyway i finally found an very interesting animal keeper channel without a lot of gimmick and click bait, hope you get a lot of subs ahead.
